Okay now I want to see a movie where the Digimon Sovereigns face off against the treasures of ruin. The amount of destruction would be truly horrific. Better yet have the digimon seek out and release the treasures because all they see is power, and have the pokemon journey to notify the Sovereigns because they know exactly how bad this is.

Great video! As someone who loves to look into the origin of designs, I loved seeing the side-by-side comparison of how these franchises interpreted the same or similar things in their own way. I'm pretty sure there were other Pokemon that were pointed out to have roots in Tokusatsu and specifically Kamen Rider, but I can't remember any clear example and of course none of them are as clear references as Lokix. As for the Mimic, for Pokemon you could also bring up Voltorb and Electrode, and Foongus and Amoongus, as both of these lines were obviously made to resemble Pokeballs, which acted as basically treasure chests in the games since Gen 1, and have played the role of Mimic in the past. On the topic of Thundurus and Tornadus, according to some interview, the Pokemon Sawk and Throh were originally planned to more so resemble Japanese Oni/Ogres, referencing the common motif of the "red and blue Oni", but as there was thought to be too much visual overlap with Thundurus' and Tornadus' Incarnate forms, they were ultimately made to be just regular martial artists. In Digimon, the motif of the "red and blue Oni" is referenced through the red and blue variations of Ogremon, Fugamon and Hyougamon, although Fugamon noticably lacks the horn that is typical in depictions of Oni. Lastly... I feel like for Zygarde, it's important to bring up that it is theorized that Zygarde, especially taking into account its various forms, is based on the 3 children of Loki that play a role in Ragnarök, the dog Fenrir, the poisonous snake Jormungandr and the giant ruler of the realm of death Hel. It might also reference Niddhog, but that is very much just fan-speculation, and seems less likely after the theory of it referencing the children of Loki came about. On the other hand, that would mean Zygarde would have a relation to Sleipmon, since Sleipnir was also a horse birthed by Loki. As for Xerneas... it is also less so based on Yggdrasil itself, although its resemblance to a tree, especially in its dormant state, is definitely noticeable, but a quartet of stags, if I remember correctly, that is commonly depicted as gnawing on Yggdrasils bark, which is also in constant arguement with the eagle in Yggdrasils crown, Hresvelgr, caused by the squirrel Ratatöskr (which Yveltal has also some design-elements of imo) that mediates between them intentionally incorrectly. On that note, Frosvelgrmon also would share inspirations with Yveltal going by name, although its lore definitely more so matches Articuno, which itself is theorized to be based on the Simorgh iirc from... Arabian myth I think? Anyways, Norse mythology, amirite? Just a complicated mess of hard to remember and spell names and figures that are only partially understood because of a lack of sources. Although all in all, I'm a bit suprised there's... so little overlap between Pokemon and Digimon in regards to major mythological creatures, on one hand major deities, like, Pokemon only really has one Pokemon that seems based on the Olympians, and that is Empoleon with its trident-beak referencing Poseidon, while Digimon has the entire group, meanwhile neither seem to really reference the big Shinto-trinity of Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, with only Digimon having Susanoomon (although Giratina also has some aspects to it that could reference Susano'os myth, even though most see it as a reference to Lucifer... which then is ironic considering Susanoomons appearence was to defeat Lucemon), or even their parents, the creation-gods Izanami and Izanagi... and I doubt it's for the same reasons media would generally like to avoid Christianities big G and such. Although even on a smaller scale, outside of major mythologies, there's little overlap, with Pokemon, at least in the first few Gens, loving to reference Yokai like the Futakuchi-onna with Mawile or the ever popular Yuki-onna, while Digimon feels like it only rarely bases things on Yokai imo.
I may have my own biases over what fictional monsters I prefure..but I love being able to nerd out over both and especially love seeing others share their love for these series together with smiles and happiness and not needless anger and arguments
I believe Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde also have another Yggdrasil connection. We've already established Zygarde as Nidhogg, but I believe Xerneas is also supposed to be representative of deer that dance around Yggdrasil and Yveltal an eagle that lives on top of Yggdrasil. If we want a non-Yggdrasil Norse basis for Zygarde we can also go with Jormungand, sometimes written as Jormungandr, a snake in Norse Mythology heavily involved in the Ragnarok story. All that said, I don't think any of that necessarily translates to Digimon, so I understand why it wasn't mentioned.
Why is it that I never realized the four auspicious beasts had negative counterparts. I fell kinda dumb now. I always loved the four beasts, heck anytime they're represented I always want all four and or the golden dragon at the end.
Because they arent very common. In fact they dont have much depiction in mythology. Even i, a chinese who grew up watching these chinese mythology shows had no idea about them until recently

I feel how Voltorb/electrod or even amoongus in more recent games are a better comparison to mimics, being they act the same way in the games as mimics do in classic rpgs

This was a fun one! I'd love to see Digimon's take on the Four Perils especially because we've had the sovereigns for so long. My GF and I made the connection between Mimikyu and Betsumon a while ago - monsters who both dress as another monster from their franchise - but they do it for different reasons, and Betsumon ofc changes its "clothes" while we haven't seen Mimikyu do so yet (though a Charizard or Eevee themed Mimikyu would be fun.) Well, Zygarde has more ties with the three calamity children of Loki with its three forms: Jormungandr (50%), Hel (100%) and Fenrir (10%). Curiously enough, there's a new Digimon connected to Fenrir (Fenriloogamon).

I don't know if I loved that Journey to the West show because I watched it at like 5AM while hopped up on coffee after completing my college finals (I ddi the same with most of the Pokemon anime at the time), but it was awesome.
It's also worth noting that the beast forms of the 4 djinn also share the same basis as the original 4 bit beast dragoon, dranzer, driver, and draciel from the original run of beyblade.
Justimon is more a reference to Riderman. Its customizable arm is exactly like Riderman's left arm as both switch out weapons for appropriate situations. Riderman is the fourth Kamen Rider.
Oh this is a fun one! I always love when you two come together to show there should be harmony among the fandoms. Though yeah i often do notice that pokemon fans tends to go off on other mon games or franchises for "copying" when they simply just took the same base concept of animals or mythological creatures or other cool ocncepts you can make a cool ass monster from. Maybe this can be helpful to ease up on that attitude a little. Great work as always gentlemen!

Funny about the Auspicious Beasts inspirations, the first time I heard about their mythical origins was through Bakuten Shoot Beyblade. Dragoon, Dranzer, Driger and Draciel are based on those Beasts, and Dragoon in the Anime had a more Chinese inspired form before becoming Tyson/Takao’s Bit Beast.

Since you have Terry Bogard from Fatal Fury in your intro, I think it would make sense that you should do a video where you figure out what kind of Digimon partners certain Fatal Fury and King of fighters characters would have.
i would also argue that the foongus and especially voltorb lines are intended to be pokemon mimics! that's how they're used in-game after all. gimmighoul just lines up the most with the traditional fantasy treasure chest mimic aesthetic, but it's actually the least effective at being one in-universe since items in the overworld look like pokeballs, not chests
The Sun Wukong Digimon is named Gokuwmon. You have to specifically remember the "w" because there is ANOTHER Digimon named Gokumon in Japanese, who would be renamed Reapermon in English, and that Digimon is VASTLY different from a _Journey to the West_ character. I had those Digimon figures that were shown during the Mimicmon segment, but I never had the cages. I didn't even know there were supposed to be cages for Digimon.

I had no idea the Therian forms shared that origin, but I totally see it now that Enamorus is part of the group. I still have not finsihed Legends: Arceus, so I will get on that! The new legendary Pokémon have me very interested in Scarlet & Violet also. And imagining them scrapping with Digimon's Sovreigns is just too good!
Gimmeghoul might look like a mimic, but it never acted like one in the games. When ever you see a treasure chest, you always know it's a Pokémon. The true Pokémon mimics are the Pokémon pretending to be items, Voltorb, Electrode, Foongus, Amoongus and Galarian Stunfisk.
I’m a bigger fan of Pokémon than Digimon, but I still find a lot of their designs really interesting! I don’t know or really care if they copied off of each other because they still depict the same things really differently, like with Infernape and Gokumon, they are both SO cool
You also have the Musketeers! I forget one Digimon, but Beelsatrmon and, I think, Beelzemon and the Legendary Trio of Unova, Cobalion, Terrakion and Virizion! Pokémon has their own D'Artagnon in Keldeo, but my memory jus isn't there with Digimon today for some reason... I think there may be some Yu-Gi-Oh! counterparts here as well, with the three that make up the Gate Guardian, Suijin, Kazejin and Sanga of the Thunder (yeah, that last name makes no sense, huh?), for example, as well as the Zoodiac, all of which I have a playset cuz of the 12 Devas, all of whom I am trying to collect in the Digimon Card Game as well, cuz, as you can probably tell, Tamers, and Pokémon also has a Chinese Zodiac theme going with the Fire-Type Starters!

This video coming out I can’t help but think of Elton John’s “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting)” and now “Saturday Saturday Saturday” is stuck in my head The lore and background was awesome to see. Most the digimon stuff I knew and some Pokémon but Landorus threw me so I didn’t consider the trio based on what they were. And I definitely didn’t see the connection with the genies to the sovereigns!!!
Great video, i love Pokémon and would say overall i probably prefer the franchise to Digimon, although certain parts of Digimon do blow Pokémon out the water, but its always drove me mad the way Pokémon fans insist Digimon is a cheap knock off

Although all in all, I'm a bit suprised there's... so little overlap between Pokemon and Digimon in regards to major mythological creatures, on one hand major deities, like, Pokemon only really has one Pokemon that seems based on the Olympians, and that is Empoleon with its trident-beak referencing Poseidon, while Digimon has the entire group, meanwhile neither seem to really reference the big Shinto-trinity of Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, with only Digimon having Susanoomon (although Giratina also has some aspects to it that could reference Susano'os myth, even though most see it as a reference to Lucifer... which then is ironic considering Susanoomons appearence was to defeat Lucemon), or even their parents, the creation-gods Izanami and Izanagi... and I doubt it's for the same reasons media would generally like to avoid Christianities big G and such. Although even on a smaller scale, outside of major mythologies, there's little overlap, with Pokemon, at least in the first few Gens, loving to reference Yokai like the Futakuchi-onna with Mawile or the ever popular Yuki-onna, while Digimon feels like it only rarely bases things on Yokai imo.
I may have my own biases over what fictional monsters I prefure..but I love being able to nerd out over both and especially love seeing others share their love for these series together with smiles and happiness and not needless anger and arguments
I believe Xerneas, Yveltal, and Zygarde also have another Yggdrasil connection. We've already established Zygarde as Nidhogg, but I believe Xerneas is also supposed to be representative of deer that dance around Yggdrasil and Yveltal an eagle that lives on top of Yggdrasil. If we want a non-Yggdrasil Norse basis for Zygarde we can also go with Jormungand, sometimes written as Jormungandr, a snake in Norse Mythology heavily involved in the Ragnarok story. All that said, I don't think any of that necessarily translates to Digimon, so I understand why it wasn't mentioned.
I didn't know Yveltal was based on Hraesvelgr. That gives me a new appreciation for him.
Why is it that I never realized the four auspicious beasts had negative counterparts. I fell kinda dumb now. I always loved the four beasts, heck anytime they're represented I always want all four and or the golden dragon at the end.
Because they arent very common. In fact they dont have much depiction in mythology.

I feel how Voltorb/electrod or even amoongus in more recent games are a better comparison to mimics, being they act the same way in the games as mimics do in classic rpgs

This was a fun one! I'd love to see Digimon's take on the Four Perils especially because we've had the sovereigns for so long.
My GF and I made the connection between Mimikyu and Betsumon a while ago - monsters who both dress as another monster from their franchise - but they do it for different reasons, and Betsumon ofc changes its "clothes" while we haven't seen Mimikyu do so yet (though a Charizard or Eevee themed Mimikyu would be fun.)

I don't know if I loved that Journey to the West show because I watched it at like 5AM while hopped up on coffee after completing my college finals (I ddi the same with most of the Pokemon anime at the time), but it was awesome.
It's also worth noting that the beast forms of the 4 djinn also share the same basis as the original 4 bit beast dragoon, dranzer, driver, and draciel from the original run of beyblade.
Justimon is more a reference to Riderman. Its customizable arm is exactly like Riderman's left arm as both switch out weapons for appropriate situations. Riderman is the fourth Kamen Rider.
Oh this is a fun one! I always love when you two come together to show there should be harmony among the fandoms. Though yeah i often do notice that pokemon fans tends to go off on other mon games or franchises for "copying" when they simply just took the same base concept of animals or mythological creatures or other cool ocncepts you can make a cool ass monster from. Maybe this can be helpful to ease up on that attitude a little.

Funny about the Auspicious Beasts inspirations, the first time I heard about their mythical origins was through Bakuten Shoot Beyblade. Dragoon, Dranzer, Driger and Draciel are based on those Beasts, and Dragoon in the Anime had a more Chinese inspired form before becoming Tyson/Takao’s Bit Beast.

i would also argue that the foongus and especially voltorb lines are intended to be pokemon mimics! that's how they're used in-game after all. gimmighoul just lines up the most with the traditional fantasy treasure chest mimic aesthetic, but it's actually the least effective at being one in-universe since items in the overworld look like pokeballs, not chests

The Sun Wukong Digimon is named Gokuwmon. You have to specifically remember the "w" because there is ANOTHER Digimon named Gokumon in Japanese, who would be renamed Reapermon in English, and that Digimon is VASTLY different from a _Journey to the West_ character.
I had those Digimon figures that were shown during the Mimicmon segment, but I never had the cages. I didn't even know there were supposed to be cages for Digimon.

i will admit that to me, some of these feel like a stretch but i am glad that this type of video came up. i love both digimon and pokemon and i dont know why the two fan base fight all the time.
I had no idea the Therian forms shared that origin, but I totally see it now that Enamorus is part of the group. I still have not finsihed Legends: Arceus, so I will get on that!

Gimmeghoul might look like a mimic, but it never acted like one in the games. When ever you see a treasure chest, you always know it's a Pokémon.
The true Pokémon mimics are the Pokémon pretending to be items, Voltorb, Electrode, Foongus, Amoongus and Galarian Stunfisk.
I’m a bigger fan of Pokémon than Digimon, but I still find a lot of their designs really interesting! I don’t know or really care if they copied off of each other because they still depict the same things really differently, like with Infernape and Gokumon, they are both SO cool
You also have the Musketeers! I forget one Digimon, but Beelsatrmon and, I think, Beelzemon and the Legendary Trio of Unova, Cobalion, Terrakion and Virizion! Pokémon has their own D'Artagnon in Keldeo, but my memory jus isn't there with Digimon today for some reason... I think there may be some Yu-Gi-Oh! counterparts here as well, with the three that make up the Gate Guardian, Suijin, Kazejin and Sanga of the Thunder (yeah, that last name makes no sense, huh?), for example, as well as the Zoodiac, all of which I have a playset cuz of the 12 Devas, all of whom I am trying to collect in the Digimon Card Game as well, cuz, as you can probably tell, Tamers, and Pokémon also has a Chinese Zodiac theme going with the Fire-Type Starters!

The lore and background was awesome to see. Most the digimon stuff I knew and some Pokémon but Landorus threw me so I didn’t consider the trio based on what they were. And I definitely didn’t see the connection with the genies to the sovereigns!!!
There's another very important pokemon that was left out of the mimic entry: Voltorb
kyuubimon and ninetales were by far the most obvious in that regard

Great video, i love Pokémon and would say overall i probably prefer the franchise to Digimon, although certain parts of Digimon do blow Pokémon out the water, but its always drove me mad the way Pokémon fans insist Digimon is a cheap knock off
