Other Tidbits:
2nd Night of Live 105's sold-out Not so Silent Night. Everybody waiting in line got heavily rained on from ~9am to 3pm while they lined up early for the show :P Many fans recognized each other from previous shows. One of us (who was also the 2nd person in line!) even got called up to join the band on stage for ‘Know Your Enemy’!
For ‘Longview’, Billie invited a young fan to play and sing with them. After the end, the kid asked Billie Joe and Mike Dirnt if he could play another song. After listing a few he knew, he then choose ‘J.A.R.’ Afterwards, Billie was so impressed that he let the kid keep the guitar, which pleasantly shocked him and all the fans. The guitar, named 'Buddy', is/was Billie's backup guitar to 'Blue' (!). / bjwkqk1h04g
Before ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’, Billie Joe paid tribute to the victims of the Ghost Ship warehouse fire in Oakland. “What I’ve always loved about the Bay Area is that we have the best freaks and weirdos on the planet. This is our own… this is our people… friends of friends… So my heart goes out to all those people who perished in the warehouse.”
Unlike the October 20th Green Day show we went to at the UC Theatre which ended well after midnight, the Oracle Arena’s curfew was 11:30pm, so there was no encore this time. There was also a lot more crowd surfing this time as well :P We were in the 1st row for that one as well, and the only crowd surfers I remember going over us were the 2 that were invited up on stage, lol, I believe the 1,400 UC Theatre might have been a bit too small for a mosh pit to break out :P

The coolest parts about this and videos like this are:
A)The fan being so confident in his abilities that he can play the song with the band that wrote the song, and
B) The willingness of the band to give up an entire part of their preplanned set to a fan who claims they know their music, and have it go off without a hitch.
Ikr? Its crazy how smooth the whole thing went. The fan had great control over his own performance, and the entire band is able to perfectly play a song they probably didn't even practice during the tour.

C) The fact that this guitar was "Buddy" a Billie's Blue tour alternative custom strat and not another epiphone that they normally give away to fans!

This makes me love the band even more. Unlike other bands, they aren't stage hogs, and they care about making it more fun for their fans. It's inspirational
I agree. Although I think that they've probably gotten tired of performing the songs so they let fans have a go. It's a win-win for them.
Sarah 017 Green Day sucks musically as far as live, but are one of the best bands as far as getting the crowd involved, it's one big party and everyone has energy flowing through them whether they are in the pit or in the nose bleeds. Billie is great with his onstage presence.
piratexander tired of playing songs? haha, no, it's just a way to get fans involved. Not many bands in the history of rock invite fans onstage at almost every show, and they have given hundreds of guitars away, and those aren't cheap guitars either.

I didnt say he sucked at guitar, but he can't sing worth shit live. I play guitar, never said he sucked at guitar, billie writes some of the most simple chord progressions and leads yet they sound amazing, and that takes skill.
I know the lyrics to Green Day songs, but, if I was onstage, I'd completely forget. This kid not only knew the song lyrics, but played well under the pressure. My hat goes off to you. And Billie Jo looked really impressed, too.

i know thousands of green day lyrics just from playing green day rock band then later on my guitar when i learned to play, depending on what song it’d be i would be able to do the lyrics at the same time or not but they always run through my head even if i cant sing them myself

That billie, in addition to surrendering part of the set to the fan, put his own guitar down, took up vox and entrusted the entire song to that fan is insane. That it went off perfectly is nuts.
Jason was in the back, and switched to rhythm to let the kid shred the solo.

I remember being in middle school and being one of the few kids who liked Green Day....so many people said "their songs are only 3 chords, they suck!" Even at that age, I knew why they were missing the point. Just because anyone can play it, does not make it worse....it often makes it better! This is what music is all about -- it's a shared experience. Awesome!

@photag216 I even had a teacher who liked Green Day when Dookie came out. It really wasn't until Warning when their popularity crashed. And I love Warning and that was the first time I saw them live. On the Warning tour. It was amazing. There were still a lot of people at that concert. Then after that they toured with Blink 182 and I saw that. They kicked Blink 182's ass. A lot of people there too. Then I saw the American Idiot tour and Jesus God they were huge again.

I think he's the most talented kid who they have pulled up to stage that I have seen.... normally they make me cringe watching them fuck up badly, but that kid owned the stage! He wouldn't of even been born when Longview or J.A.R were released. Good to see new young fans that know & can play the classics from the early years when I was a teenager!

Yup! I have a couple in my little pocket of my jeans most of the time... It's always when I forget to swap some over or pick out a couple from my Bowl of Picks that I end up in a guitar shop or at a friends house and don't have my favorite brands and gauges available!

Watching this for the 20th time, each time with a huge grin on my face! This kid is me 20 years ago, it's every Green Day's fan dream. I don't think I would have mustered the courage to ask BJ to play the song I wanted. He did, and oh wow he killed it! That emotional outburst when BJ is bowing to him after the solo... Not to mention keeping the guitar. This is something to tell your grandchildren for sure! Well done Jimmy!

I saw my first Green Day show 2 weeks ago. It was one of the best moments I have witnessed on my own... Drove all the way from Albany, NY to Pittsburg, PA. 8 Hours. I missed Weezer and Fall Out Boy, but I made it within 30 minutes of Green day. I already knew the setlist, but it didn't fucking matter. I've waited 17 years

First of all, great job to the kid. I feel like even if I knew how to play these songs, if I went up there I would instantly forget everything. Also, it's impressive that they were able to play JAR with no notice, considering that's not a song they play often.

Green Day just has a good thing going. They’ve always had a good thing going. There songs are energetic and fun/catchy. They have awesome stage presence. They just seem like it would be such an honor and a gift to be apart of that band. And they make boat loads of money on top of it all. Good on them.

I can't believe I haven't seen this video before. I don't smile too often, usually put on a fake on when hanging out with people, but the way the band acted and how much fun the kid had really put a smile on my face. Playing with Green Day is definitely on my bucket list.

Fourth Fusion I said the same thing to him when it was over. He said he couldn't hear Billie at all it was to loud, and he was walking to Mike because the set list was infront of him and he thought Billie had already said no to his song request so he wanted to see what song was up next, he was planning on playing it..LOL
I don't think he could hear Billie and he was looking in Mike's direction so when Mike started telling him Billie was talking to him he went to walk over to Mike to figure out what Mike was saying lol.
