Hi! I’m African and very prone to post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. My skin is dehydrated and acneprone. I love Netrogena ultra sheer dry touch broad spectrum sunscreen. Sunscreen usually irritates my skin and gives me eczema, but not this one. It leaves a slight whit/grey cast, but my makeup covers it just fine. None drying or sticky.

I use Murad city skin and skin aqua milk for my spf sun protection. My melasma has lightened up a great deal!! I'm following all of your tips thank you! Thanks to you I now know hiw to properly moisturize my face and what products to use. Before this regime I would use the alpha hydrox brand and use my tretinoin twice a week for the past 7 years on and off. I'm obsessed with your channel!! Thank you!!

I have dark skin and have been affected by a bad bout of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, brought on by an allergic reaction/sun exposure/stress and finally TRETINOIN (the tretinoin did not agree with me). My derm started me on brightening pads that contain hydroquinone 8% along with kojic acid/licorice root/etc. The beginning of August marks my vigilant lifestyle against sun exposure and with active physica sunscreen usage. I began using Elta MD SPF 50+ roll on. I have searched HIGH AND LOW for a physical/mineral sunscreen that doesn’t leave a cast. I have finally given up and accepted the white cast; now, I simply apply makeup atop the sunscreen. I use a UVA/UVB blocking umbrella everyday - rain or shine. And I wear a scarf around my neck in addition to layering my neck with a thick amount of the sunscreen. I’m so happy I found Dr. Dray’s video because I now know that 24 weeks is an appropriate time to measure progress. Wishing everyone dealing with PIH/melasma the best of luck!

I have used tretinoin 0.025% for a year and it has signifcantly lightened the sunspots I had on my face. You almost can't see them anymore. I did not have very many sunspots to begin with though. I have very oily, sensitive and acne prone skin. I have tried so many sunscreens. Australian Gold Botanical Tinted SPF 50 and Paula's Choice Super Light Resist SPF 30 are my favorite sunscreens and the only ones that don't make me a greasy mess. I wear them alone or top them with DermaE mineral powder SPF 30. When I have worn makeup for a special occasion both sunscreens wear beautifully under makeup. As always, another wonderful informative video. You are such a talented teacher! I wish your videos had been around when I was a teenage girl. I don't think I ever would have layed out in the sun to try and cover up my horrible acne. I plan on showing your videos to my girls when they get older. Thank you for helping so many people.

My favorite sunscreen that works and blends really well for me is the EltaMD UV Sport SPF 50 & CaraVe AM sunscreen SPF 30 so the combination sunscreens. I also use Tretinoin cream .1% five days a week and I take a break on the weekends, so I feel for me it is good for me to double layer my sunscreens.

Been very depressed for the last few months. Struggled with acne and pih since i was 15. Skin was very clear for two years from 2021-2022. 2023 came along and my acne came back also. It took away all my self esteem and feels like a nightmare i cant wake up from. A couple months ago I went to my first dermatologist appointment and was prescribed doxycycline and adapalene. Went back a month later with minimal breakouts and got a prescription of tretinoin 0.05%. Started using the tretinoin a couple nights ago. I want my marks to fade quickly so I am going to use it nightly seven days a week. My skin has gotten use to the adapalene so Im sure it can handle the tretinoin at that rate. Your videos give me hope and longing for a happy and successful future for myself. Thank you Doctor.

Some others I've tried are the Biore Watery Essence (the alcohol content is too high for me though because I am on tretinoin and clindamycin for my acne). Hi Dr Dray! I love, love, love your q&a series (I love all your videos, but especially the q&a’s). I have been diligent about daily sunscreen for at least 20 years, but neglected my neck, chest, arms and hands until recently. I was never a sun worshipper and actually have always shyed away from the sun (I’m quite fair-skinned). Luckily, I have suffered little sun damage and, thanks to you, I am now militant in my sun protection. Up until finding your videos, I used Oil of Olay Complete Care moisturizer with spf 30 for daily sun protection. In order to up my game, I’ve tried the following Asian sunscreens. They are all good, but leave me shiny, which I don’t like: Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence, Shiseido Senka Mineral Water UV Gel, and Nivea Sun Protect Super Water Gel. I’ve also used Australian Gold Botanical 50 spf tinted mineral sunscreen, which is good, but tends to dry my skin out. I don’t wear foundation or powder (little makeup), so I can’t advise if any of these would work well/be less shiny under makeup. Since I now use your method of putting hyaluronic acid on a wet face and then moisturizer on top of that (my skin feels great!), the moisturizers with spf don’t work so well for me. My current favorite sunscreen is Etude House Sunprise Mild Airy Finish Sun Milk. It leaves a matte finish and works great. I use at least two layers. I don’t detect a white cast, but, again, I’m fair-skinned. Thanks, again!!!

I have found these three to leave the least noticeable whitecast: Replenix SPF50 tinted; MyChelle SPF 50, medium shade;Australian Botanicals SPF 50, tinted. I have also tried Neutrogena Sheer Zinc (too heavy, very obvious whitecast), Shiseido SPF 50 (good consistency, obvious whitecast). Thank you Dr. Dray! Another great video. I am latina, sensitive with rosacea. I have tried a few sunscreens including the elta md but my favourite is La Roche Posay Anthelios tinted. No redness, no breakouts and is perfectly balanced, not too matte not too shiny finish, just a healthy look.

Well...I like to follow your suggestions and I layer my sunscreens. I have olive complexion and seriously annoying malasma. I wear a wide brimmed hat (another suggestion from you). i layer a Korean chemical sunscreen such as Biore water or HAda Labá with Murad City PA++++ or Exuviance PA+++- both are tinted. Sometimes I add a drop of my full coverage foundation to a sunscreen if not tinted and it makes it a tinted sunscreen. Lol. Thanks for providing so many good tips. I honestly wear my sunscreen more religiously now because of your videos and appreciate the information. I’m loving the Korean and Japanese sunscreens a lot. Wow.

Oh wow! Great explanation. I've been using the retin-a micro gel 0.08% since December (I use it 4x/week) and have noticed that the dark spots on my right cheek are more noticeable now. I've been able to keep the flaking under control for the most part but I guess the darkening is another form of irritation?

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  6 лет назад +4

Possibly, though one thing that can happen is that as the retin a works to remove the discoloration in the top layers of the skin, discoloration in the bottom layers is "revealed" and becomes more noticeable....best to see your derm to know for sure

There have been one little hyperpigmentation on the side of my face for a few years and just disappeared by using retinA for a couple of months.

Hello Dr, thanks for the very informative video! I have 2 questions which were not addressed in the video concerning melasma
    1. Heat sources such as oven and saunas, do they affect melasma?
    2. Suncreams with Oxybenzone as an active ingredient (suspect of being a hormone disrupter) ...do they affect melasma?
    Thank you xx

I use a mineral based sunscreen but also put one pump of the neutrogena make up with it so it is not so white. That seems to help. It cosmetics’ bye bye foundation has SPF 30 mineral sunscreen in a bunch of shades with medium to full coverage. I also use Australian gold SPF 50 tinted mineral face sunscreen on its own or under makeup, but the tint really just offsets the white cast and does not offer coverage. I love your informative channel!

Thank you Dr. Dray. This video was by far the best one I've watched of yours. My derm told me I have PIH and melasma on my upper lip. I am going to request a prescription of tri luma next time I go see her. I am already on Retin-a micro. If there is a combo topical to combat both issues I am having, I'm all for it!
Is it better to test out the OTC hydroquinone products first rather then get a prescription for a higher percentage?

    Another great video! Thank you.
I use LaRoche Posay Toleriane Double Repair SPF30 right out of the shower in the morning after Cerave moisturizer (on my wet skin--thank you Dr Dray ;). Then, about an hour later I use Neutrogena Healthy Defense mineral sunscreen SPF50. The break in between allows the sunscreens not to cause "pilling" of the moisturizers. After that I can apply a powder foundation (It Cosmetics or Bare Minerals) that has some Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide. Unfortunately, I don't re-apply all day because of the foundation, but am mostly indoors. If I do go out in the sun I have a powder sunscreen that I carry in my purse which I dust over my face, hands and chest.
I know it's not a perfect routine, but I try! Way better than what I use to do!

Suntegrity Sunscreen-spf 30 but it does leave an obvious white cast. It's basically Desitin for the face LOL 20% zinc oxide. I use this when I know i'll be driving a lot, be outdoors a lot.
Citrix Elite spf 40 - also leaves a slight whtie cast, but better then suntegrity. I would say I use this more during winter or when sun exposure is more limited. 7% zinc oxide (i think) and a chemical sunscreen.

I have a "medium/dark"/olive mixed race skin tone and these are sunscreens I've used over the years that don't leave a cast. Go on Matte: Cetaphil Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30, Dermalogica Oil Free Matte Medibac SPF 30, Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 30 (the 55 is awful). Also for people with drier skin/climate may enjoy: Aveeno Protect & Hydrate SPF 30, Alba Very Emoillent Facial Sunscreen SPF 30

Super informative as always, Andrea. Currently I'm using Cerave's AM moisturizer/sunscreen which I don't really care for because it makes my skin feel tight but I intend to use it up and then look for something else. I also use Neutrogena's Healthy Skin "anti-aging" Perfector tinted moisturizer/sunscreen 30 which I really like! I don't like to use foundation so this works well for me because it has just enough tint to provide some sheer coverage, it moisturizes well and it has sunscreen! It does leave a little bit of shine or "dewiness" if you will, but that is easily remedied with a very light dusting of translucent powder. Happy Friday to you!
