  • What does the Bible say about homosexuality? Nothing - at least, nothing directly. Find out why by watching the video.
I explain why what we think might be the 'plain meaning of scripture' can mislead us when looking at ancient understandings of sexuality, and what that means when using scripture to talk about the Bible and homosexuality or same-sex attraction.
If you want a more in-depth look at this whole area, Affirmative is a book based on my website, with extra resources and some points covered in more depth. You can get it from all major booksellers here: books2read.com/Affirmative

@Caleb Urias God made marriage for man and woman, sure. Two men are men and two women are women, so no problem there.
But no, the Bible does not say that anything outside that is an abomination. You must be confusing it with something else.

      Ephesians 5:6-12
Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.
      Leviticus 20:13
If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them.
(This was written long before the Roman empire, as the Bible said there is nothing new under the sun, men have always gone astray in this way)
      Deuteronomy 12:29-32
“When the Lord your God cuts off before you the nations whom you go in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, take care that you be not ensnared to follow them, after they have been destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire about their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods?-that I also may do the same.’ You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way, for every abominable thing that the Lord hates they have done for their gods, for they even burn their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods. “Everything that I command you, you shall be careful to do. You shall not add to it or take from it
The Bible is clear people have been doing these things for a long time, and we are called to be set apart, which is why we don't do them. If a non save is gay and a supposed saved is gay, then what is the difference? How can we tell them apart? What is setting you apart from them if you think and behave as them?

There are so many more ways to be different from others. We are called to be loving, giving and forgiving people. We can be set apart by being radical in our love for others, because we do not need to focus on money, power or status, like the world does. And we can choose to be monogamous, believing in faithfulness as the only basis for relationships.

Even though "christianity" teaches brotherly Love as Jesus did, most "christians" are often judgmental towards those who don't share their beliefs or who are simply different; and most "christians" often don't recognize the hypocritical nature of their judgments.
In this way, Satan [the ego] has corrupted "christianity"; and most "christians" don't seem to recognize this or try to correct this.
Instead, most "christians" tend to fuel a sense of self-righteousness and superiority that too often leads to conflict with those who don't agree with them.
That is not what Jesus taught!
Jesus taught: Love your neighbor as yourself.
Jesus did not say: Love your neighbor only if he or she is like you; or Love your neighbor only if he or she is "christian"; or Love your neighbor only if he or she is heterosexual.
Jesus taught that our neighbor is not different than us, that everyone is the same in the eyes of God, that everyone is God; the same kingdom of heaven is within everyone.

This applies whether homosexuality is sinful or not. We should love all sinners and Christians alike: as Jesus would. I'm still not sure whether homosexuality is a sin or not but I do think that it doesn't really matter that much. I don't struggle with any gender dysphoria or sexual orientation questioning, so for me I just try to love and respect everyone else no matter how sinful they are. We are all sinners, only in different ways.

You must understand fully and clearly-that God possesses none of the human attributes.
The human characteristics of anger, threats and punishment-for instance-only pertain to the human condition.
So beware and do not allow yourself to be intimidated by "fear" and "threats" of God.
Remember, you are not on earth to "please" God, as religious teachers may tell you. You are on earth to "express" God and to make ever closer and closer contact with God-until you become free of the magnetic-emotional bondage.
When Jesus was on earth, he URGED people to UNCONDITIONALLY FORGIVE and to ABSTAIN from JUDGMENT, CRITICISM and CONDEMNATION.
But religious teachers have misinterpreted this as meaning you must "please" God by loving others and abstaining from negative emotions.
But this is not what Jesus meant at all. God is not "pleased" by our behavior.
We are masters of our fate in that we always "reap what we sow." All that Jesus has taught have been directed at giving us details of how to avoid sowing weeds in our vegetable patch-how to remain healthy, happy and prosperous.
The time will come in your spiritual development when you will awaken to the enormous gift you have in your head-the gift of creative, intelligent thinking, and you will also become aware of the enormous responsibility you bear towards the way you use it.

While this (transformation of desires) does happen, it is extremely rare. Most people who are offered 'conversion therapies' end up suffering poor mental health as a result, which is why it is outlawed in some countries and why medical organisations uniformly condemn it as bad practice. Some of the founders of the ex-gay ministries many years later repented of their actions. As an example, check out Courage UK: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courage_UK
Be extremely cautious of anyone offering any type of conversion therapy.

In addition to this video I’ve also watched your video in which you addressed the 1 Cor 6 passage. I appreciated your straightforward,
unemotional approach to both passages. Your assessment of the 1st
    century Roman world was helpful.
As a Bible teacher I am disinterested in necessarily
affirming homosexual behavior or denying it. Rather, I am interested in knowing
the truth; I want to know if either of these positions pleases or displeases
God. Living for God’s pleasure should be the highest calling of anyone who calls themselves a follower of Jesus.
If it can be successfully argued that the NT does not forbid
persons from engaging in modern-understood, committed, same-sex relationships
(which seems to be your position), it still might not be wise to teach that
these relationships glorify God (I’m not saying that you do). An argument of
silence might be a risky endeavor - especially for those who teach (Jas. 3:1).
Presently, I am swayed by the argument that all sexual
behavior that falls outside the boundaries of marriage is wrong. This would
include, but not be limited to, male/female, male/male, and female/female
activity. Marriage appears to be defined in Gen 2:24, affirmed by Jesus in Matt
19:4-6, and echoed by Paul (Eph. 5:31) as male/female.
I am continuing my quest for understanding.

    • @BibleandHomosexuality
      @BibleandHomosexuality  4 года назад +9

Hi featherdrop, thanks for your comment. You are right that in the videos I have made, I have not made a positive case for affirming committed same-sex relationships, but have made a case that they are not forbidden in the passages usually used.
A positive case can be made, and I hope to do this in a future video. In soundbite form, it is that Acts 10 shows us that where we see God's Spirit at work, we should be extremely cautious in saying that such things or people are unclean or forbidden. There is much more to say on this, and no room here.
An argument for keeping silent may appear to be neutral, but in fact would just maintain the status quo. By default, it would be supporting the position that same-sex marriages are wrong and unbiblical.
Thanks once again for your thoughtful response.

    • @MusicalRaichu
      @MusicalRaichu Год назад

Understanding, attitudes, purpose and expectations of marriage vary across time and place. There is no "traditional" marriage. You'll see this in the Bible itself, which spans several cultures.
In patriarchal societies, marriage was seen as a dominant male having authority over a submissive female Eph 5.21, 1 Pet 3.1. The gospel, however, laid the seed for slow change over time 1 Pet 3.7, Gal 3.28 so that today marriage is seen as a partnership of equals. We do not and should not practice "traditional" marriage today, in spite of rhetoric you hear.
Marriage of two men or two women made no sense under patriarchy, for who would submit to whom? But it makes sense today.

This is amazing! I am a christian and am pro lgbtqia+ and think this is a great counter to the common homophobia. Just as a question, i feel a common objection to what you have said may be “oh but these are possible meanings and interpretations. Even accounting for historical context its still a maybe this was what they potentially meant, but not a sure case”
Not saying i object just this could be an objection i can face. And a denfense i thought i can say to that is “buf the idea of homosexuality being bad is also another not sure interpretation too”
But they mag say “well when they were translating it over the years the original was long ago and the translated ones were also long ago. So they are quite close and maybe the first translation and interpretation was a better one cos they were closer to that time period and know the culture more than us in 2022. We are further away in time than the original translators so maybe we are less aware about their culture and language. So the ancient translation should be more accurate”
Again i am not on the opposite sides. Just taking a look at opposing points of view to be able to reach closer to the truth. But i feel that the objections i beought up can be disputed and debunked. Thank you!

i knew that the words in 1 cor 6.9 were obscure and their relevance to this issue today was dubious. and i could not see how rom 1 could not possibly be referring to loving relationships. but it puzzled me what he was on about. until i researched ancient rome and figured it out.
in fact more recently i looked up rom 1 in greek and was shocked to see how it's sometimes been misinterpreted eg
    - it says "males" not "men" when i've heard some claim it wasn't about boys
    - it says "burned with appetite" when some claim it includes romantic relationships
    - the expression "one another" does not necessarily imply mutual desire in greek as i've heard someone claim to justify that Paul is talking about consensual acts. even when it was consensual, it would have been prostitoots doing it for money, not samesecs attraction.

Can you make a video responding to the argument of: “This has been the official church teaching for 2000 years! Why change it now?”
My usual counter argument is that the early church used to think the sun revolves around the earth, and that many Christians used to believe slavery was ok by Biblical standards. I’m curious as to what you have to say about this, thank you for your hard work!

    • @BibleandHomosexuality
      @BibleandHomosexuality  Год назад +1

Hi, I don't know if I'll do a video on it, but my answer would probably revolve around the fact that the church hasn't been asked to seriously consider this issue until the last few decades. Effectively, this is the first time that the Church has had a proper discussion about whether same-sex marriage etc should be classified as sexual immorality or not.

    • @MusicalRaichu
      @MusicalRaichu Год назад

Unforunately the answer is complex. This is the first time in history that we've had an objective scientific understanding that two men or two women can be in a committed relationship almost identical to a man and a woman. Also, it is misleading to identify modern teaching against homoxesuality with traditional church teaching.
In the early days of the faith, there were cultural issues that made both secs between two men and same-secs marriage problematic. As you read in the NT itself, marriage was understood as a dominant man and submissive woman. Two men/women made little sense. A man penetrated by another man was seen as taking a female role thus reneging all his male rights, a serious matter with social and legal implications. But the seeds planted by the gospel ("in Christ there is no male and female", "women as joint-heirs") have finally borne fruit now that we consider marriage a partnership of equals. It's only in recent times that it has made cultural sense.
Moreover, the church early on developed a deep suspicion of secs, promoting the belief that it should only be for reproduction. This seems to be the primary reason for the church's traditional rejection of secs and marriage between two men/women, nothing to do with what the Bible says. The idea that homoxesuality is inherently wrong dates from the mid 20th cent. The traditional belief is against so-do-my, not homoxesuality. Since most people now understand that sec has far more relevance to human relationships than reproduction, both secs and marriage between two men/women now make sense.
Furthermore, understanding why two men/women would want to have secs has eluded us. Sometimes it was seen as excessive lust, sometimes men did it deliberately as an act of domination to make themselves feel masculine, more recently it was seen as a mental disorder, so people thought ill of it. But in recent decades our scientific understanding has markedly improved, and we now see nothing pathological about it. Two men/women can be in a healthy, loving relationship just like a man and woman. New knowledge also played a part in the change of mind.
      Does this help?

@@blacklivesmatterc7403 You know there are many versions of the Bible, right? Some of them are incomplete, partial, and complete Bibles. This heavily indicated two things: neither Lord God Himself or Lord Jesus Christ Himself created the book and the Bible has been made by multiple generations. Many are translated and interpreted differently from one and another. Just using the English-language Bibles, that alone suggested they were created by men that spoke English, here are examples to support my claims. There are two versions of KJV, one made in 1611 and another made in 1769, spoken in Shakespearean language. KJV is famously known to be the "Authorized Version" in both UK and USA. Well, there's the Matthew's Bible, which was made in 1537. That Bible was made earlier than both KJV Bibles. There is the Woman's Bible, made both 1895 and 1898, after the KJV. And recent Bibles, like RNJB (completed) made in 2019, MCT recently made in 2019, and LSV made in 2020 😕 What makes any Bible made in English translation anymore credible than other Bibles made in different languages? I also want to point out the 1st Bible made in English-language is the Tyndale Bible, made in 1494-1536. Buuuuuut guess which Bible is considered to be the most accurate written, closest to the ancient manuscripts found thousands and thousands of years ago. It's the Codex Vaticanus, which has been historically and scientific proven as COMPLETE Bible in early 4th-century. I also want to point out that Bible isn't written in English, and is preserved currently in the Vatican Library. Oh, and the Geneva Bible is considered to be the most historically translations of the Bible into English, preceding the KJV. That actually says a lot. Shouldn't claim anything without being historically accurate, I'm a Christian and would rather hear the message of Lord God myself, thanks 😇

I have not seen you back any of your claims with scripture. In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Paul makes up a word Arsenokoitai which means “man-bed” literally. What’s interesting is Paul made up this word and he took it from Leviticus 20:13. If you read Leviticus 20:13 in Greek, you see the same word but as “arsenos koiten”. It’s a Biblical word he used, so Paul was referring to homosexuality in 1 Corinthians 6:9. You have no scripture from the Bible to back up your claims, and anyone can do the same thing you do to justify their sin. Catholics justify their idolatry to Mary, Mormons justify their belief on becoming gods, and anyone can take verses on not getting drunk to mean something else and say “You have to read it in context” which really means “You have to twist the scripture and take it out of context.” People were put to death for having sex with other men in Old Testament, because the law said the act of men having sex with men is an abomination. If a sign says “NO SMOKING” would you take that literally as to not smoke in that area or would you think the context was missing?

1 Cor 6.11 says "such were some of you", but people are incapable of changing who they're attracted to or removing their God-given need for companionship. Therefore, whatever male-bedder means, it does not mean homoxesual. A woman who likes women is hardly a male bedder. You misinterpret the Bible by using an anachronistic category.

In contrast to the Southern Baptists, I belong to an American Baptist church that created a whole branch of the denomination that accepts gays and lesbians (LGBTQ+). From a philosophical point of view, Christ taught that loving God and loving your neighbor are the two great commandments that fulfill and really replace all the Old Testament laws as you have indicated. Paul in the love chapter of First Corinthians says that of faith, hope and love, that love is the most important Christian value. So, all the discriminatory and exclusive kind of rules in the Bible should be subservient to Christian love. If a Christian really believes in Christian love, he/she would understand and accept that. I think many Christian churches will eventually come around to understanding this and become lovers of all people instead of judgmental haters. With the exception of disbelief, is there any sin that Christ does not forgive?

The Bible was written in patriarchal culture. Men had the power to abuze and hurt people. Women with women didn't hurt anyone so there was no reason to mention it. But men married to women would have secs with men and boys too, and by Roman times it had become abusiv. That's why it came to Paul's attention.

Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder."
    -Matthew 19:4‭-‬6 KJV
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: and likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. Jesus didn't said the word homosexual because it's a modern word, he did mention about Sodomy and Gomorrah, which are Describing homosexuality, in ancient word; therefore, word Pornea in Greek means Horlot which is prostitution.

Hi Nathan, thanks for the response. First, in referring to couples,I said something like 'But they mainly remained hidden from the rest of society - a secret that if it became known would destroy the reputation and honour of at least one of the couple.'
We have knowledge of a handful of male-male marriages over a period of hundreds of years. However, a few points:
Such marriages were not considered legal marriages by the state.
There was generally a hostile response from the rest of society to such weddings.
In particular, one of the males involved was perceived to have lost their gender as being male, and had become 'the woman'. The hostility was generally directed at this person.
The reason such weddings were deprecated was because the culture perceived relationships in active/masculine and passive/feminine categories. One man was giving up being a 'man' in such relationships in the eyes of society.
For more information, check out Williams (1999, 2010, 279-286).
So, as I said, any relationship between men destroyed the honour of at least one of the men involved.
      Hope you find this helpful.

Hi 'Sean'. I have videos on Leviticus, on the gospels, on Romans, and on 1 Corinthians (which also addresses 1 Timothy). I cover Jude in various comments in my video on Sodom, and also in the associated website page. Hebrews talks about sexual immorality; we disagree about whether same-sex marriages are sexually immoral and relevant to these verses.

I'm sorry, but you are wrong. I am a former pastor, have a masters and doctorate in Biblical studies and a former professor in a Bible college. I am now a clinical chaplain. As a Spiritual leader I have delt with people struggling with this issue. I took it upon myself to research this topic and nail down the truth about the Bible and homosexuality. Before you start thinking I am a just an old, traditional, good-ol boy, from some backwoods Baptist church and I am 'closed minded' or whatever, the last five years of our pastorship was in a non-denominational church. As an evangelist and professor, I have ministered in and taught people from practically all denominations in existence. I conferred with the smartest Bible teachers and theologians on the planet. I spent time reviewing and studying with a professor that can speak fluent Greek and is a foremost expert in the New Testament Greek texts. I studied the Hebrew language diligently. I conferred with three different experts in the Hebrew language, even one Hebrew expert from a secular University that was an expert in religion that did NOT even claim to be a Christian, but was STILL one of the foremost scholars on Biblical translations. I spent 6 months studying with two researchers that were experts in Paulinian doctrines that had done a PhD dissertation on the topic of sexual orientations in the Bible. When I got my undergrad degree from a secular University, before attending a highly accredited and respected seminary, my minor studies was in Sociology of Religion. I was so schooled in the topic that I actually did a research paper on the topic that won a major term paper award. Mind you, that was even in a secular University (Kennesaw State University), the 3rd largest U in the state of Georgia (United States).
    I'm telling you all of this, not to brag, but to let you know that I have researched everything there is know about this topic and what the Bible truly says on the topic. After all of this, here is the conclusion;
The Bible is clear....homosexuality is a sin. The original texts are not mistranslated. It is not interpreted wrong. It is not 'bad theology.' People have tried to twist it to appear this way. But the Old testament and new testament clearly tell us that God tells us that it is a sin.
You can pretend that it doesn't, but it does. I am not someone who just thinks that homosexuality is 'disgusting'. I think English peas are disgusting, but that doesn't make it a sin to eat them. It has nothing to do with what we 'think' about homosexuality. In fact, I had a young lesbian girl ask me 'Why does it have to be a sin? I am not hurting anyone. We love each other and we are not trying to push our lifestyle on anyone.' I had to answer her with the hard truth; It's a sin, only because said it was. Why? I'm not sure. I could offer theories, but the reality is, there are some things that are sin because God said 'I don't like it and don't do it.'
Does the Bible say that homosexuality is an 'abomination'? Yes it does. That was a focal point of my research to determine if that's what the Bible says and the original texts are clear. He includes that in a list of things that he said is an abomination (something that is detestable to Him).
Now it is NOT the only thing that is an abomination and I am not one who believes that He hates homosexuality more than other sins. The Bible says in Proverbs that a 'proud heart' is an abomination. There are many things that are abominations to God. God does not like or love the sin of homosexuality, but He didn't love my sin either. He forgave me and helped me to change and He will do the same for homosexuals if they will seek His forgiveness and His help in turning away from that lifestyle. He does not hate homosexuals. He does not hate drug dealers and serial killers and terrorists. He loves them and wants them to turn away from path they are on and seek paths of righteousness. God hates sin.
Does God create people to be homosexuals? No. We are not born to be homosexual and are left without a choice. We are all born into sin. And we ALWAYS have a choice with everything we do. You might wonder 'Why is someone attracted to the same sex.'? But the flesh is attracted to many things that are sinful. God gives us the strength, help and Spiritual guidance to turn away from any sin and seek out paths of righteousness.
Some say, 'There is homosexuality in the animal kingdom, so that proves that it is NOT abnormal.' But some animals eat their young, does that make it normal? We cannot lean on the animal kingdom, we cannot lean on science, not if we want to walk in the will of God.
This may be sombering to you. I'm sorry, but I'm telling you, you would be hard pressed to find anyone who has researched the actual Biblical texts and Biblical truth on this topic more than me. And I'm telling you the truth and the truth is, the Bible says it is a sin.
You can choose to ignore this. You can choose to NOT abide and live by Biblical principle. That is your prerogative and your choice. But you cannot say that it is not scriptural to say that homosexuality is a sin and God wants us to turn away from it. I researched it NOT out of anger, or hatred or whatever. I did it for people alot like you. To help you and reveal what really is the truth on the subject. It always bothered me that many Christians have tried to justify various things in the Bible by saying it was 'mistranslated' or 'misinterpreted' or 'bad theology'. So, I chose to take a chunk of my life and research this to get down to the bottom of it and reveal what the Bible really says.
Again, you can chose to live by what it says, or you can discard it and do something else. But don't say that it is NOT a sin. Because it is.
Also, I have known many that have turned away from that lifestyle and live a heterosexual, normal, righteous life. It is more common than many would have you to believe. A friend of mine who had AIDS turned away from that lifestyle and He has a wonderful testimony that he stopped listening to what everyone from all the different arguments were saying and he said he sought the Holy Spirit on his own and God spoke to him and told him that if he would turn away and forsake that lifestyle, he would help him just like he would help drug addict turn away from addiction.
Anyway, I could go on and on, but I hope this helps you. You can attack me or simply choose to ignore this, but you'll be ignoring Biblical truth. Seek God, if you truly are a Christian and His Spirit will do exactly what Christ said it would do;' 'Guide you into all truth.' God bless.

Ask Him if homosexuality is a sin and something you should seek His deliverance from. But be careful. I don't know you, but I got a feeling you are at risk of falling into the trap that ensnares many; when we seek God for answers, we only tend to hear what we WANT to here. You accuse me of doing the same. Except I'm presenting clear arguments across multiple videos. Each video provides a link to my website, where at the end of each article is the scholarship on which I'm basing my points. I also provide a separate longer bibliography on the website.
So people don't have to trust me. They can go and check, if they really want to. They can read the scholarship. They can examine my arguments in detail.

@@BibleandHomosexuality Think about what you're saying. You are saying don't trust me, trust these other people that have researched the topic and believe them. But why should we trust them instead of you. If you got your information from them, then I guess we are to trust those people, but why should we trust them either? Because they are 'doctors' and have done research. But I am a doctor and I have done research. Why should anyone trust them and not me? You see what I'm getting at.
At the end of the day, you are expecting people to put trust in other people, or the 'scholarship' as you called them. So, they should put trust in those people and NOT me or even you? And why should they? Is their word any better than yours or mine? The people watching your video don't know anything about you, or the people you got your info from anymore than they know me. How does anyone know that I am not an axe murderer (I'm not by the way...lol) But they don't know that. And we don't know anything about you or the people you got your info from. How do we know those websites are legit? How do we know that you and those 'scholars' don't work for the anti--Christ, for crying outloud, and your mission is to deceive the people of the world? And you could say the same thing about me, and I can accept that. You don't know me. But the Bible says that the Spirit of God will guide us into truth. It will 'bear witness' of the truth.
So, all I did was present research, from people that are as known to the casual viewer as the scholars you reference. But the casual viewer don't know if their research is any more real than the info I presented. They may say they have 'evidence' and did 'research' and 'studies' etc., but we don't know if they are telling the truth. And if you say, we'll they also presented references....but how do we know those references are real either? Again, everything takes faith.
All I'm saying is, let the viewer listen to you, let them listen to me. Let them go to the websites that you say you reference, heck, let them listen to anyone they want. But let God confirm.
So, then.... here's the solution; Let people hear you out, let them hear me out, let them hear WHOEVER out. But at the end of the day, everyone is going to have to make a decision based on trust and faith.
I encourage anyone and everyone to pray and ask God who is right. Ask God what the Bible says. Does it mean what it says when it says it's a sin, or not? Based on my research, yes. But I don't want anyone taking my word for it. Ask God and He will confirm the truth. No more than they should just trust you or the people you referenced. Let God confirm who is right...wouldn't you agree?
