    love how james' guitar was actually louder than billy's in this one. seriously one of those guitarists whose value you don't get until he leaves. billy's songs were dark and angry, but it was james iha who gave a lot of SP's songs their characteristic twisted beauty with his understated ambience. thanks for this.

    • @CXMusicProductions
      @CXMusicProductions 10 лет назад +8

      ***** Really? Didn't sound as bad as the way you put it. "At least 3 times during the show" is not "sloppy all the way around". The only mistakes I hear from Iha are very minor and very rare. And I don't hear out-of-tune moments. I will say, though, that the fact that these guitars are not panned left and right and that James sounds TOO loud at times, and that they do a lot of fuzzed-up jams, that it can get a little grating sometimes, creating the illusion that James is a bad guitarist.
      Regarding awful bends: Since you say you've listened to SP for so many years, you should know that they use a lot of noisy bends that are meant to express anger. They're not spot on, and they're not meant to be. But I don't think they sound awful. And James' bending sounds fine. Are you perhaps referring to his noodlings in the quiet part of "Ruby" or his sitar-esque fills during "Rocket", or his (as he calls them) "drop-ins" during "Porcelina" or "Cherub Rock"? I think they fit the song and they're in-tune. Cite some examples of crappy bending, because I don't hear any. He does a few over-bends, but that's pretty standard in heavy rock. Not bad, for sure.
      I guess everything comes down to preference. Iha is no Billy Corgan or Jeff Schroeder, but I could make a similar case with Billy's singing. Billy goes off a lot during this show, but he sounds great in my opinion - and I know some people hate Billy's voice. Same goes with James' guitar ability. He's not the greatest guitar player, but he lent something to the band's sound that really shows here. But back to your argument, technically, James kicked major ass here. I agree that Billy was the creative genius and Jimmy was the guy who made Billy's vision possible. But I don't think that means that James and D'arcy were crappy players - particularly James. He's not the best, but he's certainly not half as bad as what you wrote him off as.

    • @mekroon
      @mekroon 10 лет назад +3

      During Rocket his bends aren't so good. Let's say he's far from being Billy but I heard many live shows and he's not making that much mistakes. D'Arcy can't sing at all, all of her live backing vocals are terrible. Both contributed a lot to the image and probably the spirit of the songs though. I love the original lineup :)

    • @CXMusicProductions
      @CXMusicProductions 10 лет назад +10

      Pierre Despault jimmy chamberlin said in this interview on youtube somewhere that james and d'arcy "looked like they were the kind of people who knew how to play but can't" which is total bullshit. james contributed a lot artistically and gave a pumpkins a dark, dreamy vibe that jeff schroeder doesn't really do (though it's a joy to hear great guitar interplay with the new lineup). as for d'arcy, well, she's not that bad of a backing vocalist. she's off sometimes, but not always.

    • @dummytree

      *****
      This setup had more to do with the sound engineers on brazilian TV than anything else. Hollywood Rock shows always sounded quite muddy. It probably didn't sound the same when you were there.This is far from being the best Mellon Collie show, it's an early one and by their admission, they were all high that night. James was important in the sound of the band - the latest incarnation of the band i saw last year is sad, just sad, I don't care how much the guitar player shreds. This was a band, flaws and all. Now it's not.

    • @InAnotherLife90
      @InAnotherLife90 10 лет назад +1

      ***** Sure Billy and Jimmy are the core of (what became) the Pumpkins sound, definitely agreed. But that doesn't at all equal 'James and Darcy were useless and bad musicians'. Perhaps we'll never KNOW what potential James Iha had to contribute because he was never given the chance to...

    Definitely evident we got to witness a 'moment' I guess we can call it of where there were times that's been mentioned where D'arcy & Billy didn't always get along. You can tell where it starts with D'arcy, after Corgan & Iha who were having fun with the soccer balls, making the negative comments about performing for a show that's sponsored/having business w/cigarettes. While she's speaking, you notice Billy sitting down & noticeably looking back at James with a sarcastic look/grin on his face. So then after James tries to humorously reply that they're now returning back to a music standpoint, you notice Corgan can't help but to then before starting up the next song make his sarcastic remark of relating their recent fun w/the soccer balls not taking place if not for those cigarette companies. You can just see the boyish look/grin he then turns & makes to James & Jimmy before turning back over to D'arcy to just see what she thinks and/or will do....thus leading to her kicking that of mic of hers to the ground. I can almost guarantee ya that she wasn't laughing when doing that. Nor can I bet that Billy ended up being happy w/that as well. Those two butted heads quite a bit. They both have pretty much made it quite known of their disgust for 1 another thruout these present days. Damn shame...I really was a major major fan of this lineup.

      Yeah I totally agree. I thought the Mellon Collie era was their peak before Jimmy got fired. Jimmy brought something genuinely unique to the sound/vibe of the songs that was not the same when they replaced him with that Kenny Aronoff guy who was a studio musician that mainly acted as a stand in drummer for different bands. The first 3 Pumpkins albums were really special before they changed the direction of the music.

    You know one of my college buddies turned me on to Smashing Pumpkins and he said listen to that which was Gish and I was blown away because to me they didn’t sound like anyone else. Billy’s vocals were very unique, his and James guitar 🎸 playing very original and inspirational, Darcy with her own ice Queen vibe, and Jimmy’s very unique approach to playing aggressively and then quietly and then amazing dexterity with ghost notes on the snare and toms with jazz flavoring! So to sum up they didn’t sound like any group at their time not grunge, soft rock, not alternative, not Progressive rock just their own unique sound which was unheard before ala Van Halen or Jimi Hendrix where right of the Shute as a listener you were going what’s this? I don’t know but I like this! Saw the Gish tour and then Siamese Dream tour as part of LOLLAPOLOOZA! Love the guys! I do miss Darcy though! Just sayin 💔

    This was my favorite era of Pumpkins, when they still had all the original members and 3 albums of amazing songs to pick from. They really solidified their signature "alternative rock with a heavy metal edge" style that made them famous with Mellon Collie. It's too bad they fired Jimmy over his drug problem and took the band in a different direction after this, I feel like they were really onto something special with the first 3 albums.

    I saw an interview with BC on YT and he said that JC is responsible for the band’s sound etc.
    It’s great to get to follow such amazing artists in their prime.
    If you haven’t seen a recent interview with Billy, do so. He’s a different guy: humble, funny, and charming. I like this Billy better than the 90s one. He seems comfortable in his skin and still a risk taker. Who writes a 33-song rock opera in 2023 at the age of 56?

    Essa formação é insuperável, me lembro quando criança que eles conheceram o Ronaldo Fenômeno num programa no SBT, tinha só 5 anos, minha irmã mais velha era fã da banda. Pena que ainda não tinha idade pra ir num show, não curti nessa fase épica da banda.

    Notice how the camera's all refuse to focus on D'Arcy? All screen time is shared between Billy, James and Jimmy. It's like she's nobody wants to acknowledge that she's even there. Watch and see for youself...
