my favourite vcr was the ferguson fv10b, a video pirates dream machine... totally immune to the macrovision copy protection, you could just rent and copy.... and the best bit, not only was it immune to the macrovision but it recorded that onto the copy! so you could lend your copy to friends and they couldnt copy your copy! (unless they bought a fv10 also)

This looks like a VCR that would normally be sold only in Japan. They had very unique high-end VCRs over there. The fact they used an idler tire on a machine that cost $2000 is beyond me though.

The video problem could be a worn-out/dirty video head, idler tire, or hardened pinch roller. First, check for any bad capacitors on the STK regulator power board with heatsink attached in the power supply, these often fail and one of the common problems for this model that can cause irregular voltage to video and audio. Then, check for bad capacitors on the S-VHS video board, but I seriously doubt this is the problem because I haven't seen one that fail, since the screen shows interference line and fluctuation. A bad video board with weak caps usually have no color, dark video, black video, or no video, shown in all affected Panasonic S-VHS models until 1999. Despite that, historically, Toshiba S-VHS has been more-reliable than Panasonic, JVC, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, and Sony.

The best if the vcrs were the late model units. From a performance and reliability standpoint. The fewer the parts (electrical and mechanical) the higher the reliability. Unfortunately these newer machines also used plastic parts which were more easily damaged due to abuse. Kids were the biggest problem with these machines. And allsop wet head cleaners. Those lightweight machines were pretty really reliable if they were looked after. All of mine still work and i use them for archiving all the time. The old ones just keep breaking down. One thing after another. Too many mechanical parts, too many electrical parts to go bad.
Sorry but i don't buy into the old is better when it comes to electronics. One of my audiophile friends has just bought into class D amplifiers and now wonders what all the hype is for the old stuff. Said there is no going back to those old amps that you give yourself a hernia lifting.

@@ableite digital tracking is more precice as it measures the rf level from the heads. Some machines have a meter to peak the level but 99% don't. Auto tracking is accurate untill the heads wear but by that time you aren't tracking it manually either. Manual level control is nice for audio level. I know some people used then as audio recorders. I made a few mix tapes and used to use it to log satellite music before I got DAT. The head switching flutter sound always bothered me. Many don't notice it but once you hear it you can't unhear it. Just like the tones embedded in radio and tv sound tracks for the rating meters that people carry around.

He got called in all the time to make recordings sound great because the player in the band was too drunk or stoned to play. When you listen to music there is a good chance that what you were hearing is not the people whose picture's on the album cover. Look up the wrecking crew movie. Muscel scoals rhythm section is another one. Toto was a band made up of professional studio musicians. Leland sklar is probably the most recorded bass player in the world, Larry Carlton and Lee ritenour the most recorded guitarists. Then there was Tommy todesco, gken Campbell, John Denver Sonny Bono Hal Blain. They were part of the wrecking crew. They played most of the music we all listened to in the 60s and 70s. Sound quality wise they are the same. They record to tape differently. Beta and 8mm record the sound at the same time using the same heads. VHS uses dedicated audio heads to record the audio onto a seperate track at a different angle into the tape ahead of the video track. This results is double the tape wear and of course there are 2 more heads to wear. People would get excited by the number of heads a machine had. More heads mean higher tape wear. Sony used 2. The 4 head machines Slhf900 uses 2 double azimuth heads. The 1000 used 2 double azimuth and 2 flying erase. 8mm used 3. 2 video and 1 erase. VHS had as many as 10 heads. 4 video (2 so 2 ep) 2 HiFi audio, 2 special effects and 2 flying erase. This Toshiba has 8. That's s 8 years to wear and 4x the tape wear. So each pass is like playing it 4x on a 2 head machine.
