Thank you so much for this awesome and educational post! After months of attempting to program my Whistler WS1065 for multiple P25 counties, your post cleared up any confusion and I'm now a programming junkie. Solid!
The local system recently changed to P 25, and I wanted to try some reprogramming immediately without having to dig up my programming cable and relearn the software. This did the trick. Thank you!
I keep coming back to this video every time I need help with my scanner, it’s very informative and I appreciate you posting it, one thing I am having some trouble with is with the wildcard enabled on my talk group it’s picking up annoying encrypted signals that I don’t want, for example whenever a signal is being received there is a DEC I.D number associated with it and I want to know how to remove just that one that’s encrypted. If it’s possible I hope there’s a way to remove that one while leaving everything else
I have 2 Radio Shack Handheld Trunked System Scanners. One is the Pro 106 ( Almost Identical to your Unit here except handheld & you run the yellow battery pack with Rechargeable AA's and it came with a home adapter/charger. If you run the black battery pack for just AA Alkaline batteries... It won't last a day. Also I have a 12v Cigarette lighter adapter for vehicles which charges and runs the scanner simultaneously with rechargable AA's and the Yellow battery pack. ) Not for the Novice just as yours above. Once programmed properly for your area with Trunked Systems and the Few Conventional Systems that are left in existence... You can clone another similar model Scanner transferring all programming to that Scanner while keeping the Programmed Systems on the Sending Scanner with a stereo type cord/cable.
I wish like hell you'd have been my neighbor a couple months ago, I might now have had to send my Uniden BCD536HP back because I couldn't figure out CRAP as far as programming it. This one looks similar, but it appears you need this level of sophistication in order to have a digital trunking scanner.... I think.... I'm thinking of buying this scanner.
Picked one up yesterday at Salvation Army for $10 with the programming cable. Looks barely used. Happy camper to say the least. Ty for the vid, it helps.
I have this scanner. There’s been re-banding here in Austin. Plus LCRA went to Open Sky from EDACS. I need to reprogram everything. It’s been 5 years since I used it. Ugh!
I don't expect a reply because this was posted 10 years ago lol. I have the same place scanner and when i program the Kentucky State Police i only get troopers but not dispatch.
I have the same radio scanner and I do exactly as u do and nothing works so sick of it thinking of smashing my scanner I erased the one frequncie that I was listening to and I don't know how to get it back.
I hear ya. I bought a Uniden BCD536HP and GAVE UP. I had to send the damn thing back... and I have a B.S. in electrical engineering. Talk about freakin' COMPLICATED. I wish the guy in this video had been my NEIGHBOR, I really could have used his help.
I'm using a Antennacraft ST-2 on my Radio Shack Pro-197. I know in the video you said that the front was to hot to use an outside antenna. I'm new to scanning. Can you give me any advise.
How do you edit the name of your channels? My scanner is programmed but when press a number to go to a channel it doesn't give the name it just says scan list 01 or whatever number I selected.
Helping my Uncle out here, they lost power and now when they turn on the scanner, it doesn't go to the program bank that I set up for them. They are far away. Is there any way you could tell me, from a cold start, the exact keys to push to pull up bank 9 (that's the one I programmed all their local frequencies in) and get them scanning again? I programmed this for them about 5 years ago. Trying to avoid a long trip. Thanks in advance!!
I'm trying to program my scanner. I followed all the instructions, I thought . Put in the channels but not hearing anything. I checked the weather on there, and I can hear that, but nothing else. Need help
So at 4:33 you go on about adding the I'd of the police department. how do you add more then one to the scanner. is it once you add 1 and save it will add it to the scanner as it's own channel and then you just keep doing that to get the stuff you want to hear.?
I have just bought this scanner, on amazon. what kind of things can u pick up on a digital scanner? for a digital scanner to work, do u need to connect it to a PC computer? many thanks!!!! Lee, in the uk
For some reason the Sedgwick county Wichita Kansas frequencies are not working no matter what i choose conv tgrp are even p25 !I know channels are not encrypted because I'm listening to them on broadcastfiy and police app on my laptop
They are the exact same scanner, just rebranded. See this thread for more info forums.radioreference.com/radio-shack-scanners/294887-pro-197-vs-pro-652-a.html Hope that helps.
Wow. Things have really changed in the scanner world! I want a new scanner but have no idea what to buy. Louisiana has gone to the LWIN so my old scanners are useless. Any suggestions or help available?
you may be the person who can answer a question since you seem to have the only video on youtube that even touches on Signal Stalker. I recently picked up the Pro 651; I had been using the analog Pro 26. when i performed a signal search on the Pro 26 i had it store the found frequencies in an empty bank w/ 20 channels. If the Pro 26 found a frequency already programed into the scanner, it would not store it. my question: how does Signal Stalker address duplicate frequencies? I have over 400 programed frequencies and I'm wondering how and if Signal Stalker has the ability to recognize them. same issue w/ Service Search. it would certainly diminish my enthusiasm for searching if there will be constant hits on frequencies that are already programed.
Idk i new to all this cant figure hiw progarm mine right damn radio reference wants 70 damn buck program it for u. I did ever thing how vid says still not picking up much
Willie Jackson It depends on what type system that your local agency is using. If it is a trunked system, then you will need to enter multiple frequencies and talk groups. Check out RadioReference.com in the database and find your county and system to see what is required.
I could use some help. I have a GRECOM PSR-255 hand held. It just descided it did not want to change channels and none of the buttons work. Turns on and off and has sound thats it. I tried to reset the memory and it did not work. Got any Ideas? Much appreciated.
When the scanner stops on the Encrypted Channel I hit the manual button... ( Which should stop the Scanner on that channel) then I hit the Function then L/O ( Lockout) button . Then hit the SCAN button to resume scanning.
However I like to hone in on the Encrypted Channels as they are Trunked Systems that they don't want you to hear. But an Experienced Radio or Scanner Enthusiast can tap into the Trunked System Ex: P25 or Mot 800/900 and find the Control Channel for that Group. ( I use Signal Stalker on my Pro 106 for finding anything transmitting in a nearby area ) Or you can as shown above use the Wildcard setting and just L/I ( Lockout ) which mutes any unwanted or Birdie transmissions. It's kinda complicated. But you really can't explain everything about how to program all the different modes and ways to tune these scanners in short or simple way. If you have a friend or know someone that works for the local Motorola Company or Subsidiary that Programs the Police, Fire & EMS Base & Car Systems you will be many steps ahead. But every time they change their settings once every few years Ex: Police here changed from Trunked Mot 800/900 Edacs to Trunked P25 System . You will have to also change your Scanner settings and Programming to keep up with the changes. I was in the Game working with Emergency Services but since retired I don't fight to stay current. But I do know enough to play around with mine and get what I want to hear. Good Luck 👍
That's the alert LED. You can change it in the settings for each channel to be any 1 of several colors. And the flash pattern or steady on can be changed. For instance you could have a flashing blue for local PD. And a steady blue for PD channel 2. Red for fire, etc.
Are you planning a new tutorial for AR listeners since the 11/2023 AWIN changes? I am in NWA and constantly monitored 460.625 for a conventional group but it has gone dark best I can tell.
On the 652 PRO anyone got a clue how to turn the LED OFF it's the small square led above the "up " soft key, That thing is so bright I could use it for a headlight on a Mack Truck lol thx for any help
hey steve i have like three to four small book pgs that i had read about my handheld that could send data from apersonal computr using apc cabel called wired programming and the other called on-air programming theres like 4 pages of notes on how you could get these methods to work come over pick the book up then you can help me how to finally program this scanner ok?
Yes. You use software to do this. Check out psredit.com/psredit500/index.html or www.starrsoft.com/software/win500/ or www.butel.nl/products/arc500/arc500.html I like ARC500 myself.

It may not even work now that they re banded
@@monitoringreviews it says the pro-197 can be programmed for rebanding wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Pro-197
I got this Scanner and it Works Really Good for NYC,
Great to hear!
Also the ST-2 is a great antenna. I can pick up Ft Bliss from Sierra Vista Arizona.
Can you please tell me how to program multiple talk groups in one P25 system????
i got mine by far i'm very happy with it be for i have a RS 106 i have no problem the RS 197 scanner
I don't expect a reply because this was posted 10 years ago lol. I have the same place scanner and when i program the Kentucky State Police i only get troopers but not dispatch.
Surprise! lol. It's likely you don't have the right talk groups programmed in. Check out radioreference.com for the programming
@@monitoringreviews lol, thank you.
@@monitoringreviewsI also heard someone saying to put Kentucky State Police on the analog side, did that and still the same problem.
I have the same radio scanner and I do exactly as u do and nothing works so sick of it thinking of smashing my scanner I erased the one frequncie that I was listening to and I don't know how to get it back.

Also I read about buying a software cable I cannot find where I would plug into my PRO-197 Digital Trunking Radio Scanner.
If you're trying to clone 2 scanners, use the front PCIF connection right below the volume knob but you will need the proper cable to do this.
If I remember correctly it plugs into the headphone jack.

That would be correct, just keep adding objects ( frequencies ) & they will all be in there
Can I use talk group and put multiple annalog channels into say channel 1?
I just bought a Whistler WS1065 it seems to be exactly the same face layout - how can I find out what my local system name is

Hey Thanks for the Info!
Wow. Things have really changed in the scanner world! I want a new scanner but have no idea what to buy. Louisiana has gone to the LWIN so my old scanners are useless. Any suggestions or help available?
I would suggest the BCD536HP or the BCD436HP. Either can be programmed with just your zip code. If course you can customize the programming as well.
I see it does ctcss and dcs but will it do NAC codes? Have a friend wanting to listen to P25. Been watching many videos on the 197.
No it won’t do NAC
How do you get the frequency steps set to 5 Khz on VHF? I want to enter 162.210 Mhz and it reads 162.2125
I found how to do it. I enabled "flexstep" so I can now enter in 5 Khz channel steps on VHF. Default is 12.5 khz
Will this scanner pick 700 meg channels

jack ferris It should beep and give you a duplicate frequency alert if you try to store one that is already programmed.
thank you; that is nowhere mentioned in either the RS manual or the 'Easier to Read' manual.
Programming AWIN also. Do i use put all frequencies for my nearest tower site or just the control channel?
I always program them all in just to be safe.
How would just program in just say state police troop b. I put in control channel and I’m getting everything
You would need to change it to ID scan only and program troop B talk group.
Idk i new to all this cant figure hiw progarm mine right damn radio reference wants 70 damn buck program it for u. I did ever thing how vid says still not picking up much
I'm in Kamloops bc and the rcmp digital radio is encrypted will the new p25 scanner still be able to listen to the police

Steven Rossman It sounds like either the key lock has been activated (if this model has that) or it is defective
monitoringreviews ihow do I deactivate the key lock?
Yeah, but can it run FarCry?
Actually, when programming frequencies and you referred to "conventional", does this mean analog?
Does this allow encrypted police radio Messages to be heard or if not what scanner is compatible to do this please
+6torp3 No, there is currently no radio scanner that can decode encrypted radio signals.
My scanner come up error and trunk originated and won't do nothing nothing is working what should I do
My Radio Shack is pre programmed how do I delete the freq. I do not want?
do you have any information on how to get rid of an error code on a pro 652 Thanks
What is the code?
How i get letter t to show up when the scanner is scann on
Mine keeps saying heap error with a code.. Can't find code online.. Any help?
Like the video :) Do you know of anyway to auto mute / ignore encrypted transmissions. Thanks :)
Alex Berry i don't. I'm sorry. I know the Uniden's and I think the TRX line of Whistler will automatically mute encrypted audio.
Ok, np. Thanks for the quick reply. Have a good one :)

......and I thought it was difficult to program the Uniden BCD996P2. I'd never purchase a Radio Shack scanner.

Is this the basically the same radio as the GRE PSR 500?
YES! Same scanner, different name on the face.
How do u find out what your system is AWIN How can i find out
Check out the database on radioreference.com
on mine the green light is on above up arrow....any idea what that means thanks
That's the alert LED. You can change it in the settings for each channel to be any 1 of several colors. And the flash pattern or steady on can be changed. For instance you could have a flashing blue for local PD. And a steady blue for PD channel 2. Red for fire, etc.
After I program if I turn it off will it still be saved?
Eunice Couch Yes, it saves your settings and programming.
monitoringreviews thank you
I wish u could show me a few things about my scanner
What do you need to know? What type scanner do you have?
hand held pro 106
What do you need help with?
Need help with West virginia
Maybe I'm a dummy but that looks too complicated I think it would be easier if they had a course at the community college near by.

How i get letter t to show up when the scanner is scann on
Do you know how to reset a Radio Shack pro 2052
Note: This procedure clears all the information you have stored in the scanner.
To reset the scanner, turn off the scanner. While holding down the 2 and 9 keys, turn on the scanner. CLEAR flashes for about 5 seconds as the scanner clears its memory.
Note: Do not turn off the scanner again until CLEAR stops flashing. Otherwise, the scanner might not clear its memory properly.
