Stromae is one of my favorite artists so I have some info that might be helpful. First, his name is like 'maestro' but with the syllables flipped. Papaoutai is a play on words meaning 'Papa où t'es' which means, "Dad, where are you". He wrote it about his dad who died in the Rwandan genocide when he was young. This video was definitely inspired by the original video by Stromae but I think the original video gives more insight to the themes of the song (absent parents). One of the lines from the song that hits the hardest for me is: "Tout le monde sait comment on fait des bébés Mais personne sait comment on fait des papas" Which means "everyone knows how to make a baby, but no one knows what it takes to make a father".
I live in switzerland and dissected this song about 10 times in french class. It's interesting, I knew that he somehow lost his father, but not about the rwandan genocide.
They actually hired a French tutor for everyone to learn the accent and how to implement the inflections into the song. Scott of course had more time with the tutor for the fact he was lead the whole song. Not exactly sure why that is but I can't see anyone else taking lead on this song. Avi already has "Light in the Hallway" and Mitch is too high-registered for this song (IMO) and it IS about a boy and his father. Looks the lyrics up, some of it literally translates to "where are you, father?" And because it's the connection of father and son instead of with a female presence, I don't feel Kirstie would be such a good fit either
French is easier to sing than a lot of other languages, because where it wants to get stuck while you're singing is in your nose, which is where it should get stuck, because it's such a nasal language. German is a nightmare to sing, because it wants to get stuck in your throat to the point where you feel like you are choking on your own air (and please know I don't mean either of those disparagingly, just a statement on the physics of singing them). Almost all singers learn to sing in foreign languages phonetically. I've sung in American English, English English (I specify them separately because they are very different to sing in), French, German, Latin, Spanish, Italian, Norwegian, Russian, and some African dialect (can't remember which one, I apologize, it's been about 20 years). Universally in choirs, everyone is most comfortable singing Latin, Spanish and Italian, because they are big open vowels with only a few really important consonants, everything else is work outside of your own language, because they feel so much more consonants heavy, and there are more vowel options that most English speakers aren't used to using, and so struggle to make your mouth form those sounds (there is a vowel in German, that I literally can't make my mouth do, it just won't cooperate, and it's SO ANNOYING). My choir teacher in college is a phonetics geek, and I think he speaks like 3 or 4 languages fluently, specifically to teach his groups how to sing the songs properly, he got his doctorate in early music (stuff before 1600 I believe), which is primarily written in Latin, French, and Italian. It was great to learn from him.
you already reacted to Happy Now, that is an original of them. some other originals are : Sing Can´t sleep love Natural disaster Love again Hey momma Run to you and they have some more
From Wikipedia: The title of the song is an intentionally misspelled form of the phrase Papa, où t'es?, which translates as "Dad, where are you?". The lyrics of the song are about a boy living with his mother who suspects something is wrong when he no longer sees his father. The mother tries to make up excuses to prevent the narrator from discovering the truth about the whereabouts of his father of which the mother is even unaware. The chorus of the song repeats the words "Où t'es papa, où t'es?", translating to "Where are you Dad, where are you?". The song continues with the narrator pondering about the day he would become a father and the worries that would arise from the pressure of being a parent. His worries also consist of whether he will be loved or hated by his children and how he will be able to take up the role. From this, it goes back to the chorus and ends with a repetition of the song before the first chorus, going back to his interaction with his mother about the whereabouts of his father.
Yay!!!! I'm so glad you picked this one!! I agree with the others that the next one you would enjoy is Sound of Silence, its so emotional in that PTX way, you will LOVE it! Also, if you're looking for originals, their song "Happy Now" (which I think you reacted to already?) is their most recent; a very common favorite of theirs is "Can't Sleep Love" off of their self-titled album that is mostly originals, and my personal favorite original is Love Again, which if you liked Daft Punk you will love that one too.
My favorite originals are Sing, Can't sleep love and Love again. Sing always cheers me up. It's happy and upbeat and the music video is created with a lot of Pentaholics from all over the world. Can't sleep love is their first original that was popular in mainstream. And Love again is a lot like their Daft Punk medley and is a perfect showcase of their extreme capabilities! Love your reactions! And for tourdates and places go to ptxofficial.com 😁💜
Loved your reaction. Thanks. They have some great originals, many have already been listed, like "Run To You", Can't Sleep Love" and "Sing". I also love the originals "Water" and "Cracked". They don't have official videos but there are videos of them singing them online. The "PopSpring" special has three originals and "Evolution Of Michael Jackson".
They actually danced during the Sing off sessions, they acted a lot then, that was part of their winning the show. Nice reaction ! It’s about a lost dad, that song.
One of my favourite originals of theirs is Sing, it’s such an awesome song & I also LOVE their cover of Come Along. Great reactions, love watching your channel :)

Lexy Mich Lexy Mich thank you!! 🥺 the amount of people really depends, since it’s was their first time in mexico our venue only had around 3,000 people, VIP had like 22 people in it, for the q&a they took around 5 general questions, i got a poster signed and i got them to sign the corners of a blank sheet of paper so i could put our m&g pic in the middle and hang it in my room, i got around 30 seconds with each member of the group, idk how it is in the usa, and well what we talked about is more private but i had a really good experience overall, kirstin said “we’ve been internet friends forever” and that totally made my day, also they kept pointing and looking at me throughout the concert, they’re so thoughtful 🥺
One of the ptx videos that in my opinion shows a lot of their personalities as well as their talent is a video called “PTX random jamming/singing on the fly” You see behind the scenes clips of their tour as well as just random videos the group makes of each other when they’re singing and it really shows what they are capable of!
I've been watching you for a few months and just now subscribed. Kevin's cello is named Beyoncé. Pentatonix is incredible in concert. So much fun. I do hope they hold one near you so you can have that experience. Thanks for the fun reactions.
This was a fun video by them. I love their original Run To You. Can you react to Scott Hoying (from Pentatonix) and Mario Jose doing a cover of LP's "Lost on You" (with a Hans Zimmer beat), it is incredible. Love your reactions. 😊
You have GOT to react to White Winter Hymnal. I know it's not winter yet, but it is the greatest example of hand choreography that the group has ever done!
Yes my friend, they do indeed have an album of originals from 5 years ago and they have released an EP of a few new originals the last week of June, it's called; "At Home", and they are supposedly releasing a full album of new originals as well as a new Christmas Album this year! Our Angels are keeping very busy as usual! Peace, Love and Light!
They have come to Canada their last 2 tours. Toronto in 2018 and Montreal in 2019 are the closest the have come to the east coast. I am also in Nova Scotia and travelled to see them both tours. Definitely worth it.
They have an original album out, very creatively titled, PENTATONIX. Amazing right. They are all great songs and there are videos for most of them but not all. There are live performances of them taken by fans at their concerts and some have been performed on live TV.
Scott spent a good deal of time to learn French just to sing this song....it's amazing just how much work this group puts into their work....and it shows....EVERYTIME...
I'd recommend checking out "Run to You" if you want to see one of their most unique originals that doesn't get nearly enough love. Their cover of "You're a Mean one Mr. Grinch" is fantastic too and showcases the new bass, Matt. If you want to save the latter for the holiday season I don't blame you, but they do have about a million Christmas songs in their catalog, so don't feel like you have to save it either Anyways, it's really hard to go wrong with PTX in general as you've seen so those are just a couple of options. 😉
Love your reactions! One of their original is sing. The had their fans send in videos of dancing to the music, and then used it in their video. Also on the wharf they had fans come and join them as they sang. Everyone looked like they were having fun.
Greetings from Quebec! I just discovered your channel while looking at PTX videos! I'm glad you share your reaction, especially with the PTX videos. Being unable to share moments with friends in these harder times makes your work even more relevant! Thanks anyway, I hope you go through their whole library :D
@Lily J gave you good background on the song. Its creator, Stromae, is Belgian and I believe Scott encountered the song during one of their European tours and brought it to the group, proposing that they do it. To my American ears his French is convincing. He started out by imitating the original recording for pronunciation, and then put himself through a short crash course in the nuances of French phonetics. In my experience musicians, if they have a really fine-tuned ear (as the members of PTX do) can grab hold of the "sound" of a language with some concentrated work, even if they don't speak it.
If you're a fan of Avi and his bass parts definitely check out Home Free. Tim Foust is their bass and he gets insanely low as well. They have a lot of good songs. I recommend Ring of Fire, Avi is featured on it and it showcases his range a little as well.
You should check out their "Little Drummer Boy" video. It's one of their earlier pieces. Everybody gets a chance to solo, including Kevin, but Kirstin really shines in that one.
Scott learned French and was coached. Another reactor that is French said Scott is singing without an accent. This is about a father that is emotionally absent in his son's life. Papaoutai translates to "Where are you Dad?" A cover of Stromae.
Someone else already listed several originals I love & would've suggested, so I'll just add Cracked 💔 to that list. It's a blues/soul song & so has Scott as lead since he usually does that style the best, & it's very catchy!
Okay, info about this song: The title 'Papaoutai' is actually a sentence in French. 'Papa, ou t'es' which means: father, where are you. According to stromae, the absence of his dad was the inspiration for this song (his dad got killed in Rwanda in 1994) its about the struggles a little kid goes through when growing up without a father figure. I think Pentatonix got the grasp of what this song was about and made their own take on it in the form of this video. They portray the imaginary world of the kid in the video, he has to play by himself bc his dad doesn't have time for him. A second explanation of why they are dolls is bc Stromae plays a doll in his MV for this song as well (but life-size) in his video the kid puts him in scenarios where he can pretend his dad is there with him. (I'm not a French speaker either, I just did a lot of research on this song)
They came to Bangor, Maine a few years ago. Once the world figures out how to get on with living after COVID-19, I'm sure they will be back out on tour. You will get your chance.
Scott had a French teacher work with him to get the words right. They did Gangnam way back in their early days and it's done in Korean. Ought to check that out as it's really fun.
Hi Eddie, another great reaction, I love how you appreciate, and are still blown away by their talents. I subscribed the first time you reacted to PTX, and have been with you ever since. All the suggested songs are amazing and I will be here for everyone. You are rapidly becoming my fav reactor :)
here is a little list of some more songs you should react to from them: can't hold us, sound of silence, royals, mad world, blinding lights, imagine, dreams, come along, and of course more songs to go, maybe some of their evolution songs and their sing off journey to learn a little bit more about them
Aha...live, you say that you would like to see them? React to AHA! Live in Singapore at Star Vista PLEASE!!! I know once you see it, you'll wonder why you waited so long. And they are friggin' amazing in concert; even when you watch/hear them live, it's still almost unbelievable how great they are!
can you react to pentatonix the sound of silence scott has a deep voice in it. pentatonix love again , superfruit singing beyonce ,the promise, future friends or scott hoying and mario jose lost on you beautiful song
I wish you could find someone to translate and redo the reaction with the lyrics up on the screen. Another great collaboration is Todrick Hall, who is SO talented , is the Wizard of Ahhhs. Kristie sings 3 different characters and Avi's bass is sick.
They have great original music. Try Run to You, Sing, Can't Sleep Love, Cracked (IHeart studio performance) You can hear them sing in Japanese in their medley of Perfume songs. I highly recommend it.
They also sing a song in Korean. The reaction couple kept committed how hard it was to get get right. Sorry I can't remember the title but will try to find it for you.
Great reaction. It is so cool how they introduce us to lots of fantastic music that we might never have heard. If you can, check out the original video/song by a French singer called Stromae, which has 733 million views!. It is a very cool video, and tells the story of a boy whose father is absent, and his boy needs and misses him.
somehwere there is a video on YT where they are singing this live and scott lost his voice for a few minutes and mitch just took over singing his part too. they got each other's backs always. poor Avi never got the best make up in 'wizard of aahs' when they are dressed as the munchkins its hilarious and sad what avi looks like but then he comes back as the lion and its perfect!
Just a quick note about the song! I think you would love to also hear the original one by Stromae along with other songs of his: Formidable, Alors On Dance, Ta Fête, Tous Les Mêmes, Carmen. He’s really a great singer and artist, an unconventional one, that I think you would appreciate to discover. International and foreign music is also a great world to get into!😊
U HAVE TO REACT TO MORE LINDSEY STUFF!! A good place to start would be Beyond The Veil! She has a lot of original cool music that i'm sure you will love!
"Run to You" is my favorite PTX original by far. I also love "New Year's Day," "Rose Gold" and "Sing."
This please! "Run to You" is awesome and there aren't enough reactions to it out there right now.
Yeess Run to You! My favorite original too, please react to it
New Year's Day is my favorite original by them ever. Rose Gold is second. But seriously, all of their originals are incredible.

Scott’s french accent is surprisingly good considering he doesn’t speak the language
Yeah, he learned the entire song phonetically.
It's not uncommon for singers to learn lyrics phonetically. ABBA did the same with their early English songs.
They actually hired a French tutor for everyone to learn the accent and how to implement the inflections into the song. Scott of course had more time with the tutor for the fact he was lead the whole song. Not exactly sure why that is but I can't see anyone else taking lead on this song. Scott learned French and was coached. Another reactor that is French said Scott is singing without an accent. This is about a father that is emotionally absent in his son's life. Papaoutai translates to "Where are you Dad?" A cover of Stromae.
You should react to either sound of silence or marry did you know!
Awesome reaction, as usual....Loved it!. Thank You and there are lots of suggestions below! Stay Safe.
Not to mention singing in perfect French!!!!
I love their Kiiara Cover Gold - Mitch is so good in that one
If you like originals and hearing Kirstie sing, you will love the live performance of WATER POPSPRING 2016. (Kirstie and Kevin wrote it.. )
watch dog days their performance on the sing off, by far the best thing ever!!
This song is based on a child who wants to find his dad leading to pap ou tues. Which means where are you dad.
Someone else already listed several originals I love & would've suggested, so I'll just add Cracked 💔 to that list. It's a blues/soul song & so has Scott as lead since he usually does that style the best, & it's very catchy!
Okay, info about this song:
The title 'Papaoutai' is actually a sentence in French.
Ought to check that out as it's really fun.
yes you Need to see them live :)
YES!!! KEEP THOSE REACTIONS COMING!!! :D
You should definitely react to some of their live performances!
Loved it, talented and funny...
You should watch some of Lindsay Sterling's stuff. That dancing while playing the violin gets ramped to 11.
" Papaoutai " ("Papa, où t'es?", French for "Dad, where are you?"
Need to do yourself a favor and listen to "Sound of Silence". So Phenomenal!!!!
Hi Eddie, another great reaction, I love how you appreciate, and are still blown away by their talents. I subscribed the first time you reacted to PTX, and have been with you ever since. All the suggested songs are amazing and I will be here for everyone. You are rapidly becoming my fav reactor :)
I want dolls like them!
Pleeeeeeeease cover Pentatonix - Aha!, Singapore, The Star Vista ....it will blow you away!!!! Pure amazement
here is a little list of some more songs you should react to from them: can't hold us, sound of silence, royals, mad world, blinding lights, imagine, dreams, come along, and of course more songs to go, maybe some of their evolution songs and their sing off journey to learn a little bit more about them
You know I live somewhere near you, and I can tell you Ive seen them 3 times but I had to travel to Toronto, Dallas, and Montreal. ☹️
Aha...live, you say that you would like to see them? React to AHA! Live in Singapore at Star Vista PLEASE!!! I know once you see it, you'll wonder why you waited so long. And they are friggin' amazing in concert; even when you watch/hear them live, it's still almost unbelievable how great they are!
he did it
@@notbanksy2977 I don't see it in his list of PTX vids, am I missing something???
Little fun fact about Stromae: Billie Eilish worked with him on her video for "Hostage" 😀.
I’m watching this video again. Heehee the bass is definitely Avi. He does dance in the video tho!
can you react to pentatonix the sound of silence scott has a deep voice in it. pentatonix love again , superfruit singing beyonce ,the promise, future friends or scott hoying and mario jose lost on you beautiful song
I wish you could find someone to translate and redo the reaction with the lyrics up on the screen.
Another great collaboration is Todrick Hall, who is SO talented , is the Wizard of Ahhhs. Kristie sings 3 different characters and Avi's bass is sick.
They have great original music. Try Run to You, Sing, Can't Sleep Love, Cracked (IHeart studio performance)
You can hear them sing in Japanese in their medley of Perfume songs. I highly recommend it.
Its french (Papa ou t'es) which basically means Dad where are you?
You gotta check out Lindsay!!!!!!!!! Shadows is my fav
Stromae is an amazing artist. You should react to this song and some of his other ones like Carmen
Hi Newfie, how're you doing, I recommend you to see "dace of the sugar plum fairy" that video is really great
somehwere there is a video on YT where they are singing this live and scott lost his voice for a few minutes and mitch just took over singing his part too. they got each other's backs always.
poor Avi never got the best make up in 'wizard of aahs' when they are dressed as the munchkins its hilarious and sad what avi looks like but then he comes back as the lion and its perfect!
International and foreign music is also a great world to get into!😊
Do people come anywhere close to Nova Scotia??? (just kidding, I've been to NS). La La Latch is one of my favs as is Can't Hold Us. - Hi from Chicago.
Pleeeeease please do their original "Sing!" One of my top favorite originals!
