- 5 Brutal Hand-to-Hand Combat Techniques Using Palm Strikes and Elbows
Hand-to-hand combat can be highly effective in self-defense situations, especially when using powerful techniques like palm strikes and elbows. Here are five brutal combat techniques that every self-defense practitioner should know:
Palm Strike Techniques:
Palm strikes are versatile and powerful. By targeting sensitive areas like the nose, jaw, or ear, palm strikes can cause significant pain and disorientation. They are effective for close-range self-defense and can be executed quickly and with great force.
Elbow Strikes for Close Combat:
Elbow strikes are ideal for close-quarter combat. Delivering an elbow to critical areas such as the chin, jaw, or ribs can incapacitate an opponent. Elbows are hard and sturdy, making them excellent tools for breaking through an assailant's defenses.
Combining Palm Strikes and Elbows:
Combining palm strikes and elbows in a fluid sequence can overwhelm an attacker. For example, a palm strike to the face followed by an elbow to the ribs can deliver a one-two punch that leaves the opponent reeling. This combination maximizes the strengths of both techniques.
Defensive and Offensive Applications:
Both palm strikes and elbows can be used defensively and offensively. Defensively, they can block and counter incoming attacks. Offensively, they can deliver powerful blows to quickly neutralize threats. Practicing these techniques can improve overall self-defense skills.
Training for Effectiveness:
Regular training is essential to master palm strikes and elbows. Practicing with focus pads, heavy bags, or with a partner can help refine accuracy, speed, and power. Effective training also builds muscle memory, ensuring these techniques can be executed instinctively in a real-world scenario.
By mastering these hand-to-hand combat techniques using palm strikes and elbows, individuals can enhance their self-defense capabilities and increase their confidence in handling close-quarter confrontations.

Great techniques sir, as a disabled person I have taken your stick fighting techniques and now these to heart
A great lesson brought forth with enthusiasm and sincerety
Thank you Thomas!
First time here.
Loving this from the first minute.
Thank you!
Fantastic video Matt. Self defence has to be no nonsense and situational awareness is so vital. You nailed it again. Have a Merry Christmas when it comes!
Amen! Thank you. Merry Christmas!
Great solid techniques for anyone willing to practice them a little. I'm 63 , street fighter, bar bouncer and finally Black Belt, so experienced. The inside knife hand or inside hammer fist are two of my "go to" techniques if I need to drop someone fast. If they are closer, the elbow.
I've been hit and kicked on quite a bit over the years and the most devastating strike I've taken was a side kick to the area below the naval, and above the pelvis. Intestines I guess. I've had broken ribs, dislocated jaw, busted ear drum, broken fingers and countless toes, kicked in the throat, or course groin kicks.. but that side kick to that particular area is the one I remember as most painful and stopped me instantly. All the other strikes, I lingered enough to have done damage if needed. Thanks for your videos !
Thanks Matt for taking the time out I like how you go over techniques in two or three videos that is awesome it drives the training right home much appreciated❤😅👍
People are so lucky that they could watch your moves and techniques Matt, and they should take advantage to learn them, for during my time in the 60's when karate or MMA were not popular yet , you have to resort to self study which could be dangerous. I tried to develop my right hand by hitting walls with my knuckles and edge of my palm everyday. True enough, I have turned into a weapon to the extent that I was able to break bricks and boards, till I got carried away and broke the bone in my knuckles a steel cabinet. Your proper training will keep others making the same mistakes Matt. More power to you.
Hey.
Merry Christmas. Be safe And with your family
Thanks Patrick. Same to you. Merry Christmas!!
BAM!! for self defense!!
The Matt Pssquinilli drinking game! ...for self defense.
Coup de pied bas, merci, Professeur.
Haha. Yes!
Haha. Love that idea @studer6884
It's a very smart to use open hand strikes. Also preventing you from smashing your knuckles up hurting yourself. You might have to take on more than one? Be ready to go the distance. Also love them elbow strikes!
Effective and simple techniques Matt! You teach it well!
Thanks Paul. Merry Christmas!
@@pasquinilli you too Matt!
Yes
Merry Christmas to you and your family I enjoy your videos as an ex karate and Taekwondo practitioner I think you're techniques are concise and to the point
Thanks David! Merry Christmas!
Thanks Matt! makes sense! any self defence starts from mindset to hit back anytime you are not prepared. Its just going from calm to storm in a sec which changes the perspective of the attacker. Easier said than done, many of our mindset is not about hurting and when its time to hurt we just cant get that mindset which leads to damage.
Thanks Matt. Real good techniques. Thanks and Merry Christmas
Thanks Quinn! Merry Christmas!!
I'm so glad I've watched this video at home,I've learned something... watching from Papua new guinea 🇵🇬
thanks Matt
Thank you!
the best moves 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks! Which is your favorite of them all?
@@pasquinilli I like punches with the palm of the hand. It's quite devastating and the risk of an injury is less. Once I had an injury after hitting with my fist which became infected because there was an impact on the opponent's teeth and it cut me if you understand. After that I prefer to defend myself with the palms. And then, elbow strikes are incredibly effective. Sorry my english is not good enough
If open hand strikes are so good then why don’t they use them at the highest level of trained athletes known to hand to hand combat mankind? (UFC)
Palm strikes are useful in self defense. Not combat sports. You are trying to accomplish two specific and seperate things in those two very different applications of striking. In self defense, you use violence against violence and an open hand is more useful than a fist for certain strikes. In combat sports, you are often wearing gloves and trying to score points or knock someone unconscious to win the match. Punches are more effective in the give and take nature of the sport and you are not trying to stop your opponent with violence, but with superior technique and sometimes luck. A lot of people who train for self defense also don’t have conditioned hands because they are not planning on fighting for sport. Punching wrong or landing a good punch on the wrong spot, bad luck, easily breaks an unconditioned hand(or even a well conditioned hand.) There is no wrong or right technique to defend with either. If a punch might be better than an open hand strike, use it.
Sports are sanctioned. That means certain moves can not be performed. Just look up a fighter in mma who specializes in an art that has striking. A lot of those moves can not be used in a sanctioned bout. Rules and regulations. I teach palm strikes at my church. They are definitely effective.
Ever heard of Bas Rutten? Check him out.
Great no nonsense video. Easy to apply.
Great stuff as always!!
Thanks Garry. Merry Christmas!
Thanks! Fist to Bo, glad you teach it all, yo.
Hahaha. Love it. Thank you!!!!
Thank you..🙏.
Using the palms for self-defense can avoid breaking a finger I've learned in the past.
Great you are teaching so much in a short video.
🌲.
Thanks for that great comment. Merry Christmas!!

Always appreciate the teaching Cousin Matt. I struggle with finding the motivation to train outside of the dojang, though. Sending love from Delaware!
Thanks Robert. Stay warm!!
I'm working a story with a military battle. If anyone here knows hand-to-hand combat, can I get your opinion on a few things? Like, I could post a few descriptive quotes here, to see if the moves make sense, physically. Or if you'd prefer, maybe a few pointers for a few classic moves to add. One includes "grappling" on the ground, the other includes disarming a knife wielder.
Nicht schlecht...
Thanks
Did. You show these. Before. I know I’ve seen. This. Before I do. Kinda. Like this
Yes! Good eye Patrick !
Hammer fists are my favorite. I've dropped some big men using them.
It’s an awesome strike! Thank you!
I'm trying to catch up on videos. I haven't done much real training in a while. My physical exertion has all been focused on moving snow.
i could defeat him with a gun

@@pasquinilli Thanks. Let's go for this paragraph. *"[Villain] swung the knife down, but [Hero] had finally grabbed his arm. Right on time before getting bladed in the face. He held his opponent’s arm very tightly, kicked [Villain] in the stomach, and then swung the knife arm. The knife fell to the deck, but only before [Villain] kicked [Hero] to get free from his grip. The separation between the two as [Hero] stumbled backwards was very brief, as [Villain] approached and grabbed him by the shoulders. Hero used his arms to forcefully drop [Villain's] arms down, loosening his grip, and then he took his right foot to get behind [Villain’s] knees. As the foot pushed Villain’s knee from the back, [Villain] dropped backwards."* Anything vague?
@@pasquinilli At some point, I'm gonna have them roll on the ground, a classic fight move in movies. This will be military style though. How's my description in the meantime? Anything sound unclear or odd? I'm all ears.
@@pasquinilli Sorry, I didn't catch your answer
