Simon the Sorcerer is a 1993 point 'n' click adventure game developed by AdventureSoft, formerly HorrorSoft of WaxWorks and Elvira fame. The game follows Simon, a British teenager thrust into a cynical fantasy world full of problems to solve and evil to defeat. Begrudgingly, Simon takes on the task of fighting Sordid and rescuing the good wizard Calypso from his clutches. On the way he'll meet a lonely swampling, helpful barbarians, familiar twists on fairytale classics, and he'll even face an assault on his wallet from a group of wizards who've found a way to monetise magic.

There's no way "finding wizards at the pub to learn wizardry by collecting stuff for them" was lifted straight from Monkey Island 1... nope, no way at all...

Absolutely. Everytime I leave the town and enter the forest for the first time and the music switches, I see the leaves, trees and squires walk around, help out a giant from a pin in his foot etc. I get enchanted.

Ever since I was a kid, the Forest theme plays in my head everytime I'm walking through one, without fail.
On a side note, I always found it weird how the Simon 1 boxart has Simon 2 Sordid on it, but Simon 2's boxart has Simon 1 Sordid on it

This game is phenomenal. I personally think you undersold how good it is. All the way from jokes to the gameplay. You moan about how long the cutscenes are but it was ace as it meant there were less loading screens between. This will always be nostalgic for me.

Okay, I kinda like that the whole “become a wizard” objective doesn’t get any real progress until halfway through the video. Knowing how these games are, there’s something I like about what seems like an early starting objective actually being one of the last ones you complete.

I actually grew up with Red Dwarf too, despite being American. And by “grew up with it”, I mean grew up around it and watched it properly when I was a bit older. Short version: parents found it late one night and recorded on a whim, which sent my older brother down the Dwarf rabbit hole.

    Awful memories time summarized:
    - Was a kid in the 90s.
    - Tried Simon the Sorcerer on a multi-game CD.
    - It was password protected.
    - Spent the whole morning trying to crack password.
    - Password Status: Cracked
    - Intro of the game cutscene: (played)
    - Lunch status: "Arriving so go tf to eat!"
    - Lunch status: "Finished!"
    - My stepdad: "Aight, Imma log out of this game my kid is playing so I can work!"
    - My reaction: YOU DID WHAAAAT? I WAS WORKING ON THAT!
    - Password: Still needs cracking.
    - Me: F this 💩 Im out!

I loved this game as a kid, still loving it now. 2 is... a mixed bag. I think Simon's character arc is that of getting worse as time goes on. I would however be curious as to how the sequels beyond 3 go, like 4 and such. Never been able to get them to work, so just knowing what happens would be interesting, let alone what puzzles and jokes it contains...

20:33 Fun fact. I actually used this solution to break back into my house once when I was locked out. The back door was an old one and there was enough space to get the key out under the door once I'd jiggled it out of the keyhole. Another fun fact is that doing this can damage the lock and I ended up having to replace it soon after.

Oh my god, you just unlocked so much memories of playing this game as a kid. I played it so much; the music is ingrained into me, and I just loved the humour, even if my version had no voice-acting. ...and came on nine floppy disks. ...with labels written in marker.
I'm... starting to realise that the games my mum got me _may_ have been cracked versions.
_...ahem,_ well, decades-old shadiness aside, thank you for allowing me to finally hear a sample of the voice-acting. Shame, my mum loved Red Dwarf and Chris Barrie in particular; I think she would've liked to have heard more voice clips of him.

To this day Simon the Sorcerer 1 & 2 are some of my favorite games. I still go back to replay them every now and then. The countryside fantasy environment of the first game feels so relaxing to explore while the comedy in the second game always has me laughing. It's just a shame to see how the series deteriorated from there. I am looking forward to playing the new prequel game when that is released. The art style is drastically different but the developers seem to have a love for the game, so hopefully it will return some more fun to the series.

When this game came out I was 7 years old and it was so amazing. Simon 1 and 2 in my opinion have the greatest pixel art of all time. As I got older my opinion of the series changed and I decided that the first game is by far the best, because while it is humourous, it takes its world and story seriously, and therefore is a fantasy world that you can become immersed in. 2 and 3 descended into lame satire, and are therefore just not as captivating to me as an adult. And they are also quite mean spirited. But I still love them (even 3, somehow).

I still have flashbacks to pixel hunting pebbles. There's like four grey-green pebbles hidden on the ground which you need to find, all of which are extremely well hidden and not telegraphed in any way. I completely missed the hint pebble in front of the dwarf cave, because why would I think to look there? Turns out that password can be brute-forced, though... I do feel like the game is pretty solid but could be dramatically improved simply by having all the characters speak 50% faster.

Whenever you showed inside shots of the Drunken Druid I found myself staring intently at the matchbox on top of the slot machine...
Decades later, I still think of THAT matchbox as the most cursed item in the entire game i.e the one item that took me days and days of strenuous searching before I finally spied that tiny collection of pixels on the far left of the screen!

"Ped-" does mean relating to feet; look at words like pedestrian, pedestal, pedal... So you can see where they get it from. ("Pod-" of course means the same thing, in words like podiatry, etc.) This being an English game, it's "pæd-" that means relating to children (in words like pædiatrics, encylopædia, etc.), so it definitely wouldn't mean that (they'd have written pædophobe for scared of children).
