For all the fools who don't know, at this time Spidey and MJ just got back together after their brief marital separation where they honestly had one of the most heartwarming conversations about what it means to be married and the stress Peter's super hero activities put on their marriage. The plane is owned by a mob boss and all of its crew are tied to the mob, Peter is working for him only because the super villain of the story arc has a vendetta against the mob boss and doesn't care who gets in the way. Thus to protect the innocent, Peter ends up reluctantly working for the guy since it will allow him to respond faster when the villain attacks.
