Played the shit out of " Africa Brass " as a Senior in High School while the other kids were listening to Travellin' Man / Runaround Sue and Big Bad John .............What a bunch of squares !!
Exactly why the stereotypes of snobbery and elitism exist around jazz. Imagine how foolish you'd think someone who said the inverse. Don't be as silly as those squares. Obviously they get something out of it. Because it's actually there. And it's not an either/or: There's really no need to choose between 5 star French Cuisine or Mass-produced ice cream: there's room for both. Otherwise you're missing out on dinner or desert.
Check out Billy Harpers version of this song, Africa Revisited from album Blueprints of Jazz Vol 2 includes recital of poems by Amiri Baraka, containing the history of Jazz and Black music in America.
This is my favorite version of the track Africa from The Complete Africa/Brass sessions. There are three in total, but this one has Eric Dolphy on flute, bass clarinet and alto sax. Dolphy was involved on the other versions but he didn't play. This version also Booker Little and Art Taylor, replacing Freddie Hubbard and Paul Chambers respectively. Listening to all the versions is a fun exercise, but this one comes out on top. The bass is more pronounced here and I prefer Booker Little's trumpet here, though Hubbard is of course great as well. The orchestration here feels more raw and thicker on this alt version than on the album version.
In this piece, McCoy Tyner used a flat 6 in conjunction with a major 3rd, which created a special sound, along with his usual 4ths, 11ths and other favorite chords.

I falled in love with this great men! His Music is really a medicine for my illness soul...
A masterpiece composition-- one of Coltrane's best in my opinion.
John Coltrane and Elvin Jones together again..What an exellent session!
Another John Coltrane master piece....I love that Deep groove from Elvin Jones.
Amen , so do I--especially the bass intro.
Coltrane is my favorite musician of all time but listen it McCoy Tyner! By far my favorite pianist.
Omg. Those drums. People thought John Bonham of Zep was a brilliant drummer & he was, but they should listen to Elvin. Just unbelievable🤯
Those 4 Guys Are Absolutely incredible Jones on the Drums Bad Boy !!

Me too Roberta. Me, you and and a bunch of people.
the one that make me stay into..
good alternate take.
5:52 Wohh
I can see why this was the alternate take. The album cut sounds a lot brighter with a more driving beat than this tune.
I need the melody sheet for this great song ! please heeelp!
Way Way Out....Yes I
cool
Hip Hop brought me here
+KritiQue how is that just asking
I knew the existence of some of these jazz greats through Hip Hop producers sampling their music basically
John Coltrane,Fela Kuti etc
Heh now you can forget about all that, no need to go back, welcome to endless realms of jazz
Anybody know where i can find sheet music for the bass line and melody?
Debe haber una razón oculta en la maquina del universo que juntó a John Coltrane y a Miles Davis
POWERHOUSE !!!
