@ Well while i don’t mind you calling me a pony, I do have an update. I purchased the series S for the sole purpose of playing my digital games on there and leave my playstation for my disc games only. What i love is that now i can finally play GTA 4. I play Fortnite and Fallguys with my usual digital games. It’s been a great experience and honestly LOVE both consoles.
A higher exhaust temperature itself tells us nothing, we'd have to see what the temperatures on the chips are. If the chips are running at the same temps then a higher exhaust temp tells me the cooler is more efficient.
It would be nice if a real hardware expert would come out and squash the misinformation he is trying to spread. But then again they figure this is just RUclips noise and people who are in the know know this is complete crap.
All this is telling me is this: Xbox over designed some of the product and found EITHER a more efficient way to run the console, or they realized the chipset didn’t need that much QA. These changes are fine
Yup. Its the normal way of all things electronic. Just take a look inside an average DVD player from back in 2001 compared to now, there is so little in the new ones you wonder how they even work any more. Same with consoles now.
It's true. Maybe something changed on the power delivery of the Series S and they could save a few $$$ on the cooling system. Microsoft overengineers their cooling solutions. If they test the hardware and come to the conclusion that the cooling solution is overkill for the console that's fine by me. Even if the new Series S runs a couple degrees hotter, it certainly won't make any difference on the longevity of the hardware.
@relaxingstuff24 heat kills electrical components. So yes it can affect the longevity over time. A couple degrees might not seem like a big deal but long term it is. It's one reason why modern day consoles don't last nearly as long as older consoles do. And xbox's are more prone to fail than any other console.
Once again, we need to talk about how heat transfer works. First, the exhaust temperature alone does not tell you how much energy is being pulled away from the heat source. Second, at steady-state, both consoles if running at the same wattage, are going to exhaust the same heat. Let's dig more into both of these... Heat transfer: The amount of heat being removed from the system is equal to the mass of air * heat capacity * delta T. If we assume that the starting temperature is the same in both cases, a higher exhaust temperature means more heat is being removed at the same air flow rate. However, at a lower air flow rate, but higher exit temperature, you could have the same heat removal. Either way, exhaust temperature alone does not tell you how much heat is being removed. You need to also have the flow rate of the air to determine how much energy is being removed. Steady-state: The second big problem with your argument is steady-state. If both consoles are running at the same TDP (and if we assume the proper definition of "watts of energy the thing is using" and not funny AMD math), then the same amount of heat must be exhausted by both units. If we do not exhaust the heat, then it must accumulate. If it accumulates, the device will start to heat up and must either thermally throttle to protect itself (thus pulling less watts and reducing the energy input and energy that must be removed) or catch on fire and melt. So, unless the new version is throttling or a puddle of melted plastic and silicon, it must be adequately cooling. Similar to the above, we also need to talk about the comment that "if you put the new on in an enclosed area, it'll be hotter". This is the same problem as the steady-state argument. If both consoles are drawing the same amount of watts, both consoles must exhaust the same amount of heat energy. It must go somewhere. If both consoles are in an enclosed area, both are going to suffocate. The amount of energy added to the enclosed space is the same, the amount of temperature rise in the enclosed area is the same. (Note for the record: I'm not defending XBox. As a PC user, I have no skin in the console wars. I'm just an engineer that doesn't like misinformation.)
I thought we went over this a number of years ago where Gamers Nexus got involved and said Austin's thermal testing of the PS5 was flawed because he was measuring the exhaust temp.
The thing is, the way the transition from TSMC 7 to TSMC 6 works, is that, its actually just 7nm++ the designs are forwads and backwards compatible, you dont need to re-architect or re-mask, sure if you do you get better performance and efficiency, but you still get a decent bump without it The price per wafer is effectively the same which means that each chip to microsoft is actually cheaper on 6nm because more of them fit on each wafer The main reason to not go with a 6nm port is so you dont have to re-engineer the cooler But the weird thing is, they already re-engineered the cooler, as if they were anticipating the chip producing less heat I genuinely think that once they run through their supply of 7nm, that they'll just quietly switch over to 6nm, same performance, but thermals to reflect this new weaker cooler. The only reason they shouldnt switch to 6nm is if they already have way too much 7nm and dont expect to sell through it all, which may be the case, they designed this new chassis for 6nm, but realized there is not enough demand to run through 7nm.
Console revisions lkke this are SO common. Companies realize they overengineered for their needs and revised to save on costs while keeping same performance. These "downgrades" are fine.
So no one is going to defend Microsoft? Awwwww. I hate defending these billion dollar companies but fair is fair. Austin is talking about they should have went with a new smaller chipset. conveniently forgetting that we are only a few months removed from a worldwide chip shortage of any kind much less for video games. They're probably glad that they can get those. Much less trying to put in a new order at the foundry. I also recall a certain game company producing a cheaper system and then raising the price. Say what you like about the series s. Its still $275 or less.
I was surprised how hot the air is coming from the Series S exhaust. It runs super quiet but still it's such a tiny box running intense and demanding software.
Austin, you need to hear this yet again. There are engineers who have had years to see how the system operates and the kind of cooling it needs long term. They clearly decided simplifying it and stripping back a bit was fine, have no impact on longevity noise or heat. It also happens to reduce cost and that’s the end of it. Companies are not gonna spend more on manufacturing when they flat out have no need to. This was the same thing with the 1100 PS5s. I’ve had that since it came out and it runs, sounds and operates identically to my launch one. I trust engineers with years to decades of experience more than your opinion on it lol.
You’re giving the engineers too much credit. 1st gen Xbox 360 anyone ? Fact that Liquid Metal could pool to one side on a ps5 by standing it vertically which Sony markets the ps5 always in a vertical position.
YOOO Mr. Microsoft. Give us a usb external disc drive for the Series S. *Like they had HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360. That would make the series S even more fucking Dope!
At this point can we just appreciate the fact that Austin is basically almost the new version of Attack Of The Show with the This Is Channel even though he is kind of trolling because we all know he’s blowing this out of proportion 😭😭
Microsoft learned their lesson with the Xbox 360 and now they over engineer their consoles. They lost a loyal costumer in me when I found out they shipped the 360 with design flaws knowingly.
It’s not that they can’t get that power into the size of a steam deck, but mainly about if they can supply it with enough power for it to run for a couple hours
I use all the USB ports on my system because I store all my games offline on my console. I use the front port for USB thumb drives and the back ones for ssd, so my console has 8TB of storage
The motherboard ssds on the consoles should have used the standard 2280 nvme ssds since it's common on laptops, full size desktop pcs and even on the ps5. Amazon sells a bunch of 2280 nvme ssds with 8tb being the highest capacity from sabrent even though the 8tb sabrent ssd cost more than the xbox itself. I wish that 4tb would be the standard capacity for the consoles since the the newer games take up more storage. For my ps4 pro, I constantly have to uninstall and install a new game since the 1tb is not enough space to save the game to the internal storage for my game saves. Constantly installing and uninstalling games from the internal storage will eventually wear out the internal storage. On my ps4, sony does not have something similar to samsung magician software to keep track of the ssd to make sure that the internal storage is running at optimal condition for the long term just in case the storage needs to be replaced with a newer capacity storage device. On windows, with samsung magician software with samsung ssds, it will let me know if there some issue or some kind of failure is about to happen to my ssds. I have 5 samsung ssds on my gaming desktop pc. I have 3 samsung 860 evo sata ssd and 2 samsung 970 evo plus nvme ssd. I bought these ssds back in 2019 when I built my 4k Intel core i9-9900k desktop cpu, msi godlike motherboard gaming pc with g skills trident z royal 32gb ram at 4000 mhz at cl 17 latency and timings at 17-17-17-37. I wanted the fastest speeds at the lowest latency money can buy for 32gb that my motherboard supports since my motherboard supports 4600 mhz but 16gb of ram was only available at 4600 mhz back in 2019. I could not find 32gb ram with 4600 mhz with the lowest latency since the latency was too high since I needed samung b die for overclocking the ram with highest clock speeds with the lowest latency possible. I use the jbod format for my ssds so I have the full capacity for all my ssds.
That most likely means the processor is being cooled more efficiently. Unless your reading temps off of the processor directly, you have no clue. Higher heat exhaust on any console is what you want. You need to do a more effective test before making a conclusion. Come on bros!
Shrinking a XSX makes sense for Microsoft, because they use the chips in the xCloud servers. Smaller chips, less power usage for the servers. Therefore they did not need to shrink the XSS chipa, because they are not used on xCloud
I bought a Series S in 2022 and it didn’t have that block around the APU. This isn’t something new. The Series S is hands down the best console in terms of repairability. I did a repaste after about 2,000 hours and was greatly impressed with how easy it was.
Had a series S for almost two years, played it rather extensively without it ever overheating. Just traded it in towards a series X a week ago. Noticeable difference in graphics for sure!
I use every single port on my series s; ethernet, headphone dongle, thumbdrive for roms in dev mode, 512gb proprietary expansion card, and a 2tb external ssd.
i cant help but think that these are slow small steps for a handheld.. since they are shrinking everything even the main chip and the capacitors.. makes sense
Well, it is cool they are giving the Surface "easy to repair" treatment to Xbox. But... still locking the SSD is seriousy backward. They can and should encrypt *the files* not the drive, not the filesystem. The important stuff could be done on a smaller internal flash chip and then the Xbox would pull the OS and encrypted whatever files if they ever got corrupted. Imagine that, an Xbox that repaired itself and you could keep playing games. The external one being proprietary is even more ridiculous. One of the big reasons that if you're a casual gamer, you should go for Nintendo. Oh well... guess now there won't be a next one and there is no point.
The higher exhaust temps tell us nothing on their own, we care about heat flux which also requires we know the mass flow rate of the exhaust air. Together this can tell us how much heat it's making, but this is pointless as heat output is not related to the temperature of the die. I love you guys but please be more careful on your testing. THAT BEING SAID, the smaller lighter heatsink with less heat pipes is most likely going to cause higher die temperatures, but this is all the insight we can gain.
Interesting, I was having so much fun with my Xbox Series S. I didn’t realize there was a problem. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I failed to realize it. Was something bad suppose to happen?! Ok well I’m still waiting for something tragic to happen. How long will this take and when shall I expect the worst?!
Didn’t we went through this higher temp business with the Revised PS5 heatsink? Everyone defended Sony saying the newer smaller cooler with higher temps means more efficient! Ie it works better
I use all the ports. If you have been in the Xbox ecosystem for more than one generation, you WILL need more than one port. There are Xbox One games that are well over 100GB. Everybody is not spending money on expensive storage. We'll put our Xbox One and 360 backward-compatible games on a simple, cheap SSD and call it a day. I have two drives connected to my One X by USB right now, and they're both full. I also have a recharge kit and I keep that cable plugged in.
The Series S is such a great console to take on the go. I’m curious with the weight reduction how much lighter as a whole it is for that purpose alone.
traces ? They airgapped the traces ? I'll be darn . They fixed the false signal issues . No wonder it behave now , ok technically ? It's a revision . But this is way better then the original. It should run hotter slightly long term , why ? It no longer will paranoi on r&d side protection . Trigger happy for no obvious reason . As for cooler ? Do not worry , do you hear the fan ? No ? You are in range . Oh yes , you can hear the fan if it's hot . You do not ? It's in perfect thermal range to prevent condensation . I agree with him , it give the impression its worst . I suspect specialist will compare trace size and distance . If i am right and they airgapped trace and clean installed firmware software on these new system ? These are way better . See if i took mynfirmware and software and took it fromy my old serie x and put it in the new serie x . This is bad . See evrrything is remembered . But if xbox went from 2024 system with trace fixed to another 2024 with trace fixed ? This is a HUGE REVISION . They would be the only one with this . Yes now xbox hdmi 2.1 can go from 40 to standard 48 if xbox did this
Ah man. I am finally ready to pick one of these up. I want want to play Fight Sim 24 ar a level higher than my PC which is about to become obsolete. I'm super late to this gen of consoles. Latest ever since ATARI. This chip and fan thing makes me iffy. I like Microsoft XBox, the system, the games, what it's about. I reluctantly stared with 360 and grew to love it. The main issue I have with the Xbox, the only issue is I'm the type to play like mad for 3 months, stop for 8 months or a year, come back to it and what happens is eventually, a few years into owning the console 360 and One, it gets to a point where is I play a game for 1 hour, especially 2 hours, ESPECIALLY if it's all all day session, in the summer, it's hot and it puts out a burning electrical chemical smell which gets everywhere and stays for weeks. It's a weird smell, It gets in my clothes and because of that it's all I smell constantly, which is crazy because my clothes are in another room with the door closed and nothing gets rid of it. It creeps in everywhere In the apartment. stays for 2 weeks even without play, and then disappears slowly over a week. I always think it will burn the smell away away if I play enough, but it just gets worse. I have a sneaking suspicion it's that thermal paste they use to connect chips. That's just what I think. I have my Xbox One in the box for years. I haven't played it in years. It's the only downside to Microsoft XBox. That burning electrical smell which always seems to happen. I hope these changes don't guarantee that.
It’s bullshit that this gen of consoles did nothing to reduce the cost for consumers… especially after how hard it was to get these systems when they launched… they OWE the gamers better than this
Series x is now ouselling series s. Also, series x chip is used in the cloud so it's more important to lower the power consumption on the series x chip.
You mean the same frame rates we’ve played on for like 3 decades ? lol 30-60 has been the number forever you just think it matters cause they told you so
Yea nah, I own 5 (big family) I also own pc builds (2080ti,1080ti, rx580s) 30s fine also if ur argument is 60fps over 30fps you just made the point of my original comment 😘
Sad that Austin has it backwards... Hotter exhaust means it is pulling more heat from the chip, thus, the chip is running cooler. If the exhaust was cooler, there would be more heat on the chip... 🤦🏽💩

Oh my god, Austin! You're making the same mistake you did with the PS5 updated cooling system video last time!
So we can take the HEATSINK from the older model, like a broken older series s and replace it on the new one.
Making something that was over engineered from the start cheaper does not make it worse. It’s actually better because your getting more storage.
Didn’t we went through this higher temp business with the Revised PS5 heatsink? Everyone defended Sony saying the newer smaller cooler with higher temps means more efficient! Ie it works better
Austin: how do you manage to always look into the wrong camera? 😂
If I plug anything into the back of my series s other than hdmi and power cord, it gets hot. At one point it started causing errors.
Tbh the people who care about these kinda stuff probably own the old one by now, I think lol but its cool to know still
I use all the ports.
Can there be a "This Is" upload every day?
Being the end of life of a product people didn't play new, they are going all in on people still not playing it. It's the Microsoft mantra.
Anyone else see that F#%king Xbox One stamp. Right on it! No hiding sheet!
They should bring the first gen ZUNE back with a SSD drive in it.
Needed to make the series s mini they've already took the optical drive out I bet they could make it half the size without having to work that hard.
everything always get more cheaper and cheaper every release never better $$ moves
It’s bullshit that this gen of consoles did nothing to reduce the cost for consumers… especially after how hard it was to get these systems when they launched… they OWE the gamers better than this
Blame the chipmakers. They can everything cheaper, but that
Series x is now ouselling series s. Also, series x chip is used in the cloud so it's more important to lower the power consumption on the series x chip.
When did Linus start wearing glasses ?
Microsoft has married the ssd to the boards.
Is the black 1tb version the same as the launch or is it this new version?
given up on all the phones and consoles, just down to a led flashlight and an mp3 player, . . . and since the asteroid should hit soon, all good.
Soooo, is the carbon the same as the OG S?
Don't think I've ever been on a video so early
Dang, people are really finding everything to be a problem nowadays huh
I need microsoft to bring back the black series S but with 2TB like they did with the series X
On my series X i think id used all 3 usb plug ins on the S 2 of them between controller cords vuse charger and movie usb
Hello there :D
Xbox needs to learn from PlayStation and stop with the forced advertising on the home screen. We're 10 years into the PS4 & Xbox One lifecycles ffs
are they going to have a pro model?
Iunno about performance but it might make your room hotter. Or sip some more power to run the cooler.
bro i wish the games and OS was smaller too
Pure all digital is bad. Not giving options too. Yea they have 2tb but it’s limited nor permanent
Ima just save up to the ps5 slim digital because my series s can’t really handle any new games without overheating
The S stands for “sus”.
tell us the bloody model numbers!?!?!?!?!
Well twice the capacity in storage outpaces my doubts. Im ok with console being lighter. Thank You.
What is strong guys name to the left sitting one?
THEY'RE WRONG I TREAT THE S IS MAJORITY OF XBOX SALES
I don't see any problem with the new S series bro
Hopefully they make an xbox handheld with series S power that would be 💯🔥
The Series S should just die. People should just get a Series X instead. The console is like 4 years old now.
Series s should never die. I'm buying next gen series s day one.
This gen has been cooked anyways...
No wonder why we don't have Myth of Wukong
Still the best console of this gen lmao 😂
You mean the same frame rates we’ve played on for like 3 decades ? lol 30-60 has been the number forever you just think it matters cause they told you so
Yea nah, I own 5 (big family) I also own pc builds (2080ti,1080ti, rx580s) 30s fine also if ur argument is 60fps over 30fps you just made the point of my original comment 😘
Austin, come on... your doing the same mistake you did with the ps5
The X has been outselling the S for some time.
who the hell shops at target?
Why is anyone giving a sh*t about the Series S? What a turd.
That's one high tech trashcan 🗑
Man i hope the
new series x next gen slapps!🤔🙏
Hey.....they have to make a video about something 😂
I want a handheld series S
Its coming 2025...
get ready for a hotter console and lots of throttling lol
I would just run better thermal paste and problem solved
Definitely the worst This Is video, a lot of miss information. Engineers reworked the console that was overbild, nothing else.
i use 5 usb ports on my xbox one s...........
The additional usb ports is to connect a keyboard and mouse as some games use that feature.
Remember Xbox 360?
Which Xbox Series S to buy... Playstation 5 as ususal. Maybe PS5 Pro if you sheet money
It’s a good video ignore the bad comments fyi
He told y'all what's up now either cope or stop crying
Completely wrong 🤦♂️
Sad that Austin has it backwards... Hotter exhaust means it is pulling more heat from the chip, thus, the chip is running cooler. If the exhaust was cooler, there would be more heat on the chip... 🤦🏽💩
