I've been obsessing over Oddworld my entire life and you've shown me new things I never knew! Love this video, hope you do more like it in the future, and if not, I'm still thankful for this one.
This was such an interesting watch. You were right, I could never pinpoint why any of the changes looked weird. Props to the glukks staying consistent through most of the series
One of the biggest shocks for me was realizing that I always though Abe's eyes were that little black dot on the model of the profile silhouette, when in reality they were far below.
The flying slig with wings can be heard exploding after complaining that something smells. The wings were likely an older (and less reliable) design in universe as well.
I'm not really a fan of the new designs, I think the gritty realistic look coupled with goofy proportions and slapstick dark humour of the original first 2 games meshed so well
Yush feel the same though I take as the new designs with a pinch of salt. But I lean towards the original designs and style more just has more charm and fantasy alien world vibe.
The new games didn’t capture that dark , depressed , hopeless, deadly atmosphere the Originals had . The cinematic art background they used in the originals can’t be matched .
This was absolutely amazing, I love Oddworld so much and the details you explored are fascinating. I commend you for your effort and the amount of time this video must have taken. Also I am glad you talked a bit about Green Suit Glukkon from Oddysee, he's always been my favorite.
I can't believe how much effort has been put into making this video and it doesn't have views while other stupid videos are having many views. Great video!
I've always loved that Gluckons are like a much taller guy cut off at the wait. It gives me Dark Crystal vibes, like they were a whole thing once and are incomplete somehow
Thank you for this fantastic video. The editing was insanely good! And I learned a bunch of new things about these games, which I've played and replayed for like 20 years!
Absolutely incredible video. You obviously have a great deal of knowledge of how games and their art work under the hood and attention to detail, but you have the ability to convey the information to a layman very clearly. The editing, the script, the delivery, the insights... Terrific job!
What a spectacular video. Remarkably well put together. I really appreciate all of the effort that went into the graphic design elements, and the animations between parts. I've loved Oddysee and Exoddus since I was a kid, so I love seeing deep-dives like this for these games. Thanks for a cool video.
I've never played any of these games but I was genuinely interested the whole way through, great video! I'm now kinda interested in playing the games now
I am so glad you made this video, been thinking about the in depth inconsintincies in the back of mind for over 10 years and you have filled the gap in my mind 😂
Soul-storm is a refreshing take on the characters, I found it jarring at first, but Ive come to welcome the change, I hope to see more of these versions of Abe and the cast.
This game was so unusually dark for its time and I kind of love it. I would like to download an emulator and play it again from start to finish. It's super hard and really intricate which is surprising and I don't remember ever beating either the first or second game as I was a kid. Yeah it's great. I feel like Abe's creatures were an inspiration for the Vorrigaunts from the Half-Life series and Strangers Wrath is so good! 😂 Thanks for making the video and reminding me of a gem from my past
Just so people know, they changed the amount of fingers to 3 because in Japan, having 4 fingers meant you were a criminal. This was because in some Japanese gangs, members would cut off their pinky in order to pay penance to an offence made towards the group
That’s not right, why would they want to limit the visual of criminals when there’s so much media about Yakuza in anime? Gangs, violence, and criminality is basically a trope there. It was culturally motivated.
That's not true. They changed the four fingers due to the connotations it had with the Burakumin, a social caste that was ostracized and humiliated during centuries by Japanese society due to the fact that they worked as butchers, tanners or undertakers, which were considered impure jobs as they had to deal with blood. In Japan and China 4 is a bad luck number because it can be pronounced like "shi" (death) and in Japanese folklore only animals have four fingers, so saying that the Burakumin had four fingers was like saying that they were not humans.
Fantastic video, I was surprised I hadn't seen a video comparing all the model differences across the games because it is very interesting following the creative process of Oddworld games. I noticed the inconsistency with the slig masks when they made Exodus but I thought it was just down to preference, so most of the in-game sligs were in a standard guard uniform while the Glukkon assistants/TV presenter use the round lens ones to try look appealing.
I always loved the style of the older games how it was dark and dreary, but borders on comedy. It's nice to see them get the HD treatment but I think the charm is gone with the newer games, and maybe going towards more of the silly direction.
Man, was kinda hoping this video would be about the changing aesthetic/style of character/creature designs within the series over time, i.e. comparing creature designs of species introduced in Abe's Oddysee to the designs of those introduced in Stranger's Wrath. IMO, there's been a pretty clear, radical departure from what the series' initial aesthetic seemed to be, and I'm interested in hearing other people's thoughts on it. Whenever I hear ppl discussing Oddworld's artstyle, they're just talking about how unique and quirky it is or w/e, but only as a whole.
For all its flaws, I think Soultorm took a step in the right direction by giving individual characters unique appearances. After all, humans aren't all identical, why would Mudokons or Glukkons be?
This is a phenomenal video. Thank you for the effort. Much of it I had noticed myself, but picked up plenty of new bits along the way. The original can't be matched for me. Whilst New N' Tasty was a spirited effort, much of the bleakness of the atmosphere in places like Rupture Farms and the Free Fire Zone is lost to changes in lighting. In the original, Rupture looks like what it is - a slaughterhouse. In New N' Tasty, the fluorescent glow makes it look industrial, but not at all a terrifying place to work/be enslaved. The constantly chattering Mudokons also diminish the vibe of a brutal workplace, whereas their silence (until addressed by Abe) in the original suggests them having been subjected to cruelty. Anyways. Wonderful video!
Ha! I've been nitpicking about loads of this stuff for over 20 years. Always felt like I was the only person who noticed the hand tattoo change (which doesn't even make sense as they're Exoddus artwork)
Some feedback- I didn't know about the three-fingers-in-Japan thing. I think you used as much time explaining why the viewer should just Google it as you could have used explaining the three-fingers thing. That left me a little dissatisfied.
Gosh that hairline design looks awful thank goodness they didn't end up using it lol. I can appreciate them giving mudokons In Soulstorm distinguishing facial designs, it gives each mudokon unique look and personality them but I can't really say the same for Abe cause his original design is just do much better. Regardless, the cut scenes in Soul storm look gorgeous. Unfortunately I did not like the gameplay at all for soulstorm, the story however seemed pretty neat and hopefully they'll continue it with a future sequel. Awesome vid bro!
Great video! I can tell it took you a long time to make this 🙏🏻 I never liked how the meditation sounded in new and tasty, taking over someone’s body always sounded so majestic in the 2 original ones, why did they change it? Oh well..
I would have really loved to see the original models in later cutscenes, they really did nail the charm and really fit the character pretty much perfectly
correction for 18:50 it's actually 5 unnamed Glukkons, one of the Glukkons leans over to another and says "hey Tony, see that?, how are we going to get out of this one!"
Yeah, the thing with Sligs being depicted as green is likely why in the Game Boy Colour version of the game, they are green there. Though the Flying Sligs are yellow. Also, one thing I never see anyone mention: in Abe's Oddysee you play a flashback, detailing the events of the past 24 hours. Yet every time you go back to Monsaic Lines, the area is always the same brightness, even-though once you finish Scrabania, the sun is clearly setting
As someone who has been scouring this website for Oddworld content for about a year now; There is basically a few major channels you can find if you actively search, but the overwhelming majority are just one-off videos, like this one. Makes me with the Oddworld community was a bit more lively because the worldbuilding is like nothing I've ever seen.
I have no idea when, or why I subscribed, but this is great stuff. Where did you get those high quality sprites of Abe at 1:54 though? I never seen the ingame sprites that clearly ever.
I've just uploaded a gallery with images made for the video here:
htmlearth.com/media/oddworldcompare/
What difference on Mudokons is this??? Same designs from New 'n' Tasty???

@@melanieschmidt8753 nice colour scheme!!! I love it
I played it when I was about 5.
It's an amazing series
7:54
I deeply appreciate the dramatic sting paired with the clip here.
Mudokon's hairline is cursed knowledge, and now I can't unsee it, thanks.
12:17 you sounded so much like Abe here, I love it
Aw lol he did
This was such an interesting watch. You were right, I could never pinpoint why any of the changes looked weird.
Props to the glukks staying consistent through most of the series
it would kinda make sense that mudokons had no teeth since in oddworld lore, mudokons evolved from birds,
Muds have teeth now.
Dinos evolved INTO birds though... maybe it's the opposite.
@@ShadeMeadowsnah. With enough millions of years a bird could become humanlike
It would also make sense if the teeth returned somehow, maybe a certain gene would retrigger?
One of the biggest shocks for me was realizing that I always though Abe's eyes were that little black dot on the model of the profile silhouette, when in reality they were far below.
Omg I just realised that now
4:39 "Ugh! Pfoof! Ugh! Pfoof! Ugh!"

The editing. *THE EDITING.*
Keep up the good work :)
I'm not really a fan of the new designs, I think the gritty realistic look coupled with goofy proportions and slapstick dark humour of the original first 2 games meshed so well
O god I agree, didn't know there was a new game
You say that like you're not twelve years old and just agreeing with the video.

Not more OR less than the old one.

One of the few videos of which I haven't skipped a single second while watching, great effort indeed.
really respect the amount of effort put into this video. The editing, research, great audio and footage. fantastic man, learned a ton of trivia!
Fantastic editing, audio quality, music choice etc. Finally some good fucking Oddworld content.
At 10:30 a reason Abe's head is brighter in the left picture is probably because they wanted it to look like a flash from a camera.
I'm really glad someone is still making videos about Oddworld Abe's Exoddus and Oddysee
Thank you for this fantastic video. The editing was insanely good! And I learned a bunch of new things about these games, which I've played and replayed for like 20 years!

Nice work lol This was really cool. I really love seeing analysis like this.
This kind of video is awesome, excellent attention to detail. I didn't notice half of these things about Oddworld. Please make more of this type!
I love how the funnies in the video are perfectly timed with what he says, makes it more fun to watch!
the music, mannnn. brings me back and a tear to my eye

What is this? A new Oddworld video by someone? Fuck yeah what a perfect time to find this channel.
Also what the fuck this production quality is INSANE. The transitions from Mudokons -> Sligs -> Glukkons are top notch!
Best. Oddworld. Video. Ever.
I am so glad you made this video, been thinking about the in depth inconsintincies in the back of mind for over 10 years and you have filled the gap in my mind 😂

An emulator? I think the original still works:) The Steam versions of Oddysee and Exoddus should work.
Quality vid, down to the end card showing the music having a legend to it so it's easier to sort, fantastic.

Absurdly good job on this, such a fascinating look back!

great video! everything is detailed and clear!
Simply brilliant video! The amount of research done is really noticeable, great job!
Amazing editing and very entertaining!!
Those "scars" are called tattoos
18:34 Sligs got the same colors as a frog, green head, back, & limbs, but a yellow belly & chin/mouth.
I never played a single one of these games, but I am a sucker for deep dives into small details like this.
i think exodus is pretty remarkable considering they rushed it out in 1 year
It plays better than soulstorm, soulstorm is repetitive
A wonderful video, instant like!
I've never even heard of this game series but this was a very interesting video!
Obscure video game factoids give me life.

About the “yellow” slig thing… You probably should test for red-green colorblindness

"muh vision"

Thanks for your video!
What a great video!
g-g-get freakkyy
Great video very professional
As a Kid the number of fingers changing from 4 to 3 annoyed me to no fucking end.
I'm surprised you didn't mention how the hand scars were completely different in design from Oddysee to Exoddus.
oooh brother but you are tripping, sligs are green, there shading has yellow tinge but my brother...they..they are green lol

@@HTML_Earth So, we have to restore adobe flash in order to get these rare high quality sprites?
