I have had my Quest 3 for about a week now and about that headstrap-
It took a good amount of time to figure it out, but I was able to get the default headstrap to get pretty comfy. The biggest tip is to not tighten the back too much, if you start getting a headache you NEED to loosen it. From what I learned you should rely on the top strap to secure it to your head.

I'm an licensed optician and I just want to let everyone know that if you wear glasses, Zenni Optical will make your RX in lenses that will fit in the inserts for the Quest 3. I had them make a set for my Rift 2 back in the day and they worked great. I was very happy with how it turned out.
My professional opinion about the options available on those lenses, you'll want the oil-resistance. They offer anti-fog, I've never seen an anti-fog coating or product that actually worked. Oil-resistant will minimize the smudges and fingerprints you get on the lenses, however, and for me is the winning option over anti-fog. Zenni charges about 50 USD.

So true on the head strap. Got the Bobovr M3 Pro since it’s one of the most popular. Night and day difference. I can use it for hours now without discomfort. Only complaint about the M3 pro is it’s not as comfortable when trying to lay down flat in bed to watch movies / videos while looking up. It’s still totally doable but there’s a thick plastic part behind your head where the external battery connects

  • @TheExtraTerrestrial
    @TheExtraTerrestrial 9 месяцев назад +2

It was super cool at first, but once the honeymoon phase wears off, you start to notice all the problems. First of all, it's just way too heavy. The stock strap is barely useable. I tried many third party straps, but none were much better. There's just no getting around the bulk and weight.
When looking at a bright object on a darker background, there is a lot of lens flare/glare. I found this very annoying after a while. Because the screen is an LCD, black levels are very washed out. Finally, the pixels were visible to me. Sometimes I could forget about that or not notice it much, but other times, it was glaringly obvious. Battery life is really bad as well.
Anyway, that's my two cents. Love the tech, but not the device itself. For me, VR is still not "there". I'll keep waiting.

But I just saw that they released an upgraded version called the S3 Pro, which has a battery with double the capacity and also a slightly changed design so that you can lean back in a chair comfortably while wearing it. While I 1000% think that a upgraded head strap is an excellent upgrade, its worth noting 2 things about the default: 1 - Its not as bad for some people, I have used it for 90 min+ at a time without issue since day 1. and 2 - You know what you cant easily do with the elite or halo style straps? Lay down. the default is 100x more comfortable when laying down or laying back on a cushioned chair, IMO. That said, I'm definitely getting a new strap soon.
Something worth noting that you didn't seem to mention, is if you have an older device like a Rift or Rift S, or a Vive, or if you want to jump into VR for the first time and already have a PC, or if you just really feel like the untethered nature of the device is paramount, you can get in many ways just as good of a PCVR experience as most modern headsets, wirelessly with a choice of 3 apps to use depending on your network and if you want to buy an app. Or you can use a cable if your internet or equipment arent up to snuff. It's a capable PCVR headset, and until the last couple months where ive used it for a lot of AAA standalone games that are just as good or better than most PCVR ive played, I've used it for PCVR mainly.

The battery life situation would be better if it supported fast charging, but I've read it does not. I have only one main obstacle in investing in this... the number of free or low-cost VR content (apps & games mostly). When I checked at their app store, everything was $20 or more, which I find expensive. Finally, they shouldn't be shipping this thing with 128GB storage, and charge disproportionately for extra storage (like Apple does).

Exactly. Your logic about the head strap is on point. They are forcing customers to spend more money on their elite straps. Yes you are right, they will most definitely release it. I assume Meta didn't want to release the 128gb but then they want to attract the customer with lower budgets. And $499 is the more attractive pricing. In order to sell at $499, they had no choice but to offer 128gb which Meta knows is not ideal. Their profit on a $499 is probably very low. Hence they needed to make more money from the "richer" customers, so they just jumped directly to 512 and charge 30% more.

I played through halflife : Alyx (pcvr) on the quest 2, was one of the most amazing experiences. That and competing in sim racing, using vr (ACC and iRacing) is mind blowing!

If the Quest 3 is your first VR headset, you'll probably wonder why VR isn't more popular than it is. To me, this is the first headset that properly "nails it" for the average gamer who isn't into tweaking settings and just wants a wear-and-play experience. When I started, around 2014, I could see the potential, but it just wasn't quite there.

That's kinda what I'm feeling, q3 is my first headset and also my first time ever experiencing a real headset, it's blown me away with the immersion. Literally gave my lil sis my xbsx cuz I can't see myself playing "normal" games anymore tbh.

I honestly thought the mic would be a lot worse and the modmic would be much better than the built in one, but the external mic barely seemed better than the built in one. It was slightly better, but really not by much.

    3 points of feedback. :-)
2:40 Controller tracking: No, this "is not what happens when you use standalone VR". It's a conscious design decision due to the limitations of the chip. The Quest 2 had a very different area / volume covered by its cameras. It was more above and also behind the head of the user. The Q3 tracks more downwards. So this is why there are some tracking issues with older games. However, that said, I agree that it does have these issues and should really be better in that regard. I do wnat proper bow and arrow type gameplay. But we'll have to wait for the Q4 for this...
5:10 How strong the basic headstrap affects you does depend on how you set it up. There can be strong difference in the amount of force it applies. I had to wait a couple weeks for delivery of an alternative headstrap, so I've been using the stock strap for over a month, including longer sessions (not beyond stock battery) and do not have any headache issues. Unless I set it up too tight.
Q3 PCVR functionality could have been mentioned.

Hi Arno! Congratulations on getting your first VR headset! Im glad my videos helped you take the plunge!
Some advice as you are new to VR I would say just watch out for motion sickness. Some poeple dont get it when they start but some do (me included). Just make sure that if you start feeling sick to stop playing and take a break. Dont try and push through it.
You need to build up your immunity to the motion sickness and get your ''VR legs'' as poeple call it!
      Thank you for the comment!

This review deserves a sub! I love how in depth it goes and I agree with most of your points! This video was extremely entertaining and informative.
I’m kinda early in the video so I haven’t seen how he answered the three questions but I would like to pitch in.
I have played my friends quest 2 for quite a while and it’s a great headset especially for the 200 dollar price tag (without upgrades obviously). I recently bought a quest 3 and I am very happy with it but I think it’s very expensive which will be a problem for a lot of people. I paid about 500 dollars excluding tax (which was like 50 dollars because I live in Chicago) for the base headset and while I will admit its a great price of tech, you need a handful of accessories to get the most out of it. I will list the accessories I have purchased down below and then estimate the total price.
    -Bobovr M3 Pro (~$50)
    -AMVR Facial Interface 2pc (~$30)
    -AMVR Controller Straps (~$20)
-Bobovr Battery pack + dual charger (~$40)
    -Lens protector (~$10)
    -Carrying case (~$30)
    Total price of accessories: $180
Total price of accessories + headset (excluding tax): $680
This is cheap for vr in general but not everyone has $500-$2000+ to spend on a headset.
In conclusion, if you have money for a Quest 3 AND the accessories, go for it! It’s a great experience.
If you don’t plan to get serious about vr or you feel you might end up losing interest, buy a Quest 2. It’s cheaper but it’s still great!

Absolutely stellar review. But I do want to emphasize that depending on how your face's bone structure. The comfort issues with the headset aren't going to be the same for everyone. I was bracing myself for a horrible experience with the default strap and interface. But after using it for only 3 weeks, I nailed the strap tensions down pretty early on. And now it's extremely comfortable with even with the default strap.
Got myself some VR lenses and it's quite the experience now. :) Thank you for the review!

Great review! My hand is being forced moving from the index to the quest 3 due to Index reliability issues and lack of parts availability (cables). Having no PCVR wire solves a major issue of reliability in every single VR headset ive used. We'll see how this goes! Perhaps Quest 3 as an HMD as well as Index controllers will be the perfect combo

  • @cyanoure

I don't know how they did it, but the controller battery life increased a huge amount in the Quest 2 too.
I bought some rechargeable batteries for my controllers months ago, and I still didn't replace it, because the batteries in the controller didn't fully discharged yet. In the past I was used to replacing batteries every few weeks or once every month.
Everybody talks about the Q3 like "wow, the menu is so snappy", "wow, there is multitasking", "now I can move anywhere I want with the menu in passthrough without guardian". But this whole thing is true for the Q2. They improved the software a lot.

you can also use quest 3 outside (amazing)
kiwi battery strap is better than zaber
Update: finally bought the m3 pro with dual battery and charging station, it's definitely the best overall, you probably didn't have it on low enough/tight enough in your demonstration, have to make sure you adjust front strap so the top pads are pushing down pretty decent on your head. A colleague of mine bought a Quest 3 and we have both already (an older) Rift. I tried the headset and my findings look a lot like yours. I would like to do sport related apps with this stand-alone headset, but then you need a fitting strap, and the current one is not good. I find the VR not so much better than the older Rift, but the AR is completely new and a great extra. But for AR there is not so much apps at the moment. So I do agree a lot with your finding. But I would use my current common 10000 mAh battery pack, strap it to my chest with a simple strap holder and connect it to the headset. I find the one on the back of the strap or around the neck overkill.

The microphone MEMs array is actually really really good. It's the software's filtering and equalizing pipeline that's messed up. Microphones (plural) are in different spots compared to the Quest 2, so the Quest 2's filter won't work.
Seen some people fix it for PCVR thru equalizer software like APO, sounding almost as good as Modmic even.
Anyway, Meta 'should' be able to fix the mic with a simple update. WHEN they do that is a different matter unfortunately. Could be tomorrow, could be next year XD

Very good review. From my own experience, I concur this is a headset that needs after-market accessories to fix its shortcomings as it is sold. The same was true of the Quest 2. Meta seems more interested in making sure people buy their product, viewing it as cheapest headset, than making that solid first impression to ensure they become long term users.
My personal favorite headset to date is the PSVR2 (which requires a PS5) because it is lighter, has OLED HDR panels, and can be played longer. The VR2 Sense controllers last longer than Quest headsets, and they also re-charge really fast while the Meta Quest headsets can take hours to recharge. I also overall prefer the VR2 Sense controllers more than either Quest 2 / 3 controllers I have experience with, but the Quest 3 controllers are a great improvement over the Quest 2.

@@RyanClifford Not all games take full advantage of the VR2 Sense controller features like stronger haptics, resistive triggers and capacitive touch including on the trigger buttons, but when they do it adds so much immersion to the game.
Whenever you get around to trying PSVR2 for yourself, play Red Matter 2 on it. It is the uncontested most technically polished game I've experienced in VR making full use of the PSVR2 OLED HDR, headset haptics, controller haptics, resistive triggers, and all capacitive touch detection points. It also has fantastic 3D audio. The full package.
Another game I recommend highly for the PSVR2 is Synapse which has best use of the PSVR2 eye-tracking used for gameplay in my opinion.

Thanks for your review of the Quest 3. It is now May 2024.
I switched from my Oculus Rift S to the Quest 3 several months ago. When I put on the Quest 3 the clarity is so much better, and like you said, it was very clear looking around the lenses with just using my eyes. Yes the passthrough was very grainy when I first used it, but now with the updates it seems much clearer now. I don't use the controllers much other than selecting menus - seem to work well doing that.
Yes, I did get another 3rd party head strap and is very comfortable. I got the BoboVR S3 Pro head strap. I do agree with you, the head strap that comes with the Quest 3 is garbage. I never tried it from listening to reviews like yours. Everyone says the same thing.
I do not use the microphone on the Quest 3, and don't need any microphone for any of my game play, so this is a don't care.
Right now I play PCVR SIM racing games and have the Quest 3 connected via USB link cable. All the games work very well with the Quest 3. Still learning the device.
Agree with you again on the Battery, it has a very short runtime with the Quest 3 battery. I do have a bigger battery now that comes with the BoboVR S3 Pro head strap should I need to go for longer play times in SIM racing.
Right now the Quest 3 is my go to VR headset. I have tried a few other VR headsets in the past besides the Rifts S (my backup headset), and all the others I was disappointed with. They had either very small sweet spots or very glary and god rays.
Thanks for the video and take care.

So here’s the thing, I think you’re wrong about if it’s an upgrade from the index. It might not be a straight pcvr upgrade but the added functionality and freedom it offers you is a significant upgrade. I honestly hadn’t touched my index in better part of a year but the quest 3 sort of shocked me back into VR with the added functionality of standalone, and the higher clarity. I felt less of the screen door effect and the god rays are comparatively non existent. Really looking forward to replacing the strap I went with the bobovr s3 pro which is supposedly a bit nicer and does a better job of charging/keeping the head set topped off with a 10,000 mA battery instead of the 5k, also comes with a tiny fan to cool you off when you’re playing more active games lol. Honestly didn’t want to give meta any money but I have to admit defeat and say they’ve made an exceptional product.

I didn't have a huge issue with the comfort of the Quest 2 headstrap, but I noticed how much more I used it once I got the BoboVR M2 pro+ and a silicon cover. Just so much quicker and easier to put on and adjust. I do also prefer the halo strap for comfort despite it moving a bit more. I ordered the M3 Pro and a silicon cover before I even ordered my Quest 3. I haven't hadn't any issues with the 3 BoboVR batteries I have either (buzzing or rapidly discharging), although I've read that plenty of people have.
The comparative lack of binocular overlap with the Quest 3 compared to the Quest 2 did bother me or the first few weeks I had it, although I don't even notice it any more (the peripheral edges of the displays had a noticeable sharp drop in brightness and no depth) Not sure if they did something with firmware updates, or I've just become accustomed to it.

On quest 2 it doesn't loose tracking when you put controllers behind. Sure, accuracy is worse than with ir, but it still tracks by gyro.
I'm actually liked q3 mic more, except for pops and crackles. Expected knuckle style controller cover, they are nice thing.
In terms of weight, i got elite strap with battery (not Metas) and whole unit weights little under 900 grams. So for beginners i guess batteryless strap is more recommended. Going through chapter 10 in AC and wow graphics difference is huge. It's not immersive breaking but edgy grass and enemies aren't nice looking and upscaler has a lot of artifacts in moving objects.

I prefer the stock strap, but I have long hair, and pulling my ponytail through the Y keeps it anchored back enough that I can keep the strap loose enough to keep most of the pressure off my face. Also, with the ZyberVR neck battery, if you didn't realize it yet, one side has a removable battery clip. It drains first, then chimes your headset by interrupting the charge so you know it's time to remove the clip and put it back on the charger. By the time the non removable battery runs out, the clip is charged again, for another hour of charge. The best part is they will be selling the clips separately, so you could just keep the cycle going indefinitely.

Really great review for your first ever one. I've just subbed to you. I've also just ordered the Quest 3 and the Aubika head strap with battery. I already have PSVR2 but the quest really interests me. I can't wait to get it now.

It’s a real shame they didn’t make Quest 2 accessories compatible with Quest 3. I saw that people have 3D printed solutions for this but this is just one more reason it’s hard to upgrade from Q2 to Q3. I’ll probably get it used.

Yeah I know you can get a BoBoVR m2 pro attachment that makes it compatible with the quest 3 which you can either print yourself or buy from Bobo themselves. But that would have made upgrading a lot better for Quest 2 users for sure!

Really interesting review, thanks for sharing this perspective! I got the quest 3 since it just happened to be perfectly timed... it has enough resolution to properly display 3D Blu-ray movies at full 2K, and the 4xvr app was released to accomplish exactly this around the release of the headset. I'm trying to retain what is left of the panel life on my 3DTV so I had little choice but to give it a shot, and have been amazed and pleased. For me the actual gaming and MR stuff came second and for that I was kind of pleasantly surprised. Even my senior parents were able to use it thanks to passthough!

I have a 240w hypershop power bank hooked to a pouch connected to the back of my haptic suit. So far the weight is balanced, and my quest 3 stays charged for hours and hours on end!

Awesome content! Question: Can the quest 3 be used if I buy a Gaming Laptop (GTX card) and also how about an XBOX - S ... Kindly share your opinion

Hello! So you could absolutely use a gaming laptop with a quest 3 to play PCVR! But to do it will good FPS it would depend on the GPU.
I deffo know you wouldn't be able to connect to an Xbox that's for sure!
      Thanks for the comment :)

11:12 Am I the only one who thinks that the Quest 3 mic sounds better in this video, something wrong with my ears?
I mean it sounds richer, the downside are clearly the pops and other noises otherwise I would like it more. The bluetooth mic seems to have no background noises at all, thats what makes is better for the most cases of course.
Btw, this is one of the best and most helpful reviews I saw before, thank you for that!

Excellent review. As a VR newcomer, this really helped fill me in on the necessary details I need to make an informed decision. Well done!
