- TREND ALERT: Another Bears in Games: Neo project drops! Bears in Games Presents Great Moments in Queer Gaming History is a look at famous, obscure and notorious queer characters or situations in games, and for the first episode I'm taking a look at Ash: the high-heeled leatherman from the Japanese version of Streets of Rage 3: Bare Knuckle 3. Is Ash an offensive stereotype? Queer appreciation? A joke? A trendsetting agender icon?
Also: we look at HARD GAY Razor Ramon HG, Crime Fighters 2, Rival Turf!, and a glimpse into the magical year of 1994.
This was supposed to be a shorto, but ended up being a medium-o. That's because I like to ramble.

Keep up all the good work! :)
Saw this on twitter and easiest sub I've ever done
Thank you! (I was considering "But I'm a Dom!" as a reply but that might be rude.)
I look forward to more in this series!
Yay! I'm hopefully going to have another KOW out first though, I'm working my way through GTA III!
I liked Ash when i first learned about him but that was when it was Ash or nothing. Even by the time MGS2 had a bisexual vampire, my eyebrow was raising slightly higher towards Ash.
I definitely would need to do an episode on him for this series.
You should check out the Japanese version of Crime Fighters for the arcade if you haven't already. Look out for what happens on the train. lol.
Crime Fighters 1??
@@BearsinGamesNeo-qt5ww Yeah, the first Crime Fighters arcade game. Just don't let a particular bad guy on the train get too close to you lol. Edit: Just saw footage of Crime Fighters 2 for the first time. Puts the first one to shame. lol.
haha yeah I put some of Crime Fighters 2 in the video, I only got two levels in but it was enough haha
Game devs gota learn universally that if they want gays to flock to their game just add a beefy guy in wrestling tights and it wont even get you weird looks from anyone else, its a win win really.
this is what the Capcom sprite designer Akiman understood from the start. And for the lady-lovers, he also designed Chun Li's thighs
I missed you.
I'm baaaaaack!
@@BearsinGamesNeo-qt5ww Do Poison next!
Did you ever play the SNES game "The Peacekeepers" from '93? It was a fun, obvious "rip-off Final Fight, eh, Sega? Well we'll rip-off your rip-off!".
Another Jaleco classic! I have, but I remember getting lost in the sewers which might be the opening or second level.
@@BearsinGamesNeo-qt5ww - didn't Echo play almost exactly like Blaze?
@@BearsinGamesNeo-qt5ww Oh no, the sewer maze was in the previous game, Brawl Brothers.
(also, i almost forgot to say that the maze-like levels (yes, there are *two* of those) are only on the western version; in the Japanese version, Rushing Beat Ran, every level is as straightforward as one would expect from a beat 'em up)
This popped randomly on my main page feed today. Love the concept and great video, but do you really have to use a word as harmful as queer? It's a slur that still cuts VERY VERY deep to a LOT of LGB people, including myself.
Yeah, I really do have to use it. I learned years ago that folks, including myself, will react differently to reclaimed terms, and there are some that still grate me, but the younger folks have had a different experience with it than an oldie like me. I like it because it's a wide umbrella term that embraces multiple experiences of queerness. Also: don't forget the T!
wtf is this
Oh, now this I can answer! It's the third in the Streets of Rage series by Sega, though I spend a lot of the video talking about the Japanese version, Bare Knuckle 3. I hope that helps!
ewwww
