Mongo Santamaría (1917-2003) was a Cuban American jazz percussionist. Ramón "Mongo" Santamaría Rodríguez was born in Havana, Cuba, in a family that valued music and their African heritage. Mongo means the chief of the tribe. Santamaria grew up in Havana, Cuba. 30:03 Santamaría released solo albums, many of which featured Cuban percussion and chanting derived from West African sounds and rhythms. His 1959 composition, “Afro-Blue,” is a jazz standard, recorded by John Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie, among many others. His 1963 hit rendition of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. Sources: BlackPast; Jazz Music Archives; Nmaahc
Mongo is simply a nickname for Ramon in Spanish, equivalent to Ray for Raymond in English. If it means chief of the tribe in an African language, it's a pure coincidence
Johnny Almendra= Timbalès & drums, Mitch frohman=Ténor Sax & flûte, Mongo=Tumbadoras, Bobby Porcelli=Alto sax & flûte, Chris Rogers=Piano, Eddie Rodriguez=Bongo
@@rrengifo At that time Mr. Frohman was only mentioning the musicians that were featured soloists on the previous tune. The band was introduced at another time that is not shown in this video.
Great performance I was not witness to...but the sad fact is that audio guys did not capture a better balance of the overall band...especially when the solo trading between congas & Bongos ( bongo faded out of mix ) And drum set was very much like a background sound.
"Mongo" Santamaria , one of "The Greatest", I remember my father use to play his records..
Thanking God for Mongo Santamaria's music!
