This is bad ass in 2023 and will be in a hundred years. Finest melting of jazz and Afro Cuban music. The tenor player was smoking, the percussion clean and popping.
Omg!!! This is powerful.
Mongo Santa Maria, Tito Puentes, and the band is all that! I love Afroblue.
I have a question. Your channel is called afroblue in honor to this piece?
Greetings from Colombia and live Mongo🎉
If you are watching this and you know Mongo Santamaria, you know what true art/music is.
That intensity on the sax is incredible! Catches the struggle of my afro blue!
yes indeed!!
When you know, you know. The rhythm is within and he sure knew how to bring it outta ya
CORRECT...1000%
I like Morrissey and this feller too.
Yeah, Bob Quaranta on piano! Yeah, Bobby Sanabria on drums! Awesome performance
Thanks Dave!
"Afro Blue" is a jazz standard composed by Mongo Santamaría. Mongo Santamaria recorded his composition "Afro Blue" in 1959 when playing with the Cal Tjader Sextet. The first recorded performance was on April 20, 1959, at the Sunset Auditorium in Carmel, California, with Santamaría on percussion.
"Mongo Santamaria" (April 7, 1917 - February 1, 2003) was a Cuban percussionist and bandleader who spent most of his career in the United States. Primarily a conga drummer, Santamaría was a leading figure in the pachanga and boogaloo dance crazes of the 1960s. His biggest hit was his rendition of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man", which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. Also "Afro Blue." From the 1970s, he recorded mainly salsa and Latin jazz, before retiring in the late 1990s. He passed away in Miami due to a heart attack at the age of 86.
Cal Tjader!
I WAS LUCKY TO CATCH MONGO AT THE VILLAGE GATE HE WAS GREAT.
Thanks to my dad I grew up listening to this music, and we were fortunate to see Mongo and Tito Puente perform at the Blue Note back in the 80’s - great show !
me too Mongo in Maimi 1984 and Tito Jax 1990 no comparison to these top-shelf musicians
So awesome!
Sounds amazin to hav seen live 😊
That tenor solo just EXPLOTES MY MIND!!!
Yes, world class!
It’s like where did the sax guy from?
just introduced my tabla-playing granddaughter to this music of my youth
Always will remain the best version of this fabulous composition, Had the great pleasure of seeing Mongo way back when at the famous Birdland...Along with Herbie Mann featuring the great Willy Bobo on timbales. NO matter how many covers of Afro, this will not be dethroned!!
This should be the anthem for the planet.
From Mongo to John Coltrane and back to Mongo.
This is on of the best versions of Afro Blue
Actually it is from John Coltrane to Mongo.
Just like "Watermelon Man" from Herbie Hancock to Mongo.
You may call it you favorite as there are many nice versions.

You still have Cal Tjader, McCoy Tyner All Stars, though McCoy was part of Coltrane's group, Emily Remler,,,,,,,,
Nope, it is a Mongo Santamaria composition.
@@stanleydubroca2626 Thanks, I stand corrected. All of this time, it thought it was a Coltrane composition due to its strong Jazz influence.
I was watching the Colbert Show with Jon Batiste playing Afro Blue a couple of days ago, giving credit to Mongo for the composition, and it kind of through me off, believing Coltrane wrote it.
My thinking (opinion) was reinforced due to how Herbie Hancock was talking about Mongo, when he played "Watermelon" man to Mongo.
Take a look (listen).

By the way, I got interested in Mongo, a long time ago when I read that Chick Corea's first professional gig was with Mongo and wanted to hear his early works.
Later....
Man, mongo is the composer, please read about it

Mongo one of the true diamonds of Latin music. Or just music period.
Música afrocubana, no hay tal cosa como la "música latina", basta de expropiaciones y etiquetas comerciales denigrantes.
Finally, at thirty-five years of age, I can say I’ve seen a shekere solo.
Incredibly
& what a shekeera solo too 😊
the sax guy.... he's the man
in the presence of greatness
I remember this stufff!!! They called it MUSIC!!!!!!
Ive been performing this song for over twenty years. There is nothing that feels better. All time classic.
It was only recently that I learned that there was a man named Mongo Santa Maria. I just thought it was a great line in the movie 'Blazing Saddles.' Now I know the man was an amazing player and Mel Brooks threw that line in there as a tribute to him. Amazing!
Mongo, was one of the most powerful players,EVER!
Forget about it
I grew up more so ..... Eventually learning of this brilliance .......
Mr. Santamaria some of his tracks were on Playstation 2 version game Scarface as well as various Latino early artists .........
His style of brilliance!??! You'll never hear this level of excellence Ever Infinity !!!!! ✌🏿❤️
Tony Rice sent me here, believe it or not. This was one of Tony's inspirations for his album "Manzanita".
I absolutely LOOOOOOOVE JAZZ MUSIC!!! It reaches deep in the soul!We MUST continue to support our jazz artists by (attending their concerts, listening to jazz radio station's), make donations to keep jazz playing on the radio station's, and TV, buy their music, sing, and play their music !!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ . . .
Beautiful. Awesome. Soulful. Genius. Timeless. Cosmic.
Really exciting to watch and listen to Mongo Santamaria's s original.. Thanks for posting this.
Love Coltrane's and Glasper / Badu's version too, but this one is VERY intense! Wow!
Man, this is SO GOOD! I remember seeing Mongo Santamaria open for Hugh Masekela at several of his concerts. Five dollars for music like this!!!
you know how much jealous i feel, right? you simply know it and you do it on purpose :))) Happy new year
Lucky you! Si solo oyeras las grabaciones de Mongo con la Fania ... solo oirias musica del Caribe por el resto de tu vida.
I LOVE MONGO SANTAMARIA!! HE WILL ALWAYS BE ONE OF MY FAVORITE ARTISTS/CONGUEROS. R.I.P. MIGHTY MONGO!

Mongo Santamaría was a Cuban American jazz percussionist. Ramón "Mongo" Santamaría Rodríguez was born in Havana, Cuba, in a family that valued music and their African heritage.
Mongo means the chief of the tribe. Santamaria grew up in Havana, Cuba.
Santamaría released solo albums, many of which featured Cuban percussion and chanting derived from West African sounds and rhythms. His 1959 composition, “Afro-Blue,” is a jazz standard, recorded by John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie, among many others. 1:11
His 1963 hit rendition of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.

what a piece of peace
I agree
i had the honor of playing with the late master saxophonist sam furnace, here playing baritone saxophone with mr. santamaria. sam was a great artist and gave me confidence and inspiration when i started to play in new york with the late mr. fred ho's ensembles and orchestra. a deep musician and human being. also, my friend bobby sanabria, a great drummer and percussionist, is here on drum set in the ensembl;e. r. i. p., sam and fred, deep and powerful, always, in spirit and music!!!
Beautiful.. Mongo.. Beautiful
Today, such a player would usually be sitting there with the fanciest, matching, exotic wood, top-of-the-line conga set. It's nice to see Mongo leading the band on some raggedy congas with which he's clearly spent long intimate years, and his main drum has an old rim on all sideways.
they were all poor people back then and they would still be poor today because REAL music NEVER gets mainstream success!
Them raggedy congas were made by Gonzalo Vergara and are worth more than any conga in the market 😊
Thanks to my granddad I grew up learning and loving this as well as many other cultural music ( this is apart of my culture too❤️🙏🏽) 🎼 🎶🎵❤❤❤❤😊.. Wonderful memories love you granddaddy🥲🌹❤️🥰🎶🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
The tenor sax solo tho..holy sh*t
Yow! For real!
yes. among the many things he was doing musically, tecnically he also was doing circular breathing, which I've only seen Rasaan Roland Kirk do (on 2 saxophones simultaneously).
Hey theres Toni, ( now Siraj) on the sax. His puffy cheeks. Lol, love him.
Absolutely wonderful! Que ritmo tan fantastico, se me eriza la piel!
Thanks "fortyjazz" for uploading this Vintage Classic Video..
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MONGO SANTAMARIA..!

Amazing sax player
Modern jazz in its purest form. I love it.

TODOS MAESTROS,PERO QUE RITMO TAN DIFICIL DE INTERPRETAR POR DIOS,GRACIAS FORTYJAZZ,QUE MELODIA,QUE MUSICA,YO CREO QUE NUNCA LA OLVIDARE,DESDE MI BOGOTA,OBSERVANDO ESTE ESPECTACULO INOLVIDABLE,INCREIBLE,ES LO MEJOR DEL MUNDO
Tenor solo and shekere solo: both master-level.
Wow! Beautiful music masterfully arranged! What a great fusion of sound! Mongo is the truth IMO. Look at how happy he looks midway through, like his plan came together just right! Agree w/ Salsasabroso74, you feel this running through your veins.... Thanks for sharing, forty jazz!
among the many great things the tenor sax player (tony hinson) was doing musically, technically he also was doing circular breathing, which I've only seen Rasaan Roland Kirk do (on 2 saxophones simultaneously).
He is still playing but he changed his name several years ago to Siraj.
I used to go see this same band at the Village Gate in NYC on Monday nights right around this time. I didn't know if I was sitting down or standing up, it was that intense to hear live.

I'll never forget Mel Brooks in Blazing Saddles when he looked down the road and saw the character Mongo coming to town, he ran, the townspeople rand and he exclaimed, "Mongo's coming. Mongo's coming. Mongo, Santa Maria." LOL
Hah
Mel Brooks got his start as a drummer, so yes he would have an appreciation for other percussionists...
