2020 and I surely miss The Civil Wars
I'm glad this version exists. I like to really listen carefully to lyrics in songs, not just the melody. So even when young, I always thought this was a sad song. And for some reason, the happy tune made it even sadder to me. It seemed as if the song was lying, trying to disguise the gloomy words. But I also like this version, where the tune matches the words. This is just an amazing song in general. My very favorite.

You can totally tell by their body language that they literally play off of each other and are so comfortable relating to each other through music and that's why we love the cohesive duets they produce!!

When I was little people would sing this to me as a lullaby and it would make me cry. I loved the song, but I knew it was a tragedy. I was surprised other people didn't see the song the same way I did. It broke my tiny kiddo heart.

I think that The Civil Wars are one of the most talented and original bands out there. They make beautiful music, their voices blend in perfect harmony and mostly, they have character. Everything they do, it's theirs; they have their own unique touch and that is what makes a real artist. I really love them! :)

I absolutely love this song and have always seen it as somewhat sad and lonely, especially the line "you'll never know, dear, how much I love you" ... so their take is so refreshing and wonderful.
This is always how I heard the song. I never thought it was happy, when I was little I used to cry to this song. They did and also do a beautiful job.

I showed this to my 3 year old, as this is one of her favorite songs. I expected a comment from her because it sounded different from what she was used to, but she just watched in amazement before saying, "They are pretty people!" And I couldn't agree more--great job!!!
I always thought this is how the song was supposed to sound. If you've ever loved someone a lot and lost them this song would make sense. It's not stalker-y because no where in the song does the singer say they are going to do anything to the other person other than beg for them back and take all the blame. It's the torment of losing love.
Actually it says if you leave me and love another you will REGRET it... that sounds pretty stalkish and threatening to me, just saying
Didn't sound like a threat, but more like a warning to not make a mistake that they'd regret on their own.

I sing this version to my nephew all the time. He now requests it when he can't sleep. John and Joy's voices bring a deeply beautiful and morose quality to this song, yet unheard of.

"We like it when things are dark...can't have things be too happy" - wow. Don't think I've ever heard an artist be so blunt about the (so called 'negative') mood of their music.
All of my music is really dark or sad... people are always telling me to "find a major key" and "sing something happy for once". Now I'm gonna be fearless and say - well yeah, I'm not an especially happy person, but there is so much beauty and depth to be found in this kind of music. So stuff you, I'll sing what I like!
Such a beautiful version. I use to sing this to my son when he was a baby, now he is 18 and I couldn't wait for him to hear this great version. I fell in love with the song all over again. Love the Civil Wars, I hope we have them around for a long time to come.

I sang this song to all of my children growing up and to my grandchildren. But my youngest son and I had a real connection to this song. He passed away at the age of 17. This is the only version I will listen to now. It’s the most legitimate version and there is a sad beauty to it.

This song means so much to me. My mom used to sing this to me whenever I was sad. She cheated on my dad and is moving to Florida. My friend whom I loved used to all me his only sunshine but a few months ago he took his own life. I miss them both, and so hearing this song makes me so sad, but I love it so much.

wow!!! this is just gorgeous - I am so in love with this band - I got Barton Hollow on vinyl shipped from the U.S. and they absolutely hit that chord in me where music I instantly fall in love with lives - they should definitely do a cover record, their cover of this, portishead, billie jean, elliott smith are so incredibly exquisite - I think you'd have to have no emotion not to be in love with this music and the passion they have for it, just gorgeous
