Green Day - Longview & wienies - Milwaukee Mega Jam 1993

- The ill-fated Milwaukee Mega Jam took place on the lakefront Summerfest grounds; June 4, 1993. The weather was unnaturally cold and dreary with a stiff breeze off Lake Michigan holding the temperature in the 40s(F), resulting in attendance in only the low hundreds. When the rain hit, the rest of the event -- headliners Agent Orange and The Dickies (along with Tar and The Didjits) -- was moved inside to The Unicorn club. Here you see Green Day introduce a new song to the dispirited crowd eight months before it became a huge MTV hit upon the release of the Dookie LP. You also catch a portion of the infamous cocktail wiener incident!
Longview used to sound so jazzy way before Dookie was released
Listening to it now I think they had to play it slower cause Mike was still in the process of mastering the riff. Funny to see because it's such a legendary song now and this was when it was brand new, even to them.
"Guess you guys aren't ready for that yet... but your kids are gonna love it."
Green Day sounds exactly like a studio album when they play live.
Even when he forgets the lyrics 😂
The bar is set so low.
Id hope so. Their shit is so basic. They aren’t exactly Rush lol
bc they recorded Dookie over a weekend. Rob Cavallo said it was one of the most incredible sessions he'd ever had. He said Billie did vocals in 1 take per song.
@@DZ-cf6sj - none of that is true tho, at least if you believe articles written about recording the album that speak to the engineers and other crew behind it. rob cavallo was green day's producer for a long time as i'm sure you know as well as a warner records executive so he's pretty much a hype man and an unreliable source.
the real story is that it was recorded over 3 weeks and the vocals weren't perfect enough to not use comps ( where they take all of the takes, slice 'em up and combine them into one as-perfect-as-possible take). the following article gets some details wrong but it's stuff people don't know about like calling a "fernandez" a "mexican strat", but for the stuff the engineers should know about it, it's believable.
anyhow, source for all of this is this article in industry mag sound on sound:
www.soundonsound.com/techniques/classic-tracks-green-day-basket-case
it’s crazy how clean “blue” is
1993: not quite my tempo
1994: Punk Rock Legends
2004: punk rock sellouts
@georgejetson1025 I don't know you, internet stranger, but I do know human nature. I wonder if you'd turn down millions of dollars and watch your music dreams sputter and fail simply because you cared more about 'not selling out' than being successful. Green Day decided to be successful and that's okay.
@@georgejetson1025grow up
This version of longview is not great. They sounded better in small clubs. Punk rock sounds like shit in these large venues.
@@georgejetson1025 Uh. Sure.
Mike's headbanging hair while playing is THE BEST THING.
He's never grown it out since then either.
People love to call them sellouts. But these old videos proved that they’ve always had the same energy.
They probably call the, that because they sold out
@@Timmy2fingers yawn. They literally didn’t but okay.
They kinda did sellout because they became so poppy and less Punk sounding on each album. At least compared to other bands of their time.
I like their simplistic 70s Punk influence of Dookie and their previous albums. Insomniac too. And Nice Guys Finish Last from Nimrod. But they they got less Punk after that.
@@donald60s14 Except that the people who call them sell outs are talking about how they "sold out" with Dookie.
@@josejr.garcia2228 right. Someone doesn’t know what the term sell out means. Go read their chapter in the book called sellout.
Mike and Billie's haircuts are peak stoneage
Bro I didn't think this was green day fr lol
@@VengefulT1mes he doesn't know about 1993
@smallvillenerdtwo I mean no I didn't that's why I said that lol
Yeah but I kinda like it!
You must of not been around in the 90s lol that’s pretty clear 😂
Gosh Tre’s timing on this was insane, almost like he had been practicing with a click. This song can speed up live drastically, but good on him for keeping it grooving!
Any half decent drummer has been practicing with a click.
They were recording Dookie during this time maybe that’s why
@@sic6664 Any half-decent _musician_ should be practicing with a metronome. Even singers are supposed to practice unfamiliar songs with a metronome for a little while.
"My mother says to get a job, but she don't like the one she's got."
Apparently Billie Joe regretted that line. His mom was a waitress and kept the job for 20+ years after Green Day made it big. One of their early gigs was even at the restaurant she worked at. (Source: Ian Winwood's book Smash and Kerrang).
I would’ve never guessed that lyric was actually about his mom cause I never a lot of their songs to be personal (Brat particularly comes to mind)
So she retired in 2014? That's really long
this is a rare treasure of a video! Just think these guys would be playing Woodstock the following year! I'll never forget the first time seeing the Longview video back in the day on MTV.
This is great. I also never knew they went though a hair farmer phase, I love it.
they got creative with their looks many times; and I guess they still doing it now in certain way, they are punk rockers; what do you expect?
2009 ?
Great there's footage of Billie with this hair. Never seen this before.
Yeah, I was gonna say did he get dreadlocks in his hair because if so, that is dope
Or is it just really flat iron?
Oh no, he’s definitely got braids in his hair that is so fucking dope
i need to see a full version of this concert
WOW. REALLY FELT LIKE A TIME MACHINE SEEING Green Day PLAY THIS SONG BEFORE IT WAS BIG. INCREDIBLE FOOTAGE!
'93 Green Day was a special time....
this must have been one of the first times they played this. 1994 billie's voice is so good. it got better with american idiot and whatnot but it also got higher
they started playing it in late 1992/ early 1993 so they had it down pretty well by then in june
There is an earlier version where he sings “fucking myself through the night” during the chorus. Think it’s 1992 at gilman
ruclips.net/video/qOi8PYv4kHg/видео.htmlsi=SI4L2vcLzAsd9Kld
This one, in Kansas actually
I didn't know Fabio played such a killer bass back in the day
I believe that’s Mike Durnt he’s been a part of the band since 1988
this sounds so raw and so real, love it!
It's fan footage of a live performance. Of course it's going to sound raw.
@@alanduncan1980no…90’s Green Day was raw! And then they started overproducing and now they are pure pop!
lol you always hear about the Green Day Woodstock mud flinging story, but never the Green Day Milwaukee Mega Jam weenie toss!
That was training for woodstock
wow....this is crazy high quality old footage...thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My favorite Dookie song 🔥🤘
This is like finding the missing link
Dude I wish I saw them back then. I just went to a show last year. There were so many people it was insane. Imagine going to see green day in a tiny venue just old school rocking
I saw them at Edgfest 4 or 5..it was my first concert and it was in Somerset Wisconsin. I still have trouble hearing after that show. Half way thru Billy Joe took his pants off and played the rest of the show in a speedo. The crowd went nuts over it. They are definitely good live
I'm loving the hair, especially Mike's!
Sounded great. Good to see the finished version of longivew in 1993. I saw some other versions from 1993 still with differente lyrics.
It’s still not finished-this is before they added the double chorus at the end, and the ending isn’t as polished as it later was (Tré didn’t play the fill leading into the ending). Very cool to see them with their long hair and still putting the finishing touches on the arrangement for this song!
@@br1an_b I meant the final version for the lyrics.
I was at this show. The the digits & the dickies headlined.
Every time I think I've seen all of Billie and the gang's hairstyles, theres another.
This is so special! Thanks for sharing!
MORE 1993 STUFF PLEASE!
4K video just released and I got to this, thanks a lot first time watching this
Thank you so much for uploading this. It was a jewel lost in time!
why is mikes bass tone like that? makes it sound like the donkey kong menu theme
coz donkey kong menu tone is the best tone
lmaoo
They're not the biggest band in the world quite yet. Possibly sharing gear?
You do know this is a crowd recording and not soundboard audio, right?
Mike with long hair was scarier than expected
明日からまたスタートよ!頑張れ!
Its funny how often billie used to forget the lyrics on this song lol
Niceee, this is rare!!! This is the only video of the performance?
I was looking at that hi-hat in the beginning and my foot began to ache. Then someone came by and adjusted it! My foot feels better already
An event from 1993 and yet so cool that there are comments from recent months.

Amazing Tre! 💚
Oooooooooh man !! This is unique.
Wow this is awesome Longview before dookie was even released because this is the dookie promo tour
que buena banda green day,los banco, aunque ya nos los escucho
This is great.
Have you more rare videos of green day ?
Amazing to see people barely reacting to such a great tune, all because it's not on MTV yet.
The crowd has no idea what they are witnessing
They're my favorite band I've seen live.
Just 14 months before Woodstock 94
This vídeo end in the best part hahhaha
Hope to see the full concert
The meat jokes💀🙏
"This song's called 'Longview'. I'll be a millionaire in about a year because of this song. Huh. Welp, here's another wiener." - Billy Joe, kinda.
Mike so fuck*n cool with long hair
Their best song
There was a lunar eclipse with a full moon that morning, moon in Ophiuchus. June 4th 2023 we had a full moon in Ophiuchus as well.
Great when you hear a band when they were a band, not a brand.
i saw this bass mike is playing at the rock and roll hall of fame
sideshow bob and the green daze
best band ever
I love the counting crows!
We need the full thing
I just love that billy never allowed himself to become the front man. He always shows respect to each memeber

Aw man road acceptance ended too short. Great song
Literally the best cover I've seen. He even looks a bit like William

Amazing
What happened for a lot of guys in 90's rock who previously had long hair to start all adopting short hair cuts around 1994 - 1995?
do you have more footage? road to acceptance cuts out ):
“Shit I don’t eat meat…. It’s okay though, I grab it”
These guys aren't half bad! With some practice, they might go somewhere someday! 😂
Most generic comment. 🏆

I have a feeling that they're high!
Longview? More like longhair!
Was 1993 really 30 years ago? Bloody hell I'm getting old.
I wanna see the full vid!
The wiener fight ....a year before the Woodstock mud fight
When we were outlaws
Awesome!
This was a year b4 Woodstock 94 so they had ent learned their lesson about throwing shit in the cloud yet!🤣🤣🤣
You got any more footage. Please Upload
I may be wrong, but at 3:16 it sounds like somebody shouts the iconic “YOU WILL” that can be heard on the studio recording. I always thought the guy that shouted it in the studio did it randomly, I guess it was a thing prior to 1994 as well?
If I remember correctly, the guy who shouts is tim armstrong, from op ivy and rancid. May be wrong tho
@@MattRTGB Its Tre fuck sake....and he shouts it every time live....
@@laravelisbullschitt3281 I meant studio
The guy from Counting Crows looks so young
Chucky billy!!😂😂
Its so crazy how old these guys are today

EPIC 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Billie Joe is so stoned!🤣🤣🤣
This was in the peak of their drug experimentation days. The bass player wrote the riff for Longview when he was tripping on acid and recorded it and then it took him 6 weeks to learn how to play it
