For Sinistcha and Polteageist, I think the difference that makes them separate species instead of region variants is the way of making the teas they are based on instead of the tea herbs that are used, which would've made more sense since Matcha and British tea do have different preparation procedures
Also, Polteageist is a deceased soul inspiriting a teacup, while Poltchageist was a Youkai born of emotions being put into a Tea caddy and gaining a soul all its own.
I’m not someone who gets super influenced by media, but this series was what kickstarted my interest in zoology - now which i’m studying at university! Thx a bunch Toby 😊🙏
Good for you!
The Shellos line's forms are actually based on the water in their habitats. In Detective Pikachu (the game), we see one form living on an island with a statue indicating that the other used to live there instead.
The Pokédex in the main series has been more recently saying that their form specifically depends on water temperature, which also lines up with their version exclusivity in OR/AS.
This video is so cool! The only thing I would have to say that is wrong is about the Hisuian Pokémon, Hisuian Qwilfish and Overqwil can be found in the wild in the Polar Biome. Hisuian Pokémon are next extinct, that’s just a common misconception. Also Hisuian Pokémon are not ancient forms, they are confirmed in game and on the website to have come from the already existing form. For example, the base forms of the starters already existed and then when taken to Hisui is when they changed. So Unovan Samurott already existed before Hisuian Samurott appeared, the only hisuian form that is the original form is Hisuian Voltorb which is obvious since Kanto Voltorb didn’t appear until Red and Blue. This video is really cool! Awesome job! Goodluck on your future endeavors!
All Pokémon in the Terarium are imported, so they’re not found in the wild yet. However it is likely that they’re still around, as they had to be imported from somewhere.
Hisuian Growlithe likely is the original Growlithe as statues of them can be found in Kitakami which implies the entire Japanese country of Pokémon was comprised of these fluffy little dogs but eventually either got outcompeted by or selectively bred into the non-rock variants we see today all over the world.
The PLA starters are definitely new as Laventon was the man who introduced the original three to the region and the only others we see are from space time rifts where normal Dartrix, Dewott, and Quilava evolved into their Hisuian forms to adapt to the sudden new climate.
All of the Hisui Pokémon seem to be subspecies or close relatives of their original counterparts with the exception of as you said, Voltorb and maybe Growlithe.
I'll disagree with them not being "Ancient" 😂
They're old.
Hisui Forms exist as far back as 300~ years.
The hisuian quilfish can be found in colder more polar waters they were probably only recently rediscovered
@@gabriellockwood2780 By that logic shouldn’t the base form be ancient since they came before the hisuian form? I see what you mean though, gamefreak really should have made things more clearer before they retconned a bunch of regional forms and cross gen evolutions into Sinnoh. Technically they treat Hisui as its own region so I see why they did that but it’s still really confusing. 😂
Its always wonderful to see this tree grow and change with each region. The biggest thing I'd bring up is Sigilyph being a golem alongside Claydol, its shape being what granted its typing
I just realized...if Gyarados and Milotic are Reptiles of the Draconis line, could Magikarp and Feebas actually not be Fish but Icthyosaurs?
I applies it’s possible. I think with Pokemon like that it’s just the “Laval stage” mimicking another sucsessful look
Does Milotic even have any reptile/dragon traits besides Dragon-type moves? It's based on the giant oarfish.
This might be a bit late, but there is one thing wrong about Farigiraf's placement.
Giraffes are Even-toed ungulated, while horses are Odd-toed ungulates. This means that giraffes are more closely related to deer, pigs, antelope and even whales, while horses are closer to rhinos and tapir
Toby it has been confirmed pretty much in the Indigo Disc that the Paradox pokemon are from the past and future of alternate timelines
With the recent reveal of Pecharunt as a Pokémon capable of making other Pokémon stronger via a toxic chain I wonder if it has any connection to the Pokérus which causes the infected Pokemon to grow stronger until their immune system is able to partially cure them as the effect of the Pokérus always remains, much like the toxic chain. Also both Pecharunt and the Pokérus have the same pinkish purple colour scheme, which was the reason I even had this thought.
I'm surprised you didn't move golduck to the monotreme section. It has all the details described by a platypus. Including Bioluminescence.
It is called the duck pokemon, but that doesn't mean it is a duck, it just means that is what people call it.
You absolutely could to be fair haha
With ludicolo and Magmortor there could be a whole line of platypus-like monotremes.
The magmar 'feathers' a close resemblance to blissey's feathers
Bewear is interesting because it’s either a bear that looks like a red panda or a red panda that looks like a bear, both equally viable options.
Octillery will always be the one Pokémon that makes evolution like this oh so confusing
Kleavor and the Hisuian Qwilfish line actually exist in the Blueberry Academy's Terarium.
I should also mention that the Hisuian Growlithe line didn't go extinct. Just ask Perrin.
Thats an artificial environment so they could very well have been brought over
@@PHiLLy2c
Yeah, brought over from somewhere where they're not extinct.
Thank you very very much for this series Toby, it has honestly been one of the best series I've seen here on RUclips, not just Pokémon related content, but on the whole platform. I love Pokémon and this way that you've mapped them out genetically is just so fascinating and inspiring to me, thank you!
Thank you for everything, Toby. I got a a copy of the tree for Christmas, from my son. Pokemon is a bond I share with both my kids. I’ve greatly enjoyed your videos throughout the years, and I will be sad to see you leave RUclips, but I know whatever you decide to do in the future, you’ll be a huge success. Merry Christmas to you and Phoebe. 💜💜💜
aww thank you so much and merry Christmas ^_^
Exploud's mouth looks super hippo-like, I think you could make a case for it being closely related to Hippowdown by virtue of them using a near-identical gas expulsion system; Exploud for concussive blasts and Hippowdown for aerating the sand in its habitat to hide beneath the surface.
I could see that too actually
Over the years I’ve always found the tree of life to be one of your strongest set of videos, an amazing deep dive into the biology of the Pokémon world is such an amazing idea and I’m glad I grabbed myself a poster of it before it’s gone
Also to answer what I think about slowbro relationship to slowking and it’s galarian form, I personally believe it’s just a hair more related to Slowking because of their relationship to regular slowpoke, being two final forms of the same Mon.
I just ordered the poster and a team snooze pin. This video is great! I've loved this series for the longest time. I'll miss you making new videos and I wish you the best in your future endeavors. Happy holidays!
The pokemon tree of evolution is the only bit of youtuber merch I've ever bought and I love it. I wish you the best of luck for 2024 and what that journey brings you! I hope to see you return, even if it's something like monthly videos on the side of what may be your new career. Would love to see how the tree of evolution evolves with the inevitable introduction of new pokemon, forms variants etc
Toby this was brilliant mate!! I loved the deep dive into all the pokemon, seeing how certain branches and pokemon explanations have been updated with new information. The quality is top notch. Gosh i remember when you first unveiled this project, it's still one of the best projects on RUclips! Well done bro! ^_^
So glad I got the poster! I'm so happy with it and it just warms my pokemon fan heart
Im glad I was able to order the Tree of Life poster just a few days before it goes outta sale. I’ve always wanted my own version but I was never able to, so it’s sorta cool and bittersweet getting one now.
As someone who helped fund the Kickstarter for this series way back when - seeing it come this far is so dope! Thank you Toby!
It's been an absolute pleasure watching you over the years.
I do hope you come back to youtube soon. Merry Christmas!
Soar High Toby!
That is a beautiful gift. Thank you for all these years Bird Keeper Toby!
This is just about perfect, and I'm amazed at your skill in editing and production. My only nitpick is the Pika clones. I don't like that they're all on one branch. It makes more sense to me that they'd be separate lines that convergently evolved similar defense strategies.
Also, giraffes are clearly related to cattle, deer, and goats, not horses.
Pachirisu was been stated to be related to the Pikachu line in its description in Legends: Arceus.
A relationship to Dedenne can also be read from the image in the Paldea Pokédex coupled with the Legends and Scarlet descriptions, but that doesn't mean much.
All of them are rodents or rodent-adjacent, so I don’t know why Toby kept them all in one isolated branch.
with the shelmet and Karrablast i think there is an explaination that dosnt need exchanging dna
when shelmet evolves it could be that it sheds its shell and karablast takes that and evolves(kinda like how slowpoke evolves)
It is so epic to watch this video as a whole, being there when the Lapras-Squirtle video got out and now seeing how far it really has come. You really can be proud of this amazing Pokémon tree!
the thing that sells me on magmar being a bird is that its name in both English and Japanese is likely based in birds (the fulmar in English and booby in Japanese)
By the end of the video I'm in tears. What an amazing job you've done on this project, Toby!
I always saw Alakazam as more of a cat personally
Your channels been a great series to watch over the years and i wish you the best on whatever you choose to do next :)
I have been watching since before the very first pokémon tree of evolutionen video and the tree of life has always been my favorite series of yours. And again i am amazed at how a silly game like pokémon kan have such amazing evolutions. Your tree of life projekt has been super super cool and wow... just wow
Thanks for your entertaining content Toby! We’ll miss you! 😢
huh, never thought of Machamp and Golem of swapping/borrowing traits in the same way Shelmet and Karrablast quite literally do.
Crazy Toby is gone, he’s one of the first poketubers I ever remember stumbling across - before even knowing the world of poketubers existed. Good luck to him tho and hoping he comes back some day to grace us w more Poké-lore & science.
The way i view it, Sinistcha is a Yo-Kai born from a tea cup/pot, while Polteageist is a poltergeist that’s just haunting/living in a tea pot. Sinistcha is the teacup while Polteageist just lives in it
This is awesome, gonna miss your videos Toby! 😭
thank you to everyone involved in this work of art and research!
You get a Machamp by trading Machoke with anything, not just Graveler.
This is true but a fun theory to not mention
@@BirdKeeperTobyyes and i do think that if machoke and graveler had been introduced in gen 5 like shelmet and karrablast then they would've needed to be traded with each other
I took this video as an inspiration / reason to finally hang up my third tree of life poster. now the gen 7, gen 8 and gen 9 version are on my wall
Thanks for the grand adventure, Bird Keeper Toby. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
If birdkeepertoby is really close to the end this is the perfect send-off. You can tell a lot of love went into this.
Electabuzz and Electivire should be apes because Electabuzz is a Sasquatch, maybe its pattern is just inspired by tigers, but its anatomy is more ape-like than anything
this ROCKS SO HARD
Im gonna miss this tree being updated every generation
Watched the original video years ago when ut only went up to gen 7, so much has happened since! Thanks for the update!
i'm so glad i ordered the tree of life poster! i've been subscribed to you for 8 (?) years and I've always thought this series was super interesting ❤
Man I’m gonna miss these sorts of videos. Good luck on your next chapters!
I'd argue relabeling Venusaur as a protomammal or paramammal. Classifying it as just a synapsid is akin to classifying a bird as an archosaur. While not wrong it's not as precise as u can get bc all mammals are still synapsids.
This video implies Magikarp is a reptile that convergently evolved to look like a fish, which is... perfect. I love reptile Magikarp
I love how the aliens get their own branch.
I'm going to miss your vids, they were wonderful background noise to turn my mind off too when my mum had passed away. Thank you for that. I hope you go on to great succeess in your future plans. Its been a blast! :)
Thank you for these incredibly kind words. My videos will always be here to offer background noise if you need to a nostalgic place to retreat back to ^_^ all the best to you
Masterfully edited wow! Ok damn I'm buying the poster xD
I love this so much. There’s one more thing about rock pokemon being from space. We see meteorites in multiple entries, with deoxys hopping a ride here on one. Rock and steel pokemon on a planet that exploded or had the environment to create meteors would allow them to pass to our world
56:30 - In biology, this is called Symbiosis - interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both.
The other example of this is Remoraid sticking under mantine. The real life example of this being Remoras and Sharks.
The remora receives a convenient food source, the scraps of shark food, the sharks protect them from predators and give them free transportation throughout the oceans. Remoras keep the waters clear of scraps around the shark, preventing the development of unhealthy organisms near the shark.
Thank you, Bird Keeper Toby, for the fun ride that you have brought us all on! It'll be sad once you are gone, but maybe there will be some new lore that brings you back!
I love the time and effort you put into the trees. Only changes I would make would be adding Blissy, Muk & Koffing to the space/rock branch. I always felt that Blissy was related to Wigglypuff & Claifairy, that Koffing was related to Geodude, & I think that Muk is based on the Blob which was a creature that came from space.
The one Pokémon that I cannot decide what it is, has to be Psyduck. I can’t decide if it is a duck or a duck-billed Platypus
Pokémon GO confirms that the Nidos are rabbits, as they’re typically featured in their Easter events alongside other Pokémon who are undoubtedly rabbits
For years I've been a believer that Slurpuff should have always been in the mammalian branch, but with the theory of all plant like pokemon steming from Cradily, the ancient roaming plant life, I have finally been convinced.
Such a wild journey, this exploration into Pokemon life has been, and I, for one, have no major objections to your placements. Best of luck on the next step of your journey, and I'll definitely be placing new discoveries into the tree as they come up, all based in your research.
Soar high, Bird Keeper.
This is so dope. PC should let us be the Lorekeepers lol. I have a similar theory but its top-down beginning with origin of Arceus and other legends and how they influenced. Hate I discovered you so late, but this helped with my own Monster Taming game idea. Hope next endeavors are fun!
It’s possible that yea sada and turo attempted to get Pokémon from alternate timelines but they miscalculated and got it from their own past and only assumed they were from alternate timelines like in the cutscene they assume they’re in one
My absolute favourite theory you've made! Thanks for nine awesome years, Toby, and good luck with all you do next!
I'm screaming and just clicked the video. Going to miss you, Toby!!! Excited for you to do you!!!!
Man! I was thinking of doing something like that and damn! Everything is already done in those days! 😂 Thank you for the video, it is awesome! I love Pokemon and Taxonomy!
Thanks for this masterpiece
Thank you so much for years of concet your inspirational to me Toby I bought your tree of evolution poster, even though I'm regoulus, i always love since it explains God's (or arceus) design for all living things
something about polteageist and sinistcha, they are both made of tea leaves yes but polteagiest is specifically a black tea while sinistcha is matcha, who knows there may be a green tea varient
Hey Toby, I might not have been your biggest fan over the time, but I really enjoyed your videos and theories here and there. Putting this tree of evolution together, refinining it over the years, agreeing to disagree in previously made assumptions, that's actually scientific work. So if there will ever be a real world science branch of 'Pokémonology', you'd better step up to become Professor Toby!
I also must admit, your closing words of this wonderful video brought me some chills and a little tear. And I'm a grown man of 34. Doesn't matter.
I wish you all the best for your future plans and I'm thankful for your contrubution to the Pokémon Community.
Hehe, funny how we have confirmation that the Paradox Pokemon are just alternate timelines, so they'd be closely related to the Pokemon we view them as like how closely Donphan would be related to Great Tusk and Iron Treads.
For Slowbro:
I believe that Trade Evolution forces the hidden power in Pokemon DNA to activate, forcing evolution. So I think Galarian Slowpoke is the original Slowpoke because it doesn't need to be traded to evolve. Then, it spread out of Galar, couldn't rely on Galarica anymore, and evolved into Kantonian Slowpoke, which is just more adaptable, so it wouldn't need an item to evolve into Slowbro. However, because of this, it needs both an item and trading to unlock its power and become Slowking
Toby is not allowed to leave until he changes Orthworm leaves the mollusk category and either becomes an Annelid or joins Steelix in the tree. These are the only two I accept
Eleventh, also, sad how pokerus is gone in sc/vi, we should riot about this...
Would be really cool to get a video (maybe on the vlog channel?) that shows all the versions of this poster side-by-side, showing how it's _evolved_ since the beginning of the endeavor.
Finding this video while high was the best thing to happen. Clampearl being an egg and not a Pearl just blew my mind. It makes way more sense
And yeah now with Magikarp and Feebas, I’m rethinking how I look at Pokémon as a whole. This is amazing
Feebas looks dead so Sharpedo doesn’t eat it thinking it’s already dead. Fuck yeah that’s so cool
Ryhorn also had little mini versions of themselves on the island with Nidoqueen. I now 100% believe Giovanni was testing cloning on Rydon line. Having clones that just become an all female or all male line which are both technically separate from each other makes perfect sense. If they cloned a female Rydon it became Nidoqueen line and if they cloned a male Rydon it became Nidoking line.
Think about it. Female DNA has two X chromosomes and Male DNA has an X and a Y chromosome. If the cloned female Rydon was cloned using only its X chromosomes, there would be no Y chromosome that just magically shows up so the Nidoqueen line can never have males and can never have offspring.
If Nidoking cloning was was done using male Rydon DNA, there would be both X and Y chromosomes in use - both may be needed to actually reproduce.
Ultimately Nidoking and Nidoqueen lines are both either failed Rydon experiments or test subjects for research.
WAIT - What about Nidoran? They are extremely reminiscent of another Pokémon from Kanto. One that would be perfect to Giovani’s little reindeer games… Rattata.
When trying to clone Rydon they combined the dna with rats which created an abomination of a creature: Nidoran. A lab rattata that mutated as a result of cloning experiments with male and female Rydon and/or just the X&Y chromosomes in general (or the Ratatta they tested on was either male or female)
For Magmar, they are to dragons what birds are to dinosaurs.
It’s easy to imagine both dragons and dinosaurs having bird-like ancestors with the only difference being that dragons passed down their fire ability
I'm a bit late but I think the Exploud line are Hippos, based on the mouths. Also Whismur is pink, like a baby hippo 🤷🏿♂️ and they learn crunch naturally... rabbits wouldnt!
Then explain why Whismur has Bunny Ears
Thank you Toby
8:40 I think there's a recent push that puts plesiosaurs in with stem turtles. I'm not sure its comclusive considering turtles have recently been more strongly pushed as diverging from early archosaurs
I think the reason Sinistcha is a convergent from of Poltegeist is that Polteagiest is in fact just tea with ghost powers while Sinistcha is a spirit
To be fair flygon DOES look a lot like a dragonfly
I think the issue with nidorina and Nidoqueen being unable to breed is only a problem within captivity. Just like many other animals in the real world.
i like to think that Trubbish is actually a cat
cause there is official merch out their, that shows all sorts of cat Pokémon, but also a Trubbish among them
and think about it
there are stray cats
in an interview with Takao Unno, he mentioned that the idea of Trubbish is that it is a Pokémon disguised as a trashbag
+ where do cats like to hide? inside the stupidest of places
An interesting note on echinoderms and Starmie, is that the real-life family is called Asteroides. So staryu is an asteroid :)
Not ready for you to leave Toby merry Christmas tho
22:59 "It lays *eggs* like a *mammal* "
DOH! xD
I was going to rage about how this is not EXACTLY like how I would have done it, but saying Quagsire has survived due to being goodest of bois salvaged everything! Thank you for the years of entertainment and I hope wherever life takes you is as wonderful as can be.
I’m gonna be sad to no longer watch videos on this. I bought a Tree of Life poster and a team snooze pin to show my support of your incredible work on these types of videos. Good luck on the next chapter of your journey be it on RUclips or not
i think electivire is definitely a great ape, it just has that big gorrila-esque energy, i think it probably just evolved those stripes for intimidation, like tigers. like convergentant evolution. it doesn't feel enough likeba cat to convince me that it is one. and i think magmortar might be a monotreme like blissey, it doesn't feel like a bird to me. it seems more likely that it is just a mammal with some bird-like traits, like with blisseys "feathers".
EDIT: gonna add more as i watch, to me sigilyph has always felt more like it might be related to pokemon like unown and wobbuffet, i don't think its a bird i think its just a psychic being with wings
i also forgot to mention this but i think breloom is probably more likely to be a mushroom that has evolved to look like a kangaroo rather than actually being a kangaroo, looking at shroomish theres no way its anything mammalian so i think when it evolves it just gains traits of mammals for defense rather than actually being a mammal
i think alcremie and slurpuff should definitely be in the pixies/sprites section instead of the plant life. i think calling these "sugar cane" pokemon is a bit of a stretch, i think its more likely that they're not actually made of sugar and have just evolved to look like deserts. and i think daschbun is probably just a dog, not special in any way. i think its a stretch to say that its not related to houndstone and mabosstiff, again i think its just a dog that evolved to look like a pastry instead of actually being a pastry. and i think slurpuff looking like a dog has less to do with it being related to dachsbun and more to do with it just wanting to appeal to humans more so it evolved some dog-like traits
the Magmar line is clearly a genetic mixture of birds *and* lizards. if draconids exist, then genetic mixtures of distinct but related creatures can too
It’s not time yet, I miss you!
I love this poster, my favourite part is wo chien giving arceus the stank eye
Drapion is a scorpion so it should be in the arachnid category
Gligar and gliscor are scorpion flies
Mecoptera (from the Greek: mecos = "long", ptera = "wings") is an order of insects in the superorder Holometabola with about six hundred species in nine families worldwide. Mecopterans are sometimes called scorpionflies after their largest family, Panorpidae, in which the males have enlarged genitals raised over the body that look similar to the stingers of scorpions, and long beaklike rostra.
decided to buy a tree of evolution will be my second one, its too bad we wont get one for the next gens but guess that leaves it up to us to create and keep theorizing
Corcett my friend
If I never hear the phrase "the likes of" again it'll be too soon
I've speculated that the Tapu s could be related to Zygarde, perhaps originally being cores.(With the "Guardian of Alola" attack being a reminder of their larger body)
The situation with Wyverns being dragons is like squares and rectangles. All squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares.
Oh this is GORGEOUS work! Are any prints of it still available? I didn't see a link to it in the description. Did it get removed?
In relation to Karrablast, Escavalier, Shelmet, and Accelgor, Lockstin/Gnoggin had a video discussing their inspirations. Karrablast is based off of a species of beetle that eat snails. When they evolve via trade, Karrablast gets the shell of Shelmet when it attempts to eat it, causing Karrablast to evolve into Escavalier. Meanwhile, Shelmet adapts to move quickly, evolving into Accelgor. The wrapping around Accelgor's body are like bandage wrappings due to the physical trauma from Karrablast trying to eat it. They might also be slime or something that snails can produce.
Slowpoke seems like it’s based in the Giant Otter. They even dangle their tails in the water the way slowpoke does.
I believe that terapagos, zygarde, eternatus, kyurem and necrozma are related since they're alien and I think they just came down at different times. I think paradoxes are somewhat related to other pokemon but they're much like UBs.
Toby: There are a couple Pokémon bugging me here
Me: Toby, never say that again.
Also me:
...oh...
