I have a Dawn of Sorrow guide book that refers to Menace's heart as being a nipple. It's to your discretion if you are enlightened or damned for knowing that such a thing exists.
Abaddon is interesting because he's the penultimate boss, but he can be trivialized by the soul you get from the opening segment, the spear knight. Just spin those locusts away!
I think Menace has the reputation it has because it’s such a terrible inclusion story-wise. The game hypes up Dmitrii for the final fight and then it throws out a boss that comes out of nowhere like it’s a NES Final Fantasy game. Considering that Dawn is also the end of the timeline, it’s disappointing that Menace is such an anticlimax. Gameplay wise it’s good, as you said.
Kinda ironic that the final boss of Julius Mode is more remarkable, actually has build up, and is just better in every way, considering that mode barely has any dialogue compared to the main game.
I would have had Dmitrii fight you before sacrificing Celia, then the fight ends and he kills her to gain the power of a powerful demon, but loses control of it,and it enters Soma, who then proceeds to struggle to hold it back. Then Soma has to have an internal battle with his dark side (manifested as Somacula in this case).
From a non-speedrunner perspective, I think Death is more enjoyable than Abaddon. Death has a lot of different moves that are all telegraphed well enough to be realistically dodged even the first time, and during the second phase, he lives up to his name with the Skull Barrage. Abaddon, by comparison, is too predictable for me, making him much easier as a result. Also think Dario is just a bad fight. His two moves are boring, if you don't manipulate him, his fire pillars can effectively lock you out of range for several seconds, his constant laughing is mind-numbing, and even his character is dull. There's nothing to get excited about with this guy, though that isn't saying much. But I do agree on Menace: the fight is challenging every time, but rarely does it get unfair, except on your very first run, when the sheer size of it is simply overwhelming. It's sad that it's such a non-descript amalgamation of nonsense design-wise, but the fight itself is pretty epic. Besides, there are very few Castlevania bosses in general that use verticality for bosses, and only Order of Ecclesia's Eligor comes to mind as a comparison.
Doesn't Dario technically have four "attacks" during his first encounter? Fireball, firewave, firepiller and teleport. Unless I got your comment totally wrong.
@@Exorion Okay, I forgot Firewave since he rarely ever uses that on me, but I don't consider teleportation an attack. I don't think that changes anything for Dario, though.
Sadly the mandatory touchscreen controls kinda ruin many of the boss fights in Dawn of Sorrow, especially the later ones with the more complex patterns. Completely unnecessary mechanic. Otherwise, the boss fights are not bad, many of them are great.
I personally find the easiest way to deal with Dmitrii is Almaric Sniper, then attack while crouched. He literally can't do anything to you. Persephone lv 8 is my favourite way of dealing with projectiles, including Death's mini scythes, Zephyr's knives and Abaddon's locusts.
I assume this tier list factors in fast / speedrun-esque gameplay heavier than not, otherwise I would argue against some choices. But firstly I wanna say I agree with most placements (as well as ordering). Dimitri could be way higher if he either had a default set but would basically take three of your souls at random before the fight each try or copy all of them and cycle through them. That would make him way more dynamic and interesting. Dario really suffers from his first encounter being really boring (even outside of flamepillar manipulation) as well as being the only one required on a normal playthrough. Combined with everyone skipping the way better second encounter (once again ignoring flame pillar manipulation) because of only Aguni being required (hell, even the boss rush does not include Dario 2, for shame). Flying Armor is a great base and I wish he would've gotten a rematch. Keep the base version as a introductiory boss but give us a faster version later on with more varied attack patterns. In general I feel some boss fights would jump at least one tier if they simply were (way) faster. Bosses I would rank (way) lower are Malphas, Menace and Puppet Master. Malphas is really slow and has the issue of safe-spot syndrome. Basically you can park your ass almost right under him and he will never ever touch you. Because the only actions which can hit you there are him landing (which is really easy to avoid) and his dark spheres which take ages to announce themselves, making it even easier to avoid them. Puppet Master is only ever dangerous because of his summoned dolls. But those, as well as his iron maiden puppet, die so fast he really, reaaaaaaaaally can't do shit against most weapon and soul combinations. Menace I would honestly seperate into two entities: he himself would land in bad for me. He just can never hit me. He is way too slow, telegraphs everything early and more than enough weapons and souls keep such distance that nothing can hit you out of surprise. The only dangerous (and more interesting) part of his battle are the spawns because they can take some hits, can be fast, unpredictable and do high damage. They bring the danger, kick up the nerves and are the only part of the fight anyone has to divert any attention to. Honestly I would prefer an expansion of his first phase with the actual use of (ranged, projectile-like) attacks (especially the swords) in combination with the spawns. But because he is the way he is I find him highly, highly boring and would always choose Somacula over him (I do it randomly for variety's sake). Rahab is a boss which sadly can't work in any different way because of how his patterns and attacks are designed. Dawn of Dissonance showed me that being able to go underwater for that fight makes him even more boring because he literally can't do anything to touch you. The only thing that sorta works is something like having Rahab in Flying Armor's(?) Bossroom. Because his switches between hitable and too off-screen are overall shorter, his repositional movements are actual attacks and the existence of gravity makes it so that you have to do careful movement again. If I ever were to change Rahab's boss arena I would go with that approach: small arena around middle height position with faster animations and no water. The way he now is makes him just really boring. Yorick is only a so-so argument because souls can turn many bosses into better (or worse) experiences, so being reliant on one to be better overall is kinda a yikes in my book. Stray thoughts but I find Zephyr to be too slow as well as not having enough projectile patterns to be that interesting. Death did profit heavily from his new arena in Dawn of Dissonance, making movement more tight and carelessness punishing with high-damage spikes is something his huge bossroom sorely lacks (still a neat fight, tho). Overall Boss Tier Lists are a hard case for me because the dynamik, difficulty and fun-factor can fluctuate drastically depending on way too many factors. For example I vastly prefer the final PoR boss over most other NDSvania bosses but only because I literally forgot the manipulation for his battle. Fights like Richter in the same game got worse because he is easily susceptible to pattern manipulation. Somacula's second phase also suffers from having a safe-spot which allows easy dodges for all attacks. Not to mention which equipment and strats are allowed for each boss fight. Those can shift the dynamik heavily as well (for example Aguni becomes way easier and kinda boring if one uses 2hand-weapons because he can't really threaten you under / closely next to him). In the end I find it kinda problematic if one has to restrict themselves from using specific things (or, worse, having to avoid options) to have a good boss fight. Being able to approach things in different ways is a huge plus but if it ends up with "way too easy, boring or similar" I feel that's not something everyone wants. Anyway, I rambled on long enough. If anything me partaking in the discussion with a semi-long comment that does not include any form of discredit prolly shows that I enjoyed your video...which I did. Looking forward to more content, as always.
Thanks for the write-up! I'd say these are all fair points. My perspective is definitely influenced by speedruns; optimizing fights typically makes them much more interesting, since you can't rely on safe spots and have to worry about maximizing DPS.
@@JupiterClimb That's fair. I prefer level 1 hard mode runs without any clock, therefore safe-spots in any boss fight make them way more managable (but also potentially more boring) in such an enviroment.
