I have this watch in the red dial. I love it. It has a a beautifully vibrant dial with orange contrasting hands on the subdials that really give it that retro feel. I did put it on a chocolate rally strap, immediately. That really made it pop! Awesome review, by the way. Keep up the great work! 😉👍
These misaligned lume dots just came to my attention and now I cannot unsee it. Just why? What were they thinking? There are already white stripes on the indices - why couldn't they fill it with lume. The dial would be cleaner then.
I got this very same watch and I am very happy with this. Orient made it exactly the 70's look and quality but I did not expected too highly of this but all in all, I love the style and feeling of it. Plus, solar charge is amazing. I have Seitona panda as well. This orient solar panda is as lovely as Seitona to me.
I have one with a blue background, my niece bought it 5 years ago at the Suvaco gallery in Japan. I don't think there are many copies of this model here in Brazil.
Thanks for another great review. Agree it's a handsome quartz chrono with a retro flair. I could live with all of the nits you identified except for the misaligned lume pips. That jumped right out at me even before you mentioned it in your video. It's just poor quality control and not what I would expect from Orient.
Great video as always. I like the novelty of a solar chrono, but not sure if it is enough to pull me away from other chronos in that price range. Thanks again.
I paid $80 for a regular panda dial, the dress watch without any lume and a sapphire crystal. I like the neo-70s line, though. And I always have an eye out for them on ebay; just haven't been able to nab one yet. If Orient would drop their prices on their neo-70s line, and other chronos, by just $50 they would be so much more competitive. Especially the solar watches. Also, it's weird that your dots don't line up. A small thing, but a necessity in my mind. It's cool there is lume, though. I'm surprised how limiting it is for mine to not have any lume. It basically makes it a daytime only watch. Great review! And great production value, as usual.
In retrospect, I think the Panda would have been a better choice. At least easier to photograph. That grey dial looks fantastic in the right light. But it's also hard to get just right.
i really like your great visual comparisions with other brands in particular the lume shots....as an Orient fan i have lusted after the panda version.... excellent help for my decisions...thanks
Glad to help. The lume comparisons are my favorite thing to do. Plus I think they are the best way to show lume. Cameras are different, and setting can be changed. So best to have a direct comparison too. Especially when you want to talk about longevity.
Very well done review. I have 4 Orients (Ray II,Triton,Orient Star Seeker GMT & Classic pocket) with which I am very happy, so I am a fan. I already have 10 other chronographs, so I have most styles covered and probably will not be buying many more. This Orient is similar to one of my Citizens, with the 1/5 sec. timing second hand, but missing the tachymeter. The big benefit that I see with a 1/5 sec. timing second hand is that tachymeter readings can be directly read precisely versus higher precision (1/20, 1/100, 1/1000 sec.) chronographs where the timing second hand moves in one second increments with the fractional seconds displayed on sub-dials. With chronographs in general, I am finding that I prefer having the large second hand performing the double duty of showing the running seconds and timing seconds versus the more traditional style having running seconds on a sub-dial and only using the large seconds hand for timing. It does mean that there is an additional step to enter timing mode, but I have not found that to be a problem.
Relative Time Several months ago, after reading several revues, I was all set to buy a blue Triton. Then, they were out of stock almost everywhere and the prices went way up. So I decided to get a blue Ray II, which I like very much. This was my first dive watch. I then bought a Citizen Promaster Diver (BN0191-55L), which is nice. Several weeks ago, when the Triton came back in stock, I got the Triton. It is my favorite of the three watches. I have a 7.5 inch wrist, so the Triton fits very well. People with much smaller wrists, might prefer the Ray II. After having the power reserve meter, I would not want a mechanical watch without one. I was very used to having quartz accuracy on my modern watches and some somewhat hesitant to buy a mechanical after reading some other people’s accuracy results. I am very pleased with the accuracy of all four of my Orients. They are performing better than or at a similar level to my wife’s Rolex. The Triton provides everything I want in a dive watch. I could afford to spend way more for a dive watch. I do not see the point.
First thing first you've done great job again. My personal feelings about the watch are 1.The 2nd hand should be in a different color, in this watch white, blue or red 2.From the price-point it is a bit higher than I expected. Should be ~$200 at max 3.The bracelet is my main disappointment. Better is the metal rally strap or leather rally. Or combination of both in different models. But I think 70s chronograph should include rally strap. By the way, you must open the case and rotate the outer scaled dial to clockwise a bit.
I wish there was a solar version of the Flightmaster. Although I'd like to review one at some point. if nothing else then to go over how to use the bezel.
Relative Time that'd be helpful- I've sussed the rudimentary functions of the slide rule bezel, but I'm sure many of us would benefit from a proper tutorial 👍 - & yes, I wish it was solar too. Cheers from Cambridgeshire England 👍👍
I think it's more of an issue with the hour indicators and the chapter ring. They seemed to be lined up together, but maybe a few degrees rotated to the left. Might be easy to fix. Although someone should have caught that.
Interesting watch and good review (it's the only video with the grey dial I found). Do you still remember where you got the brown nylon and the black strap you showed in the beginning from?
I'm thinking about it. If nothing else partly pay for a Dan Henry. Shoot me an email if you are. I'll decide later this week if I want to. shane@relative-time.com
Great review!! I've been eyeballing this type of watch for a while now, and appreciate an honest review. The model I want to purchase at some point will be the Neo 70's Horizon # WV0021TY (two tone green dial). The design as well as being solar really has me on the hook. I just need to save up a few more pennys!!
Yes, it does have the alarm function. I like having an alarm function on some of these watches, but for the life of me, I can't understand why they do a 12 hr alarm that will go off every 12 hrs, instead of a 24 hr alarm. So, if I want to have an alarm for 2pm, it will also go off at 2am.......while I'm trying to sleep. I suppose I can arm and disarm the alarm every day, but a 24 hr alarm just makes so much more sense to me. I usually just use those 12 hr dials as a second time zone function instead of alarms.
I think the dots are fine, just the hour indicator thingy and the chapter ring are off. Maybe a few degrees to the right. Still annoying, but may be fixable. Everyone else who owns one has commented their neo 70s are lined up. So hopefully that helps.
Another great vid, Shane! Quite a few issues come up with this one as well, v interesting. In principle, I don't have an issue with paying a JDM premium, assuming the overall package still makes sense. I've owned a Junghans Solar Chrono for over a year, and tbh it's not the "solar thing" which has made me keep it. It's all the other normal criteria, not least of which I love wearing it! My main concern which you highlighted tho is the misalignment which is quite poor. I really thought Orient were better than that. Hopefully, you'd be able to get it sorted out, but how did it get past QC? Sampling will probably allow some through I guess, but still....
This should work. www.blusharkstraps.com/collections/cordura-watch-bands/products/cordura-armadillo-gray-watch-band-strap I had a link to it in the description, but looks like Blushark changed it. I think there is also a Barton Sailcloth that looks similar to this too.
For that price, they should include solid links and a milled clasp not to mention sapphire crystal.(maybe I'm expecting too much) It's a nice looking watch but I guess it really depends on how often you would wear a dressy chronograph. I purchased a Parnis Daytona homage, which is now my everyday watch. I dress up for work and so it looks good on whatever I wear. Owning a mecha quartz is nice. I never have to question its accuracy. I had a Starking automatic which I sent back to Starking for repairs. I was considering finding a good solar quartz but I was never sure how long the batteries on them lasted. You had mentioned maybe 10-20 years but I guess it depends on which solar quartz movement you are looking at. Also, is the battery on a solar quartz expensive to replace?
Might be expecting a little too much with the milled clasp and solid end links. 😎 Do you have the model for that Parnis? Well, it's like anything electronic. Sometimes you get lucky, others you don't. A citizen thinks they should last 20 years nowadays. In the past, some people would report 10. I think the battery is $30-40 for the part. Not sure how much to have someone else replace it. In my own experience, i had a Seiko Kinetic that went 8 years before it's capacitor needed to be replaced with a new battery. I remember it being around $40 and taking about 40 min to fix myself. And that's without knowing what I was doing. Meanwhile, I also have an old Pulsar Solar watch (owned by Seiko) that I think will be 21 this year. I don't think it last a full 6 months on a charge, but it still gets at least 3. Otherwise still running fine.
I need to add a new solar watch to my collection. With regard to fit, finish, and durability how would you say this watch compares to Citizen's Eco - Drive?
I think I just got unlucky with the dial a little misaligned, but the Dan Henery is a fine looking watch. I'll try to buy one soon to check out. I think it has a better look for me, a little more military and casual.
Another informative no nonsense video. Thanks. Nice looking watch but those misaligned dots!... Good Gawd how does a watch leave the factory looking like that?
The dots not aligned and it would drive me nuts to own these otherwise good looking Orient, I love this brand and I’m surprised it has this issue. I will research other colors like panda to see if it has same misaligned issue.
Interesting watch. Was going to mention Dan Henry; but you beat me to that one. Just going to say it, watches with misalignment are ok. If I can tell the time, it clearly works.
I have the Orient Neo '70 FUG1U004V9. A quartz piece with a beautiful North to South Tokyo stripes dial, poor lume and about the same ok-ish bracelett. I enjoy it so much.
I just got this watch 9/15/23. Its a gorgeous watch but IMO the hands are hard to see with all the silver and grey. Also the dial is very busy. The band feels very cheap and the lume is almost non existent. I only paid $117.00 USD so im going to keep it. I do think Orient couldve put lume on the bottom of the hour and minute hands. That wouldve made it much easier to see the time. Also the date window is so small you can't really even see it. For my first Orient, I'm not nearly as impressed as i thought i would be.
Great video. The dots are way off. I Believe this is using a Seiko movement. Seiko uses a 24 hour sub dial, and it has a sweeping Chronograph seconds hand.
Relative Time thanks. I believe it’s the VK 175. It’s a regular quartz, but it solar and has a nice sweeping Chrono seconds hand. I have a Seik Prospex Diver that has this movement.
personally i love its bracelet a lot, at least its look, the brushing and tapering. mine is a white dial which i regarded as the most beautiful option ... until i see your review of the grey😅
The grey was really hard to capture. I have a bunch of shots I couldn't use. Dial didn't look quite right, or too bright or too dark. The bracelet looks good, and I like the tapering. I wish the mako bracelet did that.
Request: You should review a Citizen Signature Grand Classic NB0040-58A. It's a very nice automatic with Miyota movement. I got one and am very impressed with its quality. retail for around 900 and can be had for close to 500.
Nice looking watch. I'll put it on my list to check out. Although will be a while, I've bought too many others in the last few months. So have to get through them, and maybe sell some first.
I loved Pandas when I was kid. I remember going to the San Diego zoo and seeing a breeding pair that were on loan from China. That's also where I learned that one of the reasons they were going extinct, was that they were often too lazy to mate. At least in captivity. Always a fun topic to learn as kid.
A little. It's more of a dress chrono, which I think always makes things harder to read. Panda version might be better. I'll probably sell this and get a Dan Henry 1963. Shouldn't be any contrast issues with that.
Agreed. It looks as though the indices and the Chapter ring are lined up nicely with each other. But they may be off a few degrees from the dial itself.
Those misaligned lume pips are just horrible. I will be sure to look for that when I purchase mine. For my personal needs, I have to have the battery version, but your review does note that some are not solar - thanks for mentioning that.
Don't really like chronographs but I've been looking at the 🐼 version for a while, and this one looks great. Normally I'm quite forgiving with little issue's, but those misaligned dots though. I love Orient and clearly a QC issue (ive not seen or at least noticed on other neo 70s), and perhaps is a one off. But like you I expect more from Orient. But still it's a great watch. Not sure I'd be willing to pay the amount it's selling for though
I think I just got one that's off. It looks more like the hour indicators and the chapter ring (which are lined up together) are a little off, not the dial. So it might be easily fixed if I open it up.
White striped long counterbalance on the minute and hour hand? Terrible decision, very confusing to look at. Maybe I'm just too familiar with dive watches, but legibility is a must. Tachymeter isn't very practical sure, but it's one of those quirks I really look for in a chronograph, especially a retro-styled racing chrono. Daytona and Speedmaster know their role and are perfectly designed for it, this one... just not so much.
I just got the panda. For 100-150 it would be ok but not 250. It should not be called a panda in some lights it looks White but that is definitely brushed metal. Sub dials are blue not black. Insides of the lugs are sharp. It doesn't look like much care goes into these at all. It almost looks Stamped Out and assembled. I really don't think a person ever touches it. Even the brushing on the case is in a circular pattern. like a wheel just comes down on top of it as it goes down the line. From a distance it looks great but the closer and longer you look the cheaper it looks. Compared to the Orient Bambino I got for $150 less I expected better. I was planning on getting the Mako USA II White dial next but now I'm not sure. I think this one will be going back. I paid the same price JDM Seiko 5 sport totally blows this out of the water on finishing. Had it not been discontinued when I bought the Seiko it would have been $100 cheaper then the Orient.
Orient please make this in a 45mm size, (w/out crown) since we don't all suffer from bitch-wrist-syndrome. Also the lume dots should be aligned accurately & near the outer perimeter. Thanks in advance!
LOL... I'm, not sure wrist size even matters. I've had guys with larger wrists tell me how nothing should be over 40mm, and I've had guys with smaller wrists tell me they prefer 45+. Most of it is just what someone thinks looks good.
@@RelativeTime did you know that Orient Neo 70s panda dial is only limited edition release and can be a collectors item in the near future as per many watch experts and consultants? That's why I keep Mt orient neo70 in great condition because it will worth a thousand dollars in a near future
@@RelativeTime try to go on any Orient watch store and ask for that model and you will having hardtime to find it brother, 😂 the reason you can buy it from online is because the goal of orient is to sell all of that limited edition model,
From 70 s till now ! I am checking the Orient watches and like the way that they are as a alternative to Seiko and Citizen , But they have problem with the design !! Good quality but poor design
I haven't looked in a while, but I assume they are higher. All the JDM watches are. Especially some of the Casio Oceanus. The S100 models were a couple hundred. Now $500
Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
I just received a Japanese domestic market version for $130 including tax and shipping. I really do like this watch and for the price it is a fantastic deal. Everything lines up correctly on mine. And yes, the bracelet is terrible. I swapped It for a different metal bracelet I bought on Amazon and now it looks perfect. Even though it is 42 mm i'd think it wears more like a 40. For me I like the fact that this particular watch is a quartz. Very nice piece.
Thanks Shane. Just bought this with the white dial. You’re killing me man haha. Every watch you review and like is exactly my taste too.
I have this watch in the red dial. I love it. It has a a beautifully vibrant dial with orange contrasting hands on the subdials that really give it that retro feel. I did put it on a chocolate rally strap, immediately. That really made it pop! Awesome review, by the way. Keep up the great work! 😉👍
Very informative video, thank you for reviewing the watch and going into depth with it.
P.S. Cool voice dude 😎🤙🏽
Thanks! Appreciate it
Those disaligned dots would drive me crazy. My OCD keeps me away from this watch.
I swear, I had the same issue of the bat!!
You are right they are all misaligned i would never see it on a swiss watch
The watch was designed on a napkin at the great sake summer party at Orient. Everybody was drunk and thought it looked just perfect 😄
Nice again mate, production quality is always so impressive on your vids 🤙👌
You picked the color I'm actually leaning towards. Haven't finished the entire video yet, but I'm sure this review's great!
I want that panda so darn badly. Great video as always my man.
Another outstanding presentation Shane, thank you. The Orient leaves me stone cold ... but never mind, it was still a pleasure to watch.
I like it. Great video as always. You should be on your way to 50k plus subs in no time! Keep it up!
Well keeping my fingers crossed.
The dots align perfectly on my one. I put on a different bracelet and it’s got even more retro feel and I just love it.
Good to know. What bracelet did you put it on?
Relative Time It’s factory bracelet from my Vostok Amphibian, with the Neo 70’s original end links.
Excellent macro shots!! Great quality content here man!
These misaligned lume dots just came to my attention and now I cannot unsee it. Just why? What were they thinking? There are already white stripes on the indices - why couldn't they fill it with lume. The dial would be cleaner then.
Very fair and even handed review. I am currently looking for a "sweeping" hand quarts so this was keenly interesting.
Well done as always.
It's always cool to see an Orient review...
great as usual, its a nice dress chrono. the more you look at the dial the more you want one.
Just got this for Christmas love this thing for the price.
The green only pops in direct light. I'm returning mine for that reason for the green Orient Neo 70s
Great video as always. I like the novelty of a solar chrono, but not sure if it is enough to pull me away from other chronos in that price range. Thanks again.

$80 is not bad. Part of the price is your paying for some dude in Japan to ship it over here. I'm curious what the run for over there.
My friend has the Panda, it’s a great quartz chrono that looks amazing
I have the panda, I believe it looks better but that is just preference. The watch looks premium!
In retrospect, I think the Panda would have been a better choice. At least easier to photograph. That grey dial looks fantastic in the right light. But it's also hard to get just right.

Nice except for the terribly noticeable misalignment of the chapter ring and the markers.
Dat lume shots, amazing!
cool watch. it's like the gray ghost. the newer releases look to have fixed the lume pits alignment problem.
On my panda there is no alignment-problem, but the small date window really is a joke.
I cannot see the date it's almost invisible
Good clip. Grey face and band look very well together. But those misaligned dots are troublesome, surprised the manufacture did not catch them.
To be fair, I didn't notice them until I looked at it with the macro lens or the regular footage zoomed in. Then it was obvious.
Another great review..thanks!

I have bought the panda version and it has no problem with dots, it's a very nice watch!!
I think the dots might be fine. Just the chapter ring thats off.
Yeah, this dots misalignment is ridicules. This should be QA issue particular to this watch as they are aligned on reference pictures you inserted.
They are perfectly aligned on mine, unfortunate his aren't.
I think it's more of an issue with the hour indicators and the chapter ring. They seemed to be lined up together, but maybe a few degrees rotated to the left. Might be easy to fix. Although someone should have caught that.

I'd say its about the same as most of the $200-300 Eco-Dirvies I've seen. Yet better then the real entry level ones like the Chandler.
i got a question about the second hand, i has to be still the whole time? is the subdial that has to mark the seconds?
I'm not sure I understand what you are asking? is the second hand moving?
@@RelativeTime yeah is the second hand supposed to move all the time or it has to be still in order the watch mark the time right
Great review.
I wanted to get it and liked it alot in the pictures. After seeing your review not so much, think the dan henry 1964 would be better option
I think I just got unlucky with the dial a little misaligned, but the Dan Henery is a fine looking watch. I'll try to buy one soon to check out. I think it has a better look for me, a little more military and casual.
That grey canvas is cool
it's a nice Cordura by Blushark, but I don't see it on their site anymore.
Woah, I just heard about this watch the other day and now you're reviewing it O_O lol
😎
nice watch and a great review
Another informative no nonsense video. Thanks.
Nice looking watch but those misaligned dots!... Good Gawd how does a watch leave the factory looking like that?
I expect that a little from some of the off Chinese brands, but not Orient.
Concept: 8 out of 10. QC: 3 out of 10. I'd send it back right away because those stupid misaligned dots! My OCD is in overdrive!
The dots not aligned and it would drive me nuts to own these otherwise good looking Orient, I love this brand and I’m surprised it has this issue.
I will research other colors like panda to see if it has same misaligned issue.
From what I’ve heard it’s just a random fluke on the one I got.
Wanted to buy the panda version but I couldn't find it in Europe. Nice review as always.
I like the time lapse lume.
Always fun to make.
Interesting watch. Was going to mention Dan Henry; but you beat me to that one. Just going to say it, watches with misalignment are ok. If I can tell the time, it clearly works.
I'll probably sell this one and pick up a Dan Henry 1963. Although supposedly a new Dan Henry is on the way.
I have the Orient Neo '70 FUG1U004V9.
A quartz piece with a beautiful North to South Tokyo stripes dial, poor lume and about the same ok-ish bracelett.
I enjoy it so much.
I haven't seen that one... that's an awesome dial.
these dots are waaaaaayy off, unacceptable I don't care how much it costs
i have the panda version, and thankfully, the dots are all spot on (no pun intended 😅)
I like the colors. Could have been a little better, but still nice. Great Review!
Good looking watch.
Awesome watch!
Great video. The dots are way off.
I Believe this is using a Seiko movement. Seiko uses a 24 hour sub dial, and it has a sweeping Chronograph seconds hand.
Could be. Orient is owned by Seiko Epson, and they do make a lot of movements for Seiko Watches.
Nice looking watch. I am in the market for a solar piece and those from Citizen just don't speak to me.
My kids would love a panda.
I loved Pandas when I was kid. I remember going to the San Diego zoo and seeing a breeding pair that were on loan from China. That's also where I learned that one of the reasons they were going extinct, was that they were often too lazy to mate. At least in captivity. Always a fun topic to learn as kid.
A bit hard to read. I think there is a contrast problem. Maybe you just get used to it after a while. Not a bad watch by any means though.
A little. It's more of a dress chrono, which I think always makes things harder to read. Panda version might be better. I'll probably sell this and get a Dan Henry 1963. Shouldn't be any contrast issues with that.
Those lume pips lol Did a blind man put them on?
Like the look of the watch but the misaligned lume dots would drive me crazy. Poor design choice to have those separate from the indices.
Agreed. It looks as though the indices and the Chapter ring are lined up nicely with each other. But they may be off a few degrees from the dial itself.
Excellent presentation thank you! I suspect I will pass on that watch based on your review!
Thank you!
Orient Guarts HN7052-70CA
White striped long counterbalance on the minute and hour hand? Terrible decision, very confusing to look at. Maybe I'm just too familiar with dive watches, but legibility is a must.
Tachymeter isn't very practical sure, but it's one of those quirks I really look for in a chronograph, especially a retro-styled racing chrono. Daytona and Speedmaster know their role and are perfectly designed for it, this one... just not so much.
Its like a rolex cosmograph watch !!
Great review/video. The misaligned dots ruin an otherwise nice looking watch... no way I would wear that...
Omega speedmaster professional moon watch inspired
I think most chronographs today take inspiration from the Speedmaster or the Rolex Daytona.
@@RelativeTime did you know that Orient Neo 70s panda dial is only limited edition release and can be a collectors item in the near future as per many watch experts and consultants? That's why I keep Mt orient neo70 in great condition because it will worth a thousand dollars in a near future
I didn't know that. Sometimes it's hard to get information like that on these when they are only released in Japan.
@@RelativeTime try to go on any Orient watch store and ask for that model and you will having hardtime to find it brother, 😂 the reason you can buy it from online is because the goal of orient is to sell all of that limited edition model,
very nice i like here in uk £350 on amazon ripoff .... on ebay there a lot cheaper cheers
Ouch! Amazon here it's a little higher, but not that much. I'm curious what they sell for in Japan though.
found this japan-select.com/ $236 plus shipping and then tax in uk still lot cheaper than paying amazon price..... cheers
The pogue that Seiko never gave us.
From 70 s till now ! I am checking the Orient watches and like the way that they are as a alternative to Seiko and Citizen , But they have problem with the design !! Good quality but poor design
these watches are going for $360 now
I haven't looked in a while, but I assume they are higher. All the JDM watches are. Especially some of the Casio Oceanus. The S100 models were a couple hundred. Now $500
Not gonna lie, you're reminding me of Patrick Bateman
Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.
@@RelativeTime Haha thanks Patrick
Those lume dots are horrible. It's distracting for sure.
Más hermoso que el Rolex
Why is Patrick Bateman reviewing a Japanese watch
Why wouldn't he?
Let's see Paul Allen's watch
Ориент очень хорошая фирма, НО.... По им изменить маркетинговую политику.. на территории СНГ снова получить популярность
Nice job. But those dots. Must have handed that project over to a bunch of 5th graders. Unbelievable!
The odd thing is that the hour indicators and the chapter ring line up perfectly. So they were paying attention there, just not on the bigger picture.
Orient please go under 40mm. Fucking hell
Only ones I can think of are a few of the Orient Stars.
Where did you get yours for 130USD?
@@keksimus_maximus jombashop. I do not believe the watch is at this price anymore. Last time I checked the prices went up. I think I really got lucky.
Great review
Thank you!
