- This is just a quick video showing you how to program Kentucky State Police into a Radio Shack Pro-197 Digital Trunking Scanner. KSP use a digital P25 system however it is not a trunking system therefore you must program it as a conventional object. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll try to help if I can. This guy does a good job I just the whistler looks just like this one ,i had to play it a few times it does look easy but you can all ways go back as needed
Thanks! Our 197 just dumped all it's frequencies. I think one of the grandchildren might be the the culprit but he is only 18 months old so the interrogation was fruitless. With your directions I got it reprogrammed. My wife looks at me with renewed respect. I got her about half convinced she didn't marry a complete idiot now. 73s!

Unfortunately tho I would have to recommend against any follow up interrogations with the 18 month old. The last time I tried that the subject maintained eye contact with we, held a stone cold poker face and pooped his pants as if nothing had happened.
Thanks for doing this video. Turned very complicated into simple. Since I do not own a PC (Mac guy) the computer was not an option. Still need to figure outwhat the Nac number is for our local PD but will try leaving it blank. Appreciate your efforts. Gary, NH

This is the best tutorial I have seen so far. What part of KY you in. I just moved to Princeton from Colorado and have the Pro 197. I just the programming cable from RS and software to program frequencies when I lived in CO. How do I delete those and program in the frequencies for Caldwell and Hopkins County? Is there a way we can communicate via email?

hi , i have a radio shack pro 197 that shows it is scanning but i never hear nothing but one channel, so is there a way to trouble shoot to see if i may have lock it out some how.
How do you no if your local pd is using p25 and how do you find out the nec?

Just google your city’s police freqs. There’s several great web sites, such as radio reference, which list all the freqs, what kind of system they run, nacs, and a mess of other pertinent info.
Will programming the scanner as shown allow the user to automatically follow a conversation if the broadcaster switches to a different channel or frequency?

Hi Bryce, I just got this new in box scanner for $60. She opened the box and determined it was too complex so she put it on the shelf.
I’m gathering the frequencies in Michigan to add.
Does this scanner pick up military and aircraft frequencies?
Also, is it better to add frequencies off a computer or just plug them in?

I took a 102" steel cb whip that was damaged on the end, cut it down to 36", installed it outside on a mount, used adapters to attach rg6 coax to it and run it inside to a ws1065 scanner. I pick up p25 and fm broadcasts. But could I do better?, all stations I have installed are local and static free and real clear. I want a good setup without spending a lot as I am on a fixed income. thanks and great video.
It really just comes down to which compromise you decide to go with. I’ve had the best all around coverage with discone antennas since the scanner is so wide banded. If you’re really wanting to pickup distant 900MHz-1.2GHz tho you’d be better off with a dedicated antenna. Just keep in mind if you did that you’d loose a lot on the lower bands. It sounds like your doing pretty good with what you got tho so I think I’d just continue running that and maybe keep your eyes open for a good deal on a new or used discone. I had to loctite mine to keep it from loosening up but it’s been going strong for years now, so if you do decide to buy a new one I’d read reviews first since some are pretty flimsy. But no matter what antenna, always use 75ohm coax, not excessive in length, only use quality adapters where you have to, and weatherproof any exposed adapters/connections. It depends on what type of digital system they upgraded to. This scanner will pickup p25 systems but if they went to Nexedge forget about it.

the programming cable is the best way ...for the 39.95 it all good ....you can program the pro197 in about 20 mins...

how do you make the different color lights flash on the pro-197? I programmed my pro-197,but I don't know how to make the different colors lights flash on certain channels or freq's..
Dwight Howard when you're in the programming menu you can adjust all of that. I cover it in the video around 4 minutes in. If you already have the freq programmed just goto edit then scroll down to the led / color settings.
thanks brycejcox! I use to know how to do it,but forgot. see the lights really still flash on my 197,but I also have the pro-106 and I had to re-programmed my 106 again, but I have forgotten how to make the lights flash on certain channells or freq's
Dwight Howard just follow what I did in the video and you'll get it. If you already have it programmed and just want it to flash click the program button then click on edit then select which ever freq you're wanting to edit and go down towards the bottom of the programming menus and set the led to flash and then pick which color you want.
ok brycejcox, I have the freq's programmed in the scanner,but when I went to the program mode and hit edit, dupe,curr,and find came up instead.
well I got it to work on one freq,but I got to try and remember what I did,and I guess go ahead and watch your video. thank man!!!
How do you know if it's a trunking system. I am brand new at this but I do have the whistler 1065. The other question is how do I know if a frequency is digital or analog? Thanks. BTW, Great video

Hi Bryce I watched the video and i put the frequency in and still get nothing but static, I have a hand held scanner and when it’s talking the digital scanner comes on with just static signal. Is there a way to fix this thanks

I tried using the programing cord for some reason I am not getting the fire departments to dispatch or fire department to each other. I do get dispatch when they call out the fire depts.

Willie Jackson make sure your scan list is selected, make sure your volume is turned up and squelch is turned down, make sure your antenna is correctly installed. You can tune to weather channels for a constant source to check/confirm everything

I currently have a Uniden Bearcat BC72XLT, but it's analog...so when the police scanners switch for next year (our PD might actually be switching a little earlier) will I need to switch to something like this? From what I've done...this is the cheapest one I could find online that was a digital scanner (refurbed for $300)

Hey brotha, I did everything you did. I hit scan. The only thing happing is my 1 stays lit and the the other number blinks? Is that suppose to be like that? Maybe I did the p25 system? Does that mean anything?

kimberly patterson you should be able to swing by any radio shack and just tell them you need the programming cable for the 652 scanner. Most of them keep one or two in stock. Seems like they were around $30 bucks last time I seen them but it's been awhile. You can prob find one on the net for cheaper if you want, just make sure you know what you're getting and that it will work with your device. I tend to reluctant from buying cheap cables from China tho.
Is there a way to reset the ws165 to factory settings?

I’m having a hard time making a decision on if I want to buy this scanner or not, I have the scanner app on my phone and I listen to my local fire/ EMS and police and in the description of the feed it says this is the scanner in use but I’m not sure if that’s old information and if it will even work anymore with the new p-25 phase 2 digital system, unless of course radio reference is wrong
Well unless there’s an updated version, this scanner won’t RX P25 phase 2. Nor will it RX DMR or Nexedge. You can buy a new scanner that can RX them but if they’re encrypted you SOL again no matter what.
@@brycejcox yeah after some thought I’m pretty convinced this scanner will work so I think I’m going to bite the bullet and spend the 230 bucks on eBay, and if it turns out it doesn’t work I can always return it

@@benmeyer2916 no problem. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking the scanner, I like it so much I purchased a pro-106 as well (which is the handheld version). It’s kind of aggravating how many agencies have become encrypted tho because there’s no getting around that unless you’re a brilliant hacker maybe. Anyhow, I hope you enjoy your new scanner and it RX’s what you’re after, but if the feed is indeed P25 phase 2 I don’t believe it’ll work. Let us know how it goes, thanks.

Yea you don’t have any scan lists enabled. Press 1, you’ll see a number 1 show up on the screen, then press 2 and you’ll see a #2 show up, and 3 and 4 and so on thru 0. This will turn on your scan lists

Sounds like they may have switched to nexedge maybe. If you want me to check just let me know which county/state. You can check too. Just google it and see what system they run on

How do u reset to Factory Default?
Chris Zona it's been awhile but I believe you turn it off. Then turn scanner on, as soon as you see the welcome screen press 0, then I think it gives you a menu, press 1, then I think it asks you to press enter to confirm reset.
