Castlevania: The Complete History is a 2 part retro gaming documentary series discussing every single game based within the world of Akumajō Dracula
You probably already know of the 1986 action-platformer created by Konami for the Famicom Disk System (and eventually the Nintendo Entertainment System) But what you may not know is who made the original trilogy of NES games, what inspired them, why they made them, and what they are doing now!
In today's episode, I plan to answer all of these questions as well as cover every other game too including its follow-ups such as Simon's Revenge and Dracula's Curse on the same system. But also cover the strange Arcade ports such as Haunted Castle and the Playchoice 10 cabinet too.
We will cover its obscure releases on the original Game Boy such as The Adventure (plus it's Wii remake) & Belmont's Revenge, the even more bizarre Vampire Killer, and Akumajō Dracula on the sharp x68000
And of course, we will be giving special attention to the Mega Drive / Genesis release of Castlevania Bloodlines AKA the New generation before digging deep with the super Nintendo classic Super Castlevania IV before ending on probably the greatest Castlevania ever for the PC Engine AKA the Turbo Grfx16 game Rondo of Blood!
The less said about Castlevania Dracula X AKA Vampire Kiss... THE BETTER!

@@dadeleemurphy85 Damn, I thought people preferring "search action game" was a meme.
@@dadeleemurphy85 Why? In what way is it an inaccurate description of the genre that was pioneered and popularized by Metroid and Castlevania? And what would you replace the term with if "Metroid-vania" was abolished?
@@Dargonhuman Castleroid
@@Christian_Sandoval That sounds like a medical condition...
My favorite part is him casually opening up sealed copies of games to show what was included. Absolute mad man.
Was thinking the same 🤣🤣🤣
Surely somebody has to open them at some point. Otherwise you just own a brightly coloured piece of cardboard wrapped in cellophane. Then you sell it onto the next person who gets to admire the box for a while. Until you open the box, the cartridge both exists and doesn't exist.
It's all going to be dust one day. Why not enjoy it
Krang or whatever his name is tends to pick up sealed games so he can unbox them.
Nah bro leave it in the box. Sell that nonsense to someone who appreciates it and buy a loose cart.
I had forgotten how absolutely perfect the NES soundtrack was. Not only the melodies, but the chip sounds themselves really convey whats happening. That is the work of a master artist.
The fellow Silent Hill fans totally understand your pain, brotherly Castlevania fans...
The best thing we can both say at this point is, at least we're getting ports and collections...
I'm a fan of both. 😔
@@cubanref9670 same here, I've played the GBA and DS Castlevanias countless times! And I have the original 4 SH games on my pc too...
FU sSH ppl, the castlevania guy is still making games 😂😂😂😂
Having no new entries in a franchise is far better than getting Metal Gear Survive, imho.
Lets not forget that "Contra Rogue Corps" was a thing
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest was the first game I ever competed/beat. It's especially memorable for me as my mother helped me beat it by reading the map book and guiding me.
Your mom help you beat it? 😂😊
I have a lot of mixed feelings about this game. When I was a child my parents took me to one of those "trendy" churches. You know the kind, where the pastor tried to "connect" with youth, and "rap" with them.... Ugh it was so embarrassing by proxy. Well this was of course in the 1980s and Nintendo was in full-swing. He had a Nintendo in the basement of the church and used to sit with us while we played games during youth group.
Well, one day he picked up a copy of Castlevania, and of course we really liked it! David or "Davy" (the pastor) really ran with this. I guess he thought it fit in well with youth group as it was Christian oriented, and you were fighting evil on behalf of God. After a few weeks, he started coming to church dressed as Simon from the video game. Eventually he brought a whip, and started to try to whip stuff around the church. For instance, would try to whip "out" the candles etc. He was never really good.
One day he was dressed up at Simon and was giving the Sermon (this time in front of all the church, adults etc) and he was trying to make a point... pulled out his whip and tried to whip one of the lights... but on his backswing he caught a child in the eye. That child eventually lost her eye unfortunately. It was real sad, especially considering the insurance the church carried wouldn't cover this; it was considered an individual matter.
I don't know what happened to the pastor, but the little girl who lost her eye is doing okay now, and certainly cracks a small smile when she sees videos like this :)
That little girl is me.
Wow, that sure was quite the history piece. I'm not sure if my video bringing up this memory was a good thing on not... regardless, a huge thank you for your comment and support
Marry me.
If that pastor can officiate.
@@StripedAssedApe would you be okay with my eye?
Sorry about your eye. That place seemed like a trip.
@@angrytheclown801 one of the sermons (lol!) he had recorded about a 2.5 hour clip of him playing the game. He died a lot too, it wasn’t like a master walkthrough or anything. It was on videotape.
So many adult and old people were uncomfortable and bored. One of the elders tried to stop it and he got really mad and started to yell. Then he rewound the tape so we could all see “this one part” that we missed when the elder spoke up.
That Vampire Killer footage looked familiar...turns out my hunch was right. Nice to see my scrappy review footage helped with this documentary. Looking forward to part 2.
Hahaha thanks bud xxx
"WHAT IS A MAN , A MISERABLE LITTLE PILE OF SECRETS "
Shhh.... Wait till Part 2.
Love it, the cheesy lines was what made it, I really didn't like the "revised script and acting in the later rereleases.
@@fitnessabcvideo Yuri Lowenthal does Alucard justice, but even still, Robert Belgrade will always be my favorite to play him.
"What is a to be continued but a miserable little pile of waiting? But enough talk, let's go back to the beginning!"
I feel like this quote, and vampire killer are the only things people talk about from this game. Vampire killer is actually one of my LEAST favorite songs in the entire series. SO much better music that never gets any love.
Opening those sealed copies in front of me when I can't afford the used game only copies is torturous... Lol 😂😐😭
I threw up in my mouth a little bit, considering how much factory sealed games can go for. The only reason I could see for opening sealed copies ever is if you sealed them yourself, otherwise you're just setting fire to money to watch it burn and damaging a collectable.
@@philovermyer6166 🤣 right?!
Agree 😂😅 I was thinking “you really don’t have to do that”
I'm just gonna bare my soul here and make a confession to the interwebs. When he showed off that immaculate castlevania collection, something happened........
I got nintendo hard.
NINTENDOOOOO HARD
Bare your soup? I'm sure that's a typo, but it's an absolutely hilarious one.
@@Dargonhuman unfortunately it is a typo. I corrected the mistake. Got nintendo hard as a rock and grammatical mistakes were made.
@@sludgefactory241 Understandable. I still like the idea of someone baring their soup though.
This is criminally underviewed. It's so good I had to watch it again. Now on to part 2... again.
Its opened my eyes to make more like this... my latest script says resident evil at the top!
Don't you just hate it when people have a 2-part series but never include the "part 1" in the first part's video title, so you have no fucking idea that the 2nd part exists, lol.
I grew up on Castlevania Bloodlines, love that music.
How many people were screeching every time he cut into one of those sealed treasures?? Best Video Ever!
I bet there was a huge miscommunication and the owner did not actually want the sealed items to be opened.
@@jevansturner It's all good, I said he can open my collection, how else was he going to play and test them all.
@@jevansturner He got the games so he could get footage and show them off.

Simon's quest is super underrated in my opinion and one of my favorite Castlevania's of all time. Thank you for the great video and keep up the quality work!
Kinda like how Super Castlevania is super overrated....The game is another remake of the first game, whipping in 8 directions is just easy baby mode and isn't that great, the sound is terrible I always hated the SNES because of its weak, muffled music and sound effects. Hell the "rotating" level isn't that great either. Bloodlines was better than Super as were Rondo and Symphony
A new Complete History
And its on Castlevania
It's almost an hour long
And its only part 1.
Dang, Slope really be bringing us Christmas presents in January, huh?
My birthday is 2 days after this video went live, so it's like a birthday present for me lol. Considering my birthdays are historically terrible to the point that I've learned to hate them, this was a nice thing to look forward to this year.
@@Dargonhuman I'm sorry to hear your birthdays have been so rough, but I'm glad this one was at least a little better.

:)
I'm outraged by all the unsealing of retro treasures. They should have already been unsealed! Awesome work dude. Such a mammoth undertaking.
I like your attitude. Keeping things sealed just so they'll be worth money later is a bit antithetical to being a fan of something, innit? "I like Castlevania so much, look at all these games I've never played!"
@@OtakuUnitedStudio and @Mellow Gaming, people like you ruin humankind more than the Coronavirus.
@@paxhumana2015 Nah, hobbies are meant to be enjoyed now. If you're more worried about damaging the potential future value of your collection than enjoying it, then you're not a hobbyist, you're an investor and would be better off looking into trading stocks. Toys are meant to be played with and loved, not put on a shelf in their box to collect dust.
I've got a massive collection of old school Bionicle toys that's worth close to $4,000 in their "used" state - it could have been worth double or triple that but then I wouldn't have had countless hours of fun building them, playing with my nephews and making MOCs with the pieces.
Rondo could have single handedly changed the history of the Turbo Grafx in the states
It would have made such a difference for sure
Gonna play devil's advocate here and say it probably wouldn't have changed much. Honestly don't think it would've.
I hate the whip's perfection in Super Castlevania 4 never stayed as a permanent edition of the series
Yep.
@Super Mario nah, the whip needed to be limited. it's an intentional game design choice to incentivise sub-weapons!
The Whip in SC4 was simply too powerful, made the game too easy.
@@Ageleszly It's cheap without it. It's like releasing all the Resident Evil games without motion controls after RE4. It's laziness meant to prolong a game needlessly.
The game design on the OG Castlevania is so tight. It’s a joy to play.

Sacrilege would be not playing them.

Did you know that Simon Belmont was a character in the great "Captain N: The Game Master" Saturday morning cartoon?
He was the arrogant comic relief character who, if I remember right, had a chin that put Bananaman's to shame!

@retro game fan 1 , take out the Yakuza assholes that are running Konami now and you can have greatness back again.
first off thanks for the fb message! this was definitely worth the wait to watch... defintely been a longtime fan of the series as far back as the nes original! most of the original games i didn't even get around to finishing until that classic collection konami put out recently! definitely the best way to play those (since they include the vastly superior Japanese versions) also yeah shout-out to dracula x: rondo's god-tier soundtrack (and i had heard johnny 'turbo' brandstetter talk on twitter about trying to get rondo localized to no avail, heard he was really fighting for that one! shame it never arrived but at least konami wised up after the fact and re-released it at least three times after the fact.)
this was defintely the biggest and best complete history you've done and I can't wait for part 2!
I'm 1000% in the Bloodlines > Super IV group. That said, that rotating Mode 7 room is really cool.
For what it's worth, Dracula XX/Vampire's Kiss works incredibly well as a complementary experience to Rondo of Blood. If you play it right after mastering Rondo, it feels sort of like a challenge-based DLC or fan game/hack. Personally, I would love to see it remastered, with a playable Maria and maybe a couple more level branches.
It was fantastic to meet you today, Thanks for coming into our store :D
When your friend gets mentioned as lending part of his game collection to these guys haha.
Oh hai
Brilliant video mate, as expected! Given the dearth of Castlevania games coming out these days, it's bittersweet to remember how prolific the franchise was in the past. Looking forward to the next part!
The next one is seriously information overload lol
Don't forget that Rondo of Blood was also released on Wii Virtual Console a year after the PSP release. It was a day 1 purchase for me and immediately became my favorite Castlevania title. Still is today.
Just came across your channel, and I have to tell you, you’re awesome. Thank you for making these vids!
It's nice to see someone enjoying the retro games instead of driving up prices (and I'm not mentioning MetalJesusRocks there, did you see? I didn't mention him AT ALL)
I know I joke around a bit but this video must have taken a lot of effort and it's appreciated.
Agreed. Games are meant to be played.
Why did they BREAK THE BLOODY PLASTICS!! I cried every time in my soul when I saw them taking off the sealed plastic...
Games are meant to be fucking played.
Because I told him to, it's my collection and I told him to open the games.
@@Asobitech I was really hoping he had your permission to do that, and didn't just go for it to make the video more interesting... that would have been a terrible thing.
Excellent video my first title was Simons Quest, which I played at a friend's house. My favorite is Super Castlevania 4, part of the the fun is how OP Simon is in that game. That multi direction whip makes the game easy but a blast to play. SOTN, ROB, and Bloodlines follow closely behind.

So many sad kids at home, because their parents didn't get them a GameBoy, but just a Tiger LCD game.
You have done it again! Absolutely stunning and so detailed. I enjoyed every moment thank you. I loved the bit where you LCD yourself!
Best wishes.
Hahahaha I was well chuffd when I worked out that bit
Yeah that effect looked top notch!
Sounds like "the complete history of" has just entered it's Konami arc
Castlevania symphony of the night is one of the best games ever period the music in that game alone. Shame the PS4 edition is the psp version and it's been redone for talking but least the music is still the same
Xbone has the Xbox 360 downloadable version, which is exactly like the ps1 version. Even the sword brothers librarian glitch works.
Just wanted to say this is a new high point for the channel, this video was fantastic and cant wait for more content. Well done.
Really excellent video Dj Slope. Great work.
50:09 Me, I'm one of those people. It's my personal favorite classic style Castlevania and I consider it a must play not only for action game and Castlevania fans but anyone who owns a Megadrive/Genesis; it's just that good.

Never knew why they dont always stick with the R button(or just a separate button) for the item usage instead of up+whip.
I've been waiting my entire life for this moment.
No need for headphones, I have the music committed to memory :)
Yes! I can hum the entire OSTs for the first three games in whole from listening to them on my mp3 player so often, and I converted the mp3s myself from the ripped NSF file using the highest quality settings, so they're as close to the original chiptunes from the carts as possible for mp3 compression.
@@Dargonhuman I used to have a music player that would rip the .nsf files from the roms and play them directly. I wish I remembered what it was called so I could get it again...
@@Darkdaej The one I used was Winamp modified with special plugins that allowed it to play NSF and other chiptune formats. That's actually how I converted them into mp3 format back in the day.

I don't think either Vampire Killer or Castlevania 1 is a sequel. That's like asking if Dracula X or Rondo of Blood is a sequel, when they're two different adaptations of the same concept. They don't play the same way, sure, but they've both got roughly the same story - Vampire Killer and Castlevania 1 are about Simon Belmont hunting down and killing Dracula, Dracula X and Rondo are both about Richter Belmont fighting Dracula. That's how the official timeline treats them.
Dude. This is such a great video.
Quality work!
I still have my Tiger Electronics Simon's Quest handheld lol good times
Hahaha I'm sure it was good for back in the day
@@slopesgameroom As a former and current owner of Tiger Electronics games... not really, lol. They were and are good for a lark or if you've got few other options, but even back then I'd rather play just about anything else. 👏👏👏👏👏👏 Congrats Dan. This is one hell (no pun intended) of a part one! Great work..
What a well-timed video for me! I'm currently going through all Castlevania titles, just finished Dracula X (after playing Rondo, loved both) and playing Adventure Rebirth right now on my Wii, loving it as well, it looks and sounds beautiful. Thank you for this. Been looking forward to watching this vid for so long now!
God damn you! I shall watch and like. I'm already subscribed, so you get 2 out of 3.
Castlevania 3 was one of the first games I got bundled with my NES. I watched my grandfather get to the final boss. He never could beat it

The production is absolutely incredible. If I could subscribe again I would.
I hope RUclips gives this the exposure it deserves.

Of all the games and all the consoles my brother and I have had, Super Castlevania is still my favorite. I'm 44 years old now and I can still remember playing that game on cold autumn or winter days and really just getting pulled into the musical score and gothic game design. Absolutely terrific soundtrack! Still waiting for a proper successor and I hear tell that Sony wants to lease or buy Konami's biggest properties? If so, I think that could be a winner.
Nuttin like gearing up for Halloween with some classic Castlevania..
Thank you for sharing the beat I made on your video ! Much appreciated 🙏 38:33
more than welcome great work
The first thing you highlighted about Castlevania is the music!
Undeniably one of the best things about Castlevania are it’s incredible soundtracks!
No one can attest to this better than the Smash Bros. Ultimate sound team saying how much fun they had remixing Castlevania music.
You can tell on what they did with it they had such passion for thr soundtracks as do I!
This has got to be one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. I also liked actually seeing you ... not just the Avatar.... Hello You!
Castlevania’s music has always been such a huge factor on where I rank the games. I always knock a game down a few pegs if the OST doesn’t meet the series’ high standards. Looking at you, Harmony of Dissonance.
I feel attacked when he said the help me cheat on C3 was necessary. I did all endings without it. lol
Konami's Genesis/MD offerings were more times than not absolute gold and, yes, I do like Bloodlines a lot more than Super Castlevania IV. The option of Eric Lecarde's different gameplay style and the early-20th century locations around Europe were far more interesting to me than another redux of the original game. I still have my copy complete in box from back then, the clamshell release even.
Ah, my all time favorite game series! While I already pretty much know just about everything about the series, I did not know about some of those obscure Amiga and DOS versions of the original Castlevania. I definitely want to look into those now even if they aren't good. Also, that collection of Castlevania games is so beautiful and makes me jealous lol. Looking forward to part 2, great job on part 1!
Hope you enjoyed it... part 2 is very much information overload with all the games I talk about :D
Bloody brilliant!
A Castlevania documentary on RUclips? I guess I'm interested in this.
"In the eyes of Japan us westerners like 2 types of games - shooters and RPGs."
Boy were they wrong. Those were some of the least popular genres at the time here in the United States. Rondo of Blood would have been a BIG hit over here - can't believe they made such a bad call.
A terrible call for sure
Epic video! Random add-on: the name of the character 'Alucard' is Dracula backwards
Super Castlevania 4 was golden for its time. Great vid.
It is a fantastic game no doubt. But I kinda don't consider it a classic Castlevania game. Not a metroidvania either obviously. But it just plays so so differently to all the other classic CV games. It's a bit like the Mega Man X of the franchise, with the other classic CV games being the classic Mega Man. Similar, but with a lot of major gameplay differences
I'm one of those weird people that like Bloodlines more than Super Castlevaina IV.
Its still a fantastic game tbf
Maybe someone can help me as I’ve been staring at it for however long this video is; What is on his/your shirt and why does it look so familiar?
I wanna know too!
Only got around to the Castlevania series for the first time a couple years ago in my thirties, after ten years of watching RUclips videos about them. And . . . yeah they're great. My favorites probably were Bloodlines or Rondo of Blood. After Symphony of the Night of course
I watched this while under the influence, worth it.
The music on this is fantastic
My favorite is simons quest. Love the gameplay and music.
As if you stopped there. Right before symphony. Actually shouted " NO" lol. Perfect cliffhanger . Awesome vid. I'd sub again if i could.
roll on part 2, hell I may even do the patreon thing and get it early.
@@Asobitech was thinking the same thing lol
You, Sir, are a king of content! Love your videos.
Thanks mate :D
It's been a longtime.
Rondo Of Blood is the hardest out of all the games in my opinion.
Where was I when this video dropped?! I am a subscriber and have been for years. This is perhaps your greatest video to date. Thank you for making this episode. Have you downloaded (I'm pissed I can't get it physical) the Castlevania Advance Collection yet? These are some of the very few Castlevania games I missed as I'm a console guy. At any rate, I love it so much I purchased it for my Series X and Switch. That way I can play at home in native 4K where the colors pop like fireworks and while I'm on the go like at work. I get at least an hour and a half paid downtime where I'm not only allowed to game it's encouraged with pay! ;)
Welcome back :D you will see I actually got asked by Konami to look at the new collection.
Just finished, circle of the moon. Great collection of games
