The Spy Putty is a reference to Silly Putty; a kid’s toy that was somewhat popular at the time. One of the things you could do with Silly Putty was to smoosh it up against newspaper. When you peeled it off, some of the ink would come away with it, leaving a faded copy of the printing, without tearing the newspaper itself. The gadget here is that idea, but more sci-fi
He didn't, but he is referenced in the sequel. It turns out he's an avid figure skater as well as a card shark, because one of the trophies in the ice rink was awarded to him for skating and playing Go Fish at the same time.
Until now I never knew this game was randomised, so whenever I saw a video of this game I got confused because I didn't recognise a lot of the parts from my one playthrough as a kid. Very neat revelation.
I love humongous entertainment so much. They made the best games for kids. The best part is they came in a the school magazine so I was able to a videogame that was fun and educational which is hard to do.
I played this as a kid and legitimately didn't know that you could click on the truck until right now. I was always so confused about the screenshots on the back of the box that had you in Billy the Kidd's airship and I always just assumed it was another path I hadn't gotten to yet.
Even though this wasn't one of the HE games I had as a kid the wave of nostalgia was still powerful. I loved these games as a kid and am so excited to have seen you give them shot this past year. Also, Walter in the American version is meant to sound like Walter Cronkite, a famous news anchor, which the British dub also skipped it seems.
When I first discovered the Humongous games (or well, someone I knew showed them to me), I was already a LITTLE too old for most of them. However, I find that Spy Fox is the only one of the bunch that's actually still pretty damn entertaining, even as an adult. I guess it's because it's the only game where you don't play as a baby character? I don't know, the gameplay is for babies, but Spy Fox is still good clean fun if you ask me.
In the US dub Beau Bear is voiced by Kathy Levin who is most known as the HEV Suit voice in the Half Life franchise. Also Mike Shapiro is the voice of the iconic G-Man from the same series. John Patrick Lowrie the voice of the Sniper from TF2. Scott Burns is a former voice of Bowser.
Quite a number of the UK cast members have had a few notable showings too. Walter Wireless is voiced by Peter Hudson, who comes back in the fourth Syberia game as Reinhard Berger. Paul Bandey, voice of Professor Quack, has a recurring role as Obelix in the Asterisk XXL games. And David Gasman? Voice of Hong Kong Doodle? Why, THAT'S LITERALLY RAYMAN!
"Humor is very pun worthy" Just like the first Lego Island. Even the characters in that game are named after puns relating to computers, Lego or possibly other things.
TFW I realize I was playing the UK dub version the whole time. I live in America and I think I got my copy from Menards. They used to carry computer games years ago (the early 2000s) when I was a kid. But seriously I played this with the British voices. I don't recall the American ones. I think that's why I was put off at the voice difference in my copy of "Poodle Galore." I had an original game disk too. Still got it in a case full of other computer games. My Poodle Galore copy came in one of those colored "Kids Power: Fun for X" game disc packs.
As an American who grew up with this game, it's so weird to hear these lines that have been seared into my brain since childhood delivered by different actors. Pretty neat, but almost uncanny.
I feel bad that my knowledge and exposure to Spy Fox is so much more limited compared to Freddie, PuttPutt, and even Fatty Bear. He's so cheesy, but charming, and I love him for that. Great episode.
This was one of the presents I received when I turned 9, and I still have the CD to this day. The US dub is still engrained in my head and I'll always cherish the Max Smart-esque dub Spy Fox had there.
One line from this game lives rent free in my head my entire life: When interacting with the weasel guarding the yacht. Spyfox: Excuse me, X.Y.Z, I.C.U.P. Doorman: Nice try, but you may have noticed, I'm not wearing any pants.
The start have also a differnt thing for each playthrough: the item that makes Spy Fox a safe landing since it's not always the whoopie cushion that will save him from smashing into the ground but different objects altogheter.
Man I played the SHIT out of this game back in the day! Back in 2002 it was one of a few games you could get when buying Kellogs cereal, at least here in Germany. Great video as always!
This game had the concept of throwing a squishy thing onto the ground instead of a parachute YEARS before Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. That's all I got. Happy comment.
I play the third one ozone layer with the poodle that was fun but don't remember too much the second one I never play never owned But I constantly played the demo
My favorite point and click game ever is Blazing Dragons. If you’ve never played it then hot dog are you missing out. It stars the voices of Terry Jones and Cheech Marin. It’s got that Monty Python humor as well.
I don't get to say this that often This was my My childhood that's pajamas sam freddy fish I'd love those games I wish they would put them on the Video game consoles Like xbox and playstation for a new generation awesome!
Spy Fox was the main Humongous game I played as a kid. Nice to finally see a retrospective that goes fully in depth with all the paths and jokes. I can't quite remember what the watch's Fun button does, though...
I really enjoyed this video, I didn't know this game but I've always thought kid's games from the 90's are an interesting niche that nobody really cares about, which is sad, because there's great titles full of creativity and fun. As a kid I loved Hokus Pokus Pink (it was my first videogame if I remember right, in fact) and others, like the Math Blaster series (which I played it whit my even more little cousin) or The Great Green Mouse Disaster. I'd love to see you talk more about this niche!
I feel like you've got a good excuse for not checking out Humongous Entertainment. I grew up as the primary audience and still ended up not playing them until I was in college! But yeah, there's something distinctly charming about them. I maintain hope that somehow we may get a return to some of these series or even a brand new character to celebrate an HE revival of sorts.
Looking forward to the sequels. The publishers always made some decent edutanement with actual spirit. I don't think any educational games from other publishers like Nintendo or Sega ever came close to this level of charm and spirit. I do recall some of the Pink Panther adventure games came close.
It's funny, I never played a Humongous game, and never even knew about the company before I was an adult watching youtube and saw a lot of youtubers reviewing these. When I was a kid, I was playing Escape from Monkey Island, Siberia II, and Forestia which are... honestly complicated games now that I think of it.
Interestingly! The US dub has a knockoff of Bill Clinton as the President (instead of prime minister) and a different coin for the spy trap with US markings! That they went so far for a UK dub is kind of amazing
Turns out the AB Groupe involved in the UK dub have been in quite a number of projects, many of them point and clicks, including the Freddie Fish games.
@@Saxdude26 well seeing as that’s the same studio, that’s not too surprising, humongous pretty much invented the point and click edutainment game industry.

Also, Gilbert sounds like Woody Allen, Bigpig sounds like Blofeld, and instead of the Prime Minister at the end, it's the US President, who, of course, sounds like Bill Clinton.
Go fish sir! For my nostalgia! I loved the Pajama Sam games - I never got onto Spy Fox even though my parents pointed out I was in the game's recommended age bracket (12 years and up, I think? Gosh, I can barely really remember now). It definitely shows that Spy Fox is targeted towards older children, even though there's the references for the adults in there. Kinda tempted to pick it up myself, in the future. (Also seeing my username in the Twitch is the equivalent of 'look mum, I'm on TV!' that never changes! XD)
This is going to sound strange. I never played any of these games, freddi fish, pajama sam; puttputt. But I am incredibly nostalgic of them regardless thanks to Ian (brutal moose) thanks for the blast from the past!

What a huge mistake on the UK dub team and the actor doing William the Kid's UK voice!

Finally, The return of Scarf's old enemy: Go Fish
Yo, Scarf's videos have been on point recently, thanks for uploading these Scarf.
imagine if Bigpig came back as a villain at one point, then you could get revenge for having to do his goddamn Go Fish minigame.

i also like that Spy Fox likes to keep that stance as much as possible. an agent must always look his best.
I wish more P&CA games took more interest in replay value. Even a few puzzle variations would be a nice surprise.
I loved this game as a kid.
Had no idea the dub was different in the UK though, that's definitely throwing me through a loop in this video
That's now FOUR series I know of which has a voice change between US and UK. The other three being Gex2/3, Ape Escape, and Kirby's Epic Yarn.

14:07 sometimes divers are known as frogmen
This is great, I gotta look out for more of these. I definitely appreciate the Sam and Max background music, very fitting.
Btw the way the frog diving suit is most likely a reference to naval divers being called 'Frogmen'.
