Such a great song! The "steel horse" reference, although typically a reference to a motorcycle, is in this case referring to their tour bus and/or tour plane. The use of the "cowboy mentality" to describe being on the road. An outlaw touring around with a "loaded six string" on his back, talking about his guitar. The lyric line of "I've seen a million faces, and I rocked them all" is about the shows they played and people they entertained. So this entire song is about being alone on the road, during a LONG tour with no rest for the weary. Catchy tune all around.

He is outlining the similarities of the cowboy life style and rock star life...from traveling all the time, when finally arriving at your location going crazy, partying, getting all the women, drinking all the liquor, etc...it's very well written.

"Six string on my back" refers to the guitar; "steel horse" is the tour bus.
This song uses Old West cowboy imagery to describe the lonely life of a rock star. At the time, starting with their debut album in 1984, Bon Jovi played about 300 shows a year, using the remaining time to work on albums. When it came time to write for their third album, Slippery When Wet, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote this song about what they knew: performing to lots of people who all blended together after a while.

Its because,, albums used to cost 2 hours pay,and they wore out.
8 tracks were 15-20 bucks, and they wore out QUICK.
Television was super thin, and inconsistent,, if you saw something , you likely wouldn't see it twice.
Everyone talked about the Beatles,,but we really didn't see them, for 30 years, till streaming came around.

Because Bon Jovi always had that image of making music for the ladies, a bit ... corny. I think most guitarist are aware of Sambora though. I was so into them when i was younger, Keep the Faith, song and album, were main reasons for me to start playing guitar. Though this here eventually became my favorite song. There are some live versions that i prefer over the studio version.

Yeah overall not a complicated solo but what he makes out of it with the pitch harmonics and FEEL, is something else. Easy too 10 solo for me and I’m not even a huge Bon Jovi fan.

Slippery When Wet was an EPIC album. There wasn’t a weak song on the album! I had it on cassette then also New Jersey. Bon Jovi is in my opinion an under appreciated band

I remember it being a big hit in high school . I forgot all about it and how good of a song it was until 2005 when it was used at the beginning of Deadliest Catch . It was the perfect song for that show.

Ritchie made you feel that western vibe hard with this one. Everytime I listen to this one and Blaze of glory I think about the movie Young Guns with Billy the kid. Badass cowboy.... However, it can be referred to badass bikers too. Now you have to do Runaway.... Their earliest of hits and vintage Bonjovii. 😌🎸🎶🎶🎶🎶

The guitar parts are played on a 12 string Acoustic Rickenbacker guitar. Even though the “steel horse” being the tour bus is a romantic idea, the “Steel Horse” IS a motorcycle.
