Correction about the 451 code. It was the code that the Looking Glass employees used to get to their office's. The Fahrenheit 451 allusion is a myth, just propagated by people sharing false information. I thank this video from mandalore for teaching me this info: ruclips.net/video/OnOd7srBk-g/видео.html
It's kinda funny how Sanitarium's storytelling, realm traveling and presentation saw influence in a number of more recent adventure games like Fran Bow, which I would like to see you cover one day, and even the Stranger Things inspired Stories Untold (which just got ported to consoles this week after being on PC for three years). I wouldn't mind seeing a full blown survival horror game take a deep dive into the themes and storytelling Sanitarium and its spiritual successors tackle, and not just have levels in hospitals and asylums like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Outlast and their respective contemporaries.
The scene where Max reunites with Sarah, his sister, always made me emotional because I always interpreted the scene of her asking for her toy and knowingly distracting Max. She didn't want her older brother, whom probably assumed a protective role in their relationship-- especially when she fell ill, to watch her die in front of his eyes so she asked him to get her her favorite clown doll because she knew she might distract him long enough for her to pass away without having to watch it (and he realizes this has happened when he sees her arm fall limp). Of course the world isn't perfect, so in distracting her brother with finding the doll, it ends up giving Max this guilt complex because he failed to do the one task she asked of him-- a sort of dying wish. And since this game takes a more realistic/authentic approach to loss, grief, depression, etc... it's possible that Max held a bit of irrational guilt over not finding the doll in time, and thinking if he had, it would've kept Sarah alive a little longer. (This is a pretty common thought process for anyone dealing with a dying loved one. You sometimes think, or hope, that as long as you don't say goodbye, or as long as you don't deal with the process of grief, or find the thing your loved one is asking for-- whatever the case may be, that the person won't die or that this will keep them alive a little longer. Of course this isn't true as we will all die one day, but there's always that little irrational part of your brain that you use to try to convince yourself that this is true.)
You know, I can’t remember ever commenting on any of your videos before. But you’ve helped me through some hard times, and I just wanted to say thank you.
Tbh in some cases the ending twist would make eyes roll, but the fact that it is executed well and it all comes together to create an overall pretty satisfying ending is what makes it so great I believe.

For the 451 combination, it really started with System Shock and wasnt actually a reference to the book. The combination used at Origin to get into their offices was "451" so they added it in as a little reference to themselves.
A little detail I always loved in this game is that in the first chapter, the name of the small town is "Genet." In plant ecology, a Genet is a clonal colony of genetically identical species. It's a small touch, but I think it's really neat considering the plot of that chapter.
I remember watching your vids back in 2013, I can't believe how much time has passed, you used to make me and my brother laugh uncontrollably, and I just wanted to say thank you for all memories you gave me.
I first learned of this game years ago from the RUclipsr named PushingUpRoses. Also lookup the complete playthrough of this game from the channel Adventuregamefan8.

Thanks scarfy!! Im a little salty you didnt show the throwing a stone at the church bell puzzle. I got really stuck
I honestly forgot all about this game. Never played it myself, but I’ve heard about it enough. It’s incredibly interesting. Please do talk about Fran Bow.
I know that was a joke, but man, the 'are you alright?' just makes me smile. And as someone who doesn't care, I am, I just want to experience the story of these great games that I feel my ape-brain would have more trouble with, and wind up not enjoying the story, or even catching half of it.
OMG! I remember my Dad buying this back in 98 when I was like 3 years old. Years later he gave me this game plus a bunch of other old point and click game and said if you can get them to work, you can have them. He had games like Nocturne, John Saul's Blackstone Chronicles, Phantasmagoria, Dracula Resurrection and Sanctuary. He also had X-Files the game and a Game called Wax Works The latter ran on floppy disks and was kind of gruesome at times.. Good Memories Though😈
Oh my god, I had a brief burst of nostalgia seeing that 101 Dalmatians point and click. I played the hell out of that game as a kid- I had no idea the developers of that game made this as well!
Maybe it's just because I love 'Sanitarium' - definitely an underrated gem - but I really loved this format of an extended video analyzing the entirety of the game as opposed to the usual 10-15 minute "funny review" most RUclipsrs do. Admittedly, I fell out of the Scarfulhu loop for about a year, but I'm totally down for more videos in this vein, *especially* 'Harvester', and 'Fran Bow' would be pretty cool, too. I'm just glad that there are channels still dedicated to adventure game content!
I thought the grainy-ness of the video was a cool effect, it kinda reminded me of the horror games Phantasmagoria and Night trap! Can't wait for the next video they're always a surprise on my feed when they pop up!!
Damn... I actually suppressed that scene you're discussing at 19:00 mark from my memory, exactly for the reasons you've described. And to make it even worse, this entire thing also reminded me of a dream (or should I say a nightmare) I had just today, and which I already blissfully forgot... until it came back with vengeance after watching the clip of Max failing to find a toy and listening to you explaining its emotional weight. What were the odds...
I have 10 minutes left, so maybe you mentioned it at some point, but Lenny in the first chapter is also foreshadowing the later chapters. He says he did a bad thing by eating some pumpkin pie that came from "the patch", and that his mommy made everyone go away to school. Great video!
For me this game has always been one of those games where the...I don't wanna say BAD so I'll say "unconventional" voice acting actually works in its favor, as it's just another aspect of what adds to the creepy and unsettling atmosphere. Another great instance is Silent Hill 3. That reading of "They look like monsters to you?" will haunt me for the rest of my life. Anyway, I just wanted to say absolutely fantastic job on this one, dude! As a fellow lover of Halloween, I always look forward to the stuff you tackle this time of year. Great jokes, absolutely wonderful attention to detail on the story and themes of the game. Just an awesome video from start to finish!
This game really is the quintessential cult classic video game: it is super creative, really artsy, has some super stupid gameplay decisions that make it a drudge at times, a weaker second half that still has a good finale, and combines a lots of things you would not expect. I'll have to get this on GOG, thanks for showing it to us.
I bought this game on GOG a couple months ago, because I saw the video PushingUpRoses did on it, and I liked the game's premise. It's so interesting, and lends itself so well to the point and click adventure game format, more than any other game genre I think. At the same time, struggling with post-cancer depression I just haven't had the courage to play it properly, all the way through, for fear that it'll make me feel things I really don't want to feel. To me, this game definitely doesn't feel like a horror game so much as a game about mental health. Depending on your state of mind, things that can feel anywhere from slightly spooky to even humorous to some people (and may well have been intended as such), can project intense feelings of hopelessness into others. On the bright side, perhaps the fact that it is able to inspire such a wide spectrum of emotions in people is proof that video games truly are art (which I do believe they are), and I certainly don't hold any of this against this game. It's a game that's very good, but also one that some people, even fans of the genre, probably should not play. Thank you for the video. The long form documentary style suits you well.
Thank you for covering this man. I always heard people praise this game but never elaborate why it was so good. This was a fasinating dive into such a cult classic. I hope you had a wonderful halloween :)

Halloween specials are the best! :D I thought this looked familiar and then I realised it was because I watched PushingUpRoses' video on it 7 years ago. But I got to enjoy seeing it all over again as I'd basically forgotten everything other than "dude in bandages having a bad time" by that point. Thanks for the spooks!

As someone who was in a coma I appreciate this game more. Really weird shit can happen there and you can believe 100% it's real. My "dream" was almost as fucked up... well, basically exactly as fucked up. But it made little sense in comparison, even though my brain didn't realise that at that moment.
Love your videos. I haven't heard of this game in years. I watched my older siblings play it because I was a tiny creature. Can't play but could watch, because house rules made a lot of sense.
I remember trying to find this game back in the day just to find out that in France, a french catholic lobbying group ( Familles de France) succeded in banning it of sales. Too bad that it made it even more entertaining and precious
I've read the graininess of your cam's recording was an accident, but I think it looks great considering this is a Halloween vid. And also, it fits very well with the way the flashback cutscenes are made and look like. So yeah, not a bad accident, as far as I'm concerned. Also, Sanitarium is a great game, really. Each of the segments is unique and captivating. I feel the same vibes from it as from the game adaptation of "I have no mouth and I must scream". And well, I guess it fits the multiple characters theme too. Eternal Darkness has a bit of that too, but well, it's a very different kind of game so it doesn't feel the same. Another funny thing is the fact I've been recently watching the Children of the Corn movies for the first time, and well, hard not to think of the first chapter of Sanitarium when watching these. I'm sad you don't like Grimwall's chapter though. I think it's one of my favorites because of how alien it feels. And I actually like the character himself. Though I think Olmec is and will remain my favorite, and same goes for his chapter overall. And I'd love to hear your take on Fran Bow! Such a brilliant game!
"Mother" sounds like "Dorothy" from Galerians, same voice actress? Also very similar concept too, an omnipotent creature playing God at the expenses of children essentially.
You can't care about spoilers when you beat the game years ago. I have to say that the plot of the game is stellar, and I believed the facade the whole way through, which made the plot twist all the more impactful
So, if I understand the story correctly, all I need to do to deal with my past problems is to get into a car accident? Brb, going to drive backwards on a freeway. Obvious sarcasm aside, awesome video!
I watched this video before and just so happened to mention something about it to my brother, of course I didn’t remember the name of the game - cue spending an exorbitant amount of time trying to find the video again >~
Sanitarium is probably the reason why I liked Stasis and Beautiful Desolation so much... Isometric adventure games aren't really that common, are they?

My "dream" was almost as fucked up... well, basically exactly as fucked up. But it made little sense in comparison, even though my brain didn't realise that at that moment.
how did you end up comatose?
Love your videos. I haven't heard of this game in years. I watched my older siblings play it because I was a tiny creature. Can't play but could watch, because house rules made a lot of sense.
Brilliant game, great video. Thx a lot, cheers!
451 was the code to get into their office building where they made all those games
Offf seeing you play it was just as good as this review, Happy Halloween Scarf!
Just awesome!
YES... im SO glad someone ELSE knows about this... everyone i talk to never knows T_T
I would love to see you cover Franbow it is amazing how great it is.
You can't care about spoilers when you beat the game years ago. I have to say that the plot of the game is stellar, and I believed the facade the whole way through, which made the plot twist all the more impactful
How has Scarf not played the 101 Dalmatians game
Oh man I remember the twitch stream. Should be a fun one!
PS: post all your Metallica references here
I'd love to see a Fran Bow video
I would really like to see you talk about Fran Bow
Fran bow was a beautiful eerie game
Ok but the 101 Dalmatians game is actually really good.
I still don’t know if I like Sanitarium or not but it’s still a great experience!
25:33 shit you're onto me :^)
@25:36 No I am not.
So, if I understand the story correctly, all I need to do to deal with my past problems is to get into a car accident?
Brb, going to drive backwards on a freeway.
Obvious sarcasm aside, awesome video!
Yeeeeees franbow! Love that game.
I watched this video before and just so happened to mention something about it to my brother, of course I didn’t remember the name of the game - cue spending an exorbitant amount of time trying to find the video again >~
Yeah you need to talk about fran bow.
Sanitarium is probably the reason why I liked Stasis and Beautiful Desolation so much... Isometric adventure games aren't really that common, are they?
They're really not! The only other ones that come to mind for me are the Little Big Adventure games.

Baldurs Gate 1 credits... lol.
The thing I did this Halloween was finding out how to cross-compile my Program in Free Pascal.
Programming...
THE TRUE HORROR

Children of the corn 🌽. Dang that one was freaky.
Is that vtmb music i hear in the background
you could branch out to non-adventure games, cause there are some pretty good RPGmaker games I' love ya to look at :3
Holy shit Max sounds so much like Hank Hill.
