Streets of Rage is one of the most important video game franchises to me. The 1st time I opened it up on Christmas day of 1992, that time I was able to get hold of the long-awaited Streets of Rage 2, the rediscovery of Streets of Rage 3 during my Retro collecting years, and of course the latest release.... Streets of Rage 4
For me, no game in the same genre has resulted in more beers being knocked back with friends playing through these excellent titles than the ones found in this series!
This video is my opportunity to do the series justice and talk about its long history in Streets Of Rage: The Complete History 2020 edition

What do you think of Limited Run releasing SofR4 only for it to be announced that Europe will be getting its own release through a different publisher? I'm super pissed off tbh! Ive paid all that extra in shipping and as far as i can tell, the cover art is better on the European release and you also get a booklet and key ring!

Easily my favorite beat em up franchise. I’m so happy we finally got a 4th game.
Couldn't agree more
I remember as a kid, my best friend got Streets of Rage 2 before I did when it came out. One night over the Easter holidays when she came to sleep over at my house, she brought her copy of the game with her. Once we started playing it we just couldn't get enough of it. We spent the whole night playing it until about 6 in the morning when we eventually fell asleep after completing it for what must have been about the 100th time. I would eventually get my copy on my 11th birthday in August. We're still very close friends and both have Streets of Rage 4 on the PS4, we've been thinking about having another get together with the game after the pandemic ends like we did all those years ago, though it probably won't be another all-nighter this time.
Y'all should recreate the sleepover for nostalgia... You don't know how valuable of a friend you have and how meaningful that relationship is
Zan saying "Power up" when he does his special move will haunt me for eternity. My dad and uncle used to play this all the time and my uncle would just spam Zan's special move.
I always found the Bare Knuckle III voices for Zan strange. His *SPARK* voice clip sounds decidedly... not like an old man.
Some of us treat Streets of Rage almost like a religion. Thank you for this
Streets of Rage series will forever be my all time favorite beat em up hands down and wonderful video.
I recognised Joe from Game Sack and Kim Justice's voices in there. It's like a supergroup of my favourite RUclipsrs

This should have way more views than it has. This was an incredible look into one of my favorite childhood franchises. Amazing job! I can't wait to watch your other videos on the different franchises
It's amazing to see how far you've come, Slope. You're an absolute legend for providing all of this research for us old heads. Here's to endless more!
Huh, this isn't the video I meant to click on but i think this one was way better than what i would have watched. Great passion, great presentation.
Awesome video! I thought I knew everything about the Streets of Rage series possible but there were lots of new facts in here so big up your excellent research. Love these super in-depth histories and this one particularly takes me right back to the early 90s Mean Machines days and being so excited for any screenshot or little snippet of information about Streets of Rage 2 and, later, 3 coming out. Bare Knuckle III is very underrated and the soundtrack is almost as good as SoR2 for me. Nice one!
Yeah, I agree #3 is the one that peeps really do give an unjustified hard time too. Thanks so much for the nice comment bud
High Five dude.
I watched your first complete history years ago and loved it, I couldn't believe it was that inferior and in need of renewing but you've gone above and beyond with this amazing video sequel/remake.
Sega should have bought Remake and released it. That’s not unheard of, it’d be similar to what happened with Ms. Pac-Man
Looking back on it, it's kind of nice that they waited EVEN LONGER and brought the series back the way they did. Instead of trying to put out another Pac-Man or repackaging the old SoR games, they put everything into _SoR4_ and the game is definitely better for it.
@@dallyink7412
Pretty sure they've repackaged the games more than a couple of times
But I think even tho it would have been cool to have Sega buy remake, would it have been as expansive, or would Sega have pulled back on some features
@@dupersuper6516 It probably wouldn't have been as "expansive" as SoRR, no. They could have tried to do it themselves but opted to refine the core of the series and focus on in-depth mechanics instead of getting caught up on a universal roll and a bunch of filler content.
@@dallyink7412
Now hold on there buddy, we don't know what sor5 will look like, 4 was about playing it safe and respecting the fans by building off sor2 (the majority favorite) but 3 was a mechanically better game, it just got poor reception in the west cause we goofed it up by augmenting difficulties and nerfing key details.
Sor4 is a great game, work of art, but that doesn't depreciate the refinement of remake, with 5 they could very well decide pick up where 3/remake left off, we don't know, so I'd hold off on negatively connotating 3 and remake
@@dupersuper6516 I don't hold any negativity towards SoR3 or Remake. They're all wonderful games but it seems like a lot of people have been getting hung up on certain things, leading them to downplay or overlook what SOR4 is actually doing. The idea that you feel they were just "playing it safe" and somehow find it to be mechanically inferior to 24 year old game is pretty good evidence of that.
High five! ✋ I love SOR 2, listening to the SOR4 soundtrack while driving, and this complete history.
Love that you used some of Iceferno Pro’s “Streets of Wrath” music in the video. 💯👍🏽
Hes incredibly talented
One of the best beat-em ups, Streets of Rage 1 and 2 is one of my childhood favorites along with Final Fight
Best complete history ever. Lot of hard work, congratulations
My absolute number ONE game series. Ever. I find myself watching this Documentary over and over again! Your videos are amazing brutha!!!
In my humble opinion this is your best work so far.
Thanks so much mate. I agree tho :P
Thanks for this. Got RetroArch running just to play sor2
*ANYTIME* you make a video like this it makes my day, thank you!
Just revisited this, after the original video popped up in my recommended. It's always so cool to see how humble and well put together your statements are, while giving both pros and cons. I can also tell your excitement for the subject, but it obviously didn't get in the way of what I've already stated.
Congrats to all of your well earned success, and I totally recognized some of those voices for the narrations. It's really cool hearing a bit of a cameo.
Huge Hi-Five! :D
23:56 Seeing the names Wolf, Hawk and Blaze, stirred something deep in my memory and i remember seeng this screen shot in a magazine my cousin had and then playing the game a few months later and assuming that that must've been a different game.
Thanks for that odd memory plucked from somewhere deep in my mind from around early 1990 :)
Those were hard to find. Put in the footage at the very last minute :P so glad you enjoyed
@@slopesgameroom Much appreciated for the video and the reply :) And HUGE congratulations on having the dev team watch your original video!
See you around on a LiveStream soon dude 👍
That's Axel & Adam's original names
Why Jim Sterling is in your video?
That you ever thought your actual voice isn’t solid freakin’ gold strikes me as hilarious, for some reason.
Thank you so much for this video. It was very comprehensive and insightful.
I only had SoR 1 but it was one of my favourite games and that soundtrack has stayed with me for years. Until I was in my late teens I didn't know anyone who knew/appreciated the franchise, luckily thanks to internet forums and RUclips I found fellow fans who shared my opinions.
I'm so glad that SoR4 exists and it is as good as it is feeling nostalgic and a little fresh at the same time. Hopefully this'll lead to a sequel and more forgotten Sega franchises coming back.
This was an incredible retrospective, thank you!
23:25 Oh wow, that's the funniest, sweetest and most wholesome thing I've heard about an ultra-violent street brawler game ever.
Oh man, high five! This video was very detailed and comprehensive in terms of the history of this franchise. Nice little nod to the Game Sack guy who did some of the quotes. Your Streets of rage videos had me curious and now this one is by far my favorite that you've done. Well done dude!
Streets of Rage 3 is the only game in the series I've ever played, and I was totally obsessed with it.
59:13 You press just a tad longer to pick up health items while you are holding a weapon.
Thank you so much for your hard work on this video, and providing a rare Complete History update. SOR means a great deal to me and I'm happy to have lent a hand to the video!
Your tunes made a great addition to it all. nice work mate.
Your music really did help with this
Happy to hear! Thanks guys. :D
Hello Slope, this video is awesome! You did a wonderful job with talking about the history and everything about Streets of Rage. This video inspired me to buy the Nintendo 3Ds versions, as well as Sega Genesis Classics for my Switch. Next on my Wishlist is Streets of Rage 4!
Late to the party, really dove into Streets of Rage 4 over the past month & loving it!
This retrospective was outstanding!
Hopefully it won't be long until Streets of Rage 5 gets announced and then you will have to make this video all over again for a third time! lol
I love the Renegade/Super Dodge Ball art style for the sprites. Good video, mate.
Thank you for doing the third game justice with your coverage this time around (although you still didn't mention all of the new mechanics like dashing, rolling, and the special bar). I consider "Bare Knuckle III" (the Japanese version only, of course) to actually be even better than the second game.
A lot of people do too. It's a solid entry that hardcore fans should defo check out
the fact that a different boss was orignally planned for stage 5 in SOR1 reminds me that a different boss was also planned for stage 1 in SOR2. instead of fighting Barbon, players would instead fight two red-coloured Zamzas. it was changed to Barbon because the devs felt that fighting multiple high-speed clawed bosses at once might have been a bit too hard for the first stage and especially for new players
Damn, all of the cameos in this video from other RUclips content creators are great!
It's definitely a great idea to have this level of an updated history when a series has grown so much. Both Streets of Rage and Complete History have grown so much, and combined that has made this one of the best videos you've ever done, dude.
Ahhhhhh stain42... you are a long time viewer! That means a lot bud :D
I always called "Toxic" to the reskin of Blaze for some reason, it kinda sounds very 90's and i think it was because Poison is quite the recognizable evil lady and of course we have our "Poison" in Streets of Rage but for some reason everytime i played the first game and fought against Blaze's recolor i always called her Toxic.
This video was made by an actual GOD! You my good sir are a god legend!
Ahhhhhhhh thanks mate :D
DJ Slopes, I wanted to thumb-up this video twice, but silly RUclips won't allow it though! 😉
Dude, thank you so very much for helping me appreciate this wonderful series, despite the fact I never grew up with it.
You’re such a passionate Streets of Rage fan, and I can’t keep track of all of the awesome facts I’ve shared with my friends and family that I learned from your video.
I’ve even shared your video with my friends and family who want to know as much details about the Streets of Rage series as possible!
Thank you so much!
As a fellow research scientist who also goes to great lengths to reach out to tons of people, you have my respect, good sir!
Have yourself a wonderful day!
💥👊🏻👍🏻😃
God, the soundtrack on this series is god mode. I never owned a Sega but I had a friend (J-WU-YIN FTW!) who had Streets of Rage 2 and DAMN did we put some hours into this one!
So glad these old games are on Steam.
I will never forget that stage 1 opening music of SoR1...then the BOSS music kicked in, both and exciting and intimidating letting u know shit is about to get real...its hard to tell kids today how awesome this was hearing it for the first time
Oooo, i feel you buddy! Awesome ost
I hope in the near future they make more games like this soon I can't wait. HIGH FIVE
Thank you. Much appreciated. This is the retrospective that the SoR series needed. I grew up with Sor2 and have played it sad to say, religiously. After collecting many, many games and systems, i still regret selling off my genesis about a decade ago along with the stuff i had on it, but i only really regret selling off the machine and Sor2.
Ahhhhhhh cheers buddy
It's far too easy to even find Street of Rage Remake (pretty sure its always in the top 5 search results).
the only part of the Streets Of Rage franchise i missed out on were the fleetway comics. and now there is talk of a possible Streets of Rage 5, a live action Streets Of Rage movie from the creators of the Sonic Movies and John wick films, and a Streets of Rage anime series
I still hope one day SoRR gets an official release from Sega. Would be a great companion piece to Sonic Mania...plus being able to play it on the Switch would be awesome.
Fantastic video! SoR2 was my favourite as a kid and still one of my all time top games, so it's been a real treat to see a comprehensive video on the series.
I’m extremely happy that Streets of Rage 4 came out, but where is our much deserved Golden Axe 4? What about Ristar 2? How about Arrow Flash 2? There’s a lot more games SEGA needs to revive.
A new Golden Axe game would be hype af.
This dude single handedly predicted the future without knowing at first. It's quite interesting that sega really took influence to make sor4 just by looking at his previous history video of the sor trilogy.
Can you do a 2020 edition of The Complete History of Double Dragon?
One of my favorites games ever. Also for the music. :D
Can you tell me what are the song and the artist at 50:57 ? Thank you :D
The would be the beast of rage album from polybius... check the description. Great artist
Was blown away by Streets of Rage 4 and contrary to the apparent accepted trend I never got to try SoR2 as my local video rental never stocked it. I skipped straight to the 3rd and enjoyed the higher difficulty of the story mode. Ended up getting SoR2 many years later and found it to be great fun. So glad they finally pulled it together and got the fourth pushed out, as I loved the open source reboot of the trilogy that got cease and desisted! You'll find me in the top 20 of the first SoR game high score rankings. Absolutely adored the series.
Cheers for the update video to include the fourth!
SEGA should of just worked with the person making the Streets Of Rage Remake and released it to purchase at the time which would of been way better than them just re releasing the original games which is what they were doing at the time... also SEGA seems to have have a more positive reception towards fan games these days compared to back then so unfortunately the creator of the remake just got unlucky as I guarantee if it was released today they probably would not really have an issue with it. Another thing about the remake that just baffles me is that SEGA knew for years that it was been made and didn't even step in to stop it until he released it... like what the hell SEGA?... In my opinion though calling it a remake really undersells it as it's more of a re imagining of all the three games but way better in my honest opinion... I mean it's just way better than the originals in every possible way and is the best Streets Of Rage game even though it's not technically official as it's a fan game.
Street if Rage 2 was literally destroyed Final Fight on the Super NES! The programmers perfected the Genesis and squeezed out all of graphic capabilities, with two player cooperative play! The soundtrack was great too! I still think the first Streets of Rage soundtrack was better, but both games set the tone, and I admit, I still listen to them on my iPhone to tie very day. Great video, thank you.
Awesome update video! I had seen your first history of Streets of Rage video years ago and recently rewatched it lol I love beat 'em ups
Cracking video! Some of best content I've ever seen on RUclips.
Ahhhhh thats awesome to read. Thanks 😊
Streets of rage 2 intro always scared me 😂 mr x hands coming over the city he was so Op and his bodyguard
What a video! Streets of rage is one of my favorite franchises and this was just perfect. well done slopes
Thanks mate
High five! This series is near and dear to my heart, though back in the day it was not in my Genesis collection, you best believe as soon as I had the means I fixed that problem. Played SoRR, and just _had_ to buy the Limited Run physical special release of SoR4, what a great time to be alive indeed! Thank you for your incredibly fun look back at this important piece of Sega history!
Well done, mate. Great retrospective. Watched your livestream of SOR4 as well. Hope you've managed to work those blitz and specials into your combos!
Bloody hell, this is an EPIC! Amazing work. Tops the original in every possible way. You can be super proud of this. Bravo, sir!
Cheers buddy
I really am pretty proud of it
Holy crap. Your nan had a 35" TV in *1992*?!?? That's pretty next level for back then. Nobody I knew had a TV remotely close to that big in those days.
Yeah she had a kicks system... I think she just agreed with every the guy in dixons was telling her
Thank you for this video. I recently got into Streets of Rage via the fourth game on the switch while visiting a friend and got it for myself. It's been so fun, the dlc they've added is so good for replayability and everything. I wanted to learn more about the history of this game for I wasn't around back when the older games released and never got to experience them. This did exactly just that. Thank you for allowing me to appreicate this great lineage of games!
The first SOR complete history was the first video of yours I watched- been watching every week since. Always the best stuff, and it's great to have an updated version. I'm in love with SOR4- It's got everything the originals had, but this time, I got to play it through for the first time with my daughter as player 2. It's now her favourite game (she loved the others in any case), but these memories will now last for her life-time, as those playing the first when I was years old have for me.
That's sure h an awesome memory you just built mate :D huge thanks for the longtime support
Daniel Ibbertson you’re welcome dude. I love your videos. I’ll be here til the end 👍🏻
Fantastic job, dude! This is a great retrospective/tribute to in my opinion, the greatest beat’em up franchise in gaming history!
SOR4 Intro: shows Axel running
Axel in-game: can't run
Streets of Rage 2 was hands down my favourite game on the Mega Drive. SOR4 has lived up to that legend, which I never thought I'd say. It's definitely got areas where it can improve, but I think many of us could only dream of having a sequel like this. It could have been so much worse.
Yeah, it's been so long that we all have visions of the sequel and #4 did an incredible job of living up to the name
Stoked to see this go up mate, brilliant video as always. It's like the channel just came full circle :)
High five man, My cousin and I played the hell out of SOR and SOR2, I always think back to when we managed to get a copy of SOR2 the day before it was released as we had a friend that worked at Electronics Boutique in Wolverhampton, after several hours of gaming we managed to complete it on our first go through, something that gave me great bragging rights when I was 12.
Thanks for the video, I'm really happy that SOR4 is great, so many revisited franchises don't turn out so well.
Amazing video man!! Love all the fellow RUclips cameos. Erin plays! Nice surprise
Great update to the video that brought me here to begin with! I think you're absolutely right. Streets Of Rage was everything we wanted, when it launched. I remember all my SNES friends getting so jealous. All the moves available, with your opponents, with your partner. So amazingly good. And that soundtrack. I think it's still the strongest, melodically. I could go on about this series almost as long as you have; just nowhere near as well🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Think I'll go marathon them. Right now. After this.
It may have been a different story had the SNES version of "Final Fight" not been so gimped, but yeah even the first "Streets of Rage" was the better game. Just having 2 player co-op was in itself a massive advantage.
@52:30, love that subway interior stage. Reminds me of Final Fight. Hope we get a stage like that in Streets of Rage 5
Finally! I waited for this for years! And true enough, I did subscribe to you because of your "complete history". This feels so historical to finally see this video up!
Awesome video! Street of rage 2 is the best beat 'em up on any system even arcades.
one the best games i've ever played, thank you for this video!
High Five! SOR 1 is the first game I ever beat as a child. Your original retrospective was what got me started watching your channel, great to see it keep getting better. Cheers!

High Five my dude, First time viewer. I had a mega drive for my 8th birthday back in 93 it came with SOR1, GoldenAxe and Revenge of Shinobi. I was 35 yesterday. I’ll never forget the feeling of seeing that pine pot logo... to be fair I seeped from the pee pee seeing your neon pine pot light. I just discovered your Complete History series and I’m thrilled! I watched the Shinobi one earlier, watching this now, and I’ve added 18 additional Complete History videos to one of my gaming playlists. I have hours and hours of fascinating, well done documentaries on retro gaming to look forward to and enjoy. These take me back to simpler times.

High Five Daniel! Wanted to watch this the minute it came out, but decided to wait until I could devote a solid hour to watch it all in one sitting. Streets of Rage 2 has been my favorite game for as long as I can remember, and I'm so glad to see a fourth and love this video that you made on the series as well as the original one and honestly all your videos. Again HIGH FIVE!!!
Yeah a lot of people do that. High 5 mate
I rarely comment, but this vid is very good: thorough research, great editing, nice understanding of the different game mechanics and subtle differences in the different versions of the game, and of the cultural phenomenon that these titles are. Well done. One can feel the personal involvement and passion for the series (i remember everything very similarly, from my first SEGA GENESIS on... nostalgia). Thanks for the work of putting this together.
I especially appreciate the inclusion of the old design docs for the first games, and the testimonials or comments and interview bits from the developers. I was a bit afraid the masterpiece *Streets of Rage REMAKE* wouldn't be included, but I'm so glad it is [ 51:39 ]. I also loved seeing the different mutual influences in the game design, and the inspiration from many other games (for example, for me it's clear that this Level shown in 51:20 inspired the "kitchen level" in Streets of Rage 4, and like this with a thousand million more little details and inspirations or mutual influences one could list from different titles).
It is a shame that SEGA has been so stupid with many of its IPs and franchises [ 49:22 ], canceling projects with good prototypes, like the one started in Australia for Golden Axe, and so many others, and attacking the SoR-Remake Project instead of integrating it into the company (an arrogant decision that they should regret every day as a company).
Just a small correction: at [ 54:10 ] you say "be it as it may, it's literally the same game". This is incorrect. SoRR is a Game Development masterpiece that expanded and improved the original titles in each and every single aspect, including new characters, levels, remastered visuals and soundtracks, new VFX and SFX, etc. It resulted in one of the best fan-made games EVER made, if not the best one, given the perfectionism behind it.
It was also one of the primary sources of research and development consultation in the making of SoR4 actually, as Dotemu, LizardCube, and Guard Crush Games said in various interviews. To better understand the magnitude of that project, and the magnificence of the result, it would be good to consult this video too: ruclips.net/video/cgpJdNM_mFc/видео.html
I found out tonight that in SoR4, on the docks (I think) you can go into the arcade and fight Blanka..... sorry..... Zamza in the alien level from SoR2! You get an extra star and unlock the "Throwback" achievement for your troubles!
Loved the original complete history and I am so chuffed you managed to fit everything in this one! Thank you for taking the time to make such an entertaining documentary.
You are more than welcome, massive thanks mate
Unbelievable work mate, I really appreciate all the hard work you put into this one! I love your channel and your content, I have never missed a video!

@@EQOAnostalgia good suggestion! Damn thank you!
Beautiful video. Like you and many others I love this series. I already owned a Super Nintendo when I decided to rent a Genesis system along with a handful of games. One of those games was the first Streets of Rage. I had to have it. When I got a Genesis some time later it came with Sonic the Hedgehog AND Streets of Rage II. My brother and I played it over and over. We were huge beat em up fans to begin with. The Beats - the gameplay... I remember renting the third one and at the time I was not interested enough to buy it. I own all three via some compilations at this point and still play /dance to them. I bought 4 already but trying to beat the first three again before jumping in. Love both of your SOR videos. Keep it up. The fact SOR 4 folks watched your videos is amazing!
as a Brazilian, I couldn't help but be baffled and warm inside every time you put a Tec Toy image
Thank God they didnt get the level 5 boss they originally wanted...Cause the Twins were one of the best things about that game...And that game is loaded with "Best things".
First SOR is a Fn Masterpiece!
