- My thoughts on the Red Souls (aka Bullet Souls) in Dawn of Sorrow. Keep in mind these rankings are mostly based around speedruns and randomizers!

My chat informed me that I am the only person who does not care for Mandragora. It's probably a tier low - I will try it out more often in future randomizers!! Otherwise quite happy with this list, but please don't crucify me for that one LOL
Mandragora is not too expensive in MP. It just cost 30 MP and can hit hard like Malacoda and low level Great Axe Armor and the range is pretty good. It's is one of the best soul in vanilla game so there is no reason it's that low.
yeah, casually speaking, I remember my one playthrough of Dawn of Sorrow involving me maining Mandragora over Erynis. I'm not exactly a speedrunner or anything, so I defer to your expertise, but... yeah.
for a soul thats max on 1. its big aoe. and good damage and low cost. its quite a carry if u get it early on. and can easilly boss stomp
i dont think any other soul comes close early on maybe axe. but it needs lvl 9 and the arc is awkward as hell. plus can only hit 1 target.
killer clown is slow AF
Cave Troll will always find a place in my heart for making Dimitrii ridiculously easy. He only copies the base level of the soul so he's stuck with an attack that has barely more range than the arm casting it and stands there like an idiot while it waggles feebly.
I remember using a similar trick against Dimitrii in Julius mode. I switched to Yoko and used her fire against him, Dimitrii copied the fire (which has pathetic range), and then i switched back to Julius and spammed whip attacks (which have higher range). Pretty funny ngl.
Would love to see a Bloodstained Shard Tier List.
Almarac sniper is cost effective, available early in a vanilla game, and can be spammed while you're moving through a room and still approaching enemies. It's piercing damage instead of slashing, which is better against bat company and a couple other bosses/enemies. As a bonus, it combos with skeleton archer, auto-firing while you're charging it. That's niche, but useful against certain bosses that give you the opportunity.
The Castlevania collection at PC caused your channel to be recommended! I've been watching some of your runs in the channel and I love it! I never knew Malacoda was this strong until I watched you.
My take aways: Malacoda, Malacoda, Malacoda. Interesting to learn about all the non-Malacoda red souls that are out there in case they come up in Randomizer. Keep up the great work, Jupiter.
Being a late game soul. Is what it makes it not-so-good. You are better relying on Yorik for grounded bosses and axe armor or amarilic sniper for other bosses/enemies.
Succubus can be used to heal from candles. If you have MP to spare, can be helpful to keep you alive.
Most of the time, the invincibility and teleportation glitches are way more fun.
Lv9 Bomb Armor is actually useful for farming Final Guard
@@tearsregretsinc5475 Final guard is strong against every type so type does not matter. Bomb armor has short range but high damage to fight against final guard.

The coolest use of the slaughterer soul is the room full of fish heads pillars next to the piano room.
my favorite is mandragora you just throw it and it works with giant range also can get it very early

Another game changer is if you tap it just before the first one explodes you basically throw two at once. Çan cut them down to size very very fast
I love the Mandragora soul! It is a high tier soul for me
yeah same 1 level is all u need and its high damage. making short work of dario aguni and any boss really.
as its flat damage not elemental. only downside is learning the hitbox which is easy.
Slimes are my personal favorite bullet soul. Une is only really useful for killing iron golems. Rapid hits
I wanna see weapons tier list for dawn, or at least weapon categories as a summary.
Imp is 100% super useful for taking down Iron Golems, it'd be a nightmare farming for that soul without an Imp soul. Definitely a niche soul though as once you have the soul(s) you need there's very little use for it.
Your best weapons against the golem for la first run are the une/bat company/dead pirate combo. You can replace it for puppet master. Cestus and Persephone to heal instead.
You see. Actually this enemy has a blind spot located at its back and if you stuck yourself at the closest wall. It will never touch you there. This works on any room where the golem shows up.

Do you play Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia? I'd be interested in your take on sub-weapons and glyphs for those games.

Interesting. My runs always end up revolving around fire demon, because it hard carried me my first play through. So weird to see it as not as good as I imagined. I'll see if the same thing happens with Lightning Doll when I watch Aria's one.

Rycuda is chain lightning. Each level makes it target one more enemy. Level 1 is bad but have like 3 or 4 and it is a big improvement.
yeah for farming ghost and medusas its really damn nice.
How about making tier lists on the armor pieces in Aria of Sorrow? Since its the only one missing in your AoS tierlist series. o.O"
And enemies too depending on how hard or annoying they are to deal with.
Just coming back to post now that Jupiter has realized the true power of Yorick.
I just beat the game again after playing it as a kid. Ended up using Hell Boar for most of the game because of the crazy damage. Glad to see it's not just me
I like Succubus for Casual and Rando, because you can suck the blood out of candles for some reason. So you can just farm those for a full heal instead of using your healing items that you might need for bosses. Can be a life saver if save rooms in Rando are in very dumb spots and you don't want to go the long way.
Hell boar, from my experience using it does quite a bit more damage than Slaughterer at the expense of shorter range, and both of their respective damages can skyrocket while you're using devil, especially when they're fully upgraded. As someone who loves using punch weapons in these games, they are both invaluable to me from how well they can weapon art cancel into each other, lol
this game is one of my all time favs but this tier list made me realize how few souls I used whenever I played this. I just used killer clown until I had access to flame demon, every run
Succubus can be used to heal off of lamps. Mandragora can be used with skeleton ape for more range. Amalaric Sniper can be used with skull archer to get automatic free casts while you charge the guardian soul. Killer clown can be spammed super hard with just backdashes for big damage. Flame demon has synergy with Bat company for a fireball in bat form.
yeah i think its more of a only this soul. not combos. but i agree combo souls are really nice to use.
I have used Une as a last-ditch option against Abaddon and Bat Company.

Succubus has a unique glitch in certain areas of the game where if you use it against a wall and you spam the knife special that lets you teleport around back, do two quick stabs then teleport back, sometimes the game will move you the room adjacent to it. This works easily in Boss Rush, especially in later rooms.
Not to mention the glitched souls u can obtain, such as Julius and Yoko subweapons
He speedruns dos. He knows about that glitch, everyone does.
I always farm max slimes, filling boss roms with bouncy slimes is very fun
Man, the devs really held back on making Mandragora top tier. If it could be leveled up and/or boosted by Skeleton farmer, it would probably be the best burst option in the game.
Wait, how is Mandragora a tier below Guillotiner? is it because the latter is easier to kill and has a lower rarity soul? (1 star vs 2 star)
Even with that I'd still place Mandragora higher tbh, or at least in the same tier; it has a MUCH bigger AoE and it only costs 6MP more. You can easily kill multiple enemies with it, so it ends up costing less because you're using it less.
....never used Malacoda before. My main Red Soul when I used to play was GAA. Only issue is that it's a nerfed Red Minotaur...Also pricey, but you cant go wrong with a Giant Axe swinging. Even Maou Soma agrees.
yeah the giant axe is nice and covers your whole area. but the cost... and also rarity.
seems mandra drops way faster and is needed for flying humanoid.
Have you played Dawn of Dissonance or any similar hackroms? I really like the soul differences there. Would be nice to know your thoughts about it.
I have played Dawn of Dissonance! Might be the best custom Dawn hack out there; big fan. I did stream my casual playthrough and Malacoda was just as overpowered as in vanilla, which made the endgame pretty easy, but I've heard there were balancing changes since. Would like to go back to it again soon!

For me my favorites are warg, great axe, and ryucuda
iirc Bomber Armor Loses the fuse time when it's fully leveled and it explodes the moment it touches the ground.
So i am guessing since it not very useful due to major bosses being airborne.
I believe you're missing Zephyr and Puppet Master. Even so, I think I have a good idea as to where those two would place.
I will say Une has somewhat good use if you wanna gimp Dmitrii. Otherwise, it's pretty bad and even with that factor in mind, it's probably better to just quickly kill him with a soul like Malacoda. Warg, I'd swap with Fleaman at least imo. Never really found a use with it's short range and I found that Fleaman can rack up pretty good damage, particularly against Gergoth. Apart from that, it's good on occasion.
One thing I'd note about Aguni is that it absolutely tears through Abaddon's locusts, so it being grounded in this context, especially when you get the soul so close to that point, is not too bad. Still definitely situational with other bosses tho.
Overall, nice list that I can't really comment on much otherwise either because I agree with you on the majority of these placements or I'm not very in the know on DoS meta -even tho I much prefer it over AoS.-
Decided not to place Zephyr or Puppet Master as they're progression Reds, but I think both are honestly pretty useful! I've gotten some mileage out of both in various randomizers.
Good god, never use une on Dimitri!
Striking him with weapons becomes way harder. You're better off gimping him with axe armour since it will just fly over your head at the right distance.
If possible use yorick. You can slide if from pretty far away while being safe from him, doing some pretty serious hits.
@@jason47hitmanforhire there are certain red souls Dmitri couldn't copy so I just gimp him with a weak early game soul, and then just smack him with Slaughterer(a soul he can't copy.)
yeah puppet master can be so good to avoid damage but downside u need to wait for it to land.
zephyr is even better but to bait dimitri if ussually stick with skeleton unless i get lucky with une.
but dont ever give him mandragora i found that out the hard way :D
Une is pretty good for Dario, its the only time i every use une in dawn
Used une against zephyr, it was pretty good to avoid that annoying counter since you can get away while dealing dmg

You can put that red thing 4 tiers higher and I'd still prefer Guillotiner. I don't think I've ever done a play through were I didn't max it out. The vertical range is so good, you can lag cancel almost everything for massive damage.
Une has one decent niche use, passing it to Dimitri, actually, passing souls with really bad range and/or damage to Dimitri is one way to make that fight easier.
For example if you're using a weapon with range like a gun, rpg or the throwing weapons, give Une to him and the fight is free.
rycuda just makes me wish for the lightning doll...
If you had placed Mandragora based on it being loud and annoying, I'd be like, yeah fair enough lol. But the hitbox? Idk, I actually replayed DoS in the past few months and used the soul a lot and thought it's hitbox was absurdly good. It really felt like if you can time it properly in mid air, you can get 90% of the entire screen in it's hitbox

Seems like the Malcoda soul has been overturned seems bugish to me lol
So I started a DoS randomizer with a lot of mixes. And the first few rooms were like: here's mirror mail, here's Kaiser Knuckle with slash-dark-holy-poison, here are hippogriff and black panther, Armor Knights drop Abbadon with stab-fire-dark-holy.
I thought I was rolling in, until the only path forward is through the red soul corridor and I need to find and farm the guy who gives homunculus.
I want to die.
Also a OoS one where you start in the save/warp room. Then you have a zombie horde corridor. Then Barlowe. No other path.
Just my luck.

Une's best use in my opinion is dying on Dimitri.
How come Mandragora is expensive at 30 MP but Great Axe Armor is cheap at 60 MP?
Tbh you shou've put fire demon and Fleaman higher, if only bc you can use them while using bat company
Bomber Armor Lvl 9 shreds every single grounded enemy. But I do agree it's shit unless it's lvl 9
You're forgetting one thing about Bomber Armor. Maxed up, it is insane. It turns from a time bomb to a bomb that just blows up the second it hits a solid surface
So yeah, you are underating it
The range and damage are still doo doo at max level tho
Bomber armor is actually usable at level 9 but its still absolute trash until you get the level 9
Une does have a niche application vs Dmitrii, as a safe option since his bullet soul becomes Une (which you can dodge easily, while he doesnt dodge most of the time
Imp: Good, you need to know what enemies have lower MP but it can help clearing out enemies if you don't have better Reds
Une: Niche, it's good on ground-based enemies like Dario and Dmitri (especially the latter as he'll copy a useless soul), but is pretty useless on most other bosses due to staying on the ground
Ryucuda: Still niche but i remember it being better as it's levelled up
Mandragora: Great, but probably on the lower-end

Malacoda: Great, but its awkward hitbox and slow animation can be a detriment at times, to the point where i don't think it quite deserves its own tier, yes, jump-cancelling it is amazing
ryucuda is broken once leveled. the more levels the more chain hits.
perfect for medusa and ghost farming. hell even the many merman in that area before the 666 door.
or perfect for the 5 zombie room to make cestus for tons of cash early on. now that i think about it :) then again so is witch. but witch is ground only.
I'd actually prefer Zombie over homunculus. Both can block projectiles. The latter just walks quickly but has the same damage, therefore less hits. Zombie though, walks slowly and does more hits that way, and therefore giving you more mileage for projectile blocking.
malacoda looks lame especially when you are newbie. never thought it's that strong
i dont understand the hype for malacoda, malacoda does 200 damage a hit, claim plus devil does 400, whats the point of using it, yes you could make that comparison for all other red souls as well, but early on in the game axe armor actually outdamages your close range weapon, so in my opinion its better since its at least worth using early on. i feel like this list is made with randomizers in mind, but in the base game, malacoda is completely pointless to get 5 minutes before the final boss when you likely already have claim. also it doesnt make any sense in the context to the aria list as well, so malacoda is completely useless against the final boss, but its somehow 2 tiers above the rest, meanwhile red minotaur basically one shots the final boss in aria and despite this its somehow worse than lightning doll xD ofc malacoda does more damage than other red souls, you get it literally 5 minutes before the final boss, it doesnt make any sense to compare the damage to other red souls unless your playing a randomizer, which this tierlist seems to be based arround completely.
