I’ve heard the theory that if they had started the movie off with Jennifer Lawrence‘s character waking up and not knowing that Chris Pratt’s character was the one who woke her, it may have just made this movie so much more interesting.
It's a theory, but it changes the genre of the movie. As it is, the movie is a psychological thriller in a sci-fi setting. By being in Jim's shoes, we see he's a good person put in an impossible situation. He tries everything to fix the situation himself, fails, and eventually goes borderline suicidal with loneliness. He only wakes Aurora out of necessity to survive himself. And he hates himself for doing it. Now, if we see the action through Aurora's eyes, it becomes more of a horror thriller in a sci-fi setting. We don't know Jim is a good person, driven to do something horrible only in the direst need. We see him as an unknown. I like the thought experiment of what it would be like to be alone a ship the way Jim was.
The way Mancuso is able to really help start the troubleshooting once he wakes up points to a big question I have about the movie. When Jim wakes up, he's told they will spend the next four months learning about colony life. So there's a plan to have all 5,258 people awake, eating, and doing things for 4 months. Why not break that group up into shifts (beyond the fact that it would mess with the “Adam and Eve” trope)? 120 years is 1,440 months. Broken into 4-month "shifts" that's 360 groups of 14 to 15 people. So, everyone's still being fed, watered, maintained, and feeling "cooped up" aboard the ship for 4 months, it's just spread throughout the voyage instead of all at the end. In the meantime, if something goes wrong (which is entirely possible on a 120-year-long space voyage), those 14 or 15 people who are awake are able to be alerted and to wake up anyone who needs to wake up to fix the issue. Wear and tear over that time are some of the first things that come to mind; but you could convert some of the cabin space you don't need (because only a few people are awake to need them) and turn them into spare parts storage.

I was just Wondering , Aurora Talked about Having The Roundtrip from Earth To homestead 2 , But if she did manage to get to Homestead 2 , what pod would she be using?? Meaning There's a Procedure that can be done to Hibernate , But Not On Homestead 2 but On the Ship 🤔
Did anyone in these comments even see this movie? At the end they had planted plants for food. There were chickens literally running around. The food for the passengers might run out but they brought enough resources to seed an entire planet. Also why is there an argument on if a DECK CHIEF with acess to all the restricted areas is passenger or crew? He even claimed the ship as his. I didnt need to see the movie to put that together.
Everyone talking about how good the movie is meanwhile I just realized how beautiful Jennifer Lawrence was in this movie. I mean I couldn't get my eyes off her in this clip, she looked really beautiful haha
If the movie started with Jennifer Lawrence waking up and slowly finding out about Chris Pratt instead, it would have been a way more intriguing movie.

how many spare pods do you make? 10, 50, 5000 ? because if 20 people wake up and they had built 10 spare pods there is going to be some fighting going on,better to have none
@derek-press probably similar to emergency devices on other large scale vehicles. Large ships usually have enough liferaft space for the entire capacity of the ship, so I would assume you would want the same for this.
The only unbelievable part was once the ship's officer found out that there was malfunctions on the ship, an emergency protocol should have been started and he should have awakened the crew. The idea that he would keep the ship in danger is ridiculous.
Good movie, don't care what anyone says can please everyone! It's also interesting that the ships computer woke 2 people that where needed to fix things to complete the voyage! As far as the woman being taken out of hyper sleep, yes I chose you but it had to be someone as I or anyone could not be expected to live alone and this would also jeopardize the mission! So actually she not only could have saved everyone else life but her own as well!
@@Gala-yp8nx None of the above. The first was a pod failure, he then woke up the girl because he was lonely, which is why she now hates him. The third was also a pod failure.
@@London1869 actually, if you look quickly at Jim's pod display you'll see that he is a Mechanical Engineer. In today's world, that degree plus four years of experience qualifies Jim to be an astronaut. In this case, the ship should have woken up the chief engineer and after evaluating the problem he would have followed his procedures and woken up the appropriate manpower. The chief engineer would have seen that the ship's diagnostic system was offline and would have made getting it back up a priority. That would have told him that the hull was breached and pointed him to the damaged reactor control system. In my working life I was a field service technician in industrial instrumentation and process controls. Troubleshooting things like this were one of my favorite things.
It's engineering common sense not to put the entire crew on hibernation for the entire 99 years travel time. Staggered hibernation schedule every 5 or 10 years would be better to ensure an awake crew is available at all times.
Love the movie. Allthough I often could see a somewhat dark/humourous show, about the outcome, dealing with all the red tape/insurance issues, and offices communicating between Earth, and homestead II, and the delay of messaging back and forth. Epecially if they had kids.....and inbred kids.
This movie frustrates me so much. There are so many great plot points here that are just wasted on Stockholm Syndrome. And there's barely any interaction with actual space. This is the first time the movie actually gets real.
Why wouldn’t they have an extra set of pods for 25% of the passengers. And they should have had someone awake. Like a group of 10 people that stayed up for a year at a time and went in shifts. Boom. Any issues like this you can fix them. Along with having a second engine worth of supplies. These king of voyages would be essential for spreading the human race
They actually explain it during the movie. The mechanism to get passengers and crew asleep is much more complex and expensive than waking them up. And since hibernation pods have never failed, EVER, and the ship is so incredibly safe, there's no need for even the crew to be awake.
Any crew member would know there waking early was a big problem, finding three people had woken early was an emergency. Plus he was seriously sick from, he thought, hibernation sickness but couldn't spend time resting as originally planned.
Why would they split up?! They have all the time in the world! And they just discussed that things are malfunctioning to the point where they might not be able to find each other for days at a time!
I think that they suggested that later, but he said that it would take too long to get them up fully and up to speed. And whoever woke up would then be doomed because there's no returning to hibernation.
@@Lanelle_bella yea that would of been a good option - at least their offspring would have made it there and lived to tell the tale of the parents struggle (and how they saved the entire ship and it's passengers). Ha.
I doubt the ship was equipped with infant facilities. Even if there was a pregnant passenger on board there wouldn't be enough supplies to raise a child for the next three years.

@@darkracer1252 cant imagine they couldn't just bring the hibernation machines with them if they wanted to. they just didn't because they thought the pods couldn't fail
@@da_knug This is a one-off movie, and it's a shame because the worldbuilding suggests there's just a little more out there that could be very interesting.
One critical question, unfortunately, we do not have enough information to answer: Does this universe have tech portable enough to re-hibernate travelers in transit or not?
I was just Wondering , Aurora Talked about Having The Roundtrip from Earth To homestead 2 , But if she did manage to get to Homestead 2 , what pod would she be using?? Meaning There's a Procedure that can be done to Hibernate , But Not On Homestead 2 but On the Ship 🤔
Homestead 2 would have had the facilities. It would have been included on the initial colony set up because Earth would have wanted it's ships back.
Awsome movie.
RIP James Earl Jones 😢
uhhh.... this is Lawrence Fishburne.
Everyone talking about how good the movie is meanwhile I just realized how beautiful Jennifer Lawrence was in this movie. I mean I couldn't get my eyes off her in this clip, she looked really beautiful haha
This is a great movie, I had heard there was going to be a squall to it, but I hadn’t anything more to it?
Fantastic...
2:07 it took Jim two and a half years to try and open that door.
Anything is possible to open if you have the right tools or knowledge.
If the movie started with Jennifer Lawrence waking up and slowly finding out about Chris Pratt instead, it would have been a way more intriguing movie.
"Any more trees I need to know about?" 😅
You'd think if they built a space city they might of considered:
"What if someone wakes up early? What if some of the pods dont last long enough you know, they become defective?"
'𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐲, 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧~'
how many spare pods do you make? 10, 50, 5000 ? because if 20 people wake up and they had built 10 spare pods there is going to be some fighting going on,better to have none
@derek-press probably similar to emergency devices on other large scale vehicles. Large ships usually have enough liferaft space for the entire capacity of the ship, so I would assume you would want the same for this.
They made the exact same mistake as the Titanic. Always be prepared for everything, even the stuff that "can't happen".
How awesome would it be if Gus was wearing a Predator costume when they first met him? 🙂
He needed dark glasses and a raincoat.
The only unbelievable part was once the ship's officer found out that there was malfunctions on the ship, an emergency protocol should have been started and he should have awakened the crew. The idea that he would keep the ship in danger is ridiculous.
that three says everthing mankind will never understand the value of mother earth until its to late
1:50 mark.........that look
Oh sh$t . In seconds he already realizes how messed up this is
You can always judge JIm for waking up someone, but you waited a year you dont give a crap.
Two people I couldn't care about less: Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt.
There's a whole lot of people in Hollywood I couldn't care less about before these two ... in some part because they made this awesome movie.
Two people to fix the ship, one to keep them sane.
@@Gala-yp8nx None of the above. The first was a pod failure, he then woke up the girl because he was lonely, which is why she now hates him. The third was also a pod failure.
LOL dude they were chosen to be awakened because they were trendy Hollywood stars.
Let's not forget how she was needed to vent the reactor as gus was not available, sooo she was needed
I hear that this was based on a true story.
It was Hunger Games in Space: A Jennifer Lawrence Fishburne tragedy
Saving this
Never go into space with Laurence Fishburne.
Who the hell planted a tree in my Matrix?
Fishburne played the same role in Predators.
It's engineering common sense not to put the entire crew on hibernation for the entire 99 years travel time.
Staggered hibernation schedule every 5 or 10 years would be better to ensure an awake crew is available at all times.
Or they could have programmed the android for the ship's maintenance instead of putting him on a bar.
issue is you can't wake up lol, the machines don't have the capacity to put people back to sleep.
1:50
He should have been corrected
"TWO failures actually....... it's a long story"
Passengers or Prometheus... Take your pick. Since there's negativity for both movies.
Passengers was the better of the two by far.
passengers you get jennifer. prometheus you get xenomorph or david. it's a easy choice.
Love the movie. Allthough I often could see a somewhat dark/humourous show, about the outcome, dealing with all the red tape/insurance issues, and offices communicating between Earth, and homestead II, and the delay of messaging back and forth. Epecially if they had kids.....and inbred kids.
I would've liked to have Lawrence Fishburne's character play a bigger role towards the end of the film.
Deck Chief, my memory had him as the captain
Don't worry. Literally everyone makes this mistake when they first watch this film.
And if he didn't wake her, they would all end up dead
This movie frustrates me so much. There are so many great plot points here that are just wasted on Stockholm Syndrome. And there's barely any interaction with actual space. This is the first time the movie actually gets real.
Look up the video that rearranged the story to make Jen’s character the main with her waking at the start. Would have made this film 1000x better
Once Gus woke up he should have woke up the Captain and senior crew immediately
He’s the Deck Chief lol he’s the one in charge of everything aka the captain. You’re an idiot
Fatal flaw in the ship -why with advanced radar would it just cruise into massive rocky area and not simply take evasive course around it ......
"evasive" action traveling at .50 light speed?
@@johnredman4059
Jeopardy contestant #3:
What is, "velocity and momentum?"
Because. …shut up.
did you ever question how a ship like that would do that?
Tesla auto pilot...😂
Is this a another movie or a deleted scene?
It's the actual movie.
Movie called, "passengers". decent movie
*at least he found a check to do fun stuff with*
I quite liked this film
Why wuld they not have a rotating skeleton crew?
Because hibernation can only be induced on the ground.
took me a long time to get here from Aldelpia Andromeda and i need to freeze you all for the next trip
got bbq sauce?
Why wouldn’t they have an extra set of pods for 25% of the passengers. And they should have had someone awake. Like a group of 10 people that stayed up for a year at a time and went in shifts. Boom. Any issues like this you can fix them. Along with having a second engine worth of supplies. These king of voyages would be essential for spreading the human race
Too many factors that can go wrong will go wrong. People will stay awake or decide they can make themself king of the ship
They actually explain it during the movie. The mechanism to get passengers and crew asleep is much more complex and expensive than waking them up. And since hibernation pods have never failed, EVER, and the ship is so incredibly safe, there's no need for even the crew to be awake.
When Jim and Aurora wake up too early they freak out and stress.😱
When Gus wakes up too early: “Oh man😔 Welp better get to work 🤔”
Lol
Any crew member would know there waking early was a big problem, finding three people had woken early was an emergency. Plus he was seriously sick from, he thought, hibernation sickness but couldn't spend time resting as originally planned.
that film is a true sci-fi in the spirit of the classics. No wonder plebs couldnt digest it.
We enjoyed the movie from the beginning to the end. I rly dont care about all the hate.
"said that couldn't happen" bro forgot about titanic
Why would they split up?! They have all the time in the world! And they just discussed that things are malfunctioning to the point where they might not be able to find each other for days at a time!
why wouldnt they just wake up tech experts because the ship was in jeopardy and literally everyone would die, so its justified in waking some one up ?
I think that they suggested that later, but he said that it would take too long to get them up fully and up to speed. And whoever woke up would then be doomed because there's no returning to hibernation.
50% light speed, roughly 100 year journey means that this planet is only 50 light years away from earth… if only 😂
Takes time to accelerate and then time to decelerate. So, it's probably not close to 50 light-years.
I am not sure why they did not end the movie with them having kids?
That's for the sequel.
They could of both shared the sleep pod, alternate 10 years at a time - or the last one left could of gotten in and still made it there.
@@justin-tyme Or they could have had ONE child, raised it to adulthood, and then have that adult-child enter the sleep pod when it's about 25 or so...
LMy theory about this movie that it may have been inspired by the movie wall e. Because it's just like that movie, all Though they travel 5years,and the avalon travels 120years.it's just the year gap
Can we please kill the "don't touch anything" joke in movies?
Or at least have a movie where someone says it and the "dumb but capable" protagonist doesn't touch anything after it is said.
Seems like you are saying the jokes is 'untouchable', he he he
While we are at it, can we please also retire the 'speak English' joke in the movies, when the tech character is speaking is pretty easy to understand lingo, but the clearly overqualified protagonist still has to sound cool by asking him to dumb it down for everyone.
@@sarthakmukherjee6164 Oh yes please.
I like this movie, but I can think of a few changes that would have improved it.
Is this from a Director's Cut? Fishburne wasn't in the version I saw, just Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence, and Michael Shannon as the robo-bartender.
