This video was a big help. I have the RCA VR674HF version and it wasn't loading up the tape in the cassette at eject. I cleaned everything as you did and also took apart the mode switch. However, my belt was totally worn out and stretched, that definitely needed replaced. I found a place online: VCR parts and they had a square belt replacement in the correct size (IC: 9.2 inches Thickness: .078) for only $12.00 with shipping. I was able to purchase the service manual for my model online for around $18.00 and that had everything I needed as far as views, procedures, etc. but this video was icing on the cake - nothing like seeing it in person opposed to written service procedures. The place I bought the belt from also had brand new mode switches for this model for $6.50. I cleaned my old one, but if it acts up, I would be wise to replace with new given the age and scarcity of parts (have to desolder the old and solder in the new). This VCR is close to 30 years old but I love it! I bought it brand new!
I had a toshiba m-550c which is identical inside, but there were just too many issues, it ended in the junk pile, but i learned a lot. thanks! I had to reinstall the tape unlock pin and clean the mode switch and remove the head cleaner brush but also discovered a few broken plastic pieces and the vcr still would power off instead of playing / seeking a tape. I had fun.
My VCR was not in the home position. I cleaned it and am ready to test it. Two questions, 1 - How to do get the bottom gear into the home position? 2 - What were you hitting to fake the unit into thinking the tape was installed?
You sure give me confidence in repairing these machines. I use to work on Aircraft Electrical. This is just a little smaller electro mechanical. Looks like fun learning the items. The Oscilliscope would be a problem for me on the audio and video RF checks. Alignment and all that.

Very cool, an easy fix. I've cleaned some mode switches too. I've never seen a VCR acting as weird as this. Also, you did a mistake, the channel and record buttons are inside the door that opens at the left of the VCR.
The last time I had a VCR in the shop, many moons ago, it cost me 75$. If the tech did the job like you here, it was well worth it, even if he replaced a two bit part. A good five minute cleaning should be part of the service routine. WTG Dave, thanks for your vids. Don

I have had a few free machines come my way with this problem, the last one was a top of the line Panasonic. You have shown the correct way to clean the switch, I have seen people flood the switch with WD40!
WD40. Good way to destroy the switch. Deoxit is what is needed. It is expensive, but you get what you pay for, and I don't just say that because I won the video contest grand prize last year and picked up a cool 1000USD.
Any ideas why my vcr pinches the tape once i stop it from fast forwarding in jet speed? I've watched the mechanism and it seems like the pinch roller engages at the tape at the wrong moment and creases the tape. Rewind and play is fine just ff..
Wow... who continues to use a VCR? OK.... i am living in New Zealand right down the bottom of the world but when they switched off the 4:3 analog PAL TV system quite a few years ago here almost everyone's VCR and CRT TV headed to landfill and folks had to 'trade up' to personal digital recorders (basically a box with a HiDef tuner and a hard drive) and a 16:9 flatscreen. No one comes to me with a VCR to be fixed now !
I've created a business out of selling VCRs and VCR/DVD combos that grosses over $10,000 a month and would do more if I could I could add 24 hours to the day. There is not only a need, but a huge demand.

Some of my VCRs have button issues, when I press one of the buttons the VCR does another function. I showed the issue in my last video. Do you know what causes this and have you fixed these issues before?
That's usually caused by bad contact in the microswitches, so clean/replace. Imagine you have a bunch of resistors to generate a voltage level unique to each function in order to feed an ADC... bad contact can mess that up. Inadequate debouncing is not going to help either.

Do I look like a magician? You think I can wave my magic wand and say abracadabra and magically an Akai VCR will appear on my bench? I can only fix what I have and I don't have an Akai VCR but would like one to take apart. Now, was it a real Akai or a Mitsubishi, as Mitsubishi made the later Akai units, and Akai made the early ones.
Video heads do not typically become magnetized, and just putting the machine into record for a second would neutralize any charge that they could pick up.
Ahh the good old mode switch failure. I've had machines the that play just fine, then suddenly just rewind on it's own, just like it's posessed by a ghost :-D
Hello, I just came across your channel and I enjoy it so far. However I have a question regarding eaten/chewed tapes. Can they still play? Are they worth keeping still? I bought a tape that happened to have its film already pulled out and slight crinkles in hopes of fixing it. I was able to wind the film back in the tape. Also, are there any VCRs out there that don't eat tapes at all? I enjoy vhs tapes very much and want to keep collecting and watching them. Thank you
A machine that is operating correctly won't eat tapes. Yes you can play a tape that was eaten but depending on the damage may clog the head. At the point of damage the picture will be disrupted. In most cases minor tape damage will not harm the machine

My two VCRs used to eat up tapes as well. My VCRs are two identical Toshiba's which had their load switches replaced because they chewed up tapes.

Great repair video, I think you'll find that the channel and record buttons are behind the flap on the left of the machine
What was your favourite vcr to work on when you worked in the shop?

Coffee filter paper is really good for cleaning video heads.
Do you know how long a cleaning will last? This is what my vcr is doing that it thinks the tape is still in the vcr.
A cleaning will last untill a tape sheds oxide and clogs heads again. 1 bad tape is all it takes.

This looks like an absolute MINIMUM type of build. Look at all the 'waste space' on the left of the chassis!

Probably the mechanism is slightly out of mechanical timing.

You can always tell when it is the cheapest, most bare-bones VCR available when it has plastic tape guides.
