Mother falsely accused of human trafficking

- Mary MacCarthy said back on October 22, a Southwest Airlines manager and two police officers flagged her down at Denver International Airport after flying from San Jose. She was accused of human trafficking, which she wasn't. And she said the stop was racist because she is white and her daughter is Black.

The woman is spot on. She let it go but then when the Denver police called her 10 days later, it reignited the situation. If this is how they go about preventing child trafficking?... by using a flight attendant's judgement? Pffft .And it was a big fat fail. They screwed with an innocent person twice. Meanwhile the real traffickers are doing business as usual. Bravo!
what real traffickers are those, hmmm? trafficking in any human beings is very difficult in a modern industrial society, and doubly so if the commodity is children. if you really want to end human trafficking, let alone child trafficking, stop demonising trans and gay kids, maybe stop abusing and bullying them at home and at school. who knows, maybe they won't run away straight into the waiting arms of even worse predators than just the local pastor, the stepdad, the uncle, the bible belting mother, or the gym coach, yeah?
Did Denver PD seriously call this woman back and ask about human trafficking? Jesus

Her daughter looks just like her. She has every right to sue them.
They don't check ID's when people get on planes anymore, the airline and the police could have easily found out who this woman was and made a rational determination about what was going on.
Exactly
They do check IDs. I traveled to NY last September and they did to everyone
They do, and soon they will not let you fly without a RealID.
What ID does the child fly with?
They check MULTIPLE times
I had a similar experience coming in from Mexico with my child, only I’m white and she’s white but her dad is Italian, so she has his olive skin. I nearly had to go get her birth certificate to prove she was my daughter. While I understand the angst, it would be worse if she actually was being trafficked, and no one did a thing.
sad that people can't get the child trafficking part.
Yeah I have mixed feelings about this. Even biological parents traffic their children so a birth certificate doesn’t mean it can’t happen. I think what is important here is to find out if the flight attendant lied as to the reason she felt the child might be in danger.
Coming from a parent perspective I understand how upset this mom was, we always want to protect our children. I understand this was very traumatic for her daughter especially just coming from a funeral. I understand the first instinct is anger and feeling injustice.
Yet I feel like the trauma of the situation could be mitigated by having a discussion on why it is so important adults do look for children who are vulnerable.
Instead we are pushing back at reporting suspicions for fear of being wrong. Which ultimately will hurt the chances of a child being rescued.
Now if the only reason the flight attendant chose to report was because of racial profiling that is wrong. So I hope an investigation is done. I have a friend who married a Korean man and her children are half white and half Korean. Her daughter has dark skin, dark hair and her son has a lighter olive skin with blond hair. When they were young the amount of people who randomly stopped her and asked her about her adoption was astounding. Perfect strangers assuming her child was adopted just because her skin was dark. People don’t understand genetics very well and let’s face it some people still don’t like seeing mixed races.
I think it's the way they handled it. Also, lots of people have mixed race children or children who don't have the same ethnic look as they do. The child's behavior seemed to be that of a child with a parent, not a stranger.
No because basing something like if someone is being trafficked based on their have different complexions is asinine how much potential human trafficking could they have missed because they were the same race oh your both the same colour that all checks out don’t you think that if someone were trying to smuggle people they would make sure their appearance ethnicity race whatever were as close as possible to avoid suspicion
everytime i see this i am amazed. in my country the information of a minor child is recorded in their parents passport. Doesnt the US have this? This way if the information of the minor child in the parents passport matches the information on the childs passport, all doubt should be taken away.
Imagine how we feel getting stopped saying we got a description lol

This was my thought exactly, but I can understand the shock of the little girl and the mom but sadly people do traffic children and you never know who is being trafficked.
@@BiancaZombie No. Unless you are a racist who has lives in a homogenous neighborhood and has never left it.
They did what they had to do, it's better to be cautious. The airline was right to question the woman.
Nah be honest nothing would have been brought up if they were the same race. This is just a case of racial profiling, nothing more.
Y'all never hear of interracial children? It almost sounds like racial profiling
Sheesh
Should we start carrying group pictures now?
Actually you should carry some ID, and a letter from the other parent allowing the travel.
So the airline employee were looking out for traffickers. Is that a bad thing? Of course they look different.
The same thing happened to me when I traveled to Central America, I was returning with my fifteen year old son. I am white, and my son is half hispanic. They sent me to some special customs officer to get checked out. I was laughing hysterically at the customs officer - I thought - check all you want. I thought it was funny because my 15 year old son was 6'2" 200 lbs, bigger than me, and the idea that I might be forcing him to do something against his will seemed ridiculous. I think my hysterical laughing confused her.
I think this mother needs to get over her snit about profiling and be grateful that people are trying to stop trafickers. I am sure if she explained things to them she would have been ok. After all, that's what people who are looking for trafficked children do: they profile. The look for the circumstances that are more likely to trafficked children.

I've seen a few videos like this over the past few years, I wonder why. I asked my mother about it, she said she never had anything like this happened to her. This was absolute profiling! What sort of signs could this flight attendant have seen? Mother wants to sit with daughter. The daughter shows no signs of distress so where's the red flag?
Training has to be reviewed and improved
Unfortunately, this is not as uncommon as people might think. I read a story about a white grandmother who the police thought was being kidnapped by a young black man and did not realize that the young black kid was her grandson. The cop unfortunately racially profiled them.
Dang that's harsh even for someone who give false information.
How the hell do you get accused of trafficking a minor just because you told daughter not to talk to strangers
I suggest the mother daughter showed genuine signs of family stuff during the flight, but the attendant had a fixation about trafficking and were looking for different cues. Shame.
Even if they were suspicious of human trafficking, many people adopt kids of many different backgrounds.
What the heck is wrong with these ppl at the airline. They need to be sued for this. The flight attendant nerds to be fired.
I know several families who’ve adopted children of different races. Black husband and wife with white and mixed children; white husband and wife with Black and white children…. Like c’mon people. Families are mixed with all different races and colors. Let people be happy and love their families.

Don't you have to show I.D. to fly. Disgusting!
That little girl is adorable.. I understand both sides of this . But ya they should had made a public apology. God bless you two . 🙏
What kills me is they need an “internal investigation” before they can apologize. The airline suits are planning damage control. Any apology written by a lawyer is no apology at all. It’s a cover your ass document.
I had a similar incident as a truck driver at a truck stop. My girlfriend at the time who was a woman of color and me a white male. They called the cops on us and accused me off kidnapping her despite the fact she did look in her 30. I caught on real quick to what was going on and asked the cops for the name of who did this so I could file racial discrimination charges against the person. As soon as they said no it confirmed my suspicion. I come from a multi racial family myself so I understand how this family feels.
Reminds me once while sitting in Golden Corral restaurant with my 3 month old daughter. Another guest accused me of stealing a baby. My wife is Asian born in Asia I am black and American. At the time I was sitting with the baby while my wife was getting her food. Luckily other than the obvious color difference the baby looks more like me than the wife. Another guest in the restaurant chastised the accuser saying I look like my daughter. My wife missed the whole thing.
And yet, if it had been an actual case of human trafficking, and the airline did not question it because "they didn't want to offend anyone or be accused of racism," they would have been damned for not "doing their jobs."
Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
But it wasn’t was it
@@justinmathis7707 No. But if it was, and it was ignored because "we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings or be called racists," well, read my comment above.
So, how would the mother feel if her child was in danger and everyone assumed it was mother and daughter, so no one questioned them?
How about when suspicions are ignored for fear of being sued?
I agree that they should have found a way to ask these questions that were less stressful for the child.
Omg that's horrible!!!
I hope they file a HUGE lawsuit!
I am so very sorry this mother and daughter had to experience this. I am so happy people are so proactive in combating human trafficking.
Telling your kid not to talk to strangers is suspicious behavior?
Exactly!
Authorities are damned if they do, damned if they don't.
Ive given up flying. The airlines are out of wack. Cant trust them anymore.
This is horrible. A child cannot be with her biological mother because the child's skin shade.
"Thought" they were "acting suspicious". Simple question would have fixed all of that. Attendants engage in conversation with people on the flights all the time. Just look at their eyebrows
Around this time a close friend of mine worked for them as a flight attendant, she left a year later because they wanted them to look for things that they never trained her to do. I volunteer at a summer event that happens at my church, they fully train us on different things to notice. Never have I once did something like this and I'm sure you know why, because once again I'm trained
I'm sorry I see no family resemblance other than the bags under their eyes which I find kind of odd for a child and if the mother carries the daughter's birth certificate every time they travel she knows this may be a problem. Is it right that she has to do this no it isn't.
Should have simply requested for clarification respectfully and the whole drama would have been avoided.
i would be thankful someone was looking out for my kid. i rather go through that with my kid then have my kid taken without a look

I get both sides while profiling is a serious matter we can't discount that human trafficking is a real thing. If we punish the airlines and employees we are training them to ignore suspicious behavior that might be actual human trafficking or other serious crimes. A child held against their will maybe right under nose of an attendant and they will do nothing because they don't want to be wrong and be crucified for it.
Well, as the lawyer in the video said. It comes down to better training instead of coming across as assuming.
It's funny how the excuses made by Southwest make the airline look worse. I would think that most moms would want or demand to sit with their children, especially when they're actually children. There are many children that are traficked like this all the time. Many times you just have to go on your intutition. This will have a cooling effect, next time even if a flight attendant has suspicions she will just keep it to herself, why bother if you are wrong you could lose everything.
Human smuggling business is bigger than drugs or guns smuggling. People should be happy that someone wanted to verify the child was hers. If I was a mother, I'd be grateful. Instead, they turn this into racism. Unbelievable. However, I'm willing to bet that if the child was traveling with a "white" kidnapper, the mother would be outraged that no one stopped to question the relationship between a white person and a black child.
Or maybe next time she’ll just go up and be friendly….. and the conversation will tell you a lot
@@educationalramblings6826 The conversation will tell you a lot exactly how, the child will say she is being traficked, or you will question tge child and if she does not talk then what? Wait? Southwest Airlines is asked to identify human traffickers to ease the job of, Federal Air Marshal Service 🤓
No. They airlines teach their employees to be alert and on the lookout for possible human trafficking, which appropriate and noble. A year or so ago a flight attendant recognized what she believed to be suspect behavior and thwarted a child trafficking situation. If the woman was acting strange, in addition to instructing her child not to speak to the fight attendants during service etc, then it will raise suspicion.
