    We compare the most common reflective finishes used in grow rooms. We look at a HPS and LED lighting system and demonstrate the benefits of using a good quality reflective surface to maximise the amount of light reaching your plants. More light = higher yield so this is very important!

    • @ericm7994
      @ericm7994 4 года назад +6

      the problem with mirrors is that the light has to pass through the glass to hit the reflective material. then pass through the glass to get back out to the plant. so it absorbs too much of the PAR value you need.
      good ol tin foil is cheap and works wonders. (the shiny side) .

    • @ericm7994
      @ericm7994 4 года назад +3

      @Trousersnake Pliskin your names awesome by the way... escape from new york was fkin dope as fuck. i use tin foil and my plants get way more light then they need anyways.. so i dont feel the need to try and maximize the reflective area like with mylar or paint... tin foil is great. and that whole "hotspot" crud is a myth

  • @harrypeterson9287
    @harrypeterson9287 8 месяцев назад

    For people on a budget, I'd suggest trying aluminum foil with a thin layer of white paint or primer over it. Extremely reflective, lets zero light through and doesn't cause hot spots. I'd guess it pretty much rivals mylar in reflectiveness at a tiny fraction of the price.

      Thanks Matt, I checked out your channel and subscribed. I'm going to watch your videos on hydro pepper production. I'm looking for advice on the best nutrient solution for our upcoming grow test with chili plants. Any advice on what to use for good flavor and yield?

    • @MattGarver
      @MattGarver 6 лет назад +2

      Personally, I use Dyna-Gro Grow 7-9-5, which is a complete one-part macro/micro nutrient with pH stabilizer, and cal-mag. While I have not used them personally, the Masterblend, General Hydroponics, Maxi Grow, and other nutrients seem to do well too. Regarding flavor, a mature chili from a flavorful variety is a good start. Soil grown plants, when water stressed can produce some of the best flavors. For quicker results indoors, growing in rockwool blocks or small containers helps. Topping right after the 3rd or 4th leaf node helps to change the shape of the plant. You want a short and wide plant, with a good canopy. Also, trimming off the leaves under that massive canopy helps. Otherwise those under canopy leaves that are not getting light are just wasting the plants energy. In addition to small pots and effective shaping, using a wet/dry cycle with extended dry times will stress the roots without killing them. This is often another trigger to start the flowering and fruiting process. Don't be afraid of trying to switch peppers to flowering sooner than thought, as pepper plants will continue to increase in canopy size even after starting to fruit. Dryer air and more air circulation, combined with more interspacing between plants, helps push peppers toward fruiting too.

    Great video
    Would reflective material be much help for the sides for the veg stage when plants are small?, as all my leaves receive light from above 2 x 600 watt MH for 18 plants grown a week apart on stands to keep the canopy even and to save space as well as having a continuous grow
    I don't see how light on the edges of the leaves would help?
    I harvest one plant per week
    9 in flower, also if the light is powerful enough to penetrate the canopy, how does side reflective help, as there is none separating the plants in the middle of the tent
    I have 18 vegging, for 18 weeks to get bigger plants and keep with the 9 week flowering cycle
    9 week veg is not enough
    I have a tent for the flowering stage, to separate the light cycle from the vegging plants that are in the same room it has
    2 x 1,000 watt HPS
    Thank you

      The thicker one reflects more IR back so its better for ceilings of the room if you don't want to be the only house in the snowstorm with a clear roof. And its tougher/longer lasting, less rip/tear prone and if its backed with white, its cleanable. Thin mylar doesn't last, it goes see through over time becomes brittle and its noisy, thick stuff looks the same after 10 years

    Shane you need to do a new video comparison, mylar vs orca grow film. Orca claims to be far superior.

    Is it worth it to overpay for Mylar 600D? Because there is also Mylar 210D. For grow tent.

      Any diamond mylar is fine.
      Thanks.

      600D isn't the mylar, it's a thread count. Higher is always better. Mars tents are like 1650D and Gorrilla or AC Infinity are 2000D.

    Hi there shane, here in holland i bougt a paint called thermoschield lumen its a paint special made for reflecting Light.
    I did paint a closet with several layers for seedling for my vegatable comunity garden and indoor grow. Im testing

    I did not see the video yet but il just let u know maybe u know this option already.
    Ps sry my typing language is bad 😂

    We have a insulation product in Canada called silver board, it is kind of similar to those dimpled hammertone reflector liners imo, but I would be very curious to know how Efficient it would be as a reflective Material. I use it to insulate the inside walls of my grow area and it seems to help a lot... anyone please comment with any knowledge on this..
    And as always , Migro gets down to the nitty gritty in record time 👍✌️👌
    You can see what silverboard is by searching ( buy silverboard insulation Home Depot Canada)
    Seems like a good alternative imo.
    Thanks!

      I've used that before with great results. Can't give you fancy metered out numbers but I can tell you from experience, it's deff worth the time. Just don't want the insulation dust to get cycled through your plants.

      I use the foil coated bubble wrap. It's great. Seal the corners with the silver tape. Comes in 4' by various lengths and attached to 2x2 frames quite easily.

    I think you should test the orca-sheeting again, but with an updated methodology to better simulate a real-life setup for growing.
    The setup in which you tested the orca-sheeting in your prior videos seems severely biased against the orca-sheeting for several reasons.
    I'm currently trying to figure out what kind of sheeting I should get, and it seems like the Lighthouse sheeting would be a good idea, but I'm not yet convinced that it beats the orca sheeting.
    This is my reasoning:
    1.) The orca-sheeting doesn't cover the entirety of the walls, neither vertically nor horizontally.
    1.a) The gaps at the corners are bound to swallow a significant amount of photons.
    1.b) The missing orca-film above the lighting fixture is bound to result in upward-reflected photons (reflected from the orca sheeting) being bounced almost exclusively towards the top. If there was a diffuse sheeting / diffuse scattering above the lighting fixture, many of the photons which initially get scattered upwards by the orca would subsequently be scattered back down again.
    1.c) The open wall on one side (to take measurements) might also impact the results of the orca-sheeting more than non-diffuse materials. I don't know whether this is the case, but I don't think one should discount the possibility. It would also be possible to close the fourth wall for testing-purposes simply by using an elevated floor with holes at the locations of measurement.
    A fair and thorough comparison of different sheeting-materials would require covering all of the walls and the ceiling equally, and without gaps (apart from tent-poles and the usual stuff inside a tent like vent-openings). IMO even the floor should in part be covered with the material in question, to most closely simulate a life-like environment, i.e. filled with plants but not overcrowded.
    I will post this comment on your other (more recent) videos as well, because I don't know whether you'll see this here, and I really think you should take this into consideration in your comparisons. You try to be very thorough in your analyses, and I highly appreciate your content. But your reasoning why non-diffuse materials should be better seems severely flawed when considering a real-life environment, i.e. inside a space covered with reflective sheeting on at least 4 sides, most likely 5 or 6 (ceiling and floor).
