I have had my Quest 3 for about a week now and about that headstrap-
It took a good amount of time to figure it out, but I was able to get the default headstrap to get pretty comfy. The biggest tip is to not tighten the back too much, if you start getting a headache you NEED to loosen it. From what I learned you should rely on the top strap to secure it to your head.

Its hard for me to judge the pros and cons compared to other headset, but overall ive been loving it. The battery life was extremely lackluster, but a battery bank that i already had and a wire fixes that. I'm an licensed optician and I just want to let everyone know that if you wear glasses, Zenni Optical will make your RX in lenses that will fit in the inserts for the Quest 3. I had them make a set for my Rift 2 back in the day and they worked great. I was very happy with how it turned out.
My professional opinion about the options available on those lenses, you'll want the oil-resistance. They offer anti-fog, I've never seen an anti-fog coating or product that actually worked. Oil-resistant will minimize the smudges and fingerprints you get on the lenses, however, and for me is the winning option over anti-fog. Zenni charges about 50 USD.

It is such a versatile device that it is really hard not to recommend. I think something that I wish more people would talk about is using it as a wireless pcvr device. Great review... I tried a Quest 2 recently, for the first time, and I really enjoyed the experience. I'd imagine the Quest 3 is noticeably superior. The battery life situation would be better if it supported fast charging, but I've read it does not. I have only one main obstacle in investing in this... the number of free or low-cost VR content (apps & games mostly). When I checked at their app store, everything was $20 or more, which I find expensive. Finally, they shouldn't be shipping this thing with 128GB storage, and charge disproportionately for extra storage (like Apple does).

Only complaint about the M3 pro is it’s not as comfortable when trying to lay down flat in bed to watch movies / videos while looking up. It’s still totally doable but there’s a thick plastic part behind your head where the external battery connects

I don't know how they did it, but the controller battery life increased a huge amount in the Quest 2 too.
I bought some rechargeable batteries for my controllers months ago, and I still didn't replace it, because the batteries in the controller didn't fully discharged yet. In the past I was used to replacing batteries every few weeks or once every month.
Everybody talks about the Q3 like "wow, the menu is so snappy", "wow, there is multitasking", "now I can move anywhere I want with the menu in passthrough without guardian". But this whole thing is true for the Q2. They improved the software a lot.

What about if you have a Rift S? Would you recommend a Quest 3 in that case? I've been considering a dedicated PCVR headset but the really nice ones obviously aren't cheap and I would need to invest in base stations and controllers. Bear in mind I only use mine for Sim Racing, BUT.... using Immersed VR for the extra screens and stuff for my workflow when doing work would be awesome and that is another reason I'm interested in the quest 3. Also how is the latency on the Quest 3 vs. a Index or other dedicated PCVR headset? Noticeable? Thoughts?

    • @brandone7273
      @brandone7273 3 месяца назад

I just made this upgrade myself. Similar use cases, I'm a pcvr player but my primary interest in the upgrade was for using Immersed.
I haven't got a chance to try wireless pcvr or immersed on my daily driver yet (busy week) but after a couple of days of playing around with RE4 and wen browsing, I can say confidently that this is going to be a good fit for Immersed.
The text is very clear; clear enough that I've done most of my web-browsing in the device since I've had it, rather than using a laptop or phone.
I didn't expect to care for the passthrough (just a gimmick, I thought). I was very wrong. The pass-through is great and makes VR much easier and more convenient to use. Heck, I've been using it to read in bed next to my SO while they scroll on their phone. It's no more of an obstruction than having my nose in a book would be. I can have a conversation in the headset and it feels completely natural. I look forward to doing the same in my professional life.

I actually don't hate the default strap, I found it very alright, it's not the best but after jostling it around enough and adjusting it I got it to a level where I find it very easy to ignore and put it on, take it off all without any discomfort or issues

I also find the default strap perfectly good. I had originally planned to get a Bobo VR strap but I keep just putting it off because I don't really feel I need it. I'll admit at first I found the default strap downright painful after about an hour of use, but once I learned to adjust it properlyI find it totally comfortable. It's also much easier and faster to put the headset on or take it off than the elite strap with battery I had on my old Quest 2.

I didn't have a huge issue with the comfort of the Quest 2 headstrap, but I noticed how much more I used it once I got the BoboVR M2 pro+ and a silicon cover. Just so much quicker and easier to put on and adjust. I do also prefer the halo strap for comfort despite it moving a bit more. I ordered the M3 Pro and a silicon cover before I even ordered my Quest 3. I haven't hadn't any issues with the 3 BoboVR batteries I have either (buzzing or rapidly discharging), although I've read that plenty of people have.
The comparative lack of binocular overlap with the Quest 3 compared to the Quest 2 did bother me or the first few weeks I had it, although I don't even notice it any more (the peripheral edges of the displays had a noticeable sharp drop in brightness and no depth) Not sure if they did something with firmware updates, or I've just become accustomed to it.

Some advice as you are new to VR I would say just watch out for motion sickness. Some poeple dont get it when they start but some do (me included). Just make sure that if you start feeling sick to stop playing and take a break. Dont try and push through it.
You need to build up your immunity to the motion sickness and get your ''VR legs'' as poeple call it!

I didn't think it would happen, but the clarity and resolution bump - I just had too much trouble going back to the Valve Index, especially since the FOV is so close between the two for me. Index is still great in a lot of ways, but the Quest 3 just had too many things that made the experience better for me visually, so had to go with that. And, not having a cable is great, although it was never a huge issue for me with the Index, as I ran it over my head on ceiling. Thanks again!

The microphone MEMs array is actually really really good. It's the software's filtering and equalizing pipeline that's messed up. Microphones (plural) are in different spots compared to the Quest 2, so the Quest 2's filter won't work.
Seen some people fix it for PCVR thru equalizer software like APO, sounding almost as good as Modmic even.
Anyway, Meta 'should' be able to fix the mic with a simple update. WHEN they do that is a different matter unfortunately. Could be tomorrow, could be next year XD

This review deserves a sub! I love how in depth it goes and I agree with most of your points! This video was extremely entertaining and informative.
I’m kinda early in the video so I haven’t seen how he answered the three questions but I would like to pitch in.
I have played my friends quest 2 for quite a while and it’s a great headset especially for the 200 dollar price tag (without upgrades obviously). I recently bought a quest 3 and I am very happy with it but I think it’s very expensive which will be a problem for a lot of people. I paid about 500 dollars excluding tax (which was like 50 dollars because I live in Chicago) for the base headset and while I will admit its a great price of tech, you need a handful of accessories to get the most out of it. I will list the accessories I have purchased down below and then estimate the total price.
    -Bobovr M3 Pro (~$50)
    -AMVR Facial Interface 2pc (~$30)
    -AMVR Controller Straps (~$20)
-Bobovr Battery pack + dual charger (~$40)
    -Lens protector (~$10)
    -Carrying case (~$30)
    Total price of accessories: $180
Total price of accessories + headset (excluding tax): $680
This is cheap for vr in general but not everyone has $500-$2000+ to spend on a headset.
In conclusion, if you have money for a Quest 3 AND the accessories, go for it! It’s a great experience.
If you don’t plan to get serious about vr or you feel you might end up losing interest, buy a Quest 2. It’s cheaper but it’s still great!

I have remarks for new people, on the quest 3 to find the sweet spot use a ruler to find your eye distance, the numbers you see pop up infront of you are mm not cm so measure them in cm and x10 from the (middle of the piuple to the others middle) you should get a head strap too after a month or a bit, use any glasses cloth to clean the leanses 3-7 times a week and use tissues to clean the sweat I don’t really have a problem for the battery life and on the default head strap, rely on the top strap to hold it up and I like to make the cloth with the 2 adjustment things on the bottom of my head so the cloth thing is more down than up

Really interesting review, thanks for sharing this perspective! I got the quest 3 since it just happened to be perfectly timed... it has enough resolution to properly display 3D Blu-ray movies at full 2K, and the 4xvr app was released to accomplish exactly this around the release of the headset. I'm trying to retain what is left of the panel life on my 3DTV so I had little choice but to give it a shot, and have been amazed and pleased. For me the actual gaming and MR stuff came second and for that I was kind of pleasantly surprised. Even my senior parents were able to use it thanks to passthough!

Funnily enough as someone who got a quest 2 very shortly before getting the quest 3, I was actually extremely happy with the default strap in comparison and am still using it lol
For me its not uncomfortable at all, or at least not so uncomfortable I feel like I HAVE to replace it asap as it was with the 2. On the 2 i ordered an elite strap the same day I received the headset so even thought the default strap on the 3 is not the best, I'd say if you take into consideration where they're coming from it IS a huge step up.
I do also think the microphone is actually pretty damn decent for just casual play, Even for the time I streamed I had a worse headset mic than the one on the quest because I just couldn't afford a better one.

Your video finally convinced me. And I just got my Quest 3 from Best Buy maybe 3 hours ago.
Blown away completely. Now that I tried it with my glasses (I'm far sighted) the clarity is just unbelievable! Still on the fence with the stock faceplate and headstrap. But the few things I tried with it, while I was in the VR experience. I have to say I didn't even think about it anymore. But I do see for long sessions it's probalby a good idea to get something that feels really comfortable.
The elite headstrap without the battery pack. Does it add a lot of bulk in the back? I bought this to use with my sim racing rig that has a bucket seat. I just hope it would stick out too much from the back of my head.

    3 points of feedback. :-)
2:40 Controller tracking: No, this "is not what happens when you use standalone VR". It's a conscious design decision due to the limitations of the chip. The Quest 2 had a very different area / volume covered by its cameras. It was more above and also behind the head of the user. The Q3 tracks more downwards. So this is why there are some tracking issues with older games. However, that said, I agree that it does have these issues and should really be better in that regard. I do wnat proper bow and arrow type gameplay. But we'll have to wait for the Q4 for this...
5:10 How strong the basic headstrap affects you does depend on how you set it up. There can be strong difference in the amount of force it applies. I had to wait a couple weeks for delivery of an alternative headstrap, so I've been using the stock strap for over a month, including longer sessions (not beyond stock battery) and do not have any headache issues. Unless I set it up too tight.
Q3 PCVR functionality could have been mentioned.

While I 1000% think that a upgraded head strap is an excellent upgrade, its worth noting 2 things about the default: 1 - Its not as bad for some people, I have used it for 90 min+ at a time without issue since day 1. and 2 - You know what you cant easily do with the elite or halo style straps? Lay down. the default is 100x more comfortable when laying down or laying back on a cushioned chair, IMO. That said, I'm definitely getting a new strap soon.
Something worth noting that you didn't seem to mention, is if you have an older device like a Rift or Rift S, or a Vive, or if you want to jump into VR for the first time and already have a PC, or if you just really feel like the untethered nature of the device is paramount, you can get in many ways just as good of a PCVR experience as most modern headsets, wirelessly with a choice of 3 apps to use depending on your network and if you want to buy an app. Or you can use a cable if your internet or equipment arent up to snuff. It's a capable PCVR headset, and until the last couple months where ive used it for a lot of AAA standalone games that are just as good or better than most PCVR ive played, I've used it for PCVR mainly.

They are still very expensive here in Australia though 😢 and I’d probably have to get all the extra things you also recommend for it. But yeah. Would love to your advice. I’ll probably be using it mainly for wireless connection to my PC due to the 50+ vr games I already have on that haha. The mic though. I’ll be in a different room so don’t know if that will work or not…it’s only the next room across from the pc though but had the wall between the 2 rooms. So yeah. Lots of things to think about. the passthrough is lower resolution and a bit grainy, this is because i beleive they group 4 pixels or so into one for better visibility in darker environments
i also had HUGE ISSUE with the default headstrap, gave me and a few others bad headaches, apparently wearing a hat on backwards with the strap over it, it helps a lot
i think the speakers of the q3 are really good, if you cup your hands around your ears or on the sides of your face pointing back at your ears, you can hear the quest audio a lot better, i wonder if anyone has made 3d printable attatchable shapes like these as accessories so you can hear the audio clearer
