I was at the show. I remember thinking to myself "WTF kirk? A few days later I heard the story of this being played at the show. Basically a guy in the M&G asked Lars if they could play Orion. Lars said the song was not on the list but that he was gonna talk to the guys to see if they were up to it. So, this performance was pretty much decided on the fly.
Yes, it just made this incredibly emotional rewatching it now.

I read somewhere that he has been suffering from arthritis in his forearms in the last couple of years. And Lars has shoulder problems, from years of playing aggressively with poor technique. They are all in their 50's now, nobody stays young forever, sadly...
No way. Kirk's 54 and Joe Walsh is 69 and plays better than ever. Check him out at Daryl's House. He's a player so on top of his game. Wicked vibrato and so sweet on his simple licks. Kirk was good in the studio in the 80's but has never progressed. His solo's are pentatonic blubber with maybe an odd legato run just to get from one pentatonic pattern to another. He should have never fucked that up. Zach Wylde can play hammered and Mustaine and still execute it. I can go on and on. I don't like to say it but he's so overrated and really not that good. Mediocrity rules.
Joe Walsh is a great player, for sure, but a totally different style, not relevant to Metal. I agree on the Kirk comments too, but what are you gonna do, it's always been James and Lars running the show, and if they're happy with Kirk playing lead then, that's the way it is.

I still like Kirk, he's not the best player on the planet and he knows it but he was still super influental and I like playing his solos, just not the live versions. He's a nice guy

Robert is so underrated, he's so skillful with both bass and guitar. It was a huge pleasure and a huge gift from Metallica to the Costa Rican family. Pura vida!
Im from Costa Rica and I was at this concert, and as far as I can tell, this song was not in the setlist, it was a request from a fan that could be with them in a "Meet and greet" before the concert, is said that they changed Battery for Orion. So probably they werent prepared for this song but they did it for their fans! Thanks Metallica for this amazing concert
Ricardo Carrillo setlists are made way before the meet and greet, even if that guy asked for the song it was already there, I spoke to the guys on staff smoking outside the stadium and they told me about the song being there.

Yo viajé desde Nicaragua, sin saber dónde iba a dormir o que iba a comer, sin planear nada, únicamente ir al concierto, estuve 4 días mal alimentado(porque no llevaba mucho dinero) pero valió la pena cada segundo.

Such a shame that Cliff didn't get to experience everything that the rest of the guys have experienced up to this point.
He did in spirit. He lives on in the hearts of both Metallica and the Met Family! I'm certain Cliff would be proud that they went on in his absence.
Jason M I agree but Cliff's legendary status within the community is something fierce. He may not have lived on to experience their future level of success, but his legacy lives on and he is forever cemented in his status as one of the greats. He lives on in countless musicians worldwide and is something of a talisman to all metal bass players around the globe. If you ask me, a true musician couldn't ask for more.

For everyone with their negative comments this song was not on the setlist but was requested by the fans in the meet and greet and metallica played it and I am very grateful to the band for such a gesture of pleasing their Fans besides giving us the privilege of Listen to Masterpiece that for me that was worth my concert in san jose costa rica, who did not like to see the video

if you want to listen to a pre recorded album, go stick the cd player on, if you love live music played by humans and not tweaked to sound perfect listen to this, mistakes and all, that's what makes live music the most powerful emotion tool in the world.
just another proof that being the most perfect musician in the world does'nt necessarily mean you can make the best band in the world.

Besides the few mistakes in the first solo. Kirk was amazing afterwards. Great recovery and awesome improvisations.
its actually beautiful u can tell his hands just failed him and he saved it so well and filled spots, u can tell he gets really sad when he messes up but always performs great for the rest of the show, legend!

Yo estuve ahí y la verdad que fue increíble el hecho de poder disfrutar de Orion en directo. Jamás hubiese imaginado que tuvieran esa canción para la noche. Simplemente fue lo mejor. Lastimosamente muchísima gente no tenía idea de lo que estaba pasando lo cual fue una lástima porque si bien es cierto muchas personas van a ver a Metallica porque es Metallica pero no conocen realmente toda su discografía sino únicamente sus temas más populares, pero de igual forma, espero, hayan podido disfrutar de ese regalo.

I think it has more to do with that fact that every solo on Hardwired... To Self Destruct sounds unoriginal, uninspired and re hashed from TBA and before, the fact that he fucks up quite often or seems to forget notes while playing live and the fact that it's disappointing to see a once great guitarist practically coasting along... Makes me sad :(
This song was decided to be player literally last second. It never was on the list. Orion never is on the list anyway 90% of the times (if not more). So it was absolutely normal to have some mistakes. They didn't practise it obviously. And I'm not saying it because I'm desperate to defend Kirk's quality. A true fan knows mistakes are part of every concert :)

Aunque mucha gente se fije en el par de errores que comete KIrk en el solo, sinceramente eso fue lo de menos. Estuve allí y realmente fue le mejor de todo el concierto. No se si sabían pero Orion la han tocado con esta 66 veces en vivo y siento que para nosotros los metaleros de hueso colorado fue un regalo que nos hicieron. Los posers que estabn ahí no entendían que era lo que estaba pasando. Esto fue como una aplanadora... Gracias Metallica... Costa rica y yo te lo agradecemos

Proudly, I am from Costa Rica, and I was at this show(the second Metallica show for me in my life). As this song was not in the original setlitst it was a big, big surprise that they played entirely. Later, I knew that during the Meet & Greet a fan asked Lars to play it instead of Battery... Thanks Metallica

I think something that's important to note about the potential mistakes being made during the song is that this song holds MAJOR emotional and mental significance to them all. They would obviously be juggling an insane amount of additional pressure into this song beyond the regular pressure of playing infront of an army of humans.
I promise you that no one could possibly make Kirk feel any worse than what he already does for messing up even just the smallest bit, because it's for his brother.
We should be stoked that they're willing to play it still.

From the Philippines here. I use Orion as a timer when I'm cooking rice. Once I set the fire in the stove (we don't have rice cooker, we cook our rice old school) in the lowest setting, I'm going to play Orion. Once the song is done, the rice is done too.
It makes cooking rice 1000x more fun! 😂
