I became a widow 5 years ago and l don’t regret staying single after my husband death. It’s just not worth the risk because people are just dishonest.
It's EXTREMELY hard to disclose Herpes so I can't imagine how hard it is to disclose HIV. Prayers to all infected or affected.

Most people don't ask because they don't care!

Thank-you for creating awareness 🙏 I am a 36 year long time survivor ❤️ I want to tell those who are living with this human condition that there is hope 🦋
I feel pretty sheltered. I didn't realize there is still so much ignorance regarding HIV/AIDS. My heart goes out to these folks and the world is better with you sharing your stories ❤
I wish all these people so well.
This was filmed in 2014, and I hope everybody made it and is still with us today.
Thank you, Lisa Ling, for your incredible, important work!
They have FILMED PLENTY of these documentaries and Prison Lifestyle for years and provided educational awareness in the media.
@Melanated483 my point is that it's ten years old and I hope everyone who shared their stories here is alive and well

It’s frightening that people withhold this type of information from their prospective love interest. I would love to see a follow up.
It's frightening and illegal, especially if they knowingly withhold their positive status
Exactly. Like why did the acquaintance tell the lady after she was leaving a relationship with the dude?
@Geminicricketi its not the acquaintant business to tell
How did the acquaintance know his personal business and did her family member know this info beforehand?
@@Geminicricketi That was mean and wicked...because she knew it from the start..
I hope all of these people are alive and happy in this year of 2024 May 6. Bless all of these people. ❤❤❤
Its important now days to go get tested with your partner before initimacy. Unfortunately, that doesnt stop people from cheating and contracting something during the relationship but it's a good place to start.
I always practiced this. Yes, I caught some of them. Thank goodness I didn't sleep with them. However, even if you are married this can happen.
Just got divorce final.a month ago. He has herpes. I took precautions. The marriage was failed on so many levels. This happened to be ONE of many. I am herpes free btw...
Now at 62. Celibate. Will not do relationships any longer. I consider myself lucky.
I’m so glad Daphne has a strong support system in her family. Not everyone is as fortunate to have that without judgement and alienation that furthers your shame. I hope she’s doing well today.
I will never be anyone. You cannot trust people. I am sorry for these people. Virtual hug.
I can only imagine the shame they feel. I respect the bravery
No one should sleep with Anyone that leaves jail/prison, without a outside prison wall clinic test with paper in your hand results, AND repeat test after 3 months with outside clinic wall papers in hand.
Its sad that some people didnt care and infected others, you cannot take that back!
Not at all..DISGUSTING!!
That's what makes it hard. Those people will pass it on and the victim won't know for a while.
My heart goes out to all infected persons but much respect to the one's trying to make a difference in the community it can't be easy putting your life on display but I'm glad you're out here to help... God bless you all!
The church "shunned" her. Imagine that? Great journalism Lisa. We appreciate you.
Another reason to stay single
And celibate!
Yup been single for years! Married people are not saved!

You missed the point of U=U. Undetectable equals Untransmissable. A friend is mine is positive has been for years, her ex by gave it to her. She can’t transmit the disease. It’s no longer the death sentence it was thankfully.
The young man born with H.I.V. touches me differently: He had "absolutely" no control concerning his H.I.V. status. May all these people stay resilient.👍🏾🕍🕌⛪️

@@ratedn4nia it's a phrase you often hear in 12 step programs. Don't know if I agree with that philosophy, but, I guess the truth will set you free.
Lisa Ling is a great interviewer!!
The adoptive parents did a disservice to their adoptive son. They might have been well intended; however, it was wrong to use him to educate the community. He should have been allowed to just be a kid.
Their son needed medical attention. They educated to try and reduce the bs he dealt with in school
This was interesting. Their stories are so sad but encouraging at the same time. So many people live with HIV and can lead a healthy life however, I don’t think this episode did a good job at tackling the entire silent epidemic. There was only one mention of “straight men” sleeping with men that don’t consider themselves gay. That is a huge reason a lot of straight black women have contacted HIV from DL men. That is a reality that seems to always be understated when it comes to this topic. It does a HUGE disservice to the entire black community to not speak about this very real reality!
I noticed that as well and believe it was intentionally left out but I’m with you. That is a HUGE factor in the black community that no one wants to discuss.
Of course it was intentionally left out! If that aspect was discussed and it’s reckless behavior it would be viewed as hate speech. While purposely leaving unknowing straight black women out in the cold smh!
I agree. It’s clear they are getting it from the men they are with. Those men s|eep with other men and not being honest about it. It’s just not safe out there. Smh
Some of this also came from IV drug use, as well as on the down low.
I was wondering if Sonny got it in prison.
It’s because most of them are dealing with guys who see other guys undercover and they don’t know it. So it spreads.
I hope one day a cure is found. 🙏
I totally agree ❤❤
Stop sleeping with several different people is a good start.
I think they already have a cure but big pharma will not make money by allowing the cure so they make ppl manage the disease.
@@ariamason9324 I’ve seen stories of women getting it from their spouses. What’s your solution to that?
My cousin is a aids counselor and if caught early you can basically be cured. The count so low that it can't even be picked up on test anymore. Yes it's scarey but luckily no longer a death sentence.
Why can't people understand that sexual immorality can have deep/lifelong or generational consequences
🙄 I know of a person who has passed from the virus. She was a virgin when she married her husband. Faithful. He stepped out on her and gave her aids. NO ONE is safe.
@@louniece1650 True.. sexual immortality can harm the innocent. Sin is dangerous like a stray round.
My heart goes out to every person featured. Sending love and light!
I love love love Lisa Ling shows and specials. Her reporting is always so good
Why are people getting into relationships with people and not getting tested before they take the relationship further.
Promiscuity and irresponsible behavior contributes more than anything! It's sickening and sad.
This!
Excellent, episode. We need more brave people like this to dispel the stigma.
Thank you Lisa 🎉 for your hard work 🙏
I wish these episodes would've been released earlier. Many of the statistics presented are no longer relevant since they were filmed 8 to 10 yrs ago.
They were on cable tv
For the most part the statistics are similar- believe it is around 1 in 9 to 1 in 10 because the root causes are not being addressed locally or nationally.
Stats are about the same today. It actually spiked a little during COVID. Also,Latinos are another group facing the epidemic too.
@@nbbim2012Exactly!!! These stats have ALWAYS been around for decades. The issue is BW REFUSE to acknowledge the reality and want to CONTINUE TO DATE, PROCREATE within their communities. 💯🎯🤷🏾♀️
The stats are worse now.
1 in 4 males in the American South in insane!!!
This story is heartbreaking. God Bless all the affected people. So sad.

It's so So SO important to get tested with your partner, together!!
In this day and age you can't not bring it up, or take someone's word they can lie like no tommorow.
Go together to the clinic and make sure you see the Results.
In Africa prep is being given free, medications are given free no bureaucracy no complicated paperwork…what’s going on America
They already get enough handouts in America, can’t they pay for anything??
Ask the many Africans who moved to the US 😢
Wow I’m so happy that Tom is doing good. I met him back in palm coast years ago. We lost contact, I’m just so happy he’s doing great!
This truly touched my heart. To see people giving purpose to their lives.
When i was a new nurse 16 years ago this was a death sentence. I am so so glad for the advancement in meds and i hope we keep getting better at giving these to those who need them and those who need them for prevention too!!
16? What part of the world are you in? Didnt it cease to be so in the mid 2000s for most with access to ARVs. This included a lot of sub-saharan africa with access to clinics.

Sad. I'm black and don't know any black person who has it. Or had it and died. I wonder.......
You do. You just don’t know.
They didn't tell you.
There are certain segments of the population where this runs rampant. There are certain populations, of blacks who are educated, put their health first and choose not to put themselves or others at risk. Then you have the idiots who put themselves & others at risk, blame & finger point, don't protect themselves.

Some people are just born with it passed down from the mother. It's a lot more manageable nowadays.
Just because it’s manageable doesn’t mean its any less shameful and heavily stigmatized.
Things have changed a lot now. If a woman is pregnant she can prevent it from passing to the child. There are meds now for it. I have a friend with two children n both r negative.

Just watching this and seeing the first part. What I see ….. I want to at least thank Lisa and the ones who interviewed. Thank you all so much! I relate to addiction many ways s as me I feel for these guys! Alllll of them
Ok, this is another reason kids are languishing in foster care. Prospective adoptive families may well need to ask probative questions about birth parents.
Is there a followup to this?

Sonny used to like to party and play back in the day, especially with sum one I knew that passed away
Lisa Ling ❤
Time for a cure.
This is so sad
Men. SMH. I am so tired of this stuff. People are so awful to each other. How sad. People are just vicious to each other.
We women are the gatekeepers. Men only behave the way we allow them to, and/or raise them to do!
If we massively raised our standards and agreed to demand respect, commitment, protection and provision before allowing them around us, everybody would be better off!
For Sonny does dozen of people mean men & women during addiction?
Probably.
I got the same vibe lol
I think he meant people because he was sharing needles.
Personal responsibility is often minimized in these shows.
Yep.
Agree. The only person I feel for is the guy that got it from his mother. I mean I feel bad for all of them but a child didn’t ask to be here🙏🏾
@@dawnlee866and neither did the women who were in committed relationships. It’s easy to sit back and judge, but NONE of us are perfect.

@8:20 Anyone remember JL King? He said alot of men were getting with eachother and going back home to their wives/girlfriends. Sad.
Her family is wrong for that. They should have flagged that gave her some kind of warning. But this can (unfortunately) happen to anyone.

The title of this is offensive

I believe allot more ppl of other ethnicities are positive, yet, may not know- or withhold their status when qualified as undetectable, as they may think is untransmittable.
Right especially those w health insurance. Public clinics iS where they get a lot of data.
People sre too fast and loose. Don't sleep with anyone without getting tested
I wonder why personal responsibility is never included in these type of shows. Personal situations big pharma, food giants, weapon makers etc. all get the blame. Parents, average Joe's, grown adults make personal choices to do a, b & c. Pathetic & risky.
It seems like personal responsibility was addressed and one woman got it from her husband.
When I feel.bad for not getting any this makes me feel a whole lot better. God bless them

Condoms ? No ? So poor they can’t afford them?
They rather buy dope or crap, than condoms.
That’s why they have abortions and get hiv.
But they can afford cigarettes and liquor though. People do what they want to do.
This is why God said 'Don't do that!!!!! Lucky you have medication or else its judgement day
Some people have done nothing wrong and are born with it 😢
Lisa Ling looks like she's 80 years old
So do you 🤣🤣....
Anytime I see a headline with race in it I automatically give a thumbs down. Race, gender, blah blah blah. Shut up already. It’s getting so old.
I agree to the 10000% degree.
Exactly. Everyone has HIV/AIDS.
Face reality
Yours is the most asinine response I've ever seen. Race, like gender has to be discussed, because there are different genelogical issues based on ethicity that need to be addressed. Just because you're sensitive to race and ethnicity doesn't mean there aren't valid and relevant issues where they need to be invoked.
