Scott took French lessons (specifically the words of this song) in order to make it sound accurate, but his pronunciation in the verses (especially the second verse) isn't completely accurate. That being said, I was still very impressed given that he had never learned French before!
Also, I think you should read the lyrics (translated for your convenience: lyrics.wikia.com/wiki/Stromae:Papaoutai/en ) and watch the original video of the song by Stromae. It's actually a really sad song about his dad. Basically, Stromae is complaining that his dad is never around, and his mom tells him that he's always busy with work. It's based on Stromae's life actually, because his dad died in the Rwandan genocide when he was very young, but his mom told him that he was always busy somewhere else. It might make you wanna dance if you don't know the lyrics, but it makes me tear up every time LOL. (Btw, Stromae himself plays the dad in the original music video, but the lyrics are from the perspective of the child.)
Pentatonix's video is a response to the original video - I remember them saying in an interview that since the dad in the original video is so unresponsive, they decided to be dolls in their video as a way to entertain the kid.
Anyway! I hope this was helpful and hopefully reading the lyrics gives you some insight into the meaning of the song!

Scott learned the song phonetically with help of a French tutor. He has a slight accent in certain words, like "maman," but it's near perfection.
Check out literally any of Lindsey Stirling's story videos - "Arena," "We Are Giants," "Roundtable Rival," "Shatter Me," or "Take Flight." Her videos are incredibly imaginative and her music is captivating. It's not poppy music like PTX does, but I think you'd really appreciate them. My personal favorite video is Arena.

Julianna wouldn’t be surprised that they did some in high school to since they were in choir back then. Choirs sing in all different languages including French and Scott Mitch and Kirstin all were in the Texas all state choir and would have sung music on that high a level.

I wouldn't say he learned French. He hired a French tutor to help with pronunciation, but he learned the song phonetically.

Lindsay is a genius violinist who has really brought the violin into 21st century pop music! She was also a contestant on last year's Dancing With the Stars, where it turned out that she is also a terrific dancer! As for the French (I speak a little, took the class for four years in school, but that was like 45: years ago, so most of it is gone, but I suspect that Mitch knows French, since he loves Paris, but I also assume that Scott does it phonetically.
They sang in Japanese (Perfume medley), Korean (Gangnam style), Mandarin (Tien Mi Mi?) as well as French. I don't speak those languages but I've read that they did the Japanese and Mandarin well. Not sure about the others. I think a bit less well.

If Scott has you shook in this video you should watch some of the live performances of it from their last summer tour. He growls throughout the song and does some pretty sensual moving and it's amazing. The fandom had a meltdown every time a new video surfaced of it.
The Sing Off competition would be great, but it's a huge commitment. 12-15 (depending on if you want to see all the performances or just the challenge ones), at about 8 min. each.

The French accent isn't 100 per cent perfect, but it is really solid for an American speaker. They're covering a song by a Belgian rapper named Stromae, so I couldn't say whether Scott really speaks French or just listened to the song really carefully to make sure he was getting the phonetics down. Check out the original song too, you might really like it as well.

If you don't know Lindsey, she loves both dance and violin, and as a performer wanted to find ways to combine both at the same time. I'd say "Master of Tides" is a good starting point since it was filmed live. Its crazy the amount of talent and passion she brings to all her projects.
I don't believe any of them speak French but they just decided to do this French song. They also do a Perfume medley and most of that is in Japanese. You should react to it.
Fun fact Scott was sick one time during concert and Mitch took over sounding beautiful and knew the french lyrics flawless. It's somewhere on youtube.

as a canadian who is surrounded by people who speak french, and is learning french, i can confirm that that is VERY GOOD FRENCH
As a singer I/we get to sing in many different languages. I have sung in French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish. My first language is English. It's the beautiful thing about music. It's truly a international language.

Yes, Scott and Mitch took French lessons specifically for this song. The rest just had to sing the title of the song, so they were off the hook. From what I understand, they knew no French beforehand.
I remember the show, Sing Off. Back when Nick Lachey was still yummy and Pentatonix were in college. I think they were anyway. They were the best a capella group way back then. I’m with you, Mitch is my boo. Lol sure hope he has a thing for straight grandmas!

Scott studied French for weeks just to sing this song, he wanted to have a perfect accent.
Lindsey Sterling is a great violinist, i highly recommend her videos Arena, Radioactive and Roundtable Revival for reactions. She also came in 2nd place on last seasons DWTS (Dancing with the Stars), Those are other videos I recommend as in the video of her of her Paso Doble she danced with a pulled / separated muscle (her rib muscle separated from her rib bone) and she continued the season.

I'm kinda surprised you haven't heard of Lindsey, she's definitely worth checking out. Her video titled Crystallize was her breakout that got her noticed, but there are so many great videos to choose from. She's incredibly talented and has forged her own style of performance - mixing dance, violin, dubstep, hip hop and more all into her stuff.

About Scott's lip twist: its a very Stromae mouth movement (Stromae being the original singer), so I think is a little easter egg homage. Their dance movements are also very similar to the ones in Stormae's video.
