I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.

Good information on the leaders, Thanks. How about a show about the knots used to join the braid and leaders. I started using the Lefty Kreh knot about 2 years ago and like it alot. Would appreciate the info. Good luck at the up coming tournamet!!!

  • @williamfaragher3671

Solid info ! We all have experienced how braid will transmit rattling lure noise up the line to the rod. The noise from the friction of braid at the rod tip is sent down the line. Braid is less stealthy in highly pressured waters.

Tips like this are why I continue to watch, like, and subscribe Matt. Thanks. ✌️

  • @jonbullard7074

Great video Matt! This is why this is my favorite channel.

  • @Nobodyimportant696

Good stuff Matt. you pretty much acknowledged to me what I knew but have never discussed with anyone. I get that a lot from you and appreciate it. thanks

  • @douglasspickler4925

My thoughts exactly. Thanks for sharing your great tips and information.

FF sonar has showed me that by using a larger diameter braid and smaller diameter fluoro leader, I can quickly get baits to fall into the strike zone and then when the larger braid line hits the water, the fall rate slows and stays in the strike zone longer. You can adjust the leader length to what depth and weight lure you are using.

Great vid Matt. Being winter here in Aus, I'm using a stronger leader. Fishing blades off the bottom means snags, and I want as much opportunity to get my lures back without a break. I run just a rod length of leader as I fish shallow lakes. The last 2 weeks I've been using a polycarbonate leader instead of fluoro and I actually really dig it. I seem to be able to make stronger, thinner leader knots with it and all round a really good experience with it.

Hey Matt, I have used a very heavy braided leader if fishing for big pike. 80-pound test braid to Floro carbon main line. No kinks anymore. Use a color braid like red or a chartreuse,I think it brings them in. About a 3 foot leader. I know it goes against all thinking, but for me, it works

  • @tagg946

i agree with this 100%. i basically use 8lb braid on all of my spinning and bfs settups, ive used 10 but it kind of overpowers my bfs reels. then anywhere from a 6-10, sometimes to a 12lb fluoro leader. havent had any issues with the braid breaking. kastking's super power braid and powerpro are tough as nails around wood and rock, and they probably break at a higher lb test than advertised. its really fun pitching a micro texas rig around on 8lb braid to a 10lb leader in heavy cover.

  • @johnowens7435

    Thanks Matt, another great video!

Something I recently discovered about fluorocarbon leader material is that expensive coextruded types designed to improve knot strength will break below their rated tensile strength when tied to braid. Buy something basic and cheaper for better performance. Also, low carrier braid will saw through fluoro and greatly weaken a uni to uni knot. I use a high carrier softer braid but only as an extension (about 20” section) between my main line 4-carrier and leader. This is because I struggle with line management and wind knots when casting higher carrier braid. Yes, this means at least three knots in every rigging but I find it works well with less breakage and hassles. While I’m at it, one more suggestion, use only four twists on each side of a uni to uni. More than that can weaken the fluoro when pulling the knot tight, even when lubricated. When tying heavy leaders, three turns are sufficient on the fluoro side.

For years I have matched my line diameters and found knots are smaller and tie better.

  • @macprince5667

    Thanks for the information, Matt.

  • @johnwhite993

    Thanks for the info Matt

  • @grandpa5206

Very good information on leader line thanks

  • @ro-cl2do

    Great info, Thanks

  • @acon2834

Refreshing to hear this. I got a chunk today on 20lb fluoro/15 lb braid, because thats the only reel I had in my kayak!😀

  • @victory10111hook

Just bought a few of your swim jigs. I love em! Can you do more videos breaking down the trailers to use and fish catching. I know you have one up already. Thansk
