Most Jehovah's Witnesses assume there has always been a Governing Body leading their organization stretching back to the days of Charles Taze Russell - but this simply isn't true. You don't have to look too far back in Watchtower's own literature to realise that the Governing Body is a very recent invention.

My mother was baptized in 73 when I was a teenager and I don't remember the term "governing body" being used except to refer to the business body of the organization most of the time. How things changed! And we barely knew who they were, except at very large conventions, one might give a talk. But I had no idea what most of them looked like. Now they're like JW rock stars or the Kardashians!
Exactly, I was baptized a couple of years before your mom. I don’t remember that term, only the president of the society.

Very Interesting.... and I hadn't really thought about it before. I was in it from 69 - 99 so I remember Knorr being our leader because that's what he was. Then we had the faceless governing body and it has surprised me since coming out, how visible they are. There are now 8 leaders...no matter what they say about being a servant class.
They call themselves faith full slave, not sure who to! And they are anything but discreet! I still can't believe I actually believed what they said, glad I got to see them for who they really are.

So interesting because JWs are told that Jesus selected a "faithful and discreet slave" aka Governing Body in 1919....so even in the 50's one guy was still calling all the shots? How does that make any sense???
The GB came about after the 1975 failed prophecy. A distraction was needed. A few years later they started with the "Apostate" crap. That's when my dad and I both had enough. I cannot imagine being a part of them now!

This Idea of the GB being the Faithful and Disreet Slave, and them being directly anointed by Christ Jesus, has always been an issue with me. Where was the proof? I was practically born into the religion My step father was a Gilead student , sent to Pakistan. Long story short I woke up when I was 64. I am now 72 and was at first ,devasted to learn the "Truth about the Truth" I feel free but still live with a dread of my future , they stole my life .I have only one friend who is a disfellowshipped person for" apostasy " I have always been her friend for years as I also had an issue with this cruel act by JW's. She is supporting me in my fading away.
I am so happy to have found people like you John .And watch Utube ex JW's and knowing I'm not alone in my struggles of letting go of my indoctrination.

Great video! Didn't Fred Franz even go as far as giving a detailed lecture proving scripturally that the idea of a governing body was biblically unfounded? Franz was in line to become the next president and had much to loose from these changes. Although he had a personal agenda behind his argument I believe his scriptural points against a GB are well founded. Conversely, I also disagree with the idea of a single religious figure head such as the pope or the WT presidents. Its all a racket either way.

The first mention of "governing body" was in 1943 not 1944.
July 15, 1943 Watchtower, p. 216 -
... Lord’s coming to the temple in A.D. 1918. At that momentous date, as is well known, the remnant of Jehovah’s "people for his name" were colaboring with the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society as their legal governing body.
October 15, 1944 Watchtower, p. 315 -
It is plain from the above action that the "apostles and elders" at Jerusalem, who were consulted and who under the spirit’s guidance decided and drew up the decrees to be kept by Gentile Christians, served as the governing body to the church or visible Theocratic organization throughout the earth.
The governing body is never mentioned before 1943. In 1943 it is mentioned once. In 1944 it is mentioned 57 times! In 1944, Jeremiah is even mentioned has the governing body of the time along with the elders.

There is no governing body today either. God gave the rule to Yahshua, (Jesus real name) If he did have one it sure wouldn't be one that says things are going to end over and over and they don't. He would not be putting false prophets in charge of anything.

I'm also curious of where this film came from (with or without subtitles in any language). I didn't know they had made films before, it's like JW Broadcasting of yesteryear.

And that is why no one in my neighborhood want to read Watchtower magazines.....LOL. (just kidding) On a serious note, This is some interesting stuff about the Jehovahs.
And now they took out the words 'older men' and actually wrote 'Governing Body' in the silver Bible.
I heard the new and "improved" New World Translation has the term governing body in it. I don't have a copy so I can't check it for myself.
You could do a search on their website, they use the new version.

So, instead of saying, 'we have a governing body because we're a large organization and that necessitates bureaucracy, and said bureaucracy is too large for a single person to handle alone', they had to find justification in the bible, while claiming the authors of the bible weren't as clever as them? *slow clap for excellent logic*
This modern governing body far too much to do for eight men. There should be at least one group should handle the financial affairs of Watchtower - the accounting, finances, marketing, and getting the literature out. The other group should have theological minds. They should have an understanding of Greek and Hebrew. They should be very busy studying what Josephus and alike to try to understand the days of Jesus. They study history of Rome when Jesus was on earth. Do I dare say they should read commentary from GENUINE scholars? I enjoyed writing my last thought, which is a hair rude. Do I dare even say they should read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation?

The first Christians used a "Governing Body", so isnt it logical that they would too. Or am i missing a point here. Not native english - so that may be why...
