    If you enjoyed this video, please help share it on reddit, twitter, etc. so that more people can check it out (it helps a lot!) and be sure to check out my latest documentary on the history of Chris Sawyer (creator of Transport Tycoon, RollerCoaster Tycoon and Locomotion): ruclips.net/video/Q15Py17tiEA/видео.html
    Also, let me know which other game franchises you'd like to see documentaries on in the future.

      For some reason, I want a video of the Little Bronx Tale series! (Eg. Tail Concerto, and the Fuga games!)
      In case that doesn’t work out, I’ll be happy with a story about Double Fine Entertainment! (I LOVE their games! Their game Costume Quest was So nice, I bought it TWICE! No joke!)

      This might be outside of your comfort zone as it might not be as retro as the other documentaries. But I think a good franchise to take a look at on how it happened would be Demon's Souls, since this game pioneered a whole new sub-genre of souls-like games.
      Edit: Nvm, Matt McMuscles already did a What Happened video on it. So here's another suggestion, Team Ico's ICO, Shadow of Collosus and The Last Guardian. This is one of those cult franchise that secretly inspired the game industry in so many ways, things like Demon's Souls, God of War and The Last of Us.

      Not really it's just nostalgia. Every "era" whatever that actually means, has great games made by teams with passion and a love of the art and it's cheap slop rushed out purely to make money hell around the time of the early odd world games we had stuff like bubsy 3D the countless Barbie or Mary Kate and Ashley games or Crow city of angels etc just like today we have a lot of cash grabs but also a lot of passion projects like Fear and Hunger or signalis or even the soulsborne games when Fromsoft was still making kings field back during the time of the PS1 and 2. It's about the people behind the games regardless of when they were made garbage that is going to sell and make money is going to be abundant but there's still going to be plenty of people making games for the love of it putting out masterpieces and it'll be the same in a decade or 2 decades or more etc.

    I never liked how the series's art style became less and less realistic over time. By the time of New 'n' Tasty the rules created for the first games was all but forgotten.

    • @ReliableRhubarb
      @ReliableRhubarb  Год назад +23

      True, but at least with Soulstorm they've seemingly gone back to the series' roots, as it's visually a lot closer to earlier Oddworld titles (in terms of realism).

    • @Barakon
      @Barakon 5 месяцев назад +6

      @@ReliableRhubarbHowever, I like to count the colorfulness as the 1 exception because real life IS colorful, but realistic games often forget that fact.
      So that is why I didn’t like its art direction as much as the first 2 game, & it’s the opposite reason towards why I don’t like Munch’s Oddysee as much.
      It needs to find that fine balance between grimy & beautiful.
      To have that same awe inspiring shock you get from being in the woods.

    I'll never forget seeing the commercials for Oddworld and then getting the game for Christmas when I was like 8 or 9 years old. I continued to play that game into the early 2000s and then showed it to a few of my college friends around 2008 or so. Good memories.

    This game was so important to me as a kid, so memorable. I remember playing it a lot and, as we say in brazilliang portuguese, "zerando" (beating it) more than once. This game had such a great áurea around it that it's almost inexplicable. The mysterious, dark and ominous ambience; the violent, opressive and terryfing creatures/animals; the hope, fun and willpower to get Abe and it's race free. All that and much more was carved in my memory with such pleasure that I can't but feel a good nostalgia remembering it. Thank you very much for making this documentary, I'm really greatful for knowing more about it's creation and for being able to have experienced it!

    The two PS1 Oddworld titles were so formative for me. My friends and I would pass the controller around playing Oddyssee, trolling each other by stating a pit was an entrance to a secret level only to fall to our deaths and laugh it off. Exodduss was the game that I played over and over for months, playing again every couple years now. When Munch rolled around, I didn't have an xbox and so passed on it and Stranger, thinking that the series had gone too far away from what I loved in it. Fast-forward to 2023 after I bought a Switch and the first game I got was the Oddworld Collection, and I was so surprised with Munch and Stranger: these games are unreal with how compelling they are to play. I ended up getting Soulstorm because of this and I couldn't put it down. Oddworld is very special; thank you for this awesome video!

I hope we get more after Soulstorm.

    I remember being a little kid playing abes oddysee for the first time on my dad’s ps2 using the CRT tv they put in our room after they got a new flatscreen. I LOVED the game so much, and my twin sister and I would take turns playing it when we got stuck or died (and I remember vividly having to beg my dad to do the junkyard sections for us because we couldn’t for the life of us so the platforming and even he struggled a bit)
    Genuinely one of my favourite games I’ve played ever in my entire life. Horrifically hard for a 5 or 6 year old to be playing but funnily enough that die retry gameplay sparked a love for 2d platformers in me that has me adoring games like rayman when I was old enough to start asking for my own games, then eventually hollow knight, dead cells, and Celeste now. It’s one of the few games I actually remember playing often and loving (alongside super monkey ball deluxe)

    Watching this video just after getting 300 mudokons and the platinum trophy on ps4, really enjoying the doc.
    Then the story of Alf comes on...
    It's such a touching story, and absolutely fantastic to learn about...
    I lost my mom 3 days ago, and now my stepdad is alone. Though he never been in any war, or anything like that, but that story reminded me of him. He's a lorry driver, too, and she was his everything. She had been in poor health since 2020, and got worse and worse, but he visited her every single day, be it in the hospital or at the nursing home, and the staff almost always had to kick him out every day, as he never wanted to leave her side...
    Abe's Oddysee came out a short time after my mom lost her sister, and I remember reading about it in an issue of CVG, with a silver cover featuring Cloud Strife, while I was at a boarding school, and it drew me in. Later, my cousin lent me his psx with Abe's Oddysee, and I just fell for it hard... At the same time, a close friend had a gig as a reviewer, and he had just gotten Final Fantasy VII to review. Those two titles became a comfort for me, and still are to this day, and the weird coinsidence of starting and completing Exoddus right around the passing of my mom isnt lost on me.... So thank you for making this video, and I'm thinking about sending a letter as a thank you to the team, though it might be close to impossible in this day and age...

That's why they hate each other is that so clever. Just sounds like it would be offensive, and rightfully piss people off. Who were aware of the real life situation it's inspired by.

    The thing I don't like about the new ones is that it doesn't look as dark and dystopian as the originals. If I was to buy these again I think I would just buy the original ones on GOG instead of the remakes.

    Am I the only one that thinks the "New n Tasty" HD version looks worse than the original? Or rather, I prefer the original over the HD remake? Not in quality or resolution, but the atmosphere, artstyle, and atheistic feel better in the original version. The bloom and contrast of the HD remake is to bright, and the colors feel over saturated. The game was no longer dark, gritty, depressing and scary with its atmosphere. It's was turned into something bright, playful and cheery looking with a more cartoony style than realistic.. Something about the original just feels so much better.

      I found a simple solution was just lower the gamma to the left 5 times and if you wanna turn bloom off or some of the screen effects off they added that into the switch version

    Soulstorm is a massive flop. Oddworld is officially deceased. I cannot believe the same guy who had envisioned the original FMVs also greenlit LENS DIRT for his newest game, i CANNOT believe that sh*t.

    one thing you shouldn't do if you're trying to create a healthy work environment is confiscate people's food that they bring in themselves.
    I get she was well intentioned, but that's just mean and overbearing. She's not their mom.
