I just love how late you can brake in the 86. You and a car with much more horsepower can go into a turn at the same speed and angle but the magic of the 86's NA engine will allow you to feather the brake and slow down much later than the 350-400 HP beasts that are commonly associated with touge racing. Such an amazing little machine.
Holy hell, the exterior camera shot at 9:09... It's straight out of the manga/anime! I didn't think anyone could actually make that happen, that's amazing!
Its nice to see Michael shedmacher doing well, keep it up jimmy we love you!

the dude in the black r34 was absolute class. Massive respect for him.
I firmly believe that Takumi's 86 in first stage wasn't stock.
We all been told that Bunta has fiddled with it over the years.
I believe the chassis & suspension was tuned for stability.
I believe it had not more than 180hp, but may have had a short ratio gearbox.
But most importantly, I believe that car has been put through a lot of subtly concealed weight shedding to keep with up with powerful cars uptil 3rd gear.
I'm theorizing this bcz Bunta knows that the car should complement the driver's talent.
First stage is confirmed 150 hp and stage 4 is 250 hp
it wasnt confirmed to be 150. ryosuke thought that would be the maximum amount of horsepower based on how it launches. the transmission had short gears so it was good in tight turns and keeping up with competitors off the line
@@dustcollector4096 it was literally confirmed by the creator
180hp would be a full on racing engine. it still was a daily drivable car for the shop
Car in first stage was def tuned on suspension. As you said it was mentioned few times. About gearbox ratio im to completly sure as I was watching it with local subtittles and it was mentioned something as rally style short gearbox but in that translation it can mean both shorter ratio or just shorter gear travels for faster shifting.

Hey I drove up and down this course in real life last week, in an FD RX-7 with my mates in an R34 and an S15!
Going around those hairpins I almost couldnt believe how fast people were actually street racing through them.
I'm jealous.
hey how do you play multiplayer witz mods?
@@xate6746 you have to find sever with mods on it, these togue servers usually have well known and good mods you can download for free. Or just buy your own server for 5 usd, thats what me and my friends did and now can play whatever car and track we want.
I wish they would make a game just about this, with you having to maintain your car, upgrade it, change tyres, fix things and race to earn money. A bit like the old Street Rod games for DOS. That would be so much fun!
I'm guessing you haven't heard about tokyo xtreme racer series?
beamng in time probably, when the career mode releases
@@flippy9133 Oh yeah that would be a great game for something like that!
There's a few racers like that, many of them quite old now. NFS: Porsche Unleashed (PC version, NOT the PS1 version) was pretty much like that, only it started you off in the 1950's. You bought a 356, raced them on road courses, you had to fix whatever damage you incurred during the race, and it was advised to buy and install upgrades to make it faster. You could even buy beat up used cars and flip them for profit.
It's a bit outdated these days, but still a compelling game. The TXR series had a bit of that going on, only no damage to repair. Unfortunately, awful physics made those games tough to get into. Ripping around the Tokyo highway system looking for cars to race was definitely a bit of a vibe, though.
@@mbgmadbull1141 there hasn't been a new one of those in 17 years
It is so true what you were saying about not needing 1000bhp to have fun. Since we started going out on track we've had several occasions in our Mini Cooper and Cooper S where we are faster round a lap than some fire breathing monster that does 4745mph on the straights but is completely useless when the track changes direction. It is 100% more fun being able to go flat out over a whole lap rather than full throttle for 8 seconds then waiting for the next straight to do it again.
Low HP and low weight is always better with driver skill!!!
The mini was so fun in DR 2
Mini S's are just insane little rippers
I literally never comment on RUclips videos but I have to say I couldn't agree more (although I'm definitely biased being an R56 Cooper S owner).
I've thought about selling it multiple times over the years but everytime I asked myself, "What else can I buy for the same amount of money, that is the same amount of fun?" and the answer is always the same, I can't think of anything else that provides the same amount of "Smiles per Gallon" as a Cooper S, great little go-karts!

It's a very specific itch that Togue Union and SRP scratch of the urge to push 80's and 90's JDM icons to their limit, like our own episodes of Best Motoring.
If you'd have told me growing up not only could I play with the cars I loved on Gran Turismo on proper country roads, and have the ability to do that with people around the world, I wouldn't have ever thought it possible.
The most fun I've had playing racing games is racing random people through traffic in SRP
Sometimes when technology and passions combine you get something like this..
Now imagine this in real life, a road like this closed off permanently for track use.
Yay, More Touge content! I hope I get lucky and catch you on a Togue life server soon! Cheers
I spent an unhealthy amount of time trying to match that 5:22. Managed at 5:30 so far so I'll take my achievement lol. I've got alot of time to make up on the hairpins getting it turned in but I'm coming for you Jimmer!

I'm gonna see how fact I can get in that 86.
I've spent thousands of hours doing exactly this. I'd just turn on some music, put on the VR headset, and keep replaying the track all day long.
Awesome edits, such a cool scene to see the view from a gran turismo cinematic shot for passes and taps.
If anyone wants to drive on "Akina" in a video game and not a mod, its actual real life name is Haruna, and this mountain road appears in Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift series. It's also obviously in the Initial D games too.
My favorite low HP combo in asseto is a stock Suzuki cappuccino at laguna seca. You can do the ENTIRE course in 3rd gear. A shift to 2nd in the final corner can gain you a tenth but other than that it really lets you focus on your lines and carrying speed
Editor did a good job with this one, love the external shots
Shitboxes are the best! I'm on my 3rd mx5 and there is nothing more rewarding than trouncing real cars in the twisties.
This was a really fun and educational video Jimmer.
I can relate 100%...my favourite car in Dirt Rally is the Alpina 110.
The sound, the skill needed to drive it fast is just awesome! (in VR I should add)
You can also get a cars rear end to slip by shifting down without hitting any other pedals besides the clutch. I only do this after I heel toe in for the entrance and then I shift down while holding the clutch in to step the cars rear end out. This has allowed me to slide the car through the corner at high speeds. The AE86 is definitely the perfect car for learning your own technique which is what I did.
What jimmer said about gt3 sim racing is so true. I one hundred percent agree that you learn more about car control with a 130bhp japanese box in 30 minutes than u do with a gt3 at spa in a lot longer. Gotta love the good ol boxy boys

JIMMER TOUGE IS ALWAYS FUN TO WATCH
Glad you enjoy touge racing! This EXACTLY is the reason why I bought my sim rig. To fulfill my childhood weeb initial D dream 😂
In the real world I started my car handling journey with an AE86 Corolla GT Coupe. Taught me everything I needed about car control, and respecting limits. So playful, do much fun. Today's cars don't allow people to learn about how cars react to inputs unless in the virtual world, and believe me losing the rear end at 70mph and controlling it with a car in the adjacent lane teaches a whole new level of understanding and respect.
I have sold my ae86 6 months ago after owning 15 years. It is great to learn car control. Now i have a gt86 or frs or 86 and you can do the same thing with the new confort features. A great car.
@@Diamotors, hello! Ive got a question. As a huge fan of this car. Were there any maintenance issues?
@@petrussian9324 are you talking about the ae86?
There is nothing special.
Just regular maintenance it is necessary. You have to be careful on rust.
@@Diamotors , i am just trying to get the money for one and trying to find out more info about the car, thank you for your reply!
@@petrussian9324 how much is it in your country?
1:30 i know it doesn't look like it, but those VHS clips you posted are pretty heavily modified ae86s for the time. suspensions setups is what everyone put their money into, low HP, but very stiff suspension, even if the height was too high.
New Jimmer post LETS GOOOO!!!!!
"The 86 is a car that trains the driver." Fujiwara Bunta
Back in the last part of the 90s a guy i knew had a completely stock AE86, in a blue close to the last one that followed you. I absolutely loved that car. How it behaved in corners, how the engine sounds, how you're sat in the car, the looks. I would never pay what people are asking for them now a days, but i'd have one in a heartbeat if it weren't for those insane prices. Can't wait to watch that video :) ..oh and: Absolutely agree. Even when watching, this is more fun than most simracing i see.
Jimmer, there's a port of this track for BeamNG... you know what to do!
Waiting for u on the downhill, I trained for years, just to have that day. 😉
i have a 5:10 in the stock 86 down akina, listening to you explain all techniques like shifting to 1st to shift weight and rotate car makes me think, when driving you never really think what you are doing through and you just kind of do it, like second nature i guess lol
Love the respect to iconic twincam, the holy grail of Irish car scene 🇮🇪
the ae86 like the miata is just highly overrated in today car culture. they may be good in corners but thats just about it, they dont even look good.
This video really shows you the thought they put into using the AE86 as the main car for Initial D
I love these Touge style videos. In GT5 my favourite thing to do was generate the longest, wiggliest course I could and lap it in lightly tuned turds. Hardmode was keeping it in the "correct" lane for RHD/LHD cars.
Second
I have a 1st gen mr2 and thought that the only part that I share with the 86 is the engine, but it seems liek have of the entirior uses the same parts ^^
A few of the same parts, but the design is still quite different. I had an AW11 back in the day myself.
I've been saying this for decades. The most fun you can have in a car is being close to its limit. As you said, having a car that is on a knife-edge is really hard and perhaps not as satisfying. And going a million kilometers per hours is probably going to end badly, especially in the real world. Driving cars like these have a wider gap between going close to the limit and going over it. In a sense they're easier, but also so much more satisfying, and at safer and legal speeds to boot.
agreed I love driving older lower powers cars in sim racing instead of supercar tier stuff like GT3 and LMP stuff.
Its always fun driving a car that isn't big on power but big on personality, which is why a miata is a fun car in its own right. Imagine a 67 Mustang with some minor engine mods to push maybe 350-400 bhp with more attention given to brakes, suspension and tires. How would that fair on the Touge?
Akina is my absolute fave it's somewhere in an intermediate level imo. it's got sharp hairpins, chicanes, fast turns, and straightaways which makes it fun to race on.
Shoutout to editor chan, great editing!
a black limited is a mega based choice for you to use, jimmer. cant wait to see what you got irl, and keep up these vids! love the cinematic shots and replays!
hey jimmer.. i started sim racing because of ur videos like 3 years ago. sadly a year ago a had to sell my g29 to a friend of mine to pay off rent and food for my workers during the big rona pandemic. i actually cried while making decision to sell that wheel. but watching ur videos, seeing u from ur cabin to a decent house makes me wanna really save up money to buy a new wheel, might be a t300rs. progress kinda slow with me havin a kid recently, anyway wish me luck.

I love these videos. And I can't wait to see your reveal video. 👀
Please try tsubaki line it’s way more fun than akina
Does anyone have links or names of the mods used here?
Tape your arm to the steering wheel!
been playing controller my whole life, i only started using a steering wheel a couple of months ago. the slap of reality where i couldn't even drive anything above 300hp in a straight line was so infuriating. but when it puts me in a situation where i have to start learning the absolute basics with low hp cars (i use a honda s800. mad little cars, love it!) i have to say it sparked an even more intense desire to keep playing, keep practicing, keep learning how to feel the car through a steering wheel. first time i got podium in a 30 lap tsukuba race was more rewarding than anything else i've ever done. makes me super happy that all those hours spent learning the car actually gives me actual visible progress. i'll be moving myself to the mx5 cup cars this week, which will hopefully be a good bump in difficulty. super excited!
Thanks Jimmy for do y thing, love it, always!
A wise man once said if in doubt flat out lol
Slower cars and a circuit sized to match will always be more fun to race with other people than super fast race cars! I used to do a lot of R/C racing where typically everything is crazy fast and crazy high grip. The most fun I had was finding a group where we deliberately ran slower cars and less grip on a track sized right for it. We did that for years and it never got boring.

Since I have no relation to JDM, except for laughing down at it from a, admittedly very Audi, BMW and Porsche horse, (And Hope people forget the 90s when the Japanese were laughing😅) I have no clue why the AE86 is that legendary.
That black Skyline got stuck behind the world's widest AE86.
I know what you mean about the super-advanced, super-powerful, super-downforce-y cars with super-sticky tires and traction control/anti-lock brakes. It gets boring driving them. It's like playing a game with a big cheat code or in god mode--it feels like cheating and isn't as rewarding. You get to where you have more fun driving a '65 GT350 or a MkI or MkII GT40 on the 'Ring or Bathurst or un-chicaned Le Mans. Just row the gears, heel-and-toe, steer with the throttle, 4-wheel drift, all the old-school driving techniques. It _means_ more to eke out a great lap in one of those old-school cars where you have to _earn_ it, where the car doesn't do most of it for you.
I've made many mistakes in life, but selling my AE86 was the worst of them 😭😭
I bought it off the original owner, who was an old lady. It was bone stock obviously. Mint condition. Only had the carby engine, but still fun as hell!!
Sold the bitch for 1K 10 years ago because I blew the engine and also got a naughty sticker slapped on it from the cops because they didn't like my choice of wheels...
how much the 'body language' of the Toyota reminds me of the old times with NFS: PORSCHE and Microsoft FFB wheel...20 years ago. lmao. boats on wheels are fun
That's why i love riding my Honda Grom so much more than any other bike ive ridden. 9hp is a hoot to push to its limit.

Not gonna lie I've never really liked 86's tbh(actually one of the very few JDM's that I'm just not fond of at all), but I do absolutely fucking LOVE videos where Jimmy is genuinely having fun and not doing the "I'm a helmet" routine getting down on himself.

Funny, I often do a few runs of the Akina downhill in the TU server, and more often than not in an r34. Not saying I was the one racing Jimmy, but there's a non-zero chance that it was me in that black r34.
I miss my Trueno 😔
Damn new Akina map looks nice.
Going to aim for the 430. Just need to cut 14 seconds :(. Luckily there are a bunch of courners to make it up on
in forza 3 I used to destroy people who had cars 2 or 3 classes above the stock 86 on the Touge track. even when the uphill was included and I ended up minutes behind, the 86 would catch up on the downhill. don;t change anything on the stock car though, you'll ruin it.
I couldn't agree more with the sentiment of slow cars being just as fun to drive as fast ones. Typically they're in the dynamic range far more often than high performance cars and dynamic driving is where the fun is at imo, not speed, power or grip - as impressive and cool as those can be on their own.
RWD shitboxes > pretty much anything else
I'm baised but i would argue something like a Mki MR2/aw11 is a better trainer then a ae86, but im sure many a argument could be made for various momentum cars.
Now you just need a cryptic father figure to change parts/tuning without your knowledge to incrementally improve your driving.
The ae86 isn't a performance car, it's a carolla, an econobox. Which imo makes the gt86 misnamed, it should be a Celica.
I just picked up a 1985 Supra. The 86's big brother. I'm going to really anger people by K swapping it :)
