I was sent this video by a friend, and would like to share what I found concerning Brenda's 5 main points. Plant enzymes are essential to human health - I have not done a lot of research on this topic, though from my own experience I have found I can digest raw food easier than cooked food with less stomach upset and tiredness and feeling heavy after eating. Even if the food is of the same simplicity i.e. cooked veggies versus the same one in a salad. Cooked foods are toxic - This is true, and although you CAN minimize potential toxicity by steaming or boiling the compounds are still created even at low temperatures. She also mentions that SOME nutrients increase, while the majority decrease, especially the protein which loses half of its biological value. There is also no mention of Digestive Leukocytosis. We get plenty of vitamin B12 from plant foods and internal production - This is false, at least in our current state. We used to get B12 through our environments and the bacteria living everywhere, but living in civilization with sterilization, chemicals, and washing all our food it kills the majority of the bacteria we get B12 from. Everyone has a difficult time getting adequate B12 as food does not contain it unless is it added as a supplement which it often is. Even on a carnivorous diet people come up with B12 deficiencies. Legumes contain antinutrients that are best avoided - This is true as well as she mentioned during her talk. A lot of them can be destroyed by cooking or sprouting, although they are not necessary in our diets and just the fact that we are not able to handle the antinutrients and eat them in their raw state, indicates that they are not the optimal food for humans. Raw foods reverse chronic disease - There are 5 main mistake humans are making with their diet including eating animal product, eating plants we aren't adapted to eat, processing our food, treating our food with chemicals, and cooking our food. If you eliminate any one of those you will see benefits and a reduction in chronic disease. A vegan/vegetarian approach eliminates 1-3 while a raw food diet eliminates all 5. Raw is simply more powerful than the rest, please look at Dr. Robert Morse and the success that he has had reversing stage 4 cancer, Lyme disease and more all through a raw food diet. A few important points Brenda DID NOT mention: The importance of hydration in our food and how most people are chronically dehydrated unless they eat a diet consisting primary of fruit and tender greens. How cooking DESTROYS the life of the food and the coherent sunlight energy called biophotons which helps us to feel connected to others around us. The bowel transit time of food, eating a dehydrating cooked food diet with gluten and grains slows down our digestion causing blockages and putrefaction leading to disease, poor mood, and an "all gone" feeling in your stomach often though of as hunger. Of course not all ways of going about the raw food diet are optimal, and a lot of people who follow them still make other mistakes. It’s not all about the food it is all about the life we lead. Its time to get out. I’ve slipped into isolating and not connecting. I’m not posting on social media either and I’m disappearing. Time to get back healthier than before. It’s never too late. I want to believe this is a phase I am going through to get to a better place. Love to you all💜
This is best presentation I have seen and I will now try to buy some of your books. I will definitely aim for raw again. I did it years ago and then slid into bad habits although still vegan because of how my partner and family eats but now I will challenge myself to achieve better health for myself regardless of family pressures etc. . I like seeing someone who doesn't just use words like more or improved but presents hard data. Many naive followers make a big ado about nutrition improvements they don't realize are very small. I'm adding Brenda Davis to my watch list.
No matter how much science there is on anything, in the end each individual makes their choices. Meaning I’ve come across many who learned what benefits they can achieve by just one tweak and then watch them do it for a short period then revert back to their old habits. It takes a strong commitment to make a positive change that is ultimately sustainable with the individuals lifestyle at any point in their life.
I'm personally biased against raw vegan diets, so I appreciate that Brenda Davis gave it a fair treatment (instead of just dismissing raw food diets out of turn), actually looking at the science behind the claims. Some of the toxins generated in cooking was interesting to learn about, especially.
I've just discovered that I've been a "raw-fooditarian" (I'm not a raw vegan) for the last 7 years. I wasn't aware that you were on a raw-food diet by consuming >75% of the mass of your food raw. I thought it was 100%. I didn't even intend to become a raw-fooditarian. I only cook legumes and cereals and the vegetables that I cook together with them (onion, squash, aubergine/eggplant, artichokes), as well as sweet potato, mushrooms, tofu, soy milk and mussels. Other than that, I don't cook anything else. But since I don't eat sweet potatoes, mushrooms, tofu, soy milk (I drink very little of it everyday), mussels (every few weeks), legumes and cereals (usually in the same meal) that often, I'm certain I don't reach 25% of all my food, I'm technically following a raw-food diet. The reason I gradually became a raw-fooditarian was multiple: First, laziness. It's much simple and quicker to eat your food raw than to have to cook it first. Second, I had a tendency to get on weight if I eat too much cooked food, so when I decreased my physical activity, to prevent getting fatter and fatter I cut down on cooked meals (with good results). Third, I was aware that most foods when raw were more nutrient-dense than when cooked, and I didn't want to waste my food. Forth, the glycemic index of raw foods are lower than those same foods when cooked, and I don't feel great with glucose spikes. And fifth, I like to chew tough foods, it's some sort of distraction, it decreases my anxiety and, in addition, it's a great exercise for my jaw muscles and my mandible bones. The health of your mouth is in large extent dependent on how much you work out those muscles and load those bones.
Great talk - remember we need B 12 supplements - about 4 mg pr day in fortified foods if you take a supplements only twice a week you need more about 1000 mg twice Per week, and a lot of important knowledge about eating legumes - soaking, sprouting and cooking make them healthier and more digestible - fermenting is also good Legumes are powerhouses but treat them correctly

I eat beans every day, at least a cup, and usually black beans. All are canned, organic, no sodium added. I simply heat in microwave, and top with my favorite spices and seasonings. Often I mix the black beans with canned corn, canned sweet peas, and canned diced tomatoes. What could be simpler? It is delicious and the canning process properly cooks all.
How dose anyone have the time to do all that exercise? By the time I go to work do washing cooking cleaning and gardening the most I do is walking and swimming.

Dr. Howell, author of Enzyme Nutrition would not agree with her on enzymes not doing any good as they are destroyed by the strong acid in the stomach. Howell claims that our stomach has a top part he calls the Food-Enzyme Stomach where the enzymes in the live food we eat continue to do their work and I believe some come back to work after they are released into the intestines as enzymes are not really a living thing.
Enzymes in Raw food 1st task in ripening the Food ... and then, Reverse it's task to break it down food after a Period of time for the for the food to be eaten ... Enzymes in food, Also, work with the Enzymes in the body, to distribute the variant nutrients to the proper parts of the body, where needed.. Cooking food, destroys the Enzymes in food as well as the vitamins in the food, depending on the heat and duration of cooking ... Depleting the nutritional value of the food.. Raw is healthier re- enzymes. Legumes are a little different, because they typically have the brown shell on them which is "acidic" and a alkaline blocker ... Humans are Alkaline by nature and Acidity disrupts our chemistry.

It always has been and always will be mindboggling to me how anyone, especially Vegans, would ever claim vegetarianism as something good or something to aspire to. It's unfortunate and sad that she would write books on such a diet. It is an unethical, unhealthy, and unsustainable diet. It is no different than any other non-Vegan diet.
