This video has become a secret PTX favorite of mine. The makeup to make them look like dolls freaked me out a little at first, but after watching it a couple of times it really grew on me. And Lindsey Stirling does an amazing job playing violin and dancing! There are a couple of other collaborations they do with Lindsey - Radioactive, and Over the River, both worth reacting to.

"Penta" comes from Greek for Five. Also, there is the pentatonic scale which is a musical scale with five notes per octave, in contrast to the heptatonic scale, which has seven notes per octave (such as the major scale and minor scale). So, Pentatonix encompasses the five members and their musicality. That's my take on it.

You are totally correct. They took the pentatonic scale name and made it to Pentatonix by changing c to x. It's in several interviews.
      Greetings from Germany

I think they bring their own personally to the song they cover and honor the original at the same time. Note, Kevin is playing the cello and beatboxing AT THE SAME TIME.

Here are some more Pentatonix performances I'd like to hear your reactions to: Come Along (makes you want to dance), Royals, Mary Did You Know (I read it is one of Kirsten's favorites), and two from their Christmas Under the Stars-My Heart With You and Carol of the Bells. Love your reactions! Thanks.

Hello. Thank you for this. I love this video so much. I speak French and Scott did well. Scott is a great Stromae fan.
So wanted to do this and took French lessons
They are so creative. They have made 3 videos with Lindsey ( the dancing violinist). Try their cover of. Radioactive with her

Scott seems to have a knack for languages, at least to sing. he has done French, Italian, Japanese, Korean. I think all have done Japanese though. they try to have pronunciation just right. I think this video is an homage to the original.

I think your HUGE smiles say all I need to hear! I love this song. It's a bop! And because of them, I sought out the original artist's version. It was amazing. I know why you love Stromae so much. He's amazing. Oh and the Webster Definition of "pentatonic: consisting of five tones specifically : being or relating to a scale in which the tones are arranged like a major scale with the fourth and seventh tones omitted." They changed the last letter and there you have it.

Often when I see PTX songs I’ll go and check out the original if I don’t know it. That way I’ve expanded my musical experience. I never like to compare. Both are good in different ways. Are you going to react to Superfruit? They have a great album of songs.

I get what mean by two versions of the same song that are both different and incredible. While I am a big PTX fan and would love to see you react to them all the time, the band Disturbed has a version of Sound of Silence that I think you will find completely amazing but very different from the PTX version.

Andrei -- If you go through some of their interview videos & such, Scott said the name comes from the Pentatonic scale plus the fact that there are five members, plus 'X', "…because 'X' is cool!".
When they auditioned for 'The Sing Off' back in 2011, as you know they came together very quickly, adding Avi & Kevin only a week or so before the audition because the program required a minimum of five members per group. My guess is that, in the nerdy way of a capella choirs, they needed a name quickly, came up with Pentatonix, and it stuck. It's just nerdy enough for those who have some music training, and obscure enough to make it hard to pronounce for everyone else. I think that's why they've used "PTX" much more, on albums, RUclips, social media, merchandise, etc. etc. When they started out, they wanted to do well, but never imagined they'd do this well. So they've got a quirky name that was never tested out on focus groups or developed by marketers. But so many folks love them, they learn how to say the name anyway -- just like you & Dominika!

Compared to the original by Stromae this video is much less disconcerting. The Stromae video is much darker. I guess it makes sense since the song is really about an absent father. The Pentatonix version takes a bit of a lighter view of it and the father is just absent in the metaphorical sense, ignoring his son, rather than in the physical sense. The Pentatonix version also doesn’t deal with the second part of the song in anywhere near the dark terms the Stromae video does where the boy ends up becoming like his father.
