Honestly, as someone who doesn't enjoy playing point 'n' click adventures, as the control style and other hallmarks of the genre aren't really my thing, this is a great video. It gives a wonderfully in-depth overview of the game, its story, and lets me experience it with actually engaging and entertaining commentary beyond what most let's plays of the game would provide. Thanks for the great video, Scarf!
An added bonus fact about the Monkey island cannibals - in the old Amiga 500 version, when you give them the small wimpy idol, Lemonhead has extended dialogue, saying "ooh, that's nice. This was fantastic, a wonderful review of one of my favourite games of all time. The RUclips algorithm suggested this to me after I saw a different video about the Monkey Island games, and long before the end of this one I had decided you had earned my subscription, as I now want to see what else you publish. Great work!
I really appreciate this video, not merely because your love of the Monkey Island series is apparent, but all adventure games. Your use of music from Sierra games like Gabriel Knight and King's Quest was a nice touch.
5:30 I did pretty much the same transition to the title drop in my analysis :) It's hard not to! ^_^ But seriously dude, that's a mighty fine video you've crafted! Better than Ahoy's, if I do say so myself - his was more of an adventure genre retrospective (as in - of the whole genre), but yours was, like, an actual (and great!) retrospective of SoMI. The idea of integrating the voice over from the special edition doesn't sit well with me, though... In my video I go quite a bit in-depth as to why the written format of dialogue in SoMI works so well, especially with the game's style of humor (for example the dog conversation becomes completely ruined with a voice over). It's basically a dialogue format that is completely unique to that type of game, merging formats of written play and film. Having voice over merely turns the game into a cartoon with subtitles, aka, into something generic, rather than something one-of-a-kind, like the original voiceless dialogue format.
Thanks for the kind words! As for thoughts on Talkie SoMI, yeah I could see that. I first experienced this game with the Special Edition personally, so that's just how I've always known the game. I can definitely understand what you're saying though, and it's interesting to hear other perspectives!
Really enjoyed this! Laughed so hard when you had Caramelldansen playing to the sight of Guybrush passed out on the Sea Monkey; as far as I’m concerned that’s canon now.
Superb video 👏 you have done the game proud and definitely spoke from the heart. I cannot express what this game means to me but watching this truly brings back all the glorious memories. I also enjoyed the special additions but think they completely messed up with Stans voice. Before the voice overs I imagined Stan to talk very fast in keeping with his insane arm movements so to hear him speak so slowly was out in my opinion. The rest of the voice cast was perfect (almost - like you said the cannibals not so much) awesome vid though - on to the next - can’t wait to see what you say about “that” ending 👍
This is such a fun game, just my type of humour. Your own style of comedy really fits too. Great review. It was also really weird hearing that party music on the ship. Since I'm a swede, caught me a bit off guard.
The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition was my intro to the series, but looking back at it and the very Uncanny Valley nature of the new graphics... Yeah, I'm doing the CD Talkie version next time I do a new game. Thanks for the recommendation.
I am a sucker for any in depth content of Monkey Island series. And the love for the series goes a long way for me. Back in the very early 90s I used to sneak into my big brothers room when he was away to play on our 386 located in his room. I didn't really know which games he owned so I just picked up something and tried to play them. Most games were ran straight from floppies as hard drive space was scarse. We were subscribed to a computer magazine which had game reviews, hints and walkthroughs alongside ads, software and hardware reviews. I had read the issue from 1990 which had the review for this game and I was left in awe. And when I noticed by brother had a copy of the said game, the early EGA version - I used all the time I could playing it. Being a finnish boy who just had started to learn english at school I had to keep a dictionary nearby as the EGA version had the verbs and inventory written in text. Translating all the dialogue, swordfighting was just trial and error and writing down the right answers.. But I could say that Monkey Island series played a big role for perfecting my english and also made me so enthuasist about it at school. A few years later I got my hands on a copy of LeChuck's Revenge which was just all that I had learned to love but more. And ever since I've played through every one of the games released and I have liked them all. There is just something really captivating for me about the stories told of the Tri Island area. I just can't get enough and would like to always see more. Every time they seem to have the same charm as they did for the 9 year old me. I eventually finished that said playthrough of the EGA version of TSoMI done in secret and that experience which took forever to complete is something that changed the way I see games for good.
Dude, I don't even have any jokes or witty comments, this was just an amazing look at Monkey Island. You can definitely feel every bit of love for the series that went into this, and if this is a sign of what's to come with this series I really can't wait to see the rest. Keep up the great work!
I just finished playing the Special Edition of Monkey Island for the first time and I loved it! Since your video inspired me to play it, I want to thank you.
I haven't played a single Monkey Island game (even though I would really like to) but I just love listening to people talking about stuff they are passionate about. It's always fun even if I don't know what they are talking about :D I really enjoyed this video over a nice cup of coffee ☕
I'm very late to the party as this is the first video I have actually watched on what is for me a newly discovered channel but, if the quality of this is anything to go by, it certainly won't be the last. This was really well done, thank you for making it.
Nice point for point mention of all the best jokes in the game, with the context behind them. And having played all the games myself, I see the seeds you're planting for future episodes.
Wow, was that Caddicarus video really back in 2013? I’ve been following you since that video came out, and I’ve loved seeing how your style has changed and evolved. I’m just as happy to see you upload now as I was when I was ten. I’m turning eighteen in a few days, so I guess you could say I’ve kind of grown up with your videos! You’ve been a treat to watch the entire time, thank you so much for all you’ve done.
As someone who got into adventure games in 2010, and started out with the special edition of the first game, this was quite relatable on so may levels! Can't wait for the next video!
Loved what you had to say here. Curse was my first and is my favourite, but I have a lot of love for this one too. It shaped the entire genre for years to come! Such a fantastic series. I need to play this game again... On to your Monkey Island 2 video!
Thank you so much for making this video! I absolutely love the early games in the Monkey Island series and they were an important part of my childhood. I look forward to your next videos about the series.
Oh wow, Freddie was the inspiration for Threepwood? I get that reference; one of my mates binged the Blandings series with me. I think it's fair to say this game was the bread and butter Connor has been working towards this whole time. I am STOKED! I am EXCITED! I am STRAPPED IN, so let's go!
Fantastic video! Especially loved the extra touch with the credits As a side note, Escape from Monkey Island was how I was introduced to the series. I didn't see or play the originals until years later.
17:30 A recurring theme in the Monkey Island series, that someone pointed out, is figuring out what constitutes an acceptable substitute for something you need but don't have. For example, a pot as a helmet.
This is easily one of, if not the best video you've made. Love the editing and the jokes and you had genuinely great commentary. Super excited for the later parts (especially Curse of Monkey Island!). I think the only thing I'd like to see in the later videos is less "explaining the plot/puzzles in order" and more discussing the creation of the game, the impact, your thoughts and history, etc. - more personal stuff, really. There was a lot of that in this video already and those were definitely my favorite bits (though in fairness most of your best jokes came from the "explaining the plot/puzzles" parts)
Hot damn, this might be the best video you've made! I can't wait for the next Monkey Island Retrospective! And now I want you to do almost all the other LucasArts point and clicks, including Full Throttle, my favorite!
I've been aware of the Secret of Monkey Island's existence for at least 20 years, but I only got to play it for the first time earlier this year. And now, whenever I hear the main theme, I get chills. No nostalgia speaking here. The game is just that good. It's not even my personal favorite of the LucasArts adventure games (Sam & Max Hit the Road, which I also played for the first time this year, holds that place), but as far as I can tell it is the best. It's THE genre-defining point and click game, in my opinion. An absolute masterpiece. I'm still hoping for a Switch port to come out so I can play it on the go.
Deeply enjoyed this, rediscovered your channel recently from the Forgive Me Father review and I'm going back through all the old vids. Definitely gonna subscribe once I've finished my little marathon
Fantastic video, Scarf, welcome back! I cannot wait to see you tackle Monkey Island 2! Also, very cheeky, telling everyone what the secret of Monkey Island is. He's lying, by the way, the secret actually is
Now that was certainly worth the wait! It's always nice to see you talk about something you're very passionate about. And I won't lie, I had a smile on my face the entire time - both your jokes and the jokes from the game worked well together! (I especially loved Stan's sale pitch.)
Great work on the video! I played this game a lot as a kid, but never got past part 1. I finally bought the game for myself and finally beat it. It’s still good ☺️ thank you!
This was a truly wonderful video of a wonderful classic Point & Click adventure game! I don't think I could do nearly enough justice to The Secret of Monkey Island at a similar level even if I tried! I'm looking forward to similar, deeper dive-in videos of LeChuck's Revenge and The Curse of Monkey Island as well as other adventure games as well. You're really inspiring me to continue making more of my own 'My Thoughts On'-videos. While not as long or in depth as this one, they're fun to make. I also discovered a whole new passion for adventure games, partly thanks to you. :)
11:26 - Indoor Aggression from Pathologic ♥ Edit: Oh, nevermind! So many tracks from the Original Pathologic.. Nice! It's insane to recognize them all.
My older brother had this game in the nineties. I also played it back then but at the time I was too young and never finished it. But some years later I bought it for myself when MI3 came out. Both, MI1 and MI2 were also included in the package I bought. And then I finally was able to finish Monkey Island 1 and the following games. Later I also played MI4 and 5. I'm not a big fan of MI4 for obvious reasons but the other parts are just great! I still love it and replayed it again when the Special Edition came out. I just love the music and art and the humour.
If you try and give the cannibals the bananas you get some unique dialogue explaining why: “You think we want that after you’ve got your grubby mitts all over it?”
Here I am, at 1am, enjoying some really good Monkey Island content. Thank you. I think I'll watch your next video tomorrow night. I really need some sleep now. 😃
This took me a while to watch however I am glad I finally got around to it. This was a fantastic look at a game I've heard a lot about yet barely anything. Sure I've heard it's a good game but not a lot besides people sing it's praise. Thanks for doing this in depth look at the game. I look forward to the rest of this retrospective. Great work man :D
As a kid I found the area beneath the monkey head pretty damn creepy. I played this game when I was 3 or 4. Loved the atmosphere of the game - and Monkey 2 even more, looking forward to that one!
Love this! Great video. Played through the original trilogy over the past few weeks, tend to revisit every 8 years or so having started on my brother's floppy disks in the 90s. This time through was definitely the most I've enjoyed Curse. Launched escape this afternoon and had immediate regrets.. it's SO clunky, hasn't aged well at all..
Amazing video Connor! I love the in-depth analysis you went it to, really looking forward to other videos in the series. I watched you a lot couple of years earlier, but my subbox was broken I guess, glad to see you upload more videos again! Yarr!
1:05:15 One of my favorite things about the CD 2-game release was that you could (and would constantly) put it into a CD player and listen to both soundtracks. SCUMM Bar was track 1!
I first played the CGA version back in the early 90s, got stuck on the ship because the CGA graphics were so low res and grainy I couldn't actually read the list of ingredients on the recipe. Actually bought a hint book to get by that puzzle! Still had the pristine original box box versions of MI1 & 2 (and Doom, Doom 2, et al) until I foolishly threw it all in the garbage when cleaning house about 15 years ago - Today it still hurts to even think about it.
I don’t have access to the special edition but thank you for telling me about the ultimate talkie patch! It looks amazing and when I can get a copy I’ll totally install it. Until then I’m gonna use a voice patched version of the original running in SCUMMVM since it seems to be my best option rn.

The RUclips algorithm suggested this to me after I saw a different video about the Monkey Island games, and long before the end of this one I had decided you had earned my subscription, as I now want to see what else you publish. Great work!
With the recent news of a new Monkey Island coming 2022, this was a nice treat. Thank you.
I really appreciate this video, not merely because your love of the Monkey Island series is apparent, but all adventure games. Your use of music from Sierra games like Gabriel Knight and King's Quest was a nice touch.
54:27 That wasted opportunity to play Titanic on Kazoo
5:30 I did pretty much the same transition to the title drop in my analysis :) It's hard not to! ^_^
But seriously dude, that's a mighty fine video you've crafted!
I don't care for the voice over, either.
What a load of bollocks. The voice over is fantastic. Stop being a retro elitist.
Really enjoyed this! Laughed so hard when you had Caramelldansen playing to the sight of Guybrush passed out on the Sea Monkey; as far as I’m concerned that’s canon now.
Was lowkey expecting it to cut back to Connor and him just say, straightfaced, "No" (as... as if we expected him to dance)
ALWAYS happy to see more of your content!!
This was a fantastic first video for the retrospective, I'm really looking forward to the next one!
I haven't played a single Monkey Island game (even though I would really like to) but I just love listening to people talking about stuff they are passionate about. It's always fun even if I don't know what they are talking about :D
I really enjoyed this video over a nice cup of coffee ☕
I'm very late to the party as this is the first video I have actually watched on what is for me a newly discovered channel but, if the quality of this is anything to go by, it certainly won't be the last. This was really well done, thank you for making it.
What a loving tribute to this great game.
I recently discovered your channel through the dracula series, glad you're still making content! Keep it up!
1:13:51 wisest words ever said, in video games or anything ever.
Interesting to see have you done something of this length. Solid work on it. 👍
This was a fun, cozy walkthrough the game. Reminded me why I love it so much. Hope you do more of these for the sequels or even other LucasArts games!
You have no idea how long I've waited for you to cover this series. Looking forward to Part 2!
This is the first video I've seen on your channel. Very much enjoyed it! Subscribed!
Fantastic video! Especially loved the extra touch with the credits
As a side note, Escape from Monkey Island was how I was introduced to the series.
I'm gonna work on that for the next one for sure. See if I can strike a stronger balance of the two.
He's lying, by the way, the secret actually is
I almost finished playing through all of the Monkey Island games, so great timing!
What a treat, watched to the end. Good to see you're "back"
I played thru this whole series over on my channel by the by. Love your review content, freaking amazing.
I discovered the ultimate talkie edition very recently... It's what I've wanted since Curse of Monkey Island was released. Absolutely fantastic.
I was just wondering why you hadn't posted in a while. I'm not disappointed
Fuck yeah! Monkey island, game analysis, and one of my favorite old youtubers. This is going to be a good hour
11:11 Grab his what now??
Also this is hands down my favourite video on SMI out there, Gilbert himself would be pleased with this one
You just earned a sub mate. I grew up playing all the sierra and LucasArts games when I was 6 in the 80's.
11:26 - Indoor Aggression from Pathologic ♥
Edit: Oh, nevermind! So many tracks from the Original Pathologic.. Nice! It's insane to recognize them all.
what an incredible classic, the first adventure game I ever played and followed up to escape from monkey island
great times
It's good to have you back, man.
Here I am, at 1am, enjoying some really good Monkey Island content. Thank you. I think I'll watch your next video tomorrow night. I really need some sleep now. 😃
Glad you're enjoying this! Sleep well!
Brilliant video. Monkey island is my alltime favourite game and your video was aboslutely amazing.
This? This was so worth the wait. Nicely done.
My man Scarfulhu popping off
God yes. Thank you for that. Now I have to marathon the whole series again
Bravo my dude, we definitely need more LucasArts coverage to expose them and keep these masterpieces alive.
SCARF
The king is back, baby. The king is back
So glad to see you back! Great work!
As a kid I found the area beneath the monkey head pretty damn creepy. I played this game when I was 3 or 4. Loved the atmosphere of the game - and Monkey 2 even more, looking forward to that one!
Oh my gosh this has been a long time coming! Very nice work my dude, this is super entertaining

You sound like you come from the same area I do.
Combined with the Monkey Island nostalgia it's very comforting. Damn good video.
You sir just got yourself a new follower, great video that pays respect to one of the greats
Amazing video Connor! I love the in-depth analysis you went it to, really looking forward to other videos in the series. I watched you a lot couple of years earlier, but my subbox was broken I guess, glad to see you upload more videos again! Yarr!
I learned tons of English while playing this video game as a kid! One of my favorites! And Space Quest II: Vahul's Revenge!
Never spend more than 20 bucks on a computer game.
Words to live by.
I feel like Steam was made on that statement
I’ve always loved this game. I didn’t realise what an impact it had until my driving instructor started whistling LeChuck’s theme
1:05:15 One of my favorite things about the CD 2-game release was that you could (and would constantly) put it into a CD player and listen to both soundtracks. SCUMM Bar was track 1!
Great video!!! Looking forward to Monkey Island 2!!!
This was a fantastic retrospective on monkey island yo!
Thank you!
A new Scarfulhu video AND it's about one of the greatest games to grace the PC? Well polish my trophy and call me Mr Trophy Owner!
This is ironically the only thing that helps my sleep at night
One of my most memorable vdeo game experiences as a kid.
