I am an American. I spent two weeks in Honduras in Central America and one night I was hanging out with some locals. A young man pulled out an old beat up guitar and strted playing Dream On perfectly. He did not know how to pronounce the English lyrics - so I started singing. A HUGE crowd gathered in a mountain village of Honduras as we - two strangers - connected through this beautiful song. It was sublime.
I’ve heard that his Dad was a pianist and he sat underneath the piano when his Dad played and that’s is where he got most of his inspiration for that song
I never knew that. I even had to look that up because it seemed so young for such a deep song. Come to find out he was actually 14 when he wrote the lyrics! Thanks to your comment, I learned something pretty amazing today! 🤗 I read it on Wiki but got even better details from ruclips.net/video/5OjSY2GS_iA/видео.html. If you don't trust links, search for "Professor of Rock - How Steven Tyler Created a 70s Masterpiece". It includes a really interesting story about how he got the money for the keyboard to perform the song! And @Kenneth, this video talks about that story too!
A question because I don't know. Why does Steve Tyler not sing like THAT anymore? Chooses not to or Can NOT sing like that? If the latter I wonder why? Any insight appreciated
I love Lex's comparison to an alarm clock at the end of the song. I'm not sure if that's what Aerosmith intended, but it makes perfect sense. Music can speak without words and Lex has a great talent picking up on things like that. Glad you both enjoyed this classic.
Right. I’ve heard this song too many times to count and never once made that connection or had that idea and I love it. Like you said. Intended or not. It’s perfect.
I agree, she's quite intuitive and she often quickly recognizes what a producer was trying to do by approaching something this way or that. And as for this example, things like that are generally intentional, and I seem to remember Tyler saying at the time it was released that it was an alarm. Regardless, most other artists I know learned over time that that the difference between so-called good and bad artists isn't how much talent they might have inside them, but how many ways they find to let it out. That creative choice to end the song that way is the kind of next-level layer of meaning that a less experienced band or producer misses as an opportunity. It's what makes the great people so great--they are doing so much more--and it's also why every one of us always has room to grow.
Insightful reaction, guys! A quick little story...Aerosmith played a fund raising concert for my fledgling private elementary school, and my pops was involved in the booking. It was 1974 for the tour of their second album "Get Your Wings." Some of my mates and myself got to go backstage and greet them before the show. They couldn't have been nicer; especially Steven Tyler who gave us high fives and a minute or two of small talk. Then watched them from up front. I was 10 at the time and will never, ever forget it & thought I'd share. Cheers!
Right with you there. I "like" Aerosmith but never really got into them, but this song has great power and meaning - that may be it too - many of their songs are superficial and shallow about sex, drugs and rock n roll and that's all well and good, but there's not much to sink you teeth into. This one just hits different. Also his singing is more subdued and you hear more of his range instead of the constant high, head screams he is famous for. Here, he only uses his scream to accentuate at the end and I think (and Lex certainly agrees!) that makes the switch to the high, power scream much more impactful.
Remembering in '72, driving back home on lonely county roads after two weeks working offshore, smoking a joint and then the radio played this song, and Heart's "Magic Man" and Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs" back to back. Fifty years ago. Fuck. All these lines in my face getting clearer, the past is gone.

@@LoudModeOn i have no idea when it happened but 'Pump' is the first album that I can remember him starting to sing like current day Aerosmith. One day in the car, this song was on a rock n’ roll countdown, and my dad told me who it was. I couldn’t believe it, didn’t even sound like him until his voice screeched. Turns out this band had been making music for 20 years.

I've seen them a couple of times here in Norway. First time during the Get a Grip tour and then just a few years ago when they and Alice Cooper performed on the same outdoor show at Odderøya in Kristiansand. They (and Alice for that matter) were fantastic. Anyone who gets a chance to see them live while that's still possible should not miss that opportunity.
Do more Aerosmith: 1. Toys in the Attic, Sweet Emotion, and Round and Round, from Toys in the Attic (plus Big Ten Inch Record, just for fun) 2. Back in the Saddle and Nobody’s Fault, from Rocks After Rocks, they were a different sort of band.
My first concert 1975 I was 14yrs old I've seen Aerosmith 6 times great band one of those bands that you dont see people covering probably because of Stevens unique voice
3:36 for the young folks learning about how bands used to mix albums for headphones since that was how people mainly listened to music back in the day.
Yes, this is the song Eminem sampled for his song "Sing for the Moment". Joe Perry actually recorded a new guitar solo for that song. Aerosmith also re-recorded "Walk This Way" on a Run DMC collaboration back in the 80's, too.
It took a whilefor the song to become a hit. Steven Tyler wrote it when he was a teenager, before Aerosmith existed. It was released as a single off their first album in 1973, but stalled at 59 on the pop charts. Two years later, their third album ("Toys in the Attic", which had "Walk This Way" and "Sweet Emotion" on it) had taken off commercially. Late that year, the label re-released it and it became their first Top 10 hit almost three years after its first release (and almost a decade after it was written).
Jerry Garcia once called Aerosmith "the druggiest bunch of guys" he had ever met. Jerry Garcia said that. It's amazing that they have enjoyed a lifetime of success, all things considered.
Yes, they really were and at one point two valued members were out because they weren't really functioning. Steven himself was nearly there too. But they got cleaned up and have been with us for the long haul now, and I'm glad.

Yes sir and I also left out Metallica...
Fantastic live performers.
I’ve been listening to this song for like 35 years and never caught the alarm clock at the end to wake up from the dream. Mind blown
This chick is dope
Do more Aerosmith:
1. Toys in the Attic, Sweet Emotion, and Round and Round, from Toys in the Attic (plus Big Ten Inch Record, just for fun)
2. Back in the Saddle and Nobody’s Fault, from Rocks
After Rocks, they were a different sort of band.
My first concert 1975 I was 14yrs old I've seen Aerosmith 6 times great band one of those bands that you dont see people covering probably because of Stevens unique voice
I bought this album in 1976. One of the best albums they've ever written!
One of the few great Aerosmith songs, but one of the great songs of the era. So props.
I've seen them live 3 times, and YES, it is amazing live!
Genre fluid shirt is pure gold.
That "polarity" is called Stereo.
SHINEDOWN simple man ACOUSTIC!!!!!
Such a classic, love their early albums. Steven's voice sounds so much like Freddie Mercury in this song.
Lex, you did it again, that alarm clock connection, I never got it, but you picked it up instantly, amazing.
Yeah, Eminem sampled this in Sing for the Moment. A really cool combination of classic rock and hip-hop.
Your precious face when he hit that high one! I am a Boston lady who was a teenager when they broke out!!! Insane.. you are very insightful!!!
you guys complete each other. One listens to the music, the other the lyrics. Gives the audience a complete rendition of the artistry of each song. Thansk guys
Anybody else watch these reactions and get a little sad that you'll never hear these songs for the first time again? You'll never have those jaw dropping moments like Lex for this song again.
The thing I love about this reaction channel is that Brad represents what I show and Lex represents what I am feeling inside with every song.
