- Wow now this is The Most Epic Misty Mountains Cover - A Cappella
Tim Faust has added a real depth to this song, I really enjoyed the blend between these two voices.

8:13 - I've def picked up more tension since my opera days but that is due to all this aca/pop singing... Also you got to keep in mind that these music videos are usually just visual representations of the audio playback and most of the time we are just conveying emotion and messing around... I couldn't tell you how many times I will be purposely singing back a half step under/over to make my team laugh while shooting.
You look engaged and present, it’s a great video. Thanks for clarifying that shooting these videos is done to play back and perfect vocal technique is not the focus but rather, emotion, engagement and entertainment is. It is much much harder than it looks - my respect to you and your team for the time and effort you put in to giving us all something to react to and enjoy!
I cant wait for him to react to "I See Fire"
...does anyone hear boss music?
@@seanmsw5977 You hear that too?
This is one of the most awesome things ever recorded.
Also as a polite gesture to those whom you are using our IP for I would recommend leaving links to the originals and purchase/streaming options. This would avoid those of us who aren't as okay with these react videos a more collaborative approach / workflow. Best!
Point taken and happy to oblige.
Well put. Links back to the original should always be first up in the description as well as an encouragement to go listen to it (as well as their other work). I very much appreciate videos that don't have to use weird cut-outs, audio shifts, etc. to get around the copyright bot. In general it's the fans of a given channel recommending music so the chances are the reactor is going to enjoy it.
@@KenLavigne Just looking out! I adore when brilliant people like you provide feedback on my work. This is such an isolated thing that us digital creators do.. so having other brilliant people like you to listen and allow us to WATCH you listen/watch it's very rewarding. ;). Please feel free to do this with any/all of my work! I love it! -- Plus honestly I've had some mistakes coming up w/ my voice pedagogy the last few years. Call me out my friend.
I made a few reactions to your stuff a while back, and I have worked a bit on my setup, and should be ready to do more with songs you made, that I knowingly didnt watch yet, so I give the true experience.
Thanks Peter for allowing reactors to use your music. I just found out about you on this video. Now I'm going to have to check out all of your stuff!
That "ill shut up" was just pure intimidation when tim popped up and started singing hahahahahaha.
Now That Peter has knocked your socks off and Tim blew you off your chair, please put Home Free's cover of Mayday on your list and get ready for a shock. Surprise? Maybe more than one. LOL I enjoyed your reaction. Thanks! ^_^
Agree! Mayday is one of my favorites from Home Free.
I second that!
Yes
Yes this
Ditto, you will be SHOCKED!
Please react to Home Free’s Mayday! I can’t wait to see you hear Tim in that one 😊
Oh yes, would love to see your reaction to this one.
Definitely!
That would be wonderful!
Yes! Mayday isn’t just a surprise, it’s one of their best covers in my opinion!
100%
"The horn of Helm Hammerhand shall sound in the deep, one last time"
~Tim Faust
I listened to this, and grew a beard. Then I grabbed my axe (which also grew a beard) and headed out to retake Moria. I didn't even own an axe until I heard this song. It was just kind of there when I grabbed it.
Peter Hollens sounds like the troubador telling the tale. Tim Foust sounds like the leader calling to action.
Anything with Peter Hollens is amazing. Add Tim Foust and it's perfection.
for incredible harmony, home free's cover of hopelessly helping is awesome.
Or "What we ain't got" and "In the blood" as well.
Very pretty song. I love it.
Tim... "Bass/Baritone all the way." Go watch the Home Free cover of Mayday by Cam. :)
True... but that doesn't actually show that he's a tenor. Yes, he can sing up into tenor ranges, and even a bit into counter-tenor, but when he does so, he still sounds like a bass singing up there. It's a very different quality than a tenor's full-bodied belt. ;)
Actually, Tim sang tenor in another collaboration with both of their wives, as well in The Beach Boys co we of “God Only Knows”. Tim actually sang higher than his wife, Jenika, in some parts!!
I also recommend "Amazing Grace" Peter Hollens w/ Home Free. Tim, literally, covers his entire range in one progression. It's IN-SANE!
@@barefootalien you're actually right because most basses actually have a better falsetto than tenors because there vocal cords are thicker
I read somewhere Tim trained as tenor/baritone when younger then located his bass-ness. Five octave range is the online RUclips story for what that’s worth. He’s evidently been stretching his range up occasionally since Home Free had a personnel shift allowing more options. Snowglobe is a new-ish original I believe where he’s the lead and co-writer I think [it’s always Christmastime]. There’s also some interesting Bass Contest YT videos between Tim, Avi and the bass from Voice Play...that could be a lead for the spectrograph analyzing app with the tech they display.
I concur, you really need to check out Home Free’s cover of Mayday. It will blow your mind and perception of Tim. He’s the only bass I’ve ever seen with such incredible range. Great review!!!!
you need to look at avi kaplan and geoff castelucci. they're pretty damn good. ESPECIALLY check out the oogie boogies song
Tim has a 5 octave range
"The Hobbit" is magic, man, that movie makes me fly to the most beautiful medieval world ✈️♥️
You mean LotR right? Not that eyeburning cg shitfest?
@@aenorist2431 I like both sagas, respect my opinion ✌️
I have a slight affinity myself.
Oh how I deeply love the works of Tolkien and their on screen representations ❤️
@@Necroherz I also loved it until I read the book. ;) Lord of the Rings so much better. But I respect your opinion.
Reacts to "Black is the color of my true love hair" by Peter Hollens and Avi Kaplan!! 💚
That's one of my favorite collaborations ♥️
"All the voices behind Peter" just happen to be Peter .....
Some of them were Tim.
@@DennisKovacich very true, thank you
Next up: Peter's collab with Home Free: I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. :)
If you think Tim is only base, you are sorely mistaken. Watch so of his Home free vid's. Remembered one try "lets get it on" or "all about the base"
or songs that didn't make the cut
His range is amazing. Sings bass, baritone, tenor and tenor 1.
He is definitely "only bass" in the sense his range being huge doesn't really mean otherwise (or make it any less impressive), but that's just not how voice classifications like that work. They're really only relevant in the operatic sense, meaning basically "what is the range in which your voice is most resonant, such that it can be broadcast without microphone over top of an orchestra and an auditorium full of people while being clear and comfortable" lol. In fact, Tim is as low as it goes at Basso Profundo. It's an exceptionally rare voice type and he makes full use of it lol.
Just to give an example, I can hit some fairly low notes (the lowest chest voice note I've hit is A1, which if you didn't know, is quite a bit lower than what you'd typically expect of a bass) but I am most assuredly not a bass and a true bass would sound better singing a C1, even if he couldn't sing as low as me. I have some degree of resonance to these notes, but below a D2 they're basically mic only since I'm basically just letting my vocal cords flap limply on flowing air haha. Tim on the other hand could probably belt these notes out so loud and strong that it'd sound like a giant angry frog! I feel like it's important to point out this kind of stuff, because in my eyes it makes his voice all the more impressive (this goes for other fellows like Avi Kaplan and Geoff Castellucci as well). It's also important to know that, while Tim has an absurdly low chest voice, he does use some techniques beyond simply singing. Like the last note here, I haven't checked what note it is but I'm pretty sure what he's doing is called a "growl". I know he uses it in Home Free's Ring of Fire. A lot of bass singers use techniques like that and subharmonic singing to hit even lower notes (for reference, I can actually belt out an A1 very loud with resonance using subharmonic singing, so sometimes the lines get blurred haha)
Most people you hear singing bass are, technically speaking, baritones.
You should check out HomeFree's Folsom Prison Blues as well, I can't get enough of it.
Great content and awesome reactions. Keep it up, imma keep coming back.
Edit: the jaw push is used very much in classic music, specifically for depth and fulness on high notes. Glad you catched that.
Peter has a recent release with Home Free -- U2's "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" you might want to look at it too
The last time I was this early they were Foggy Foothills.
Peter shapes his words more than anyone I have ever seen. Being from a family with many deaf people it was the first thing I noticed. He uses his jaw and his lips to really articulate the sounds.
"Chutes and ladders!" Your colloquialisms crack me up every single time!
TIM NEVER BLINKS!!!
I love these 2 singing together. They sound phenomenal. Tim has a 5 octave range that he can sing. As he says he can sing the bottom of the piano and 5 octaves higher. Amazing. Love your reactions.
Shoots and ladders, holy smokes! Hahaha I love that! Thanks for a fun and informative reaction! These two are simply amazing together, but how could they be anything else. Peter is so extremely talented, and Tim, well.... There are no words.
It is currently the 8th day of my personal quest to get Ken to check out the band Eisbrecher, and the song Stossgebet (Eisbrecher version), Skandal Im Sperrbezirk or Was Ist Hier Los.
We’re in this for the long haul gang.
is that the same one as powerwolf?
@@springheelzach812
Yes, but it’s the Eisbrecher version. So NDH instead of Power Metal.
Tim is absolutely awesome!!
Ken - very fun for us to watch your reaction to these two amazing men. Thanks for listening, teaching, reacting. Chuck in NE Kansas
Excellent reaction! And now... Peter and Avi doing black is the color of my true loves hair. It is fantastic!
Ya it would shock you to see how high Tim goes! It’s insane! He has the most incredible range.
Don’t they just about cover the entire singable scale between them? I mean, Tim’s range is pretty incredible and so is Peter’s...and yes, nerding out EVERYWHERE
My introduction to a cappella singing was Peter Hollens. It was through his duets with Tim Foust that I discovered bass singers. Peter has undergone throat surgery which has affected his singing. He’s coming back, but it’s a hard journey.
To hear Peter at his best: listen to his solo of “O Come Emmanuel”.
Oh my gosh!! That low note at the end surprised me a bit! Really did.
I'll have to try and find an app for ya. I don't know exactly what I'm looking for but I'll do my best. :)
YES! So now It’s time for Blackbird! Blackbird! Blackbird! Blackbird! Featering the lovely Avi. Please 🙏😘
Three Peter Hollennsses preciousssss
TIM FOUST NEVER BLINKS - I've watched this a dozen times. He never blinks.
I have been waiting for you to do this one! I wonder what wonderful epithet you will say at the end!
Now to watch!
EDIT: "Shoots and Ladders!". I think the split screen and Peter's treatment in the video is light whereas Tim is dark means Peter is above the Mountains and Tim is beneath. Possibly an Elf and a Dwarf? Anyway, I just love this song, the choral arrangements are beautiful and the blend of voices is sublime! Love it!
Thanks, Ken. Always educational!
I love your reaction ! It's so much fun ! Tim surprises everyone 😉
I nerd about all of it. So much talent!
You’ve definitely moved into a spot as one of my favorite reactors! I love the balance of true enjoyment and your educated, in-depth reaction (without being haughty or condescending). Kudos.
Your reactions are always a genuine joy to watch. :) Been looking forward to watching this!
I am definitely nerding out! 🤣🤣🤣 Fifths, gregorian you name it!
The funny thing is that Tim not only throws these lows effortlessly but when you see him doing it live he does it in such an entertaining way. He is s funny guy. 🙂
It was soooo beautiful, I am just in tears over it. that is all I can say, just crying my azz off of how beautiful it is.
yeah, they did an amazing job in making the video, Peter has been know to do 120 layers of his voice in some videos, that's pretty crazy, ha
Peter's voice feels like cool rain and Tim's voice feels like a warm campfire...it's really a beautiful arrangement, too short though!! Haha...I love learning about some of the orchestration through your analysis, thank you!!
Haunting
I love the confusion on peoples faces when Tim goes high tenor. Many have mentioned Mayday. How about some of his live performances of Your Man? Just before he blows the speaker?
Yes but that is h entering falsetto where as in mayday it's full singing
The Peter Hollens covers of Desert Rose and Now We Are Free are really nice.
If I know Peter as well as I think, those other voices are also Peter's layering, which only adds so much more to the song(s). Such as Peter's own single version of this song.
New subscriber here! I'm a retired music teacher from Eastern Kentucky. I have directed both band and chorus and have arranged/rearranged many works to meet the needs of smaller ensembles. I suppose I'm one of the Theory Nerds you mentioned! I'm really glad I found your channel! Looking forward to watching all of your videos!
Another fun Peter Hollens collab is his arrangement of a medley of LOTR drinking songs with Hank Green.
holy smokes ?? hank green can sing too ??
Terrific and magical straight tones that are juxtaposed.
120 tracks of just Peter and Tim combined for an incredible cover. I saw Peter post that on another reactors channel.
Awesome reaction! 👍🏼
awesome guys
I subscribed. So worth it. I just subscribed to two other vocal coach channels who analyzed this very same video. haha Can't get enough of it. Plus I'm a Tolkien fanatic, and a Peter Hollens fan/subscriber already, so you can imagine how often I have watched this video.
Thanks Joshua Harman, glad to have you here!
I subscribed bc of the Acapella reactions. Thank you for covering my most favorite style of music.
Hi, Ken: I agree with your professional assessment of both Peter Hollins and Tim Foust vocal skills, your assessment is an excellent example of the range, dynamics and quality of their vocal skills.-All my best always
Love watching your videos, Ken. You provide a lot of insight into the singers, their techniques, their harmonies, etc. And isn’t it a treat to hear from the genius himself, Peter Hollens? He’s phenomenal.
Peter is a wizard
Wonderful reaction Ken! Thank you so much. The first time I heard this song. I thought I was listening to an old Latin Mass. So resonate and full. I was a history teacher back before I retired. I used to teach my students that music has been important to people for a very long time. Gregorian Chants always made me feel closer to God. They still do.
I subscribed. I stumbled onto your channel, thank goodness. I have been binging my butt off. lol This is pure gold.
I'm a huge Home Free fan and found Peter through them. I'm from Oregon as is Peter, he is ridiculously talented in that he can sing all the different parts in a Capella music.
Both men have incredible ranges!
This reminds me of ancient Gregorian chants..... It has that kind of quality.
Tim's growl at the end was amazing
i wish i had such a deeeeep voice
Please please please, Home Free "Do You Hear What I Hear" and "Mayday".
Wow!!! Love your reactions. I’m downloading these guys
Tim...the man with a voice than can be more felt rather than heard ^_^
AND... Tim Faust never blinks (in this video).
''Quick staring contest with Tim Foust, I know i'm gonna lose''......hahahaha you know that's right, he stares a whole right through anybody on this one..hahahhaha. Plus, did you notice he shook the camera on that last note.
Listen and react to Peter Hollens " I See Fire". You will see the power and skills Peter has with acappella.
Great reaction! You should react to Peter Hollen's newest song with Home Free 'Still havent Found what I'm looking for'.
super fun reaction! Ill hop on the mayday train and Folsom Prison blues if you have not done so already!
I'm new, I subscribed. I love how happy you are listening to this music, you don't seem numb to it at all from it being your profession!
Thoroughly enjoyed your take and input on this one. Peter has an awesome voice, along with a heck of a range. What he's able to do (produce) is simply amazing! --- His ability to really bring out the dramatic effect, in depth ... just, just - well, lol --- does just that!!! Tim -- No mistaken, he's bass/baritone ... pulls it off very well. As you journey on ... it'll be quite interesting to observe. Thanks
Great reaction. I'll give another vote for Home Free's version of Mayday.
I sing bass and even I was at a loss, Holy Hell that still gives me the shivers.
Love Peter Hollens work! One of the best on RUclips
I alway love watching reactor’s faces when Tim hits those low, low notes! I sure wish I would have studied music in college. Then I would know what you vocal coaches and music theory majors are talking about! ☺️ I did enjoy your reaction!!
One of my favorite songs by Peter Hollens is his duet with Malukah, covering Lullaby of Woe from The Witcher 3.
I also echo the others in the comments telling you to listen to Mayday by Home Free. It's amazing.
Wowzers, that nearly relaxed me right to sleep! Pretty damn cool!
Love learning ... thank you for your reaction. As a Home Fry, I agree Mayday would be a good one to view. Also, How Great Thou Art is amazing as well. 🎶😊🎵
Im a huge L.O.T.R. fan and the Hobbit also. Peter an Tim did an amazing job on this song and when I first heard it, I was total blown away. It still hits me from time to time watching different reactions, just how damn good, it really is. Ken great reaction also, I joined and look forward to seeing more reactions.
I would recommend Mayday too. Can't wait to see how you will be blown away 😉
After watching the original video 10 or so times i noticed that that last G#1 Tim hits actually has the camera slightly vibrating
Many of the prominent bass singers (Tim included) have said that relaxing the head and neck help reach the absolute bottom of your range. I'm a bass singer myself (F#1 is my current absolute low, I can reach A1 conformably) and can confirm that it helps a great deal. I use to find that my my head and neck would be incredibly tense after singing for a bit, sometimes even giving myself a headache. After hearing Tim, Avi, Geoff and some other bass singers talk about keeping the head and neck relaxed and focusing on that, I've been able to reach the depths much easier and avoid feeling so tense after singing. I'm not well read enough on the muscles in the head and neck to explain why it helps but it definitely does.
I say all of this because of Ken's comment at the beginning of the song about how relaxed Tim's face is compared to Peter's face.
The arrangement is so good here
Love your reactions! I have one for ya. Iced Earth - Dante's Inferno live in Athens. It's a little long, but it's very good. Matt Barlow is one of my favorite metal singers. Such a good tone.
Hello Ken, I've looked through your reaction videos and didn't see anything from Pentatonix. You talked about the blending harmonies and layering. Pentatonix Bohemian Rhapsody has insane counting and layering of harmonies used in this video without the use of metronome or instruments. I'd like to see your reaction as a vocal coach on this video.
"I'll shut up" really got me unguarded lol :DD great reaction!!
When you talk about sibling's voices... It reminds me of a conversation I had back when we still had our landline. If we didn't name ourselves when we picked up the phone or called, people were challenged when it came to figuring out who of us they were speaking to. 🤣
My brother is 5 years younger than me, this was before his voice got deeper and he hit puberty.
A couple RUclips quick tips. There are some shortcut keys that you may find useful. K = Pause, J = Rewind 10 seconds, L = Fast forward 10 seconds, Left Arrow = rewind 5 seconds, Right arrow = Forward 5 seconds. The spacebar activates whatever is selected, so I find using K more reliable for pausing. I use these shortcuts whenever I watch Voiceplay, Home Free, anything With Avi, all those moments that make you stop and go, "what did I just hear?!" Hope you find it useful!
The collab Peter did with Jonathan Young singing Hands of Gold and Rains of Castamere is a must listen for great the great contrast between their 2 voices
Amazing! I've discovered some great musicians through your videos!
Ken your channel is great. I like your reactions and I love Conan and you remind me of him a lot ❤❤❤
You should check out more of their duets. I highly recommend Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Tim serves some range.👍
Tim's latest note ( voice growl G#1 ) subharmonic is just hilarious tho ! Around 30 - 40Hz .
The staring contest comment had me giggling!
