Surprised there wasn't a mention of the 'easy' ending. Where the game basically said 'git good' and ended at Stage 5 period. - Being a little kid and finally reaching that stage...I was crushed. 😭 I was also paranoid of a similar fate in every other game I played back then and never did anything less than 'normal' difficulty.

What consumers prefer the music from SoR2? I prefer the idea of creating a slightly different ambience between SoR2 and 3. And now with the Megadrive Collection we can even choose the region of the game so that we can enjoy the original difficulty of Bare Knuckles III. The story can be looked up online while enjoying the game the way it was meant to be without the "American Nonsensical Difficulty".

In Streets of rage 3 you just go through the stage fighting people coming off of boats, the end next stage. In bare-knuckle 3 you actually fight him at the end of that stage. If only that had been the only thing removed/changed from the game. Sadly, not even close.

One of the biggest problems games face nowadays, is in attempts to "make the next game better" they throw away what was innovative, fun, and worked perfectly about the previous game. Often causing more problems than solutions. "Patches" in MMORPGs are the same way. Once something actually works and is near balanced to a solid extent.. a "patch" comes out where they feel the need to mess with classes that didn't need to be messed with, and screw up the play of the game all over again.
Streets of Rage.. didn't have this problem. They actually added good things each game, improved what needed to be improved and didn't mess with what was already perfect. Rather than "overhauling" the whole game, they just added to it and DIDN'T change what worked perfectly already.
When people's biggest complaint is "the gameplay is too similar to the last game(which had perfect gameplay)" it;s a nitpick.
I'd much rather if the gameplay was already perfect it NOT be messed with, you can add things to it, but don't change the core of it. SEGA understood this with Streets of Rage, and so many game companies still struggle with this concept today.

Its stated in-game, that Roo's ringleader was very abusive towards him, as shown by how often he whips him. So, In a way, by not defeating Roo, you're doing the right thing, because he gets the justice that he's been yearning for ages. Plus, who wouldn't want to beat up thugs with a Kangaroo?

Yeah, the most fundamental thing in a beat em up is that it's satisfying hitting people. The sound effects are a huge part of that. That wasn't addressed in this video at all. A secondary factor is that attacks took way less damage, making you think your character is weak.

Whoa, the graphics of the game were actually heavily improved upon. The sprites were much larger and more detailed. No laziness at all considering how old the Sega Genesis system was when this came out. I think the biggest reason this bombed was because by 1994, other, more better games were released. Final Fantasy VI with a much better plot but not as much beat-em-up, Mortal Kombat II with much more beat-em-up but less plot lol. Then think of games like Super Metroid or Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Cool music and throwing people off elevators just wasn't cool 3 times in a row in that year.

I was 14 with this game was released, and I remember the gaming magazines- Mean Machines, etc- liking the game a lot, but at the same time were a tad underwhelmed. I was very surprised by this and got to then play it meself not too long after. I remember loving the game as I had the others, - and at the time, I dont believe I had any awareness of the tweaks and alterations made to the version we'd gotten in Europe- the Ash factor, and tings like that. I love the disco room level- the strobe lightning is still so cool to look at. The added depth and repeated plays garnered from the multi story arcs and alternate endings was very cool at the time for a game like this. Rather than just button bash yer way to an inevitable happy ending, the more uncompromising factors in the game absolutely gave it the vibe of a "heavier", "rougher" sequel that made you work harder for its approval and completion. Same then, applies to the soundtrack, employing a far more abrasive, harsh, heavy metaled techno attack, ramming into more experimental loops and sound effects.
Some of it works brilliantly- I love the Kill em All menace of the first level, and tracks like "The Poets", and the huge high sounds of the night club sound great. So too do the dirty, greasy grooves of the first act of Level 2, when they are back on familiar grounds of both previous games opening stages. But yeah, the euphoric early 90s house music choons of the second game were missed aswell.
As ya said, the bar raised by the second game was so high and mighty at the time that anyting Streets of Rage 3 did would ultimately loose out, regardless of its own new merits. But to me anyway, this one sent off the trilogy in awesome style. Brilliant retrospective you did on this one, mate. Great to watch

SOR3 had so many changes from SOR2. The fighting got better, with running, rolling, new specials, team moves.
The bigger sprites look good, but the change to the color palette was a mistake. The change in sound effects alienated the game.
Adding a new character was a good idea, removing another character not so much.
The whole techno-enemy setting and shooting enemies didn't work out.
Many things are worse because of a change in direction, other this simply came short because of the limitations of the catridges.
The bigger sprites needed more space as well as computing power.

I really hate the fact a lot of people bash the music in Streets of Rage 3. It may not be like the other 2 games, but the music here works for it's own storyline. I've made a video discussing why the music in Streets of Rage 3 wasn't so bad. ruclips.net/video/ubyhiO85l4M/видео.html

I've only recently gotten into this saga. I'd say sor3's biggest flaw is the sound department, which pales in comparison to the first two games, and maybe boss mechanics which feel more like a step back to the first game and feel cheap and arcaic.Otherwise is a fine game.

Bare Knuckle 3 is my favorite streets of rage game where as Streets of Rage 3 is my least favorite. The changes in gameplay are fantastic, the level interaction is very cool, but they had to mess with the difficulty sadly and I've never once been able to get past the bad ending. So there's an entire other half of the game that I never experienced as a kid.

When adapting BK3 into SoR3, they tampered with the difficulty, the story and the aesthetic of the characters.
Also the music sucked in both versions compared to BK2 / SoR2.
Had SoR3 been more like BK3, and with a better sound track, it would have been better received by the fans, as it does have a lot to offer in terms of new fighting mechanics.

I guess I have a similar response here to when I said something similar on the BomberGames Forum.
I have no idea why SoR fans can be so uptight.
If you enjoy the harder difficulty or the new direction for the music, that's fine. Last time I checked, BK3 has a Hard setting.
And yes, BK3 does have a few bugs which were fixed for SoR3, but they're not exactly game breaking.

I'm going to have to agree about the Composer's high opinion of his own work for Streets of Rage 3. The BGM was one of the high points of the game.
    OTHER HIGH POINTS:
    Beautiful Graphics, especially level backgrounds.
The sharp "YAAAAGH!" of the Syndicate goons after defeat (Clear upgrade from the "Uuugh!" from SoR 2. Much edgier)
LOW POINTS (Basically why I feel Streets of Rage 2 was the better game)
The Classic Final Fight-ish Beat 'Em Up experience took a back seat to the more experimental side of the game (A high-tier boss like Shiva as the 1st Boss felt frustrating, Mona and Lisa were a little tough for just Stage 2, Stage 3 was a non-stop obstacle course, then comes what stunk about Splatterhouse 3 with the good/bad ending divide and Mr.X)
The Palette changes for the American Release were not an improvement, and a might random
While the overall Sprite Character art is superior to SoR 2, some characters simply look less appealing than their counterparts from the previous game (Blaze, Shiva, Axel)
Having to split the role of filing the gap from lacking an obvious 'Strong-but-Slow' Mike Hagger-type character (like Max) between Axel and Zan was as awkward as the way I wrote this sentence
While the cutscenes and presence of a story was a good idea in general, the cliche-fest we got (Mr. X's whole plot, Blaze thinking she's June Cleaver and that Skate's the Beaver, Skate coming off like a hokey 'angry black guy' bit) was a disappointment
What they Replaced Skate's Corkscrew Kick with......I preferred using Axel or Blaze, but it got to me none the less. Ugh.

My disappointment in sor3 is far and beyond
    In my personal opinion
They tried to hard to make it better
    And that was the mistake
    If its not broken
    Of which sor2 wasn't
you know the rest of the saying
And i really hate to be the debbie downer but sor4 looks

what does she shout cowabunga and rad dude
If they wanted to do the franchise some glory and fan service bring back skate as adult
Oh and wait till you see axel
Im not even gonna ruin it for you
Just go and have a look
    And the art style (sor4)
    Why cartoon ?

Bare Knuckle 3 is an underrated and underappreciated classic. There's a few factors why:
Late release in Megadrive life - fewer played.
It followed SOR2 and SOR3 got butchered from its Japanese counterpart - storyline, ridiculously high difficulty, change of character clothes - those that did play it didnt enjoy it!
The music always gets used as a scapegoat but it never got a chance to be great because of the other factors above, gamers time was never invested into it like SO2. SOR3 music is just as brilliant and revolutionary - they did it again. Geniuses.
I encourage everyone to go and play Bare Knuckle 3, its fantastic.

In the second game many bosses/enemies can be killed off screen using Max's dash attack in the far edge before the boss has a chance to get back into action. Takes some of the fun out of it. The only two things I can say 2 did better was the music (with a few exceptions) and that Max isn't in it (despite the aforementioned cheese).

The combat in streets of rage 3 is much improved over 2. The extra movement options mean you can actually evade a large group of enemies unlike in 2 where sometimes you just have no option but to eat a few punches.
The music is fantastic but certainly takes some getting used to. It's much more complex than the previous games and it takes a while for your brain to work it out.
I think the thing that mainly makes 2 stand out from 3 is the graphical style. They gave 3 a more muted colour palette which makes it look a lot harsher and realistic. 2 has got much brighter and more memorable graphics.
3 wasn't really made for mass market appeal, but rather for people who spent a lot of time with it, even if the developers probably didn't intend it.

I always played as Axel. When I played 4 and double tapping move didn't run I was confused...
Maybe in my OG universe you could run as everyone in 2.

You can run with some characters in 4. I believe with cherry hunter and another one

I love Streets of Rage 3 but I’ll only play the Japanese version of SoR 3 (which is an amazing game)

I never played 1 or 2 so I wouldn't know what to be "outraged" about. I started at 3 and I enjoyed the game and still play it to this day.

I don’t see how people became outraged over Streets of Rage 3. You got to unlock and play as a kangaroo wearing Everlast trunks and boxing gloves! 🤷‍♂️

I think youtubers exaggerate things. They read some opinions about it on gamefaqs or something and then assume everybody back then openly verbally hated it. Back then if people didnt like a game, they just didnt play it again.

Was great game in my opinion. It had it own style and music. It was a much darker game and tone. I loved the music.

SoR3 was actually the best and most mature version of the game. Loved everything about it. Especially the music.

I'm largely the same, but I'd say that 3 has the unfortunate distinction of having the only songs in the series that I genuinely don't like(TUNNELWAY, for starters.)

As someone who's only played the games pretty recently (played 2 back in 2011 on PS3 and have been playing the series again recently on a few collections. I still absolutely love 2.) My main problem with Streets of Rage 3 is that the basic attacks don't feel quite right. They come out quickly in a way that feels a bit buggy. Maybe I just need to get used to it but that's the main reason why it doesn't do much for me compared to 2. Also, the new playable character designs aren't the most appealing so I think that plays into it a little.

The same, I don't feel anything from the attacks. This is why I didn't liked it. Also the level art seems kinds of small and run of the millish compared to the 2nd. And also now I know why in America it had that incomplete feel. We didn't received the game as it should be t.t

The soundtrack was awful for 3 to me. For me, the soundtrack turned me off the most. 2 was just such a hard act to follow.

It's actually the sound effects that are the biggest issue, the bone crunching sounds are gone from SOR2 in favor of weird sack slapping sounds. It's even worse that randomly the soundfx don't even play at all for 5-10 seconds at a time sometimes and you're just hitting enemies with only the music playing.

A friend of mine suggested your video, great work. :) SOR3 doesn't get enough love. I personally enjoy it, though tend to play Bare Knuckle III. SOR3 on Normal is very tough, and I've made it to the final boss for the good ending before. I'm also working on an alternative soundtrack, and your vid's inspired a good mood to return to my tracks, so thanks!
