I got a 6-foot, 1.25" diameter Poplar (a hardwood) dowel at a local Lowes for ~$10. [They sell a 1" diameter dowel (same wood, same length) for ~$8.] I cut the length down to about 5'. Then, sanded with 120- & 220-grit sandpaper. Will give it a Tung oil finish. This is a way to get into learning & practicing staff without spending too much $$ up-front.

I bought a wooden, 6 ft. dowl at Home Depot and there are various circumferences from which to choose. Want it a bit shorter, cut it.
