I am an American. I spent two weeks in Honduras in Central America and one night I was hanging out with some locals. A young man pulled out an old beat up guitar and strted playing Dream On perfectly. He did not know how to pronounce the English lyrics - so I started singing. A HUGE crowd gathered in a mountain village of Honduras as we - two strangers - connected through this beautiful song. It was sublime.
I’ve heard that his Dad was a pianist and he sat underneath the piano when his Dad played and that’s is where he got most of his inspiration for that song
I never knew that. I even had to look that up because it seemed so young for such a deep song. Come to find out he was actually 14 when he wrote the lyrics! Thanks to your comment, I learned something pretty amazing today! 🤗 I read it on Wiki but got even better details from ruclips.net/video/5OjSY2GS_iA/видео.html. If you don't trust links, search for "Professor of Rock - How Steven Tyler Created a 70s Masterpiece". It includes a really interesting story about how he got the money for the keyboard to perform the song! And @Kenneth, this video talks about that story too!
A question because I don't know. Why does Steve Tyler not sing like THAT anymore? Chooses not to or Can NOT sing like that? If the latter I wonder why? Any insight appreciated
I love Lex's comparison to an alarm clock at the end of the song. I'm not sure if that's what Aerosmith intended, but it makes perfect sense. Music can speak without words and Lex has a great talent picking up on things like that. Glad you both enjoyed this classic.
Right. I’ve heard this song too many times to count and never once made that connection or had that idea and I love it. Like you said. Intended or not. It’s perfect.
I agree, she's quite intuitive and she often quickly recognizes what a producer was trying to do by approaching something this way or that. And as for this example, things like that are generally intentional, and I seem to remember Tyler saying at the time it was released that it was an alarm. Regardless, most other artists I know learned over time that that the difference between so-called good and bad artists isn't how much talent they might have inside them, but how many ways they find to let it out. That creative choice to end the song that way is the kind of next-level layer of meaning that a less experienced band or producer misses as an opportunity. It's what makes the great people so great--they are doing so much more--and it's also why every one of us always has room to grow.
Insightful reaction, guys! A quick little story...Aerosmith played a fund raising concert for my fledgling private elementary school, and my pops was involved in the booking. It was 1974 for the tour of their second album "Get Your Wings." Some of my mates and myself got to go backstage and greet them before the show. They couldn't have been nicer; especially Steven Tyler who gave us high fives and a minute or two of small talk. Then watched them from up front. I was 10 at the time and will never, ever forget it & thought I'd share. Cheers!
Right with you there. I "like" Aerosmith but never really got into them, but this song has great power and meaning - that may be it too - many of their songs are superficial and shallow about sex, drugs and rock n roll and that's all well and good, but there's not much to sink you teeth into. This one just hits different. Also his singing is more subdued and you hear more of his range instead of the constant high, head screams he is famous for. Here, he only uses his scream to accentuate at the end and I think (and Lex certainly agrees!) that makes the switch to the high, power scream much more impactful.
Remembering in '72, driving back home on lonely county roads after two weeks working offshore, smoking a joint and then the radio played this song, and Heart's "Magic Man" and Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs" back to back. I'm old enough (and lucky enough) to have seen all the great bands live back in the 70's...including seeing Aerosmith perform this song multiple times. Watching the younger folks get to experience this great music for the first time (albeit not live) brings a smile to my face every time...and makes me kind of jealous since I can never hear it for the first time again...LOL. Regarding this song...I always love to see a first time reaction to "the scream"...and Lex did not disappoint at 5:26... :-)
It took a whilefor the song to become a hit. Steven Tyler wrote it when he was a teenager, before Aerosmith existed. It was released as a single off their first album in 1973, but stalled at 59 on the pop charts. Two years later, their third album ("Toys in the Attic", which had "Walk This Way" and "Sweet Emotion" on it) had taken off commercially. Late that year, the label re-released it and it became their first Top 10 hit almost three years after its first release (and almost a decade after it was written).
Do more Aerosmith: 1. Toys in the Attic, Sweet Emotion, and Round and Round, from Toys in the Attic (plus Big Ten Inch Record, just for fun) 2. Back in the Saddle and Nobody’s Fault, from Rocks After Rocks, they were a different sort of band.
I was an intern pulling all-nighters at the Nashville VA Hospital. This song, along with Stairway to Heaven and some others, made the hours pass a little easier.
It's been a banger on the radio since the mid 70s *Edit* I've never felt this song was your typical Aerosmith song. You can tell it's him, but doesn't exactly sound like him.
Janie's Got a Gun would be a great Aerosmith choice. Amazing vocals, harmonies, and instrumentals. Plus, the song and video tells the same story! It's one of their biggests hits, and it's about an intense subject.
It's so sweet how you're carefully and patiently leading him along this musical journey. You're not trying to prove a thing or show him up. Very sweet.
This song was from their first album, and Steven Tyler wasn't completely confident in himself yet,, so he made his voice a little more "masculine" for the these recordings. Joe Perry (lead guitar) said he didn't like that Steven did that, because he had a great voice. Personally, I like the sound.
Yes, this is the song Eminem sampled for his song "Sing for the Moment". Joe Perry actually recorded a new guitar solo for that song. Aerosmith also re-recorded "Walk This Way" on a Run DMC collaboration back in the 80's, too.
One of the best songs of all time. The live performance was awesome! Lex your reaction is priceless! When I saw his show in early 2000's and saw Prince shortly after, 2 best concert I've ever attended! I see you've looked at more of their song's, you should really listen to all their music one of the best bands of all times! Read their autobiography, he also jammed in his teen years with the lead singer of the Rolling Stones. I got the entire bands autograph in the late 90s early 2000s when they did their book tour. Can't remember exact year. Girl this song live was off the chain!
I almost guarantee that Brad's confusion about some of these songs he calls "different" and can't wrap his head around them, will soon enough become some of his favorites.
Aerosmith was my first concert in 4th grade. They killed it. Black crows sucked that night unfortunately though and I'm a big fan. Steven Tyler is a born entertainer
Sorry Brad. Lex is a whole lot more in tune with music than you are. Lex, you are EXTREMELY sharp, you just need more exposure. You have got a great ear, and your take on the end of the song...
You should listen "Janie's Got A Gun", the history behind that song is hard.
I've seen them live 3 times, and YES, it is amazing live!
WOW!!! Alarm Clock!! Been listening to that song since it came out and never thought of that as a alarm that time is out. Thanks Lex
Do more Aerosmith:
1. Toys in the Attic, Sweet Emotion, and Round and Round, from Toys in the Attic (plus Big Ten Inch Record, just for fun)
2. Back in the Saddle and Nobody’s Fault, from Rocks
After Rocks, they were a different sort of band.
Yes. This was one of the most epic songs I have ever witnessed in concert!!!
I was an intern pulling all-nighters at the Nashville VA Hospital. This song, along with Stairway to Heaven and some others, made the hours pass a little easier.
Absolutely love Aerosmith, and this song is a classic
The prefect song to listen to while you're on the highest peak of Mount Olympus
Your precious face when he hit that high one! I am a Boston lady who was a teenager when they broke out!!! Insane.. you are very insightful!!!
If the government decided to clone Lex and released millions of 'Lex's' into the population, the world would prob be a better place.
Best comment ever 😂
This is my favorite go to song. And i`ve seen them preform this one live. It was amazing.
Never was a big Aerosmith fan, but this song was “the $hit!” in the 80’s on the radio....
It's been a banger on the radio since the mid 70s
*Edit* I've never felt this song was your typical Aerosmith song. You can tell it's him, but doesn't exactly sound like him.
This was 70's. Their 80's stuff was popular but i didn't care for it. 70's was their best stuff.
An epic song it has a life n Death feeling. Birth n Death , it so touches my soul.
This is my favorite song of all time. Didn’t even discover it until I was 19 years old, but I will never forget it. Anthem of life
Yes, this is the song Eminem sampled for his song "Sing for the Moment". Joe Perry actually recorded a new guitar solo for that song. Aerosmith also re-recorded "Walk This Way" on a Run DMC collaboration back in the 80's, too.
Love Aerosmith! Saw them 5 times when I was younger in the 80's and 90's
Such a classic, love their early albums. Steven's voice sounds so much like Freddie Mercury in this song.
I love that guitarist, too!!!! Aerosmith is a great group!!!!
Aerosmith was my first concert in 4th grade. They killed it. Black crows sucked that night unfortunately though and I'm a big fan. Steven Tyler is a born entertainer
Maybe aerosmith was so goo you just remember them as being not as good and so bad?
@@tylersimplot13 I wish that was the case lol unfortunately Chris Robinson didn't have his best performance.
This was my favorite song in high school when it came out back in the 1970's. So many memories!
The thing I love about this reaction channel is that Brad represents what I show and Lex represents what I am feeling inside with every song.
I loved this song when I was a kid. I’d get chills every time I herd it.
Sorry Brad. Lex is a whole lot more in tune with music than you are. Lex, you are EXTREMELY sharp, you just need more exposure. You have got a great ear, and your take on the end of the song... "Sounds like an alarm clock, like time is up"... I am blown away. I am 55, this is one of my favorite songs, and I consider myself a connoisseur of rock, and... I NEVER caught that. You are right on. Wow.
LOL... every time I hear "Dream On".... reminds me of my High School Prom... love you kids!!!
I remember being 19 and sitting with this cute blonde girl smoking a joint lol…now 65 thinking back and wondering what the hell happened. Goes by fast…
feels to fast, sometimes.
As the saying goes, "Youth is wasted on the young."
Doesn’t it, though. 66 and wondering the same thing! :)
Great singing and high note. To each their own.
