- Another one of these all in one piece of shite combo VCR / DVD recorders. A real pain in the ass to do any service on due to the way they put them together.

I closed my business in early 2008 after 4 decades of service; " warranty, commercial, and consumer repair". I really enjoyed the early years when it was profitable, later you were spending more time stripping units down which eventually made servicing impossible to run, now I dabble on my own time. I use to love serving until the cheap crap hit the market, now I restore old equipment on request.
My Toshiba packed up and wouldn't play tapes, I followed your tutorial and stripped it right down and now it works! Thank you, you are a genius!
If your combo was a Samsung I'd tell you to bin it and not bother. Samsung and LG DVD-VHS combos are throwaway junk from experience. Give me Panasonic any day. More reliable and better design.
In your videos I am amazed at how complicated those VCR's are. I have to admire your tenacity in proceeding. With that many moving parts being made as cheap as they could it's a marvel they ever worked at all.

The exact same mechanism was used in my 2004 Philips VCR (not a DVD combo). Mine was crappy from the factory. The linear audio had a lot of wow & flutter since day 1. I will hang onto my 1980s JVCs and Panasonics instead.

Well that made for a fine way to spend a lunch break. I have one about the same age - looks identical but mine has a built in hard drive as well as the DVD. The vcr part on mine is also bust... if I ever do take it apart chances are it'll never be re-assembled and end up as a bag of bits in the bin. But good to know where the mode switch is! And what a total pain it is to get to. I'll need to be bored with a lot of time on my hands🤣

Also, in case anyone's gotten this far, Toshiba actually IS pronounced "Toe-She-Bah". It's of Japanese origin, and that's how To て, Shi しand Ba ば are pronounced in its native tongue.
Granted, that doesn't make them any better of a product.
That is always how I pronounced it until the toshiba parts guy corrected me and said it was pronounced " Tosh ib- ah" not "toe she bah"
To me the name should be pronounced "to shit a" as much of their stuff was.
I say that as I have 2 toshiba dvd recorders running archiving tapes as I write this.
A D-VR7 and DV422 running. The DVr7 recording a VHS tape and the 422 a DV tape using the firewire. They are truly workhorses and mine have burned several hundred, perhaps 1000 disks without fail. I have a second DVR7 for when the one I am using craps out for the last time.

(I know in actual Japanese the first syllable is an extended vowel but that doesn't really exist much in English phonology)
This VCR is look the same as Funai's VCR from China the one it is not designed to service this device at all.
I have another one of these pieces of shit I gave up on a few years ago. Going to take another run at it for shits and giggles.
I hate the throw away ethos prevalent nowadays but I have to admit that fixing items like this must be a real challenge (as much mentally as physically)! At least you were being paid for the toil!
I was on this one about 2 hours which is a long time to clean a mode encoder.

Nowadays, apart from the odd specialist shop and of course hobbyists, help is pretty thin on the ground. RUclips has proved to be a great source of info for myself and your channel is definitely one of the best.
that machine is a nightmare to get apart. such a simple but great repair, i have a similar machine i haven't used in years with the same issue, maybe i should try cleaning the mode switch.
I agree ? But their good to have to record your old vhs tapes to DVDs? You should just go buy one cheap at a salvation army or a Goodwill? Then to go to all that trouble to fix it?😁
I have a similar one. I think some of them had digital tuners built in. They were not cheap when new. I worked on a client’s Sony DVD recorder vhs combo and saw the DVD player in the Sony was Toshiba branded while Toshiba’s DVD player in that combo had Panasonic branding. I don’t understand how brands just don’t make their own stuff if they can. I’ve seen that with Samsung and LG too.

My betting is that the customer was very pleased. I fixed a similar machine for a customer who was transferring homemade videos, weddings christenings etc to DVD for safekeeping! The fault? An unnoticed sticky sweet pushed through the front flap by a child...! I spent hours cleaning off the goo with q-tips and a little warm water. One thing I noticed how flimsy the drive and loading mechanisms are and the take-up clutch between the spools look like they could not handle a 3-hour tape.
How the mighty have fallen. There was a day when Tokyo Shibaura Denki (Trade name Toshiba - Toe-shee-ba) made stuff for other companies - transistors, component parts, sub assemblies, and complete TV sets. They officially changed their corporate name to Toshiba in the late 70s. They were one of the few outfits that licensed and produced Beta vcrs in the 80s. They never really impressed me as their goods seemed to die quickly after purchase. (They made terrible capacitors.) I had one of their color TVs back in the 60s. Great when new but turned into a tube eater then started popping electrolytics by 1970. In 2001 they outsourced all their consumer lines to a company in Thailand (and later China.)
When I used to deal with them they answered the phone. "Tosh-shiba" and I was corrected by the japanese parts guy that was the correct pronouncement of the name. Not toe-she-ba.
We used to sell their products. They had good stereo components and tvs in the 80s. Their beta vcrs left something to be desired. They had soft heads. They produced s bloody good picture for awhile but would burn through heads quickly. I had a TV I used as a camera monitor for years and years until the tube faded away to nothing. Had severe burn, worse than the rca in the shop. (If you remember how bad that is when I have shown it.) I have a 14" set around here somewhere I used as a camera monitor that has some screen burn. That seems to be a common problem here. Burned crt screens, burned plasma screen. I have a plasma that's so badly burned with the "GLOBAL" TV logo and all their stationary text on the right side of the screen on the morning news. It is the plasma with the cracked screen I changed a buffer board on about 5 years ago. Only watch 1 channel on it as a rule, the morning news and they have done a number on it. You should have seen a computer monitor (both an amber and a color cga) that I had on early machines that were scorched pretty bad from stationary display. I ran a bbs back in the 80s on fidonet. Front door was the program that ran and sat there waiting for an oncoming call. I ran an netmail/echomail node and there were times where the node was sitting for hours processing large volumes email hotmail for distribution to other nodes (this was before the internet if you can imagine that, where hobby bbs would dial each other up and forward messages around the country) I had a medium size 4 line system. 4 286 computers networked together with lantastic, and a whopping 100 mega of hard drive space spread across 4 machines. 3 machines with 20 mega and the 386 had 40 mega. 4 us robotics host dual standard modems.

Years later I ran into other quirks of Japanese names. Eiki was one. Guess how that was pronounced?
Toyota was originally "Toyoda", the actual name of the founding family. They changed it after they started shipping cars to the US.
I remember a advert that had the catchphrase "hello tosh got a new toshiba", it must of been approved by the company high up so i assume tosh-she-ba is correct.
@@davidrockefella They told me it was closer to tosh-E-ba. But there is a kicker. There are regional dialects in Japan that can slightly alter things.
We tend to apply our spelling rules to Japanese words, especially names. We say NY-con for Nikon but they pronounce it nee-kon.
Japanese is fairly imprecise and the same sound will mean different things in different contexts. They use gestures to try to clarify speech for that reason.
I spent nearly 3 decades subtitling Japanese programs and I would never try to converse with a person in that language. Too many pitfalls.

Yup. The japanese parts guy at toshiba always pronounced it "tosh sib a" and would "correct" people that pronounced it "toe she ba" but as you said accents play a big part in pronunciation of different words.
Just ask a chinese person to say the word "lemon" and it will come out "remon"
I have a Magnavox combo like that from 2007. I use it to copy VHS tapes (and TV shows) from another player because the tape deck doesn't work in the combo. The combo will insert the tape, deck shuts off. Tape gets caught inside. I don't want to fool with it, because it's the only DVD recorder I have left. (Not counting the computer)
The Magnavox will not run the DVD with the cover off. Some kind of interlock.
Great job fixing that problem. There''s nothing like experience in recognizing the likely causes. I always had a hard time not having left over screws. I don't know how you do it.
If you could do a review again with those rear view cameras for the car while running over that Toshitma vcr combo , that would be good for a laugh !
Well this is a customer machine. I have one just like it though so perhaps I will dig it out and take a look at it.
The only thing made by toshiba inside this POS is the badge, oh wait....
You should also be aware that Toshiba made some of the very best equipment back in the day, including their amplifiers/televisions. Also real Toshiba equipment is made in Japan, NOT china.

I have an identical unit that the VHS is also fuxed on. I looked at it before but my heart wasn't into fixing it. I think I will take another stab at the one I have. I have been just using it as a DVD recorder.
I know what you mean about VHS, in its prime it was never really any good, VHS is a very finicky media, and of course one tiny thing wrong with the player and its goodbye treasured memories. I mean the way they were built just got worse and worse, in the end they had 5 buttons and no bloody vfd screen, play pause stop record rewind, thats how cheap they became as you say. the only thing i would ever use a VCR for is recording HI-FI stereo music on a very decent sony or ferguson machine, the last run of vhs machines were so bad chances are they were DOA, the transports were made of paper thin metal, everything was hard wired, the heads lasted 2 years at best and the circuitry itself was piss poor quality, and they usually gave a very bad picture.
Just did another one of these with more problems, and like this one it lives.
Another great video, glad to hear you are still at it, do you have any videos on fixing the felt pads on the spindle brakes? My JVC SVHS deck is flinging tape when I stop during fast forwarding. I can do a quick ffwd for a couple of seconds to prevent tapes from being eaten but it's quite annoying.
All the DVD VCR combos are a pain in the butt .. the last one I repaired had same prob mode switch which is hidden in the absolute core of the whole machine and it was so well hidden I didn't even know where to find it at first .. at least 3 hidden screws hidden under flat cables and stickers no service manual and a lot of swearing .. this cannot be accidental the engineers putting a common failing component in the very bottom of the device .. also removing the oxidation on the decoder tracks can be tricky .. it is almost as bad as swapping a rear oil seal in a pickup .. You actually showed the manufacture date on the back. This machine was made in October 2010
his other Toshiba he attempted to fix on 3/13/2018 was made in Aug 2008.
Fixed my Philips combo this way. It was a pain, but now it works. I can't believe I got it back together.

Thanks so much for this video ! I managed to fix mine doing exactly as you described. It was an absolute nightmare.. i was sure I wasnt going to be able to reassembe it. (Im not a technician at all) first time ever doing it and with your video iv fixed it..cant believe it....i didnt have the cleaner you had so i used 91% isopropyl alchol instead..it was filthy!
This Toshiba's interior is excatly same as in brand name Magnavox witch was repaired by Norcal. Main problem in power supply is quit often 4700uF cap. My humble thanks for vid. 👍
I hear all these other channels mentioned and i have rarely if ever been on any of them.
And that's exactly how I repair these Funai built combos. Taking all this apart isn't really that frustrating for me, I actually enjoy taking all that apart.
I prefer the Panasonic units where the deck just lifts out.

@@12voltvids I agree with you on Panasonic being a bit more 'serviceman-friendly' in terms of their design. Ease of access. LG and Samsung are (in my view) the worst for serviceability with awful layouts, tied wiring, abundance of screws and clips, plus in some cases parts are hard to obtain.

A lot of stripping down and re-assembly on a (very good) hunch. I've never worked on anything quite as unserviceable as that.
Funny, because I have one of these too, and I got frustrated a few years ago when I saw how it was built and said "fuk it" and tossed it into the storage unit to use just as a DVD recorder. After pissing around with this one I figured I would give my unit a shot, and guess what. Same fault. That video will be up later, as my unit had a mechanical problem with the front loader as well.

I have one if those. Mine is color with a 255 color display. That makes great photo quality pictures.
i own the same machine and i decided to not replace the screws that connect the transport and the main pcb together so if my mode switch happens to need cleaning again it is a lot less headaches to fix it it failed after 6 months of ownership but i still use vhs machines from the early 90s the picture quality is much better in the vintage machines
When some Oldest Models if are be expect of Error's (not of Rewind while Picture as TDK's Modern Tapes) as PAL version (DRV-A26..) then are be Normal Error Function for Simply step.

That is amazing, you are really clever. I have a Toshiba D-VR18DT which is very similar to this model that you are working on, with exactly that same problem with tapes (DVD is fine). I'd love to have a go at looking at it myself and do what you have done, but there's no way I could , I'd ruin it as I haven't got a clue😂. But well done my friend. Best wishes
I still watch films on VHS! I also listen to cassettes.
Most of these problems are caused by worn and slipping drive belts.
VHS Visual Horrible Shit. Picture quality of VHS sucks. Cassettes are tacky little plastic things.
8-track cartridges are more unreliable than compact audio cassettes in many respects, and are also harder to repair when the tape inside them breaks. I tackled a few of these years ago and regretted it. Never again.
VHS and compact audio cassettes - while being of low quality compared to modern digital formats, they were considered the ants pants 30-35 years ago. Nowadays most people go for higher quality which standard VHS and audio tapes simply can't offer.

I agree about some things just not worth the disassemble and assemble process. Are products like that deliberately designed that way so people don’t work on them?

So, I have just finished doing this exact repair. Much thanks to 12voltsvids for this very, very helpful video! Now, I am trying to put things back together. I did keep track of which screws came from which part of the machine, BUT unfortunately, that doesn't tell me exactly which screw goes where! As a rule of thumb, where do you use machine screws, and where do you use the spiral type screws? And what are the washer headed spiral screws normally used for? :(
30:00 You're a better man than many there fella, as crappy as that thing is i think temptation would be to refit 4 or 5 screws (each corner and one in middle to stop the base flapping) and call it done.
the way you said Toshiba... it makes me want to punch a hole into my old Toshiba laptop. Also, you should see the cheap shit Magnavox made around 2011. The tapes look horrible, frequently gets eaten, and can't properly eject sometimes.

My money was on the loading belt, I've seen these symptoms after it slips and doesn't have the torque to move all the mech into place! Another thing learned! Thanks! VCR.s are indeed Horrible to work on, especially the older ones with multiple boards! Some wouldn't operate unless two sections of the board are closed circuit; and the main mech was the bridge! So I think I'll skip them for now. Ha ha.

@@12voltvids Oh I have no idea LOL - I thought I saw you using that universal remote with the unit.... so I assumed you had a code. Maybe those remotes do it auto?
Sometimes the universal remotes have codes for your brand, but the functionality of the universal remotes can be limited. Also, that means you would have to purchase a universal remote.
@ That universal remote is for my cable box and I was using that to control my Panasonic TV, I used the original remote for this. I was actually given a Toshiba DR430 DVD recorder because the guy lost the remote. I said I had one, and he wanted to buy my remote. I said "Sorry Charlie" but I would be happy to take your DVD recorder that you can't use off your hands, so he gave it to me.

Finally caught up all your videos related to Toshiba D-VR7. Great videos. This popped up in my mind as a non technician with a lazy solution, do you think blowing air duster into the mode switch might solve the problem for a short term solution?
Needs to come apart and be cleaned. It's not dust it's oxidation.
go to amazon and look at the prices of VHS players , since they are not made anymore the value for never opened in the box ones have gone up with some at $1k prices.
Svhs decks and beta decks can get pricey, but run of the mill vhs are not worth anything. They have a dozen down at value village for 10.00

I banished mine to the storage unit, but after fixing this one, hauled mine out and what do ya know got mine going too. Mine had 2 faults.
I've got one of these machines. The tape ends and the unit goes into a high speed rewind , stops, and then is supposed to take up a bit of slack before ejecting, but the take up reel won't turn. The capstan keeps spinning with the pinch roller engaged and causes the tape to get eaten. The take up reel seems to possibly get stuck, as the belt turns the pulley, but the clutch slips. I've cleaned the mode switch which I thought would be the most likely issue and cleaned all the sensors. All the normal things seen in your videos. Haven't seen an issue like this in any of vcr repairs. Any help would be great! Thanks!

Hey I have 3 of these and 3 straight dvd recorders. They have never let me down. 2 I bought and the rest were free.
@@12voltvids I had a Toshiba CRT TV, It stopped work for some ungodly reason. Sometimes Toshiba stuff just stops working and the reason why it stops working is so stupid.

Two Days Later: One of the 610's I was able to fix cleaning the mode switch. This must be an common issue across that product line.. VCR works fine now.. Thanks for the tip.. Second VCR powers on then powers right back off. Clock/Counter display remains lit.. Any thoughts on this one ? You ever see that problem on this series of Toshiba VCR's ?
The Japanese typically use two letter syllables. So this should be pronounced. "Two-She-Ba" . Toyota is "Two-Yo-Ta" not Toy-Ohtaa..
For mine, it stopped eating tapes just by taking the roof off. I don't even know what the obstruction was.

Hi, i got Toshiba D-VR5SC VCR + DVD recorder combo. It's not reading and spinning the Discs at all. I can se laser light turns on but the motor doesnt move to spin the discs .. the tray is working is fine to load/unload/eject. help needed.
This is why I think that having dvd and vcr separate is better
True but these do a really good job and they are simple to use. I use one of the ones i have to dub VHS to DVD all the time.

Lucky the mode switch is intact , my Panasonic combo with S-VHS socket fell to bits as well as a metal plate fell off when I lifted the deck up .
People pay £200 + second hand on flebay as these decks do a lot .

It's sad to see how complicated these units have become to repair. I've been working on an RCA vcr from the mid 90's and was wondering if you could help me diagnose an issue. I had to replace a burnt out motor driver chip for the loading motor which got the vcr working. However, the audio that comes from any tape played also has a background sound like plastic film being run over a record needle. This is through the speakers and not background noise from the unit. The sound is also slightly muffled.
Andrew Video If this is a HiFi stereo video unit, try switching to mono audio, if that solves it there is a high chance that the video heads are worn, if it is mono, check that the pinch roller is in good condition. The static head nearest the pinch roller, contains the mono audio head and the control track head, you will see the heads as little black squares top and bottom, give those a clean They are not as fragile as the video heads.

Yep the construction is a pain in the ass, i saw the same type of madness in the basic vcr only machines.
But at the end you could buy a vcr for £30!! , that's next to nothing.
I've repaired a few of the single pcb types, the whole thing has to come out to repair the power supply, Yep it's on the vcr board.
I really really don't like the psu being on the vcr board.

My dad's Toshiba D-VR610 stopped working (the DVD works, just not the VCR). He said it ate a video tape. When I took it apart, I couldn't get the loading mechanism to work at all. It seems to be jammed or stuck and will not go back to the point of dropping into the playing deck at all. Any suggestions besides sell all his collection on ebay?

Dave, i have a Tosiba SD/V296 VCR/DVD combo from 8/2009 and the vcr works but the dvd player doesn't work. You might think the laser died well you are wrong. I accidentally hit this thing on somethibg hard in december 2017, but... When i had the top off of it for a long period of time, it stopped working for awhile! REACT!!!!! Now when i leave the top on and if i keep trying it will eventually work again. But i believe something in the dvd portion is stopping the laser from reading the disc or the potentiometer may be out of alignment. Its SO WEIRD AND STUPID!!!!!! This Random youtube user has a Philips Funai VCR/DVD Combo and the vcr is fine BUT THE DVD PLAYER DOES THE EXACT SAME SYMPTOM!!!!! NOT KIDDING! HE EVEN SHOWED PROOF BACK ON 7/18/19!!!
NEWS!!!!! I TRIED PLAYING AN AUDIO CD AND YOU'RE NOT GONNA BELIEVE THIS!!!!! IT CAN STILL PLAY CDS YET IT REFUSES TO PLAY DVDS. THE DVD POTENTIOMETER IS PROBABLY MISALIGNED....
To fix this on mine I had to get to the switch which is buried deeply on the front right under the closest right most area of the cassette. It was easily cleaned but it is time to do it again. Switch mode control must be cleaned every few years due to oxidation and is a lousy design! All those damn screws! Oh the humanity!

ABSOLUTELY..I did one pretty close in design as this one..mode switch..Ran for about 2 months before developing a new problem. It's still in the parts box...NEVER AGAIN!
so they thought it was a good idea to downgrade from the optical mode switches back to the electric ones
It was probably cheaper in production and because they die just a few days after warranty, they sell two VCRs instead of one to the same customer.
i had a similar British Combo VCR/DVD which had a Hard Disk Drive built in which was also a Toshiba make, once the HDD failed the whole unit shut down, ended up scrapping it because it wasn't worth fixing,
I own a similar, older toshiba. Can't remember the model number, it might have a 9 in it. Maybe a t... The construction seems to be much better than this one, but from the looks of this video I sincerely hope it doesn't break down.
Did the DVD get fixed too? It was spinning without control at the end of this video by the looks of it.

Great video. I have this machine - my mode switch works, vhs plays tapes, the DVD will draw in a disc but it spins "loading" for about a minute then "disc error please eject the disc". Have tried several store bought dad's. There's a light click sound every 6-8 seconds while loading. It sounds to me like something may be stuck

I haven't had to get into the dvd drive on either of my units but it is entiey possible that the start of disk switch is not being read. There is a switch that detects that the laser is in the home position. If it doesn't detect the laser will attempt to run home. Until the switch activates it won't attempt to read.

Harry Rickenbach I think the Sylvania VCR’s were made by Orion, there are a few different versions of the switch, but if you do a search for Orion, or Matsui mode switch you should find them for sale even new old stock.

@@mrsemifixit You can clean a mode switch to pristine condition with a pencil eraser (rubber). I use that method to clean oxidation spots from silver coins. Turns out, it works with mode switches amazingly. After "the brown" is cleaned off, I use regular contact spray.
It won't break down the corrosion, DeoxIt is great for that. Save the alcohol for your heads, rollers,and sensors. 👌 Amazon & some home stores carry DeoxIt.
No lubricants. Will clean, and then oxygen will attack and oxidize the contacts. Cleaners like deoxit and nutrol have seal oils to coat the contacts and keep evil oxygen away.

I used to have a Samsung DVD player/recorder back in the early 2000's. Instead of tapes, you simply recorded your shows directly to discs. I don't know if they still make those anymore. Most people now record shows onto a hard drive.
No they don't. They are pretty valuable these days for the archive businesses. They go for more than they sold for new.

You're talking a computer drive. Using computer for archiving is too much work. I use a stand alone recorder. Video in disk out. No farting around capturing, compressing and burning.
It pays to learn more about electronic equipment.
I bought my last VCR in 2001 and the trend of "We don't care anymore, we make it easy to put together in the factory by robots or by people pretending to be robots and that's it, service schmervice". had already begun. But what you you expect? It was $89 or something and I know they went all the way down to $30 if I remember correctly. My first VCR in 1993 was something like $900 and my dad's first VCR in 1984 was $1200.

I always wondered what it would be like to live in Canada. With all the problems we are having in the U.S., going there seems to look better each day. Our problem is affording the move. I personally would have no idea how we could do that. My sister and I are low income and live below the poverty line. It makes me wonder if this country will survive past November. I doesn't seem to be actually getting worse other than media hype. Our biggest worry is healthcare. The politicians seem to want to gouge out all forms of socialism. People obviously have no idea what that is. Military is never seen as socialism for some reason. At any rate, I wouldn't mind paying more in taxes for a better quality of life. There is such a huge phobia about people getting help that shouldn't here. It's better just to not worry about that. Systems aren't perfect, but they do strive to be better at what they so.
Never lived in the us, have no plans to. Too nice here in canada. Yes the cost of living here is high. Housing prices in stratosphere here where i am. Tiny house will set you back over a million here in my neighbourhood. We are all millionaires on paper. Free health care for all. Have a friend battling cancer. Has had 3 surgeries in past 2 years. All he paid for was parking. Taxes relatively high, but that us what pays for what we expect in return. Good policing, fire protection and health care. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
These machines are not worth repairing. They are absolute junk. Not worth the time and money. You can find them on Ebay (fully operational) for less than $50-100.
