    Thanks for sharing this Thom. My wife fell in love with the Family Lines paint scheme way back and picked up a Kato unit maybe 25 years ago. Still runs great.

      You are welcome, Jack. I always liked it myself and also like the Seaboard System scheme. I didn’t know it was a ‘dummy’ unit until I saw that the air intakes on the back had been covered over and painted.
      Are there any Kato’s that don’t run great?😁 Enjoy the rest of your week.

    Hello Thom, an interesting trip to the Ravenna Railroad Festival 2023. A well-preserved saddle-boiler steam locomotive and a short ride. The steam locomotives awaiting restoration were magnificent. Thank you for taking us with you. Best regards Wolfgang

      Jawtooth has at least a couple of videos of it in action. They had it set up so people couldn’t get near the tracks while it was moving.

    Hi Thom. My mom may she rest in peace was from Irvine fright next door to Ravenna.
    My grandparents who were very well known, liked and respected in the community were in the store business for over 40 years before retiring.
    I would always go see my grandparents in the summer for at least a week and I’m old enough to remember when the EK subdivision was booming with traffic.
    Sadly the EK sub has been defunct for a long time.
    CSX uses the few remaining yard tracks for storage but yeah the coal traffic is gone.
    I’m very happy that CSX and Kentucky Steam Heritage worked out a deal to have the Kentucky Steam Heritage facility and it’s been reconnected to the North American rail network after years of being idle and abandoned.
    Thank you for sharing this with us!

      Good morning Johnathan. Thank you for the personal connection. I saw on Facebook last night where a CSX train pulled into the yard after we left to store some boxcars. They were glad to see the train!
      I gave a presentation on the logging railroads of the Red River Gorge many years ago in Estill County. Not much going on there these days, lots of empty stores.
      Have a great week and stay safe!

      @@thomplacier677 - yeah once the Walmart in Richmond was built and the road to Richmond was improved that killed both Irvine and Ravenna economically.
      My grandparents got out of the store business in 1980 and I remember in just a couple years after that downtown Irvine was hurting bad
      Ravenna wasn’t any better off.
      Have a great day!

    Wasn’t intending to comment, but thought I’d mention that I’ve opted on a model railroad in a town just east of Santa Barbara, CA. It’s supposed to be the EK division of the L&N. Some names were just names to me, but interesting they were mentioned in that page about the CSX and Ravenna history you were showing. Ravenna isn’t modeled nor part of anything on the layout though.
    Looked like a fun time.

    • @thomplacier677
      @thomplacier677  Год назад +1

      Good morning Ken. Fantastic scenery opportunities but unless you go back in time quite a bit 98% of the traffic would be coal. Not enough diversity for me. There wouldn’t even be the bridge traffic like the Clinchfield had. Then again, I can’t complain about a long coal train snaking through mountainous scenery!
      Thanks for watching. Stay safe!

    • @KenN.OXN.805
      @KenN.OXN.805 Год назад

      @@thomplacier677 not sure you call it “bridge traffic” but besides coal traffic, the EK division layout has a solid reefer train from Florida and Georgia to Chicago and Great Lakes, auto parts trains, three mixed merchandise trains. The mixed trains are staged to drop off some cars at yards called Dent or Hazard. There are several mixed merchandise trains out of an offsite (staging) called Corbin via the C&O. Locals and turns out of Dent and Fowler (or something like that) give crews industry switching.
      For 15 operators who see the layout only once monthly, it provides enough variety.

    • @thomplacier677
      @thomplacier677  Год назад +1

      @@KenN.OXN.805 good morning. He has done a lot of creative engineering to create traffic for his railroad but there’s nothing wrong with that. I’m sure it’s fun to run. Tony Koesters and Allan McClellands layouts were similar but they used fictional names. I would love to see those L&N trains running through eastern KY!
      Hazard was further down the line from Ravenna and on a separate line than Corbin. Corbin is a junction along the mainline and is in the mainline from Cincinnati to Atlanta. Not as much traffic now that there isn’t much coal but it was the line that was in my backyard when I lived in Cynthiana in the late 80’s. And it goes through Paris where I shot a few trains from the depot restaurant there.
      Thanks for the information. I hope to see his layout on RUclips or in a magazine someday. Stay safe!

      @@thomplacier677 actually, the layout has been written up a few times in the past. You might try a search for “gary siegel ho scale l&n ek division” or variations of that.

    Located in the heart of coal hopefully they can continue their mission is that is not necessarily where the average tourist is going to go to. Somewhat mind-boggling that the little train makes a circle on what were active Mainline yard tracks. While the rail world scene there will never make a comeback to 1915 levels at least it will have its historical connection

    • @thomplacier677
      @thomplacier677  Год назад

      Yes, that’s going to be the struggle point for them. Location, location, location. I just can’t help thinking how much better it would be if they could get the old TTI with the roundhouse and turntable in Paris. That’s within 80 miles of Lexington, Cincinnati, and Louisville, not far off of the Interstate and in horse country. Like you, I hope they succeed and they are off to a good start.
      Have a great week, Paul. Stay safe!
